The problem is that we try to understand everything about God. The bible says that God has chosen to reveal certain things to us because if He reveals everything about Himself, we will not be able to comprehend it.

You're trying to say you are not aware that other religions exist or what? And you want to save the world with your limited exposure? Many folks know Christianity is a religion of freedom in the sense that even God doesn't force any one to follow Him, the choice has always been up to the individual grin

With an honest aim of understanding the nature of God and his wonder displayed in nature, I had set out on a quest for 'truth'. As a very inquisitive person, a sound background in scientific methods further fueled my already curious and inquisitive nature beyond normal.

As a kid, I asked several questions;
"Since God created everything that exist, what if God never existed, and hence nothing whatsoever exists? I often tried to picture a dark and void space remaining that way for all of eternity!! Whenever I did, I got lost in my wild imaginations"
"How did God come to be? Who created him?"
"What if God never created life? How would the earth be then? I often repeated same imaginations again but this time with planets, asteroids and other heavenly bodies. Of course I got lost again, severally"
"What if I was never born? So I would never have experienced the beauty of life? Scary!"
"Why did Lucifer ruin the Paradise? For Christ sakes we all would have been there now. Why didn't God even kill Lucifer at once earlier to prevent it? He knew the future!"

I grew up into a devote Christian with different questions;
"With the so many religions on earth could we possibly be worshipping the same God in different ways?"
"If the God I worship in the bible is the one true God and creator of the universe, would he destroy non-christians in hell simply because they worshipped him wrongly?"
"Would God really condemn a devote Christian to hell after years of righteous living simply because he erred one time and dies without repentance? Would he now allow a person who has done heinous things into paradise simply because he finally accepts the salvation story in the end?". I had many more questions that bothered my mind but I'd stop there.

These questions didn't matter so much as I still upheld the Bible as truth and lived by its doctrines. On a second thought they must have sown the seed of doubt in my mind; a seed that came to germinate later on.
A lot of things happened during my undergraduate study that shook my belief but for the sake of brevity, I'd mention a few..
I held the opinion that "compared to clerics, scientists better understood the awesomeness and magnificence of God". Come to think of it this way, with every scientific discovery, scientists reveal God's wonder in nature while clerics keep 'recycling' doctrines written in our ancient Holy Bible. The beautiful works of God in nature were unreconcilable with the barbarisms attributed to him in the bible. When some Bible claims corroborate with scientific findings we're good, but when 'outrageous' claims are found in the Bible, we are convinced that they're metaphorical with deeper meaning. Gradually, it became obvious that science had more credence compared to religion. My religiosity reduced drastically as well as my total trust in the bible as ultimate truth. Not sure anymore, I wondered if there's a creator (God) or not. I mean, 'the Bible must have so poorly described God' I thought.

Aside from bible, I sought knowledge of God from various books on religion, spirituality and nature. I read the Qur'an and it bored me. I came across "Earth's Chronicles, The 12th Planet, and other controversial books by Zecharia Sitchin. They were indeed controversial, and I asked myself 'how did he know all those things?' The works of Thomas Paine is worthy of mention. I agreed with him largely, especially his 'Age of Reason'. I discussed my thoughts with another 'thinker' (I choose not to mention his name) and he introduced me to the 'Sumerian Texts', the 'Epic of Gilgamesh' among other amazing books. Wow! What have I been doing. They shared similarities with the Bible so I couldn't help but wonder and ask more questions. 'Did I believe in a big lie all these while?' ...

There's nothing wrong asking questions.

Just go to www.jw.org.
You will find the best answers to your questions.

I lost my belief in God too as my knowledge about God grew . I don't believe God exists , I know God exists .

Pulling away from religion does not mean you are agnostic or an atheist , its more of deism . Even MrPresident1 , a savant of the scriptures , will tell you that God isn't in organized religion .

Never let the atheists inveigle you into becoming one of them . Atheism is darkness and mental slavery .

Remain blessed .
hmmm so you believe that the God of the universe has remained indifferent to it's creation. Well you may not be wrong deism makes more sense than believing in a personal God
I personally think Agnostism is the best stand anyway. I mean you have to know everything to make that kind of claim that a God or Gods don't exist.

It's your choice! Every entity including where you work, school, and your family has a head, so does this world. GOD is the head. You will answer to HIM when the time comes. Heaven or hell, your choice to make. Others can state it euphemistically, I won't. Accept JESUS CHRIST and be saved to an eternal life with GOD in Heaven, or live as though you were your own god and secure for yourself a one-way ticket to hell.

There is no compulsion in Christianity! Choose whom you wish to serve. To GOD be the glory, I have chosen to follow JESUS CHRIST forever!
Re: I Think I'm Losing My Belief by zfinix: 9:42pm On Oct 25, 2016
The Apostle's Creed begins by saying, "I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth." Everything about Christianity begins with belief in God. Without this foundational belief, no other beliefs are possible, especially pertaining to God sending His Son. Without God, there is no Son of God.

This is why being sure of God's existence is the foundation of Christianity. In this article, I will present the clear evidence of God's existence and how logically we can move from this surety to surety about Jesus Christ.

1. The Universe cannot exist without a Creator

The first fact that proves God's existence is the existence of the universe. No rational person doubts that the universe exists, so how and why did it get here? In biblical language, the Scripture starts with, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Gen 1:1). This statement declares that the universe has a beginning. It started at some point that we call time.

Outside of the Bible, how do we know that the universe has a beginning? Science affirms that the universe began by discovering that the universe is ever expanding. Why is an ever expanding universe important? Because, as you work backwards from expansion, there must be a place and time called the beginning. In scientific terms, the beginning is called the big bang. Scientists can investigate what happened at the first point of time, but there is no explanation outside of an Agent producing the first action within time. In other words, creation was made and you cannot have "nothing" making "something." That means the universe was created! You can call the universe "creation."

The Bible, along with science, affirms an expanding universe, thus logically a Creator: "Thus says God the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread forth the earth and that which comes out of it, who gives breath to the people on it,
and spirit to those who walk in it" (Is. 42:5). The imagery beautifully portrays the expansion of the universe with the language that God "stretched them out." It's a picture of a tent maker who stretches out the tent to be inhabited. The tent, at first, is wrapped tightly with ropes, and then the maker unties the ropes and expands the tent.

Science affirms that the universe is expanding at the speed of light, and interestingly the first act of creation, according to the Bible, is God making light, "God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light" (Gen 1:3). This is not the creation of the sun, for that did not come about until the fourth day of creation.

Prior to the discovery of the expanding universe and the logical conclusion of the big bang, atheists in times past argued that the universe was eternal, and thus no one or no agent or no being needed to make it. If it has always been here, they argued, then no Creator is necessary to explain the universe's existence. But the big bang proved that something had to precede the first action of creation. Otherwise, the conclusion is that "nothing" made the universe. Logic demands that something, even greater than the universe, must exist to cause the universe to exist. And the cause of the universe must be uncreated, outside of time and beyond matter. This is the biblical description of God—uncreated, eternal and invisible.

No wonder the Bible says, "The fool has said in his heart, 'There is no God'" (Ps. 53:1). A person has to intentionally fail to use his mind and logic in order to come up with the ludicrous conclusion that God does not exist. If God does not exist, how does one explain the fact that the universe exists, unless a person wants to deny the existence of the universe?

The Apostle Paul puts it this way, "The invisible things about Him—His eternal power and deity—have been clearly seen since the creation of the world and are understood by the things that are made, so that they are without excuse" (Rom 1:20). Paul is saying the fact that the "creation" exists means the "Creator" exists. You cannot have one without the other.

Why do atheists insist on trying to undermine the beginning of the universe? They do so because they know logically that would mean a Creator has to exist. They get it, but instead of accepting the logic of the beginning, they deny there is any beginning or conclude that the universe came from nothing. This of course, makes no sense.
2. We are made to think of our Creator.

The second proof of God's existence is our ability to consider God. I call this a God-consciousness. This God-consciousness is universal. It is inside of every human being. The Bible explains why we think of God at all. It says, "Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being" (Gen 2:7). The description is beautiful. God took something of Himself (Bible use the pronoun Him to refer to Himself1) and puts it into humans. By doing so, humankind is made in the image of God. He and she has something inside of them from God. This is God's connection to humankind.

It's similar to Google's iCloud. All your data is stored and reserved in a much bigger computer. All computer devices connected to iCloud are connected to something beyond their own computers. There is a connection from each computer to a much larger computer "in the cloud." Do you get the biblical imagery?

God put a connection of Himself into human beings, so they would be able to think about Him. The fact we can contemplate God's existence at all is proof that He exists and wants to be connected with us.

God gives humans the freedom to deny the divine connection. That is what atheists do: they say that God does not exist. But God does not give them the freedom to not think about Him or have a consciousness of Him. They cannot help it. Even atheists think about God, they just don't want to think He exist.

Anthropologists have often concluded that humans appeared hard-wired to believe in God. It's as if they cannot help it. It is difficult to be an atheist. One has to try very hard to deny the inner consciousness of God.

Animals, on the other hand, do not think of God at all. They are not atheists; they are "non-theists." That is, they do not think one way or other about God. They neither say "yea" or "nay" to God. They don't contemplate God at all. The Bible gives us the reason: Animals were not made in God's image. God did not breathe into animals the breath of Himself. He did not put a divine connection inside of animals.

What is the chance that every animal on the planet are "non-theists"; yet humans are theists by nature?

The reason we can believe in God is because we alone have the power to speak words. We can communicate intelligently. This should not surprise us, because being made in God's image means we should, to a certain degree, be able to imitate God. The most important fact of creation is that our Creator made everything by speaking words. "And God said." Then after making us, we have the ability to speak words like the Creator. The first thing Adam does, according to the Bible, is name the animals. This involves logic and speech. It is the ability to speak words that creates within us the consciousness of God.

We are the only creatures on the earth that talk. This is another connection we have from God and also contributes to our God-awareness.

3. The creation is a moral universe, thus confirming a moral God.

The third proof of God's existence is the fact that He made a moral universe. Morality is divine. Morality is unchanging. There is a right and wrong; good and evil. C.S. Lewis, who was an atheist turned Christian, argued that a moral universe proves a moral God. As an atheist, he had wondered how he got the concept of good and evil. There could only be one logical explanation: The universe is moral. Not only does morality prove God's existence, but it reveals the kind of God He is.

I suppose the greatest failure of atheism is a denial of morality. You see, if there is no God, there is no right and wrong, good and evil. The only ethical system for atheists are those that are created by society. For an atheist, it is only wrong to kill if society makes it illegal.2 For them, it's not wrong simply because it is intrinsically wrong. It is wrong because society says it's wrong.
For atheists, ethics keep evolving; however, morality does not. Right is always right. But the trouble with atheism is there is no outside, verifiable right and wrong, since they deny God and, with Him, divine morality. They become their own gods to create an ethical system by which others must follow. There is great evil that comes from this system. For example, the Nazis gave orders calling for the "final solution." This law gave officials legal authority to kill the people in the concentration camps. Now was this law evil? Was killing people in the camps evil?

Atheists cannot really logically answer in the affirmative, because they deny the God who makes a moral universe. But those of us who affirm God's existence confess that morality exists first with God and then He makes it known to us through our conscience. Thus, the holocaust was evil.

The conscience connects us to God's justice. We are the only creatures with a conscience. This inspires us to act in very noble ways, something beyond the scope of animals.

For example, we can choose to care for a disable person, simply because it is right. Although logically there is no reason, outside of morality, to protect and take care for disable people, we do it because of our conscience. This is only one example of our conscience leading us to nobility.

Our conscience is proof that God, along with giving us a God-consciousness, also gives us a moral compass by which we are accountable to Him to live our lives properly. We feel guilt when we do wrong. Even if the wrong is not illegal, we still feel guilt, because the conscience is accountable to the Creator, not to government or society.

So the existence of the conscience and its accountability to unchanging morality is another proof of God's existence.

Can you name any apostle/disciple who applied such logical thinking pattern

There were notable Logicians (INTP personality-type) who believed in God - Isaac Newton , Rene Descartes and so many more .

Even sef , Rene Descartes' philosophical proposition "cogito ergo sum" helped me understand how God thinks .

Logical thinking helped me develop a small theory on how God thinks . smiley

It also helped me with this inchoate theory - the logic of God and everything : https://www.nairaland.com/2973792/atheism-dead-logic-god-everything

...Gradually, I had stopped going to my church as frequently as before. They had nothing new to teach me. I also began to form my opinions using empathy, rational enquiry, logic and reason rather than religious dogma. I dropped all my superstitions in favour of evidence about the natural world and things in it. I sought to understand the cause of things rather than stare at them in awe and ascribe them to unseen forces. I accepted reality, made informed decisions about my life and took responsibility for outcome of these decisions.

I suddenly developed this 'strange' love for all of humanity irrespective of religion, culture and race, as much, I try to make it enjoyable for everyone around me. Afterall, what's the point in hoping for a blissful afterlife while living a miserable life. I never felt so happy with so much satisfaction. Unfortunately, I tend to disagree severally with religious people on some issues, especially family. It's quite disheartening that they perceive me as 'bad' & 'lost'. All these happened within the space of 3 years, just before my graduation.

I joined Nairaland earlier but recently stumbled on a post and to my amazement, I wasn't alone after all. I'd love to met some people here in person e.g Johnny, winner, sharon and Seun. You guys are great. Though the atheists make such sarcastic arguments, their points are valid most of the time, while many Christians know so little about religion. These arguments really did a good job in further weakening my belief in the Bible God. If He is there, he'd understand my reasons for doubting the Bible account of him. He should be a just judge.

- Akdegreat

First of all, neither the bible nor koran nor Torah is an authority on God. So, if the bible or koran or Torah is your basis for belief in God (like many people do), then you got it all wrong from the beginning. Because, God has nothing to do with religion!.

All religion is simply man's attempt to explain those things you're wondering on. Of course, man is not perfect, so its wrong using man's imperfection to justify you'll rather be an atheist.

Having said that, I'm really interested in the bolded above. When you actually understand the concept of God, you'll arrive at the conclusion in the bolded, and religious people (like your family members) would actually not realize you have the truth. That's exactly what happened to Jesus. When Jesus came up with his own version of God and how to believe him, his people rejected it as blasphemous.

If you actually keep digging deeper and questioning everything, you'll discover God for yourself.

This is so true, being an atheist filled me with a deeper appreciation for life. It gave me something I never had with Christianity, which teaches you that the world was made for humans, this fills you with so much arrogance. The world is going to end anytime soon so we all shouldn't care anyway. Jesus is coming.
As an atheist I see the world as an interconnected system, we need to preserve it. Last time a toad entered my house I couldn't even kill it, I know and accept it plays a role in our ecosystem as do all life.
Atheism revealed me to humanism,.. i was a bad ass hating christian, i believed i was a special son of God and had no iota of feeling on my fellow human,. now as an atheist, i help the less privileged, i love animals more, infact i became a Vegan afterwards. i love all humans now no matter their condition or my condition. this revelation shows that EVERYTHING is wrong with Religion

@OP, don't lose your theist orientation instead change your workdview. There's is God (creator). However, the easiest way for an inquisitive mind to become an atheist is by being or becoming a religious proponent and practitioner - especially a Christian. Foremost, the bible and other of the so called holy books are not standard of what God is. He didn't inspire the author's. . . . This doesn't make the books and its contents useless, no. They are still great books written by some of the most enlightened entities of the yore. They are human conceived thoughts and made, thus their imperfections. An unchangeable God couldn't have inspired an old and new testaments as evident in the bible. As human beings, we're imperfect manifestation of the perfect God.

Before I go on, I, for one, is tolerant of every human beings, so I hold no ill against religious people. However, I relate with people based on their attributes not even attitudes.

Since it's expected that an action must takes place before a reaction will occurs, then permit me to say that the action in this simple analogy represents the God I know. He's just. And he has no rival. Good and evil are creations of our actions and inaction. A gift of freewill makes us the deciders of our destiny. Everything we need to exist independent of his minutes interventions he had already provided to us all. This explains why he neither needs our prayers (as obtainable in Nigeria for eg) nor expects our praises.

To reverent him is to do better for ourselves. I try to reverent him through an act's of altruism towards my fellow human beings. Since I feel good when I do good to others and if I do bad also, I feel bad myself, then I need not told by anyone to choose good over evil.

Stop expecting anything from God, instead rely on the provisions he had already made available to solve your needs (by your self or through other human beings). Embrace humanism. I'm for humanism.

I used to sweep and clean the church premises every Saturday with my parents and siblings. Anyone who knows me can attest.

But all these things do not make you a Christian...
I think the challenge in Nigeria is taking being a Christian for granted e.g. being born to church-goer parents and subsequently joining them. I never understood what true Christianity was and what it entailed (a very personal growing walk) until I left Nigeria to live in a country where for you to be a Christian you must have consciously made the choice to become one.

Plus the kind of churches we have in Nigeria these days do not help matters, basically there is no fear of God despite we calling the name God several times.

OK I personally don't see anything wrong with you, we have the liberty to explore as much as we can but I don't know if you have consider the possibility of Satan at work here,if you read the book of Adam and eve you will see the craftiness of Satan at work how he dealt with Adam most of the time thru eve whenever they are at the verge of major breakthrough and deliverance, that old guy has seen something great in you and he is bent on destroying it by playing with your mind.

@OP, there's is God (creator). An unchangeable God couldn't have inspired an old and new testament as evident in the bible. As human beings, we're imperfect manifestation of the perfect God.

Before I go on, I, for one, is tolerant of every human beings, so I hold no ill against religious people. However, I relate with people based on their attractions not even attitudes.

Since it's expected that an action must takes place before a reaction will occurs, then permit me to say that the action in this simple analogy represents the God I know. He's just. And he has no rival. Good and evil are creations of our actions and inaction. A gift of freewill makes us the deciders of our destiny. Everything we need to exist independent of his minutes intervention he had already provided to us all. This explains why he neither needs our prayers (as obtainable in Nigeria for eg) nor expects our praises.

To reverent him is to do better for ourselves. I try to reverent him through an act's of altruism towards my fellows human beings. Since I feel good when I do good to others and if I do bad also, I feel bad myself, then I need not told by anyone to choose good over evil. I am for humanism.

What pray tell is the standard of what God is?. A certain moniker m.iladi writes this same kind of crap.
Falsehood laced in big grammar.

Abeg please don't come and misinform people, Morality and religion(belief in God) are two different things.

If it were the same the likes of Seun, Bill Gates or Mark Zukerberg would have been top serial killers

morality was built from the bible it is the basis of what is good and what is bad. the bible is the very foundation of morality if there isnt God then why try to be good. if we just live and die so we can also do any thing we like.

My mother complained that I have not been to the church for more than two years!

I said to her in a strong Jesus' voice: WOMAN, verily verily I say unto you, in five years from now, no one will be going to any church!

Agnosticism till the end!!!
