I received a call from the Hr unit that they are sending 5 Trainees to me for confirmation. I was surprised because they didn't give me a prior notice. When I Queried the lady from the Hr unit she said the Senior Partner (HOD) contacted them that he will travelling to the UK that I can go ahead with the confirmation.

I was a bit nervous because I find it difficult relating with people, what do I ask them? Moreover I have too much on my hands already. I told Hr to give me an hour so that I can coordinate myself tongue....The truth is if you confirm a trainee and He/she under performs, it tells badly on your record. Here I am always striving to maintain a spotless record now this challenge doesn't look good.

Exactly an hour later Hr unit called again that they are on their way, I told her to take them to the conference room.....30mins later I joined them Lo and Behold I saw 5 well dressed gentlemen and ladies 3 guys and 2 ladies. I stared at them and they were looking back at me (which kind witch be this I said to myself) They thought I was testing them truth is I don't even know what to say or ask....."tell me your names I started".....after all the blah blah.....i went through their cv's it was good. 3 had first class. it was B.A trainee, I looked at their aptitude test performances read their essays great; yet I didn't know what further qstns to ask. So I wrote down a simple arithmetic on the board and I gave them 90s to solve. Only one got it right within the time frame (A lady!!!!; she bagged First class from Reading University UK). I thanked them for their interest in joining us. I sent my remarks to Hr and they were shocked. Hr Manager had to call me explaining that they have spent so such on the recruitment exercise and approving just one means they have to continue the exercise. I simply told him Mr ***a** you can confirm the rest.

This was the simple problem I wrote on the board.

€/€ - €/6 = €/12......what is the value of €?

So I am asking you, how good are you with basic reasoning?

This question you gave them to solve, is it relevant to their job in that office, if NO

You just ruined ppl's hope, NA OVERSABI GO KILL YOU!!! waray undecided

Bro, u dey mind those yeye people?

E383:

If you were judged based on what you didn't know at every point you sought to have a job will you be in a position to make someone who had worked hard, bagged a good degree, excellent performance at the initial stage of the recruitment, finally get HR recommendation only to be asked to solve a silly mathematical problem which has no bearing whatsoever on performance look stupid because you were confused and didn't know how to do a simple delegated task.

You need to call HR and apologize for doing something as silly as that.

I owe you no apology.

As for you cretin, you better don't quote me ever again in this your miserable life.

This is so easy.If your narration is true, then this is shocking that only 1 out of 5 graduates got it right. This is elementary school algebra that high school students should play with and deliver in less than 30 seconds.

€=4

I've graduated since 2008 and I didn't get the answer till after 5 minutes. I manage over 40 personnel in my department some are programmers, some are Database managers, all are good arithmetically but I'm in charge of all of them. I was directly involved in the hiring process for 25 out of 40 of them and I can't imagine asking them something as frivolous as an arithmetic question. I still don't understand the usefulness of the arithmetic question when it's been proven times without number that behavioral questions are more effective than quantitative questions when assessing job candidates!

People who are against what you did are exactly the type of people who will most likely never become management staff due to their infantile decision making processes. In my line of job, there is zero room for error at any stage. I salute your courage to do the right thing.
Seriously, what right thing? How could he judge them based on a single question? So you think anyone who couldn't solve the question isn't smart, can't perform well on the job or can't solve a harder arithmetic? To have reached that stage considering the thousands of trainee candidates we have in Nigeria, they must be intelligent. .
Also, considering he gave them time..there's this tension that comes with being timed, also they least expected another test at that stage... it must have come as a shock..

I'm not excusing the candidates' inability to solve the problem but op judging them based on a single arithmetic is just irrational. .

I must say you are a wrong person to be in your position, just because you don't know what to do you decided to play out of the rules because you want to protect your records and thwarted the efforts of those that have been working to make sure they got to that level even when you saw that their records from the recruitment process is good, don't worry this will expose you to your organization that you lack what it takes to handle such issue, must they know everything that you knew? By the way, are they not trainees? and what did you understand by (trainee) , By the grace of God that decision will be revised while your capacity would be made known to your organization.

Have it in mind that decision will affect you, as it is now you have shown to your colleagues whom you are by making them feel having worked and gotten to this stage they did nothing. So annoying, I just hope when the main person that is in charge comes back he/she should have second/positive look on their performance and as well review your own contract/position before you run your organization's (employees retention strength) from 100% to 0%.

OP you did very well by confirming only one.

I'm very sure that the op wouldn't have set the question if it wasn't relevant.

And in case you didn't notice, if he confirms them and they mess up, it's on him.

If you made a 2.1 or first class, then prove it.

I am very sure if I had given them a simple comprehension test people like you will complain. Where did I state that I am in Hr unit let alone a Hr professional? That is the problem you have with people seek understanding before you type. I am not good at communicating so? You don't need that much around here. We only need your calculating brain. I can't remember the last time I said good morning at the office. If you are good in communication thanks. Have you not wondered why Standard chartered Bank and Shell NG don't test your verbal aptitude? Too much talk ruins the brain just be cautious. Improve your comprehension skill.....Mind your Language.

Over confidence! Stop deceiving yourself, I can see you have not had life experience. The day issue would warrant taking decision about you would look like an empty pack, some of the banks that has folded-up where are some of their managers today, and what was their feelings while they were still in office? hehehehe make I go read the story

I won't blame op tho. I guess he was only trying to avoid being responsible for their employment in case anything goes wrong. So that was his own way of minimising the risk of staining his own record. He clearly stated that he'll be responsible for whatever they do there after. And he doesn't want his record tarnished.
Why didn't he hand over the job to another person?
He also clearly stated not knowing a penny abouft confirmation but still went ahead to carry it out.

Postponing it woulda done the trick while he dedicated his little time to learn how to confirm trainees.

I bet he doesn't know the kinda stress and effort those people put in to get to that stage just to get that poo from the OP.

He was clearly after his reputation and not confirming those trainees. I tell you. Look closely into the thread and you'd spot the kinda person he is.

Some jobs actually require you to think logically and critically under pressure.

If the applicant can't perform under pressure, he has no business being there.

Imagine the pilot of an aircraft freaking out when there's a turbulence.

The OP was more concerned about his reputation rather than giving them a 'good' confirmation.

Those guys were already under lots of pressure and the OP decided to still add up more pressure on them.

I don't need your goals or objectives. I don't care if you have leadership skills or not. Infact I don't care if they are introverts or sadist.
