I imported the characters I sketched into toon boom traced them and rigged them (see definition of rigging in previous pages)and will show the process I followed in rigging the characters.
NB: I wont be typing much from now henceforth but will be making use of diagrams so I will be making the images as clear as possible for easy comprehension. Lets break down the different body parts by labelling them in the images below.

Re: 2d Animaton Learning Thread by chubbyswit(m): 1:26pm On Aug 30, 2016
These body parts where created on their own separate layers just like you have layers in photoshop so that we can manipulate them individually during animation. Some of the parts like the lips have multiple drawings on a single layer to simulate the different mouth shapes.

Re: 2d Animaton Learning Thread by chubbyswit(m): 1:27pm On Aug 30, 2016
After drawing and tracing, we then apply color to the different body parts and also shadows to give the characters a realistic look, more details from the diagrams below. NB: separate colour swatches was prepared for all the individual characters so that I can change any of them any time I want without affecting the others.

Re: 2d Animaton Learning Thread by chubbyswit(m): 1:29pm On Aug 30, 2016
One of the awesome features of toon boom harmony is that you can add any type of effect you want and even animate them without the need for a third party software like after effects and I used it to add highlights on the characters where they are needed as shown in more details on the dagrams below.

Re: 2d Animaton Learning Thread by chubbyswit(m): 1:30pm On Aug 30, 2016
NB: you can animate with flat colors without shadows and highlights, the essence of those is just to make your characters look more awesome and realistic and also to show you the process that top studios including Disney, nickelodeon, yowza animations, etc use to create their wonderful animations.

Re: 2d Animaton Learning Thread by chubbyswit(m): 1:31pm On Aug 30, 2016
Remember we created a full character turn around in photoshop? This is useful especially for a cut out 2d animation so that we can animate the character turning around seamlessly almost as good as a traditional 2d animation I illustrate with all the turn around angles of one the characters below

Rigging was done exactly same way we did in previous tutorials so wont type much on it but will briefly explain rigging with deformers with subsequent diagrams. It is defined as attaching bones and curves to a layer of drawing e.g arm or legs which can be used to manipulate the drawing during animation. E.g in the first image, a bone deformer is created on one of the legs and in the second image you can see how I can manipulate the rigged leg by moving the deformers around i.e after creating them.

The different parts where created in a similar way like the ada character below just that the neck, torso, waist, and the two legs are separate in this case.

next i will share steps i took while story-boarding using Photoshop. Remember that the basis of this particular tutorial is centered on how to create and animate cut out characters although there are a bit of tradigital elements in the scene.

Re: 2d Animaton Learning Thread by chubbyswit(m): 10:58am On Sep 30, 2016
Storyboarding simply means drawing the scenes of your story one shot at a time. It is done exactly the same way comics are drawn just that most times they are not drawn or coloured in detail like a comic would, but just series of rough sketches to guild the animator during animation. Put in another way, storyboards serve as guidelines for animation but comics are series of still images that wont end up being animated in most cases. Storyboarding is very important in an animation process to help the animators know how to go about the production of a story.
Infact, storyboarding should come immediately after the scripts and storyline has been prepared before moving on to voice over, character and scene development, animation etc. the images below shows two storyboard scenes that contains several shots. We will have to animate these shots and render each and everyone out one after the other then use adobe premiere pro to join them all together into a single movie clip towards the end of the animation.
