Uko that is ISPON standard, they are not after ur money, it is nt owned by any individual. HSE COMPETENCE DEVELOPMENT LEVEL 3 IS higher than General HSE but less expensive but you must do General HSE first,

Good day house. I just stumbled on this thread; kudos to everyone and I'm glad to be here. I am a certified Lead Auditor of ISO 14001 and currently awaiting my result of OHSAS 18001. Please do we have consultants in the house, with whom I can tag along and gain practical auditing experience (I'm not looking to be paid, your time, mentorship and the experience I'll get are far more than their weight in gold), particularly on Saturdays? I'd appreciate all the experience I can get. Please quote, PM or any other form of contact is highly appreciated.
Thank you so much.

When did you do your OSHAS 18001? you shouldn't have done it because by next year OSHAS 18001 will be phased out and would be replaced by ISO 45001. I don't mean to be negative but you should have done your research before taking the OSHAs 18001.

All the best any ways.

And I have a friend who is a very good auditor, I am not promising a placement from him but I can guarantee that you will learn a lot from him. if your interested PM me your name and phone number and I will connect you to him.

Remain blessed.

Good morning and thank you. I did the OHSAS 18001 very recently; the company I work for just got certified in OHSAS 18001 so it became pertinent to train internal auditors to maintain the certification. We're aware that it would soon become an ISO standard and a transition training will be done subsequently, as at when due. I'll pm you my details, and hopefully something comes out of it.
I appreciate the gesture.
Thank you so much. Cheers

Novelle:
@Agabusta and

You're still wrong my dear friend. Let me contribute here as Novelle Center (A training provider). I think the information you guys give out here is the reason why lots of Nigerians are more confused than ever. There is nothing like semantics here, rather you need to understand how these things work.

Firstly, this whole Occupational health and safety as an industry is legally framed with the following compartments:

1. Content Developers/Regulators
2. Training Providers
3. Examining/Certifying body
4. Membership/Induction body

1. Who are this content developers/Regulators: simply put, they are incharge of building the contents used in health and safety training, practice and management. Their primary task is to regulate the body and ensure compliance of standards. They are the ones responsible for giving titles such as Electrical safety, chemical safety, plant safety, working at heights and even the Acts/Regulations that guide occupational health and safety training, practice and management.

Their limitations: They dont issue certificates, they dont provide training, they dont certify. All they do is regulate. E.g HSE (i.e. Health and Safety Executives)

2. Who are Training Providers: simply put, they are incharge of training and imparting the knowledge of occupational health and safety. Their primary task is to help the students understand areas to engage in health and safety practice. For example, a novice can walk up to a training provider and say, please I want to build a career in Health and safety. The training provider will ask him questions relating to his passion, skills, educational background, career ambition. And thereafter, guide him on the related course to choose from.

Their limitations: They normally should not issue certificates, as such certificates cannot be recognised. All they are empowered to do according to the law is to simply train you and prepare you to be write exams which will be set by examination/certification bodies. E.g. Novelle Center can never issue you a certificate bearing its name and claim the certificate is recognised. Why? because Novelle Center according to the law is not empowered to issue certificate. other examples of training provider are Sheilds, Astutis, SMTS, Genesaret, Lonadek, OSHAcademy etc.

3. Examination/Certification bodies: simply put, are incharge of certifying if an individual is empowered and knowledgeable for the career of Occupational health and safety, and the shortest way they do this is simply by setting an examination. After candidates pass this exam, they certify you accordingly. Examples are NEBOSH, RoSPA, RSPH. This is what ISPON should have become, rather they are playing almost the entire role of regulating, training, certifying, and membership which in all fairness is not the right way to go.

Their limitations: They are often times not empowered to train, or build contents. The only thing they are empowered to do is simply examine and certify candidates. You hear things like "this is to certify that Mr XYZ having passed this exam in___ is now fit as a certified in ___".

4. Membership/Induction body: simply put are incharge of providing membership to those who having being training, examined and certified which to be recognised as professionals. Example is IOSH,IIRSM.

Their limitations: They do not training, they do not certify, they do not examine, their main function is to endorse successful candidates to become members.

I understand that most persons in this forum are basically doing everything within their power to promote ISPON which in my opinion is okay, but in all fairness you should try and provide a balanced judgement. Lots of people visit here to get proper information.

Thanks

hi there.first off,two thumbs up for all the free info u guys are giving to people taking their first tentative steps like us.i recently completed d nebosh igc qualification (with novelle, incidentally),and I'd like to acquire more HSE-related skills as I understand from previous posts that the IGC is not the be all and end all.which way is the absolute best way to go?I'm considering IRCA's OHSAS 18001.Thing though is I'm still in the stage of self development, and apart from a 6-month internship at Shell, not much in the way of work experience. If it counts for anything,i've got a BSc,Applied Geophysics, doing a masters in geoinformatics.Would u recommend OHSAS 18001(or 45001)for someone like me?Your thoughts'd be highly appreciated. Yes usually you should be able to. But I dont think you will compete favorably with others. There are a lot of young brilliant Nigerians who have degrees and then ISPON and NEBOSH to back it up.

Recall/Be informed that ISPON only covers levels 1, 2 and 3-Appreciation/Basic Practicals Certification. NEBOSH IGC is level 6 which in the UK is equivalent to an OND. So with ISPON and NEBOSH you are like an OND Holder, trying to compete where BSc. and MSc. holders rule the day and night.

But then who said anything was impossible.

The question is, what value will going further add to your career. As it stands you have a Bsc. Applied Geophysics, MSc. Geoinformatics-In View and an OND in Occupational Safety and Health. Is there a need to go further than this with respect to having HSE/OSH Appreciation/Application knowledge? If you consider and you think you need to go further because you see some future advantages then yes.

You can either:

1. Go the seeming academic route-NEBOSH IDip and then Msc. in HSE Engineering, then PHd. in safety sciences, then become a professor- smiley

2. And/or professional route by doing other professional courses e.g. BSC courses, OHSAS, ISO 45001, ISO 31000, other applicable specialized NEBOSH Certificates etc.

As per OHSAS 18001 I will advise you wait for ISO 45001. Recall/be informed that the replacement of OHSAS 18001 with ISO 45001 is imminent- it will become the ISO standard for health & safety management to adopting countries. ISO 45001 is also being designed to integrate more easily with ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management). JUST THAT IT MIGHT NOT HAPPEN UNTIL EARLY 2017.

If you want to go the NEBOSH route then you can try the IDip. But that is not yet offered in Nigeria the last time I checked-Dont know if Astutis International has started/still on. In the past I intended to save for Dubai or the USA and go do it there-as opposed to the U.K. With NEBOSH IDip you are usually allowed in the U.K. to go do an MSc. in HSE Risk Management etc. But then as God will have it I got a scholarship to study Safety Engineering and Management Overseas-France. You can also try other NEBOSH Specialized courses like NEBOSH International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety.

Mind you I DO NOT HAVE ANY NEBOSH CERTIFICATE. I HAVE AN Msc. in the HSE Engineering Discipline which is at a level higher than NEBOSH-Perhaps at a level 10. Only NEBOSH IDip -Level 8- comes a little close to what I learnt while studying for my MSc. in Safety Engineering and Management. But I still yearn to go do my NEBOSH IGC preferably at Novelle- Not advertising for them- and follow up with the NEBOSH IDip overseas just for the hell of it.

But then that is me. You must find out your own path based on your future aspirations and needs. In this discipline, we dont stop learning and freshening our knowledge, skills and expertise.
