Power Generation: Government Should Stop Constructing Gas Fired Power Plants by spymaster(m): 11:31pm On May 18, 2016
The recent drop of power generated to 1400MW due to shortage of gas as a result of pipeline vandalism and destruction in Niger Delta region is a source of concern. My advice to the government is to stop building any gas fired plants again. Our reliance on gas fired plants which constitute 75% of our installed capacity is a threat to National security. Even in the event of war with a neighboring or foreign country, our industrial capacity to prosecute a war can be threatened within days of outbreak of hostilities. The Niger Delta Militant has shown them the way of crippling our war output.

We should plan our future power generation as if Nigeria does not have any gas reserves. Agreed that we have gas in abundance having the seventh largest reserves in the world and it is a cheaper source of power generation. However we cannot continue to delude ourselves that pipelines that runs primarily through the Niger Delta will always be secured. Someone is bound to rise up in the future, whether Avengers, Captain America, Iron Man or Megatron and destroy gas pipeline all in the name of "it is our oyel". While some of their agitation are legitimate, the country cannot be held ransom anytime some militants are in need of money. We will only be deceiving ourselves that the Military can effectively protect pipelines that runs hundred of kilometers in the most difficult terrains and creeks. Even if we employ drone, technology and other aerial surveillance, "the bomber will always get through" (Stanley Baldwin, 1932).

The government should explore various mix of power generation. The United States generates 40% of its power from coal and gas only makes 7%. Our focus should be on renewable energy sources such as Solar and wind which can be located close to the area of consumption. The hydro electric power generation has been around for more than 100 years and has always served it purpose. The government should expedite work on the Mambilla Hydro power project which will add 3000MW to the national grid. The Ikere gorge dam and Oyan dam both on the Ogun river have the potential to generate a combined power of 3000MW. There are other rivers that can also support hydro power potential.

The Government should build coal fired plants. There is abundance of coal in the South East of the country. Coals can be transported by railway to any part of the country. That is why an effective rail network is needed to connect all major cities in the country.

The government should unbundled the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and allow states, local government and even private bodies to transmit electricity. A state can decide to build a coal fired plant and transmit directly to its citizens rather than first sending to the National grid and geting next to nothing. The same goes for housing estates and industrial clusters who can generate and transmit their own power and sell the excess power to neighboring clusters or towns.

On the issue of Metering, the FG through the NERC must stop the exploitation of consumers by the fraudulent DISCOs. If not that it will hurt investors confidence, I would have suggested their licenses be revoked. They lack the technical and financial competences to run electricity distribution. The DISCOs were sold to friends and cronies who knew next to nothing about power generation.

Raji Fashola goofed by allowing them to increase tariff without appropriate metering. What he should have done is to give the DISCOs six months to meter consumers. After six months, un- metered consumers should not pay more than N2000 irrespective of energy consumed. If they are not metered after another six months, then they should not pay any bill till they are metered. A DISCO that can achieve 80% consumer metering can then be allowed to increase its tariff. I bet you, the DISCOs will rush and start installing meters. But now that the electricity tariff has been increased, they have no incentive or motivation to meter consumers again.

The Credit Advance Payment Metering initiative (CAPMI) is a fraud. Thank God BRF has realised that and ordered its cancellation. The DISCOs should enter into a financial agreement with meter producing companies to produce and install meters based on an interest rate. They companies supply the meters and get paid later in installments as the DISCOs collects payment from their consumers. That way they can be relieve of a financial burden and ensure that all consumers are metered within a period of 12 months.

We are at a crossroad, the sooner the government realise that actions and tough decisions must be taken, the better. But if they continue down the same path as previous administration, then they will know that power generation is indeed rocket science.

OP is absolutely right. The gas plant idea was for the sole purpose of arm twisting the government like it's happening now with the avengers. Like the avengers, many others will arise if they fail due to this grand plan that favours them. Although this idea came later as they became wiser especially during GEJ regime. But OP, what is happening is a simple law of power - always make your adversary depend on you. The north was fully aware of this from the beginning, that's why they were quick to buy into majority of the oil rigs in the Niger Delta to protect themselves. Just imagine the north having little or no stake there, Nigeria would have been history a long time ago

It can india gets solar at less than N20 per kw-h, so it cheap enoug for us to adopt.

Portugal for 3 days or more running powdered the whole of Portugal with renewable energy from windmill to solar and this one here is spewing ignorant nonsense.

How are industrial are you more than Portugal and Germany the largest economy in Europe that powdered the whole of Germany last week with renewable energy and not a drop of oil or gas?

Oil and gas is fast becoming a thing of the past and only foolish and irresponsible countries invests in fosil power plants these days.

Instead of spending billions of dollars on fosil power plants, we should be erecting windmills, letting rhe discos start installing roof top solar panels to supply uninterrupted power supply and charge same way they charge now. We wont even need transmission lines or other needless investments.

They should even be subsidizing solar installation with all the billions There are wasting on power plants.

There are too many easy way out, our leaders are just too slow and old in their thinking.

With solar and wind or other forms of renewable energy, norhing major breaks down and whatever is fixable in no time ans cheaply

You see my friend wind and solar are very expensive to maintain. Besides, erecting windmills that will generate the amount of power/megawatts Nigerians need will likely run into billions of dollars. Aside from the pollution and environmental degradation cause by fossil fuels/fossil power plants, it still remains our best option for power generation for the meantime. Why? Well fossil power plants have the capacity to generate huge amount of electricity in just one single place, but the average windmill or your solar can't do this. I don't think we should also ignore the efficiency of fossil power plants and its cost effectiveness.

I don't even think any power minister in Nigeria will ever ignore fossil power plants and venture into renewable energy when we have gas in abundance

The truth is this majority of Nigerian gas deposit are in the south eastern part of Nigeria, is that why they are not developed?? I don't know

I feel we should for once build to coal power plants of 10000mw each one in enugu and the other in Kogi trust it can be done and this will bost our power supply in the next 5 years

My brother, efficiency is only a problem when the source of fuel is expensive. Sun berekete for Nigeria. Cost, I must admit, is still an issue but that will change in the next few years

Fashola already mentioned diversifying our power generation sources.

OTOH, using gas for power generation is not the isssue, rather the location of the power plants that need the gas vs source of gas -- the whole power generation/transmission/distribution master plan is skewed and faulty from the get-go!

If the gas reserves in Lagos, Ondo, Abia, and Imo states are to be tapped into for plants for example, you don't need a rocket scientist to tell you, you have to site plant as close to source as possible . . . then you transmit from there.

The Alaoji (Abia), Aba Power (Abia) and Egbema (Imo) plants for example I think are closer to source (not very sure though).

Is Op high on some opium? Do you think people should ignore a very viable source of power because of your sentiment and bigotry? SE has large gas deposit hence can't ignore it's gas potentials. The almost five thousand mega watt power installation built or proposed in SE alone is all gas power sourced from south east. Why should we ignore gas powered plant since it is the easiest and purest fossil fuel source the region. Besides almost all are privately owned. So please leave south east or any part of the south south that pertain to south east out of your bigotry.

What are the powerplants I see in Oyo and Ogun states doing there? Are those states oil producing? The 'political' location of powerplants by Obasanjo is the problem!

Powerplants should be sited near the source of gas to facilitate their security.

Though Nigeria isn't an industrialised nation yet, but how many solar or windmills do you think can power a state in nigeria? Don't forget my friend, at a very low wind speed, the average windmill can't produce enough energy to overcome its internal frictions and some other losses. And if the wind gets too high, that's another problem again. Lol, can Nigerians beat that?

Nigerians that can't maintain common hydro and fossil power plants are now thinking of windmills and solar energy. Funny

Idk why you people underestimate renewable energy especially solar power. Do you know that only the landmass of Spain covered with solar panels is enough the entire world? Look at this link below

I'm just going to say something about solar power: solar power works best as a hybrid system (with back up from another source of energy to compensate for shortfalls)

You comment makes no sense. If it could overtake coal why not gas whose price is highly elastic? Read up the indian story and read up solar power cost-per watt reduction trend and stop talking as if we are in the 50's

If your fashola did say he wants to diversify our energy from fossil fuel/fossil power plants to renewable energy, than I don't think that man knows what he is doing as the power minister{besides the man is a lawyer so I shouldn't be surprised}. Even the industrialised nations that he is trying to copy were using coal, fossil power plants in the last century and even till date. How can any reasonable person ignore the abandoned gas we have in Nigeria and start looking for windmills/solar panels we don't have or produce?

@op coal is the largest source of energy.
From US to China more than 40 percent of their electricity energy come from coal.

Nigeria should forget this hydrocarbon and focus on coal.

Diversification and elimination are two different things.

Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola has reiterated the commitment of government in diversifying its energy mix for improvement in electricity supply.
According to the Minister, who spoke while receiving in audience the visiting, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mr. Yukiya Amano, the mix will go beyond the traditional sources of gas, oil and hydro to include nuclear and other renewable sources like solar, biomass and wind.
