Are the questions in Manhattan 5lb books real GRE questions... Cos i just did one small test maths of 37 questions ans i got 34 correctly which could pass for a 166...and its just to test my current abilities... First one got 18/20..second 24/25...now 34/37...cos they look quite easy and I'm just wondering if these were the kind of things they ask in real GRE

Hahahahahahhahahahahahahaha.

You either want to write the GRE or you don't; there is no dabbling. If you do, get the official guides and take the powerprep tests (you can download it from the ets website).

Any other way to gauge your performance is just irrelevant.

use powerprep. It's the closest.

Power prep used to be the closest but isn't anymore. I had 166, 167 on both tests but ended up with a 161. Apart from the fact that you may lose your cool and focus in the actual test, the test has evolved from what it used to be in the yore.

Yorex2011, just get the ETS official questions, and practice as much as you can. I know you're smart, but it would be foolhardy not preparing yourself for the worst. You don't want to end up with less than what you bargained for, but still be compelled send your scores to "ivy leagues" because you didn't prepare yourself for the worst possibility. My 2 cents.

In other news...

Guys, imagine a school claiming they can't fund Masters now because of the dwindling oil price! Please if you've got a good profile, and wouldn't mind going for a PhD, please just by all means apply for a direct PhD instead. It would be easier getting into funded programs that way. These schools want some level of commitment, and 'working' for them for 2 years only to go get yourself some fancy job in the end don't often cut it for them.

Sure thing man.. Dedicating at least 7 weeks for my verbal and analytic part as those are my major concerns...
I'm hoping with a near perfect score i cud have more chance at funding

Alright... Will do...
Plan to go thru as many materials as possible... Especially in verbal and A. W.
I'm going woth the belief that a near perfect score is very achievable and that's my aim.
Back then i was never serious with exams and tests and all that... But not anymore...
I want to be putting my utmost best..
Thanks for your responses

Yh and they were timed... Most of the times I'm able to complete the quants in half the time allocated and still have fair enuf scores...
But i just loathe the verbal... cry cry cry

try the ets and powerprep, if your Quant score is okay for the requirement, then focus on verbal and Awa. Magoosh is the best matl for verbal, register if you've the money. The key to answering RC, the whole verbal sef, is understanding the author's idea. So you need to calm down and be curious of the msg the author wants to pass across while reading. Success!

Hello All,

I am currently in the process of applying for grad school and all your comments have been very helpful! smiley. However, I have some questions and would be grateful if any one can assist.

1. @sirRiddy said something about funding for Masters Program. After researching all i see is Graduate assistantship (TA) not funding, the funding I see is only for PHD students. Please can someone expatiate on this? Asides from scholarships, graduate assistantship (TA) and Private loans what other means of funding is available to international students going for an MS program?

2. I am also reading for GRE but was considering going for lessons instead (Don't consider myself a fast learner and might need extra tutorial). Can someone recommend a company? or do you think the Magoosh vidoes would help regardless of the individuals level of assimilation?

3. I want to pay ahead of time for a day to take the GRE test but from what I see the test seats a full for April. Are there companies that reserve this slot that I could contact?

Thanks all! I am a beginner in all this and the whole process of applying is overwhelming! Your responses would help greatly! Thanks!

COPIED FROM A FACEBOOK GROUP

Hello, I am grad student in USA. I see some many people posting for profile evaluation and I would like to give some suggestions to those who are gonna apply based on my past experiences and mistakes i did while applying and selecting the universities.

1. Do a thorough research about the university and the department. Make sure that the university is good enough. How can you do that? The best way is to ask somebody who is currently doing MS in your desired specialization there. It is always ok to get suggestions from from first year grad students but the best is to ask people from the second year. The reason is because, first year students are just getting knowing about the university and the department. Most popular universities have Facebook pages. You can post a question there. At least try to get opinion from 4 or 5 person. If you get a negative review from all the five that means its always good to stay away.Opinion from students from another department is not reliable. For eg. If you are looking for CS in XYZ university, ask opinion from students doing MS in CS not EE.

2. Know about the department policies and rules. Know about the CPT (Internship). requirement. for the university. CPT is approved by your graduate adviser. Different universities and departments have different policies regarding that. Some university departments allows CPT 40hr/week anywhere in US after 18 credits. Some allows 40 hrs/week during summer and allow to do internship within 100 miles radius during spring and fall. It totally varies. A university which is flexible is the best. A university whose rules are stricter may not help you much even if it sits in IT hubs like silicon valley.

3. Know about the expenses and the surrounding city. Get ready to struggle as you first few months in US wont be easy for you.

Please kindly share the Schools with PhD funding. As regards GRE prep, Magoosh+ Manhattan + Official guides should do the magic. First, learn the strategies used in these resource quickly using their practice questions. Next, Do up to 15 full test and always build your weak areas as you go long you will be fine

MS/PhD positions available at IUPUIThe Ecohydrology and Biogeochemistry lab of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) seeks multiple motivated students interested in pursuing a MS or PhD (Applied Earth Sciences) degree in the Department of Earth Sciences. Two federal funded projects are available to support the students' endeavors. One NSF funded project is on the effects of non-rainfall water input on plant-soil water interactions in drylands with fieldwork in Namibia. Another project investigates the buffering effect of no-till agriculture on crop yield, nutrient use efficiency, and leaching potential under drought conditions (USDA-funded). The positions are available from August 2016, and will be supported through research and teaching assistantships that provide a competitive stipend, tuition remission andhealth insurance. The student(s) will be advised by Dr. Lixin Wang (http://earthsciences.iupui.edu/~lxwang). The USDA project supported student will be co-advised by Dr. Pierre-André Jacintheand will work in close collaboration with the Remote Sensing group led by Dr. Lin Li. Applicants must hold a BS degree in earth sciences, hydrology, soil science, environmental sciences or related disciplines, and have strong oral and written communication skills.IUPUI is Indiana's premier urban public research university, currently enrolling more than 30,000 students. Graduate Assistantships in Soil Microbial Ecology & BiogeochemistryTwo PhD and one MS graduate student assistantships are available in the EcologyCenter and the Department of Biology at Utah State University, Logan, UT, beginning summer or fall 2016, as part of a USDA-AFRI project examining how soil microbial growth efficiencies (MGE) are influenced by drought in rangeland and agro-ecosystems. Soil microbial growth efficiency (aka carbon-use efficiency) is a key variable regulating greenhouse gas emissions from soil, as well as rates of carbon and nutrient sequestration and release. Biogeochemical models are extremely sensitive to variation in MGE, yet we have a poor understanding of how environmental variables influence MGE. This project will utilize stable isotope techniques to examine how variation in soil moisture regulates MGE in sagebrush steppe, irrigated pasture, and conventional and organic cropland ecosystems. The ideal applicant will have: background in soil science, microbial or plant ecology, biogeochemistry, or a related area; good chemistry and quantitative skills; excellent written and oral communication skills; and the ability to work closely with others and independently at field sites. Interested individuals should send a CV to John Stark (john.stark@usu.edu), Department of Biology, Utah State University, Logan, UT.

Try magoosh vocabulary flashcards app.. Learnt and mastered 50 words today... Plan to keep the pace for the next 40 days... That should hopefully be at least 2000 new words...
Might not work for everyone tho...
But no harm in trying.. Works best if you have very good memory and recall....
