My degree is not a waste. I learnt beyond the lectures and tutorials. I didn't limit myself to the 'classroom experience.' It was a life experience for me.
what are u studying?

No. Not at all.

I love what I'm studying and I can't imagine myself doing something else.

There are so many thing I can do with a nursing degree and I am just hoping for opportunities to excel beyond expectations.

That's a cool course though. You know, you don't have to work in Nigeria

I am studying computer science now and i can tell you many of them don't know anything about programming big time yet

its a waste, and our curriculum is dumb
Depends on your school,
But the curriculum was changed last year to a more "programming friendly" outlook.

Computer science in Nigeria has been criticised severely but it is important to note that Computer science is not the same thing as software programming.

According to Wikipedia, Computer science is a study of the theory, experimentation, and engineering that form the basis for the design and use of computers.

Computer science is more of foundation knowledge, underlying math principles of computation and algorithms.
I used to think the same way you do.
But I realised that understanding how the computer really works, what goes on when it come to the level of "bits" , knowing when to use an array or a linked list for maximum resource effectiveness and other shit that programming classes won't start to tell you.
that's the advantage of being a computer scientist. I.e. if you really know what you're doing and understand data structures and algorithms well enough.

keep building yourself bro, thats the only way forward.

6 months to 2 years of vocational school or technical college to acquire certified SKILLS is more sensible for those who don't have plenty of money to avoid a difficult time in university or don't have relations to give you a job after studying for four years and spending so much money.

its seems you don't understand what op is saying. Tell me one Mechanical Engineer who has designed a car in nigeria for Nigerian use. But there are one million and one road side Engineers in ladipo spare part market converting, building cars without wasting 5 years in school. An average road side electrician doesn't know difference between parallel and series in electricity but can wire an estate with electricity.

No diploma or degree is waste of time.
The problem is many graduates don't know how to use their certificates when they don't find employment.

Do you know that five graduates contributing N50, 000 each can start a private Taxi Cab business with N250, 000 for a fairly used car and within a year will make enough revenue to purchase another car.
The best routes for taxi business in Lagos city are the following:
1. Victoria Island.
2. Ikoyi.
3. Ikeja GRA.
4. FESTAC Town.
5. Magodo GRA.

Taxi cabs on these routes make more money without stress. But taxi cabs in the ghettos make less money, because they cannot get regular commuters who can afford to pay well. And police officers in these areas are not as disciplined as those in the upper middle class and upper class areas of Lagos city.

You cherish your degree and not the knowledge gained? That is very revealing already.
So what have you designed or created and what engineering process have you optimised with your cherished paper certificate degree?

I can c different opinions, but come to think of it, is formal education jux for certificate like we ve here in Nigeria? with d way d Nigeria system work I'll say its a complete waste cuz even those dat studied theoretical courses like accounting n d likes will also testify dat wat dey were taught in school isn't wat is happening not to talk of engineering....... u mustn't b a graduate to b successful in ur field but in Nigeria u mux b else u re nobody in d society...... most of d Olympic athletes re either high school or college students but here in Nigeria once dey c u in sports dey tag u names. my point is our orientation need to change also our school curriculum needs to b dumped cuz its a waste. school isn't jux meant for book n certificate alone

Are you saying that one needs to spend money and time for a degree certificate in order to set up a joint kabukabu taxi business?
Interesting.

Can't you see that you are contradicting yourself.
Somebody studied Chemistry for 4 years and you are telling him to buy a taxi. What is the correlation there for all the knowledge acquired over the years in Chemistry

based on the majority votes and reasonable reasons..bottom line nigeria's educational system is a joke.. Most lecturer wnat u to write what they thought u not what u have spent your time researching... My chemistry lecturer does not know why carbon is used as a standard to determine RMM of elements... Sometimes I fell like I am wasting my time...if not for attendance I will not be in class I will teach my self and pass exam...!!

For me, I believe it's a waste of money and time!!

The current form academics is for those with the biggest memory space in their heads not those who actually want to be practical with what they learnt in school.

Imagine having only 12 courses in Economics and being forced by the University's rule to take 30 other different courses. It's all about the money not about education anymore.

I could have finished studying economics in 1 year but because schools want more money, you are forced to stay in school for 3 extra years of electives. Ain't that some shiit?

Many of the "mechanical" engineers have no dream of nursing a mechanical project that will justify their interest in studying mechanical engineering. Many mechanical engineers don't know shiit about motor engines than the 17 years old road side mechanic's son who is an apprentice in his dad's shop. That says alot about going to pay millions for some theory oriented academia.
Like seriously, you deserve a medal.....so on point

It some time annoying and frustration if u compare de stress and pain u go throu in schl to de unemployment situation and less motivational jobs available to graduate dis days. But to every tink of regrating y going to schl is absurd.schl is not a place made for certificate alone , but a place where u get certificate and training to make u a better person in de society

No knowledge is a waste.

Instead of pursuing knowledge, Nigerians pursue education for the title. No zeal. No passion. More often than not, parents choose courses for their wards.

Ever wonder why with millions of graduates in Engineering, Nigeria still depends on foreigners for major projects? Nigerians run to India and the West for major health conditions. An illiterate in the creek can refine crude oil but the so-called Chemical Engineers cannot formulate ordinary annointing oil.

I believe Nigerians have the wrong concept of education. They still live in the pre-colonial era. Sometimes the only way one can prove to be educated is by correct English grammar. Then you think about it. China, Japan, Russia, Germany and other technologically advanced countries do not speak nor teach in English.

Nigeria is a lost case.

Statements like this had been circulating in Nigeria since very long time ago as a student of education the following I found lacking or not well taught in our educational circles.
1. Only Nigeria students were oriented and groomed to see education as ends herself instead of being means to the ends.
2. The ultimate goal of education of developed countries is, education for self sustainability unlike Nigeria where the aim is to secure white-collar job.
3. The type of education out there is pragmatic or better described as functional system of education. Nigeria is not with an inch closer to this type.
4. Many of our highly rated educationist were actually certificated but not educated in real sense of it, this put us in dilemma of having many wrong role models around.
5. The crazy democratic system of government nko is big time flop and no nation can grow democratically above her democratic system of education.
Average individual who is doing well today in various human endeavor and of course sees their degree of being an opportunity to make a difference in life will never say that the degree is a waste of time.
