Arsenal Midfielder Iwobi Could Face Off Against Childhood Pal Akpom At Toulon Festival

Published: April 13, 2016

Nigeria’s Olympic National Team is among the ten teams invited to participate in the 2016 edition of the prestigious Toulon Tournament which will hold in France from 18–29 May 2016, according to the official website of the tournament.

The Dream Team VI and South Africa will represent Africa in the tourney, while Australia, Japan,Mexico, Czech Republic,England,France,Portugal and Colombia have been handed invitations as well.

With the English Premier League set to end three days before the start of the competition, the likes of Alex Iwobi(Arsenal), Kelechi Iheanacho(Manchester City) and Nathan Oduwa(Tottenham Hotspur) could feature in the tournament for the first time.

The draw for the group stage is yet to be determined, but it is confirmed that the Nigeria U23s will play a minimum of four matches during the competition.

Traditionally, the Toulon Tournament is reserved for U20 players but the organizers have decided to allow participants select players born from January 1 1993 to enable them use the tourney to prepare for the Olympic Games.

This is the best time to cap or access some foreign born players. It is likely Portugal will not call Tiago Ilori, so this is the best time to take advantage of capping him.

On the other hand, Solanke, Akpom, Onomah, Sheyi, Ibe, Moses Odubajo and Iorfa might likely feature for England in the tournament if we don't invite any of them. Anyhow, this will at the same time afford Siasia and Nigerians the opportunity to access these players before we finally decide on who should be on the list to Rio Olympics.

No matter how much devotion we show our clubs, we still need our National Teams to succeed and give our Nation a better image.

I hope these guys get it.

One of my close pals says he does not watch our National Team. He is an Arsenal Fan.

He was usually proud to say it that "I dnt watch Nigerian match".

After Nigeria drew against Iran in the 2014 World Cup. He came out on facebook and started calling our Super Eagles "Super Chickens" and started saying all sorts of things angry.

The guy was ashamed of himself after I white washed him for that his statement. Other Nigerians joined in insulting him. He had to take off that comment. grin

The Terranga Lioness still have hopes of making it to AWCON cos the Super Falcons would be banned too.

There is one thing about pointing out the bad in our football but mockery is a low, especially when some do it and praising others as better.

That is why many of them fail to see the good our coaches put into the team. Or, see good in our players.

I would not lie, sometimes I am guilty of it. However, I come to my senses.

For instance, my critical nature and dislike for Echiejile is not hidden.

Now, I am trying to see the good in him. I might prefer Madu, Amuzie and Oshaniwa over him but I do not want to stoop as low as mocking him.

It is wrong. He is among what we have and the Super Eagles and coaches are ours.

Honestly I am tired of trying to paint an obvious picture to you guys, Nigeria defeated Belgium in the Semi final of 2008 Olympics go thru that team list and go thru d Belgians team list and ask yourself where your players that were by far superior are now.
We lost to Argentina narrowly in the final go thru their team list.
Where is the continuity in our football.
Nigeria has good players no doubt but their quality is exaggerated in age grade competitions because of one obvious reason.
I don't derive any joy in saying this things,
I am a true fan I weep for the state of Nigeria's football
We need to start puting systems in place that identify quality 10 yr olds, and groom them,
They have been efforts I know but we need to do more.
I have interned for a day in a popular academy where a 16 yr old who is not very tall was training with his mates and was told to go and join the U 10s because he was d same height with most of them.I tried opposing and was shut down
Our football needs reorientation
I won't be a patriot to the point of self deceit.
Just take a look at the wrinkles on your Uncles face and some of the U23 players especially the home based you will see close similarities.

Early career Edit
Martins joined the local football club F.C. Ebedei, having been scouted by manager Churchill Oliseh while playing on the streets of his hometown. After a year with the club, Italian Serie C side A.C. Reggiana made a move for the player. After a two-month trial, Martins and fellow Ebedei teammate Stephen Makinwa signed youth contracts with the club in 2000. His first season in Italy saw Martins break into the first team squad, and later in the year Serie A sides Perugia and Inter made offers for the forward.[7]

That thirty years old theory is not the way people make it look. If not our age grade football would have crumbled with the introduction of the MRI scan.

I am born and bred in Nigeria and I have heard all this talk you are saying. I have watched players come and grow. Do Nigeria have age cheats? Yes. But, it is not as bad as people make it.

We have seen promising talents fall by the way.

Look at Fabio and Rafael of Man Utd who can not make the Brazilian squad till date. I think Rafael got a chance during a period.

Because they fell out, does that mean they were overage or not good.

There are many European underage teams that fell off. Many Argentines and Brazilians.

Check on Patricio Perez who wore ten over Messi in 2005. He was called the Argentine Wheel Steerer. Go and research Liduena of River Plate.

A team falling off or a talent falling off does not mean overage. Africans are more likely to fall off in Europe compared the Europeans.

I said Obafemi Burst into the scene. Iheanacho burst into the scene in the U17. I did not say become a professional European player. That was in 2001.

When we start counting how long Iheneacho was in the scene of football, when he finishes his long career, will we start from last year?

We must talk of his exploits in the preseason games before he signed his professional deal.

Obafemi burst into the scene in 2000. That is when we started reading of him in papers. Makinwa and co.

They were Oliseh's boys.

Our Sports Minister, Dalung, who is a lawyer should fly out and sort this out.

If we need legal backing, he should go wherever and get an injunction stopping them.

FIFA rules were built by a corrupt pillar to protect the corrupt.

Look at how UEFA came up with the Financial Fair Play rules to rob and slow Man City and PSG.

Look at how they had no ground in court.

Look at how they lost the Bossman ruling. We should act fast before they ban. Unless FIFA will guarantee it will fund all our footballing activities.
