It all happened on the 10th of October I left home in Ontario and decided to go on vacation in the beautiful city of st Petersburg with a childhood friend of mine who is White. When taking our usual tour walk with our complete papers and tourist passport, I observed that most people along the street kept on staring and moving away from us especially me....

We later discovered we've missed our way because we visited most of the tour centers with our map, so we decided to ask the locals around for help. When I approached them for direction, although we had issues with language difference they would just grin and shout out loud, some would run away and avoid me from getting close when I tried asking for direction.

I finally discovered I was been avoided because of my dark skin colour, so i asked my friend to do the questioning while I stood far away but there was no way they could help even with the map due to the language difference. They offered assistance by pointing to a police stand we went there with the intention of asking for direction, the two policemen shook hands with my white friend but ignored shaking hands with me, after giving us directions on how we could get a cab that will take us to our hotel, we thanked them and we were about leaving the policemen called us back and asked what I'm carrying in my backpack. I told him I have my papers some money and my lunch. He took the bag from me checked it himself he saw my papers were complete yet he refused returning my backpack, i got very angry and asked him to return my backpack yet he refused my friend tried pleading yet he refused...

What made me angry was because he didn't ask for the contents in my friend's backpack when he saw how furious and angry I've become, he returned the backpack and started raining abusive racist word in both Russian and English. I threatened him I would file a complaint to the Russian Police, and told him I would file legal actions against him. After threatening him, he stopped the insult and in a few minutes a police car drove to our scene i believe the locals around contacted the police. A superior officer from the police vehicle apologised on his behalf, he was also asked to apologise which he did reluctantly the most embarrassing part of it was when all the drama was unfolding the locals around gathered to catch a glimpse of what was happening while others took pictures.

We finally got back to the hotel I was very angry all through, I had to reschedule for the next flight and I went back home the next day.

All through my lifetime I have never been subjected to such a degrading and embarrassing moment.

RACISM IS BAD #SAYNOTORACISM

Sorry for the embarrassment. Racism has degrees. But travelling to Russia or any East European country for vacation is a no.

I am presently living, working and studying for my masters degree in Russia (moscow to be prescise). I walk alone and do my things on my own. I get home anytime even if it's 2 am in the midnight and I have never been harrassed. So I know what I wrote. Ok? As a matter of fact, the worst Racist country in the world is America.
Do you know how many racists are in jail here in Russia. In case you don't know we have different kinds of Russians. Have you heard of Kafkas and Skinheads before? You see why I said you should do your investigations and research well before writing what you don't know. Just come to Russia and see how Nigerians are everywhere some are even married to Russian women for over 20 to 30 years and have never complained.

It's shocking man. This is why I did not even bother replying the clown (see directly above your assertion) that quoted me while drawing baseless comparisons to tribalism in NGR. Evidently he is YET TO EXPERIENCE any of such (ditto the many other ignorant views which have toed his dumb line of his reasoning on this thread). You will clearly notice such folks (he and his ilk on here) by their ludicrous pseudo-intellectual positions on the issue.
Heck! Comparing Nigerian-brand intra-national tribalism with institutional, overt and covert racism faced by people because of their colour in many parts of the world? Lol

bookface:

I am surprised by the comments i see here.

Most of you that compare tribalism to racism don't really know what true racism feels like.

You haven't yet experienced being publicly humiliated, discredited, and lowered in a foreign country, all just because of your skin colour. It is not an experience i would wish on an enemy.

You haven't experienced the monkey calls, being spat at, assaulted, or trampled on - you haven't felt being hated, for no single reason at all. Unless you take a mile walk in OP's shoes, then stay in your quiet village, eat some cassava and shut the hell up!

Lol.

One thing I ever come to notice in my little sojourn is that you have to be bold and confident. Any act of meekness makes you an easy target.

I mostly don't move around alone here in Cluj, Romania anymore. When I first got here, people were very very curious and stare a lot. It used to make me uncomfortable but somehow, I got bold. Walk and talk with boldness. That way, you intimidate them.

I am uses to walking with my female Polish housemate and friend People used to think we are lovers because we walk around the city together most times. So they always stare at an 'interracial couple' and we do get a lot of jealous looks from the young women, spiteful looks from the old people and young men and hear lots of comments, mostly curious.

So today, we were walking instead of taking a bus to a shopping centre about 20minutes away. Halfway, these two guys came, likely Romanians or Hungarians in their mid 30s. They kept walking up to us with the idiot shouting " Hey man, what are you doing in my country? Go back to your country and leave my country " blah blah blah.

I just ignored him, continued walking slowly and MAJESTICALLY and with real swagger and boldness while chatting hilariously with my friend. When he saw I wasn't intimidated, he had to stop cos I was making him look really stupid.

One thing about Eastern Europe is that they have not been exposed to people of other cultures. I go out almost everytime and never come across black people. I have only seen 2 blacks since I've been in Cluj.
Boldness is just the solution.Make the Orangutans/baboons look stupid since they think we are apes; D

I didn't say you are lying , I'm saying they thought you are American. They hate Americans with passion. If they know u are African they won't give 2fks about you. Your White friend can pass for European, the fact that you are site seeing and your dressing .
Re: My Racism Experience During A Vacation In Russia by Nobody: 9:36pm On Oct 14, 2016
OP, thank you for this .

I had occasion to travel to Moscow in the year 2000 a relative was murdered by the police and dumped in the woods.

The racism in Moscow was very real, the Nigerians I spoke to says that they were not able get even menial jobs, If they start a business or buy a home criminal elements / mafia may at time forcefully steal their business or homes if it becomes profitable; so most Africans resort to any hustle they could manage to do to survive.

Even if they decide to go home they would not allow them to carry any money or anything of value. The Russians often allow resident Africans to go with only some clothes. One person who decided to return home eventually was only allowed to go home with a single plastic grocery carrier bag.

On a crowded train somebody punched my arm and my sister who I was on the train with later told me that she was punched in the back on the same train ride when I was telling her how somebody punched my arm as we left the train at our stop.

Moscow was a beautiful city infrastructure-wise but the Russian racism spoilt it. It couldn't wait to leave Russia.

We blacks are the worst racist I've ever seen. When we see the white, was celebrate it, tend to give more reference to them while we spite our fellow black.
I had a bitter experience of that while at work on a deep offshore rig, where the overall crew lead ( a Nigerian) kept talking to this Trainee U.S citizen who was junior to me. It was obvious the white guy wasn't interested in the lead yet the lead guy kept talking to him. The worst part of it was that the lead was afraid of assigning tasks to him, while he expects me to do, especially all the manual job. I'd just carry to guy along in the Name of ' this is how you learn and grow on the job'. I enjoyed the drama.
Finally, you dare not call the lead guy by his first name ( of which the modus operandi for a multinational company like ours was calling Everybody by the first name). You just have to put 'Oga *****' or you'll find your name on the chopper manifest the next day.

Let's stop racism again ourselves first!!!

I was born in Moscow in 1961. My dad was a Cuban revolutionary who came to Moscow to study philosophy. He fought with Fidel Castro and Che Guevara in Cuba; when I turned one, he went to fight with Che in Bolivia. I only saw him once.

My mum, my brother and I lived in a very small communal flat in Moscow. When I was five, my mum got very ill. She was taken to hospital, and me and my brother were sent to a children’s home. We spent three years there.

When I started school my mum took us back. My childhood was not easy, but I have always been proud of being black. Growing up I got a lot of attention, and a lot of it was not good. Russia is quite a chauvinistic country. They don’t like black people here.

Did you read this part in my comment: Have you heard of Kafkas and Skinheads before? You see why I said you should do your investigations and research well before writing what you don't know. Just come to Russia and see how Nigerians are everywhere some are even married to Russian women for over 20 to 30 years and have never complained.

A typical Russian citizen will never bully or even abuse you, maybe there are some I haven't come in contact with but the ones I know have business with wealth and money. Yes there is racism in Russia but not by the real Russians. A typical Russian has "blonde hair" and not dark hair or skin heads. Look at the video very well and you will see that those guys are dark headed guys (kafkas). These kafkas are everywhere in the middle east causing troubles. You will also find them in some parts of Germany, Ukraine, Belarus, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan etc. Funny enough these people can't have a seat of power in Russia. It's like Africa where we have fulani scattered all over causing troubles for us, that's how kafkas and Skinheads are. Many of them are illiterates compare to the real Russians.

I have read many articles long before I left Nigeria so that article isn't new to me. If I may ask, do you know the origin of Fulani in Nigeria and other parts of West Africa? The same question is what people ask about Skinheads and Dark headed (kafkas) in Russia. If you think I am lying ask those living in Germany who are "Skinheads" and ask those who are living in middle east who are also Kafkas, they are the racist you hear of in Russia and other parts of middle East.
Ask Google for more information. I dey go tour today.
