Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 9 by Mekurexx: 4:08pm On Jul 11, 2016
It is necessary. If you are carrying dependents there is a quoted amount (i.e $3000 per dependent) in addition to tuition and other costs. It is the right thing to do. And it doesnt normally specify whether the child is a citizen or not. As long as you are an intl student, any other company is classed as dependents

Ok. Thanks. About the bolded,
Is the notification necessary if the child doesn't need a visa?

To the best of my knowledge, Grandma does not need to exit and waste ticket money after 5.5month.
All she need to do is apply for an extention of stay which can be done by contacting DHS. I have done this for someone before and it works perfectly fine. Since she is in status and can get a letter of support from her Intl office and present all required doc as required by dhs, she is good to go.

Also her best bet is if she can put her on her application and secure an F2 visa for her. By doing this you must be ready to explain to the VO that u r financially capable to take her along with you cos she is not allowed to work. Her F2 is as valid as your F1 status.

Note: there are lot of mom's over here looking for whom to leave their kids with so that they can go to work, sch etc. So grandma can make some cash for herself taking in more kids to look after with yours. I know peeps who also allow their grandma to do this as well. So just be prepared and u r good to go.

Ok if you say so, Grandparent for F2 ...
F2 visa is for Dependents which are defined as spouses and/or unmarried minor children.

According to DHS an intl student must complete 9 credit hours so as to be in status on F1. But I dont know if your school is given a special privilege. One thing I know is nothing is impossible in America.

At 6 credit that will take 3 years to complete .......Maybe its a special arrangement with the school but 6 credit is not the standard and will be considered out of status . If in doubt all information are listed somewhere online

The definition of dependant that I understand is someone who depends on you for survival but I might be wrong if this doesn't apply to US visa. The one in question cam make her researches.
She's right,F2 applies to only the F1 student's spouse or kids under the age of 21

Also at the POE, your i20 will be checked. And if it only shows provision for you alone and then you show up with your kid, I believe it will raise serious questions. That is the reason for the dependent notification on the i20 request form. Its best to do things accordingly

I believe you realize there is an option to take classes in the summer. For my program, with summer included it will still take 2yrs for completion. This subject is not up for argument as I specifically mailed my sch and they confirmed 6 is good. Plus take into consideration the total credits for programs differ. Lets not overflog this.

Since its just 1 kid you should be able to pull through. Alot of folks carry kids on Canada thread and they are coping. Last time i checked, masters is not everyday classes and before you register for classes you speak to your academic advisor to create a convenient timetable for you. Grad students(intl), the minimum is 6credits so u can work with that so you can balance both your studies and kid's affairs. Besides for affordability of sch, it depends on the state you are heading to plus city. Taking your grandma along wont be bad but pls don't listen to all this scare-mongering comments that most people here spit out. Just do your research and plan effectively. By the way you notify on your i-20 that you are carrying dependents, so visa for the kid shouldn't be a hassle

I don't mean to be rude to you, I just want to correct something quickly. Each department makes course schedule based on availability of classrooms and profs, it's been set before the semester even started. So I don't think any students can change the department course schedule. If a schedule doesn't work for you, you can always pick another class (for a large class such as for undergrad). For grads, the class is always small, so there is no way you would get 2 profs teaching this same course.

Secondly, grad students do go to school everyday, e.g in my first and second semester, I went to school everyday (i will screenshot the schedules for you later). I think my third was like that too. Finally, for a full time international grad students, minimum credit hours is 9 and max is 12 credit hours per semester and undergrad minimum is 12 credit hours per semester. However, for the grad students, you can be allowed to register as low as 1 credit hour in a semester if what's left in your totally credit hours is ≥ 1 credit hour or the last of your thesis is 1 credit hour.

Hahaha, ogbono made from heaven.. What I generally advise people to do is bring as much native wears as possible that is the one thing they will miss. Jean and tops plenty for amelika... The food aspect is taken care of by african markets but learn how to spot fresh food by going to market in nija here for a week or so and also learn how to shuffle places to get best cost.. A kilo of eggs in pereokrostal cost more than at the local market. So just compare before you buy to get a good price.

Better to get those things from Nigeria if you're coming as a student..and food too!..except you're coming with a lot of dollars. Not at the cost of an extra baggage though.

Nah you were not rude. I never made mention of course schedule. For most schools, you get to see list of courses (which indicates fall/spring). Convenient timetable is picking courses you will like to do that is convenient (time factor)(i.e having classes by 8pm, 6pm etc) my sch for example, u dont get to register for classes(grad students) till u arrive school and after orientation, u sit down wirh ur assigned academic advisor and work out a timetable; while some schools u register ur classes before u even leave nigeria. For the minimum credits, yes i know it is 9 but my sch, grad students it is 6 and classes is not everyday. One has the option of taking an online class(to make it 9)but 6 is OK. I was talking based on my sch specifically and not some hearsay info. I know the info i gave will be subject to scrutiny but it is not information I made up. So in summary schools differ

The kid is a US citizen. He/she only needs his/her passport...doesn't qualify as a dependent(F2).

The info I gave as regards to credits and classes is just for my school specifically. Always check and confirm with your school. Cuz I specifically asked my sch(intl office and cashiers)- even though the info was on the sch website, I wanted to be double sure. I'll try to be more general when responding. wink

A US citzen is not classified as F2 dependent ,hence you dont need any financial requirement or put it on the i20 (those are f2) .
The US Citizen child is seen as going home and passes through

But she is not a US citizen. Besides the kid is in Nigeria. Dont you think at POE she will be asked for proof of provisions made for the kid on the i20? It will be a big gamble if its not indicated on her I-20 cuz she will be traveling with the kid and her intent is to study

He or she can file an F2 visa for the toddler to accompany her to the states. The toddler in F2 status may attend a public school in the US. Don't know how old is the kid in question but they need to be in a day care or public school for the duration of the mom's study.

Angela I know your type I know your strategy, the last time you were outed on this thread for your 'I get citizenship' in 3 months on this thread you stayed away from this thread for a few days and you were back bombing, now you have been outed again you are using the lethargy here to slowly ingratiate yourself back on this thread, you know I did contact you too and if you mess up I am going to ask justwise to allow me release some information here, so just seat quietly, don't solicit for PM's and I won't release your scam account number here. To call you shameless will be shameful to shameless people.
