bigfrancis21:So why don't you come back? You want things to work properly without paying taxes and holding the government accountable? Is it the daily tribalism on Nairaland that's commendable? Tribalism from people of same skin is worse than racism from a different skin colour. I always say, if you must relocate abroad, do so as a legal migrant. Dude wants constant power supply, motorable roads, quality education system, top notch Healthcare without paying for it? Nonsense. |

Bollinger:Amusing..... I don't enter the UK with a visa, does that tell you anything? I was processing Canadian immigration visa up till the point of my final interview in Ghana. Some female canadian friend punched me when she said she could not imagine a black skinned lawyer in the streets of quebec. I instantly discontinued my immigrant visa application. The fact you are either constrained or challenged and will settle for anything does not mean we are all cast in the same mould. Chart your course and run with it. Enough said, or need i say more? |

Gerrard59:Well, like I mentioned in my post it is not about wanting to enjoy good amenities and not pay for them. It is simply about letting Nigerians like you know that America is not heaven and not bliss as you see it in movies, so be mentally prepared for a life of continuous hard work if you want to come here. America is not for a lazy man, otherwise one better sit their lazy a.ss back home. No I'm not complaining. I'm just telling it as it is. I rarely write about this and what I wrote was simply in response to what someone else wrote. You may not like my message or what I've said but what I wrote up there is just the reality of life in America. From your post you still don't understand how the system abroad works and was designed. Everybody who comes here, regardless of one's status in the country, is faced with getting their green card after all's said and done. You may not understand what this implies because you were born in Nigeria and automatically are a citizen with no need for work permits. However, it is different for an immigrant migrating to the country and even Nigeria is starting to implement a work-permit system for migrants from other countries to apply for and work in Nigeria. It's the same here in the US. Even as a legal non-immigrant to the US, such as a visitor or student, you are still faced with the daunting task of getting your green card when you're done with school or nearing the end of your stay of your visitor's visa, except you have a family member to file for you. Nigeria no longer qualifies for the green card lottery so that's out of the option. Let me reiterate that I am not discouraging anybody to come here. If you want to come, please feel free. That doesn't mean I won't tell those interested to learn the other side of America they don't see in movies, so that they are better prepared when they arrive. America is best for those who cannot hope for a middle-class life in Nigeria despite how hard they may work. America will give you that opportunity to own a house, drive a car, enjoy the beautiful weather and roads, etc. and offer you that middle class status you would otherwise not expect to have in Nigeria, but at a price. However, for those who already have a system (very good job, successful business etc.) established and going for them, it would be silly to pack up and go to the US all in the name of going abroad. 5 to 10 years down the line you'll regret it ostensibly. As a successful person in Nigeria you can always visit the US, shop around and spend as many months as you want. Yes there's tribalism in Nigeria. Nigeria has its ills. I'm not saying Nigeria is better. I simply said each country is better for whoever makes the most out of it. I know some people who would die to come to the US. I also know some people who left the US for Nigeria after finishing their studies and went back with a game plan to succeed in Nigeria. It all depends on the individual. |

If you want to know the truth, why look at people's face to know if they like you or not. do your own thing. be matured, nice and kind to everybody. Do not be dismayed about your color. One thing I have realized about some Africans living abroad is that they show themselves too much. On the road, this category are the ones that blast music with all windows of their cars open disturbing the neighborhood. There are Africans that are seen as leaders. Just respect them because you are in their land. Akon said something sometime ago in one of his interviews, he said that America is built for the whites, ppl misunderstood him. He meant that they planned and built their country the way it will suit them, eventually, it happened that they started having visitors. Just as you may want to build your house and you do not add boys/girls qtrs. Just chill, have fun in abroad, it is worth it. If you choose to come back to Nigeria, know that there is tribal segregation too in Nigeria. So, have fun, be meek and be wise as serpent. |

ShakurM:that is the typical survivalist mindset of the average african - not his fault though, it's an issue of orientation! that is why they keep perishing in droves across the desert and on the high seas trying to get to europe - the land of 'free flowing milk and honey' - only for most to get there and end up sleeping in the streets and subways and most of the girls end up in dinghy brothels! |
