Roma's Sadiq Umar: I can't wait for Nigeria to call me

Sadiq Umar of AS Roma

by Samm Audu

AS Roma youngster Sadiq Umar has told AfricanFootball.com he cannot wait to be called up by Nigeria after his breakthrough season in the Italian Serie A.

The 19-year-old striker from Abuja Football College slipped through the Nigeria national team selectors, like former Inter Milan and Newcastle United star Obafemi Martins.

This season, Sadiq Umar joined Roma on loan from Serie B side Spezia and he has taken his chance in the big time – He scored 14 goals in 10 matches for the Roma youth team before he made his main team debut against Bolgna in November and scored his first Serie A goal a month goal against Genoa.

And the centre-forward, who could also play as a second striker or on the wings, has now declared his willingness to represent his country.

“Yes, I will be very much honoured to represent my country and give my 100%. I can’t wait to play for Nigeria,” he told AfricanFootball.com

“But I also know that Nigeria is blessed with lots of players both at home and abroad.”

Sadiq Umar will be eligible to feature for the Nigeria U20 team, the Flying Eagles, the Olympic team as well as the Super Eagles.

Me new Kanu? No I wish I could be like him - Roma starlet Sadiq Umar

Sadiq Umar of AS Roma

by Samm Audu

AS Roma exciting young striker Sadiq Umar has dismissed comparisons with Nigeria legend Nwankwo Kanu, insisting he is only starting out in his career and so still learning the ropes.

Gangling Umar has got off to a flying start in his debut season at Italian Serie A side Roma – two goals, six appearances and listed 20 times on match-day squad- but he has exclusively told AfricanFootball.com he still has a very long way ahead of him if he were to match the achievements of one of Nigeria’s most decorated stars.

“I’m I the new Kanu? No. It’s an honour to be compared to such a great player. I want to be like him, I wish I could be like him, but I’m not him. I will keep pushing to be like him,” said the Kaduna-born striker, who is expected to be rewarded with a four-year contract by Roma at the end of a loan deal from Serie B outfit Spezia this summer.

Nineteen-year-old Sadiq also told AfricanFootball.com it has been “an unforgettable” season for him in Europe.

“This is the beginning of my career and it has been an unforgettable season,” he remarked.

“I still remember my debut against Bologna and also my first goal against Genoa. They were my personal highlights.”

On the back of his exploits in Italy, the player from Abuja Football College has been linked with several other top European clubs, but he has maintained he is only focused about what happens on the pitch.

“I don’t know anything about interests from other clubs. That’s for my club and agent to worry about. I’m only focused on playing football and I don’t want any distractions,” he further told AfricanFootball.com

“Besides, I’m happy at Roma and the future will take care of itself.”

Portuguese club Gil Vicente sign Nigerian youngsters

Zeidu (left) and Nonso (right) flank their agent

Portuguese second division club Gil Vicente have signed Nigerian teenagers Zeidu Sanusi and Collins Nonso Ogbodo on a four-year professional contract each after they impressed during a month’s trial.

The contract of both players will run from July 1 to June 30, 2020.

Nineteen-year-old Zeidu is an exceptional left back, while Nonso, 18, is a highly-rated defensive midfielder with an imposing physical presence already.

Gil Vicente are 10th on the 24-team second-tier Portuguese league.

The players were first scouted during a talent hunt in Nigeria late last year before they flew out to Portugal to finalise their contracts recently.

There were mixed fortunes for Nigerian players in the Norwegian Cup, with Lillestrom, IK Start and Viking all failing to progress to the next round while FK Haugesund, Odd Grenland and Stabaek advanced to the fourth round.

William Troost-Ekong and Anthony Izuchukwu played the entirety of FKH’s 4-1 win at First Division side åsane.

Former Flying Eagles star Chuks Akabueze started and was in action for 90 minutes as Odd beat Asker 3-2

Ex-Norway youth international Ohi Omoijuanfo played 71 minutes of Stabaek’s 3-0 rout of Baerum at the Sandvika Stadion,

Chidiebere Nwakali featured for 90 minutes as IK Start lost 3-1 to Sandnes . Teammate Austin Ikenna joined the fray eight minutes from time.

Bonke Innocent was on the pitch for the entire duration of Lillestrom’s 1-0 loss to Sandefjord . Leading scorer in the top division Fred Friday was rested for this one.

Abdullahi Suleiman opened scoring at the Lassa idrettspark (Stavanger) but could not prevent Viking from losing 2-1 to 2nd Division team Vidar.

Samuel Adegbenro and Suleiman played the full game, Aniekpeno Udoh was introduced in the 70th minute and Usmani Sale was benched.

Over to Finland. Nnamdi Oduamadi and Taye Taiwo played the entirety of HJK Helsinki’s 5-1 hammering of Ilves. Vincent Onovo was not in the capital team’s 18-man squad. The AC Milan loanee netted in the 63rd minute.

Nnaemeka Anyamele lasted the distance as HIFK were beaten 3-1 by VPS at Kaarlen kenttä (Vaasa).

In the Turkish Cup, Godfrey Oboabona was not selected for Rizespor’s goalless draw with Galatasaray, who qualified for the next round 3-1 on aggregate.

Harry Kane to Arsenal won't happen. You know it too.

If we sign Mahrez, Iwobi will have to be contented with playing circa 10 EPL games and the league cup and Fa Cup games.

He won't become a total bench warmer but won't bench Mahrez.

Birmingham City Boss Hints Nigeria Target Solomon-Otabor May Start Vs Cardiff City

Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett has hinted that Viv Solomon-Otabor will be given a run-out in the club’s final game of the season against Cardiff City on Saturday due to injuries to a number of first team players.

Solomon-Otabor made his professional debut for the Blues in the current campaign and has appeared 21 times in the second-tier of English football this term.

“The obvious one will be Charlee Adams, who going into next season it would be nice to learn a little bit more about whether he can handle a game from the start,” said Rowett to the club’s official webpage, bcfc.com.

“Viv (Solomon-Otabor) would be another one that comes into that category.

“We watch the Under 21s in training every day, and we watch them in the Under-21 games and at the minute Charlee and Viv are the standout ones who would be able to come into the group and start the game.”

Born in London, the 20-year-old Solomon-Otabor trained with the Nigeria U23s last summer.

Who will be South Africa, Algeria and Nigeria's over-age Olympic players?

Goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune appears set to be one of South Africa's three over-age players.

By Mark Gleeson
A newspaper leak in South Africa revealed a rather embarrassing list of pedantic possibilities for South Africa's Olympic team, as they consider which over-age players to pick to strengthen the side for the men's football tournament in Rio.

Coach Owen da Gama's list looked more like a collection of personal favourites and brought howls of derision, followed by a rapid but unconvincing denial as spin doctors at the South African Football Association "slipped" an alternative list to the media.

The updated inventory better reflects the available talent that will ultimately be used to shore up and strengthen the squad that goes to Brazil. Da Gama, like all the other coaches, will seek to use the concession to good effect, making up for deficiencies or adding a little gold dust and leadership to the youthful squad.

While the qualifying campaign is restricted to players aged under-23, three overage players can compete at the Olympics. Africa will spend the next weeks debating the identity of the trio of overage players as coaches have little time before they must submit preliminary lists for the August tournament.

South Africa, who meet the hosts in the opening game at the Mane Garrincha Stadium in Brasilia on Aug. 4, will probably take on a goalkeeper and two midfielders from the ranks of the beleaguered national side. The choice of keeper should be relatively simple with Bafana Bafana captain Itumeleng Khune -- already the country's most capped goalkeeper of all time -- bringing experience and inspiration.

The goalkeeper used in last November's qualifiers, teenager Jody February, has played only two matches at senior level for his club Ajax Cape Town, and while an obvious talent for the future, February would likely be out of his depth at the Olympic tournament. But for the other two places, Da Gama has a wide variety of choices and until June 1 to mull over them before sending in his official list to FIFA.

Algeria and Nigeria are the continent's other representatives at the 16-team tournament and Riyad Mahrez would seem the perfect choice for the north Africans as they head to the Olympic Games for only the second time.

His heroics with Leicester City have made him the Premier League's top footballer, in the eyes of his peers, and the lead candidate for the African Footballer of the Year award in December. But several months ago, Algerian Football Federation president Mohamed Raouraoua ruled out the participation of Mahrez and the team's other star, Yacine Brahimi of FC Porto, because he did not want to burden them with too many international assignments next season -- notably with an eye on making a run at next year's African Nations' Cup title.

Algeria might yet change their minds and try and select the pair but, for the moment, Islam Slimani, the imposing striker from Sporting Lisbon, is the overage player most likely to be included by coach Pierre-Andre Schurmann.

Nigeria media has already given out plenty of column inches to speculation over the identity of their country's over-age trio for Brazil, as they go in search of a second gold medal 20 years after their first.

High on the list is John Obi Mikel and Odion Ighalo, two players from the Premier League, and also goalkeeper Victor Enyeama, who is a strong candidateaccording to ESPNFC columnist Colin Udoh. The France-based goalkeeper had quit the national team last year when dropped from selection, but now could return.

The Olympic Games football tournament might be seen as something of a misnomer at an event where all the world's finest athletes are competing ... except in football. But for Africa it is important and it marked the early breakthroughs for the continent in the international arena.

Zambia's upset win over Italy in 1988 was followed by a bronze for Ghana in Barcelona four years later. Then came the magical Nigerian performance of 1996 and gold again for Africa in Sydney in 2000 when Cameroon emerged victorious.

Brazil and Neymar will have the tag of favourites and be the firm focus of everyone in August, but the African challenge will be a very real one -- with the right over age players to spur on their chances.

Mark Gleeson has covered African football since 1985 for a variety of international titles. He is based in Cape Town.

Wilshere Hails Wenger’s Faith In “Special” Iwobi

By Adeboye Amosu:

Arsenal midfielder, Jack Wilshere, has described his teammate Alex Iwobi as a special player.

The Nigerian international who rose through the ranks at the club has become a regular with the Gunners this season.

And Wilshere is full of praise for the youngster for adapting to life in the English top flight.

"I really like him as a player,"the England international told Arsenal Player. "I watched him in the FA Youth Cup last year and you could always tell there was something special about him.

"He used to train with us quite a lot. He was young, so he never really got a look in when he came over, but you could tell he had something special about him."

Wilshere also heaped plaudits on Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger for moulding Iwobi into top class star.

"If you ask anyone, it looks like he has been in the team for a number of years. He is confident, technically he is great, he fits in and physically he doesn't look like a 20-year old.

"I think the boss has done really well with him because he has brought him in, brought him out and then put him in the team.

"You have to give credit to the boss as well because, at a club like Arsenal, you are looking to win things, finish top four, get Champions League, win competitions, and to play a 19-year old and keep your faith in him week in, week out, Iwobi has repaid him as well."

Top 10: New stars who must be included in Nigeria's Olympic squad

Goal present the top 10 players eligible for Dream Team VI who must be called up for Nigeria's squad for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Kenneth Omeruo, Kasimpasa: Few realise Kenneth is still eligible for the Olympic team due to the leadership role he has assumed in the Super Eagles since making his debut in 2013. His case is reminiscent of the trio of Victor Ikpeba, Sunday Oliseh and Jay-Jay Okocha who made the Atlanta '96 squad despite playing in the World Cup two years earlier. With the current occupants of the Dream Team VI defence doing little to instil confidence, Omeruo will be a welcome addition to bring calm, stability and experience to an otherwise disorganised defence.

Chidozie Awaziem, FC Porto: A player who has seen his stock rise in the past four months after emerging from relative obscurity. A defensive midfielder by trade, he was converted to a central defender and has racked up nine first-team appearances to date, notching one goal. He is a good passer of the ball due to his development as a holding midfielder, and the Dream Team could use a player who is willing to build the play from the back. Who knows, perhaps a Portuguese-speaking player could be useful in Brazil?!

Musa Muhammed, Istanbul Basaksehir FK: Captain fantastic at U-17 and U-20 level, Musa has got great potential, and his marauding runs down the right flank are reminiscent of the great Cafu. Whenever he ventures forward from his defensive position, he can deliver inch-perfect crosses for his forwards. With the Dream Team currently solely reliant on Oghenekaro Etebo for set pieces, Musa will happily share those responsibilities as he is both consistent and eye-catching.

Wilfred Ndidi, Genk: 'Dogo' is experienced for his young age, having featured at two U-20 World Cups, is a two-cap Nigeria international and is playing his first full campaign in Belgium, where he has featured regularly for Genk. One of his key assets is his ability to play anywhere across the backline and he is lightening quick despite his height and comfortable on the ball. Interestingly, both caps came as a midfielder under Sunday Oliseh. Ndidi's versatility and poise could be invaluable in Brazil.

Ifeanyi Matthew, Kano Pillars: Ifeanyi has grown from strength to strength since he broke onto the international scene in 2013 with the U-17s in Morocco. A versatile midfielder who is equally adept at both defensive and offensive positions, he could become Nigeria's own Michael Essien with his high work rate, excellent passing and long-range shots which often result in goals. If anyone was in doubt about his qualities, he certainly did enough to silence doubters at the CHAN earlier in the year, where he was one of Nigeria's standout performers.

Alex Iwobi, Arsenal: Alexander the Great! Iwobi has steadily progressed at club level over the past six months, and has come into his true element recently, making his competitive international debut against Egypt. With Arsenal, he has impressed in the Champions League, and proved to be a decisive operator in the EPL. He brings a different kind of creativity to the team and will surely be a delight to watch. He is expected to play a starring role for Nigeria at the games this summer.

Kelechi Iheanacho, Manchester City: Kelechi is one talent Samson Siasia has failed to include in his team over the past year due to club commitments. The Olympics aren't a Fifa-approved event, and it is expected that the NFF will do everything humanly possible to get arguably Nigeria's best talent at this level to feature. Kelechi will bring creativity, goals and much-needed experience to the attacking third. At this level, you don't get too many chances at goal and such a fine finisher needs to be present.

Ubong Ekpai, Akwa United: A surprise inclusion on the list, but you don't get to score the lone goal against mighty Brazil in a friendly played at their backyard and get overlooked. He was initially a part of the team last year but lost his way and received a recall ahead of last month's friendly against the Selecao, which he grabbed with both hands. Ubong has been in good form this season for hometown club Akwa United, netting key goals for the Promise Keepers since his return from a stint at Kano Pillars.

Imoh Ezekiel, Anderlecht: Imoh has put behind him the disappointment of failing to even make Nigeria's provisional squad ahead for the 2014 World Cup, despite rumours that he eyed Qatari nationality ahead of the 2022 World Cup ahead of his move to the Middle East two years ago. Now back in Belgium, Imoh is playing his best football once again. He could be a real asset for the Dream Team's attack with his goals, skill, pace and strength, despite his diminutive frame. He should be confident of making it to Brazil this time around.

Thank you for finally coming forward with one keen reason why you don't like Nigeria's best U-23 talent and the leader of Nigeria's Generation Next. grin (Even Goal.com agrees with me on this).

At least, when next you say, "Iheanacho is nonsense, I don't like him that much".... Someone will remind you that it is your dislike for his "tongue-out" act that forms a keen part of your opinion on Nacho. grin

A lot of us have things we dislike but I have keen respect for those who put aside their personal distaste and judge a player based on merit and non-sentiments (Suarez and C.Ron comes to mind... even STURRIDGE).

So thank you Sir... You've been spotted. grin

Which one be Musa Mohammed we never play ball since 90 kiridi, Matthew ifeanyi ahead of Abdul Ajagun?

And which one be Ubong Ekpai? Abegi make i no hear their name for that list ooooo. Because all this voice out to arrange write up.
Re: All The News About The Olympic Eagles (U-23) HERE! by TheSuperNerd(m): 11:59pm On May 05, 2016
Ifeanyi Matthew and Ubong Ekpai won't make the final list in my books. I was kinda shocked the writer mentioned them as part of the "key 10".

Musa Mohammed was excellent in that game against Brazil's U-23 that had Gabigol, Malcolm, and Andreas Pereira leading that Brazilian attack at different points of that game. Musa was the best defender on the day.

Look, you guys should cut Musa some slack. His is a case of " Class is permanent but form is temporary". Musa got Class and top potentials as a defender especially at Right back. The lad got balls and guts to stand against even the best. He showed it in that Brazil friendly.

No doubt, Odubajo edges Musa in experience and some other qualities little wonder reports are still making rounds of NFF's attempt to get him. But right now, we have Musa and he's a Class Act.

It's true he's not featured as much for his club but when he was given the chance he showed his qualities. I hope his big breakthrough comes at club level like Chidiebere Nwakali is currently experiencing.

But no one can deny this fact: MUSA MOHAMMED IS ONE PLAYER WHO WILL ALWAYS GIVE HIS VERY BEST FOR ANY TEAM HE FEATURES IN AND MOST TIMES HE DOES HIS JOB PERFECTLY... SO PERFECTLY THAT HE REMINDS ME OF THE LEGENDARY BRAZILIAN RIGHT FULLBACK, CAFU.

Personally, whenever Musa plays I don't lose sleep (yes, he can be a bit rash and overzealous but with a little more time he will outgrow those) because I know he will always command his right back role and give any left winger he faces a big hell of a time.... and I mean a big hell!!!! grin My goodness! Musa is a leader! You see it all over him and in his plays. THE LAD'S GOT HEART FOR BIG GAMES.

All he needs is his time to shine at club level. I'm sure he's working hard. Look at Chidiebere Nwakali, he never featured for Malaga and Girona, he was never given a shot. But he's currently flying high with IK Start of Norway.

Musa and C.Nwakali are two very hardworking players. To me, they were probably two of our five most hardworking players at UAE 2013.... THE OTHERS BEING Akinjide Idowu, Aliyu Abubakar and Taiwo Awoniyi.

So please, Spare Musa... the lad is a good gain for Nigerian football in the long run. I wish we get Odubajo too and fast. We need quality options at right back in the Super Eagles for the future after Rio 2016. There is also Godswill Elohor Ekpolor of Barca (thankfully he featured against Brazil u-23 in that friendly in Vitoria.... shows he's deeply under our watch now grin ).

Seems Kingsley Ehizibue and Tyrone Ebuehi may be lost to other nations but I sincerely hope not. But like I've always said, try, we will to get these exceptional foreign-borns but we won't get all...

In conclusion, I fault Matthew's and Ekpai's name as part of GoalNigeria's top 10 must-go-to Rio. But Musa deserves his place. He's special.... despite lack of game time.

Tigers star could switch allegiance to Nigeria

Hull City right back Moses Odubajo will be asked by Nigeria to represent the nation on the international stage according to the Hull Daily Mail.

The 22 year old has already represented England at Under 20s level but it has been reported that the player is wanted by Nigerian head coach Samson Siasia to feature for the African nation at full international level.

Odubajo qualifies to play for Nigeria through one of his parents. As the full back has not featured competitively for England, he will be able to switch his allegiance to Nigeria if he wishes to do so without facing any restrictions or sanctions from FIFA.

The Super Eagles have qualified for five of the last six FIFA World Cups, reaching the last 16 stage of the competition in Brazil two years ago. The nation are currently ranked 67th in the world in the latest FIFA World Rankings. Nigeria were Africa Cup of Nations winners just three years ago when the tournament was held in South Africa.

Nigeria’s potential offer to Odubajo could provide the defender with the opportunity to showcase his talent on the world stage. The player has played a key role for Steve Bruce’s Hull City side this season after a £3.5 million move from Brentford last summer with Odubajo making 48 appearances for the club to date.

Playing on the full international stage would be some achievement for Odubajo, a player who has come through the academy set up at Leyton Orient and has had to bide his time for Football League playing opportunities in the past.

See my brother, game time is good bt nt everything. What is more important is a player's ability. We know what Musa Mohammed is capable of.

To me, In Right back position, I will name Moses Odubanjo and Sincere Seth ahead of Musa Mohammed. But d article did nt say top 10 for starting line up. Musa Mohammed would likely make it to Rio bt I am nt sure if he would be in starting line up.

As I said Musa may nt b our best RB at this stage but some of the things that he has going for him that may likely influence his making it Rio are:

-his devotion. Musa gives 110%
-he is a Royal Prince of our youth system. Yes former U17 & U20 captain.
-Moses Odubanjo may not be available.

If we used the same method United used when they needed berbatov we would get him but we will never use that method.

Chelsea and Spurs are two clubs Arsenal hardly does transfers biz with.

Ubong Ekpai scored a rebound against Brazil but he played nothing in that game.

He's special.... despite lack of game time.my brother, u remember musa's goal in the finals of UAE 2013?…(if I can clearly remember), dt goal from a free kick, twas perfect.....

Skipper Azubuike Okechukwu now leads Nigeria to Korea tourney

Azubuike Okechukwu

Turkey-based Azubuike Okechukwu will lead Nigeria Olympic team to an invitational tournament in South Korea later this month, AfricanFootball.com understands.

The Yeni Malatyaspor midfielder was not initially scheduled to be on the trip, given his club commitments, as they were expected to participate in the playoffs for promotion to the Turkish Super Lig from the PTT 1 Lig.

But with Malatyaspor failing to make the playoffs, the 19-year old will now be available to lead the team to the South Korea tournament, which is geared towards preparing them for the Olympic Games in Brazil in August.

The Turkish PTT 1 Lig ends on May 15 and he will join the ‘Dream Team VI’ shortly after, ahead of the trip to Seoul on May 29.

The last one year has been remarkable for Azubuike, as he emerged captain of the Nigeria U23 team, and then sealed a move abroad from Bayelsa United.

He also made his Super Eagles debut against Egypt in Alexandria.

He should be on the plane to Brazil barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Madam Confun.... I remember ooo... In fact, I have all their matches on DVD, and the highlights from Fifa TV and other sources on my gadgets. grin (same with the 2015 class, and many other glorious moments of our football... I even have Afcon 1980 final On my PC and Handheld... hahahahahaha... I don vex! wink ).

Musa even repeated such freekick strikes at the U-20 AFCON (AYC) in Senegal last year but was just unlucky not to score. I remember he hit one that scratched the outside of the angle between the crossbar and the left post against Ghana in the semis and he hit a bullet free kick in the final against Senegal that was supposed to end up in the net's top corner but was denied by that "winch" of a goalie between the sticks for Senegal (no wonder na "winch" goal Bulbwa take score am grin ).

Musa is just special and I know he will benefit our Senior national team in the long run.
