Biochemistry has been fun though but I don't think if given a second chance i'll go for it.
Good thing is- I can still be who I want to be.

So conclusively, while in my final year now I can say the school environment has opened my eyes, thoughts and mind to the real world especially the part where I went for industrial training in a fast moving city like Lagos.

School can't be a waste of time after all...

It can never be a waste. Even if one will need to learn a trade or whatever the degree u acquired will definitely give it a unique touch and make your own outstanding among others that did not go to school

It is a sad really but honestly university education in Nigeria is a waste. I happened to have studied business education. After 5 years of graduation I was only getting peanuts from the small teaching jobs I was managing then.

It was only until I ventured into business that I realized the precious time I wasted at school. Currently I am making not less than #250k monthly from my business.

You see the biggest players in many Nigerian businesses did not go to university. The acquired the knowledge the need on the field of their various trade.

If you must go to school, work and school!

Of course I regret it. I am not through with school yet but I have seen things. I should have used my time here to learn a trade, handwork or something.

Right now, I am doing some other things along with school. So many other things.


I don't think getting a job in Nigeria should be the ultimate dream.

Knowledge is never a waste. I have two degrees. I don't use the knowledge I got from them. I personally think education is overrated. Nigeria has entered a face China was 15years ago. In which young people have to be self sufficient. entrepreneurial skills is the most important here. The truth is education would never give you that.

We have over 25million unemployed graduate. 75% of these figure would never get a stable employment. In 30 years time if u ask them if their degree was a waste. They would tell you yes. For those who have figured it out now. The answer is a big yes.

You don't need a degree to succeed. Using your degree for paid employment would never make you self sufficient. It would only make you financially average all through life.

Gosh! This is ridiculous and absurd. Situations like this make those that didn't attain tertiary education think they are better off. Recently I was discussing with a graduate of computer science who I met at a building site where he was serving cement and bricks to Mason that didn't see the four walls of a primary school. The guy have also gone further to acquire divers certifications and have done professional examinations with success. I was shocked beyond imagination when he told me blatantly " I regret going to school. If the time and money I invested in my education has been invested in some other ventures, by now I would have been comfortable"

Off course but they should know some basic language i'm not a science student i studied politics in the Uni but i know how to program use Sql to set-up databases i also do penetration testing because i have passion for it. And i learned it myself by watching videos and reading books. But most computer sci lecturese/prof in Naija can't even write a single line of HTML code let alone C/C++ or Java. When i was in the uni i was the one helping the computer sci students in my hostel to do stuffs and i taught them some things they found difficult. Phurck naija education system.

Why do average students in Nigeria become excellent when they travel abroad, it's simpler and because of the education. To me, my education is a waste. I studied microbiology. In my school you are not even expected to read wide. Just garbage in garbage out. Just give exactly what was given in the note and you are a straight A student. You must know how to cram. I found out very late, in my 300 level. Most times I read with text book, and during exams, I explain it the best way I understood but it didn't help

Well being a graduate is fine, but its often blown out of proportion. Advance and industrialized lands do not harp on theoritical education for success,they are technically oriented. Speaking English for 30 minutes without errors is not the in- thing after all we have our eloquent English teachers in schools who earn 40k or less monthly. The earlier we recognize that education is over-hyped in this country the better it would be for us o.

using your degree for paid employment hardly makes you average, my Guy with a bsc physics was given a job by a secondary school under the request that he should teach full time and not have another teaching job elsewhere, his salary 10k per month, the Guy walked away. i have also noticed that most of those claiming that their degree was not a waste of time have generally failed to to tell us why. please let us back up our answers with reason, after all the university is supposed to teach us how to think.

ha ha, that approach denied me an a once and it was very painful, the lecturer actually didn't understand the textbook except she photocopied and ended up teaching us the wrong thing and marking it the right answer, i have also noticed that most lecturers especially in the north, are not even teaching what they studied, imagine a fisheries graduate teaching chemistry in a state polytechnic in the north? i rest my case.

The ONLY thing we gain from higher institution today is EXPOSURE and NETWORK.
They simply impart ideas of 1970s into our heads, that's all.
After spending 4 years in school learning things your ancestors learnt, you'll now need to spend like two years to study what your mates around the world are currently studying.

The current form academics is for those with the biggest memory space in their heads not those who actually want to be practical with what they learnt in school.

Imagine having only 12 courses in Economics and being forced by the University's rule to take 30 other different courses. It's all about the money not about education anymore.

I could have finished studying economics in 1 year but because schools want more money, you are forced to stay in school for 3 extra years of electives. Ain't that some shiit?

Many of the "mechanical" engineers have no dream of nursing a mechanical project that will justify their interest in studying mechanical engineering. Many mechanical engineers don't know shiit about motor engines than the 17 years old road side mechanic's son who is an apprentice in his dad's shop. That says alot about going to pay millions for some theory oriented academia.

According to you, mechanical engineer should know how to troubleshoot/ resolve faults in motors abi..
Go read more about cadres of field you have no knowledge of...

It's Nigerian system that need factory reset and not the graduates..
If engineer can easily find jobs in Total, Agip, NNPC, Ford Motor,.Peugeot, Toyota, TCN, Power generating companies,,Microsoft, HP, Apple, Foxcom, Nokia etc..
Economist/Accountants can also easily get in PWCooper, Banks, financial institutions....
Doctors/Nurses also finding and practicing their profession in the health sector easily....
All graduate getting a job strictly relating to their fields of study then everything will get back on track.
Experience is,a most and after years of experience in your field the next step is self employment to give way for other graduates.

computer science is one of the most abused fields in Nigeria's higher education system, it's a painful tragedy.

Be entrepreneurial. If they can refund me all my school fees, I would invest in a viable business. On the other hand, if I get a white collar job with the Degree afterall, I would still run a business on the side; I can't be waiting for the end of every month for salary for the upkeep of my household! The profits from a viable business and investment can be even more than your monthly salary sef!
