VISA APPROVED!
Thanks to all the wonderful guys and ladies here who take time to answer questions and contribute their knowledge for the benefit of other aspiring students. My visa was approved at the Abuja Consulate Office today at 7.30am; it was a sad sight: the amount of denials/delays issued to my fellow Nigerians. I was actually the first approved after up to 20 before me were given yellow papers; I was optimistic and cheerful (I've done my best in preparation and left the rest to God).
When my turn finally came, I was met face-to-face with a VO I had earlier met at a US College Fair held sometime in October this year. When I met him then, he was actually promoting his alma mater(can't remember the school now though). I asked him a simple question:
Why do you guys issue lots of visa denials? He candidly replied me that all an intending student needs to prove is that he is a genuine student:
How many schools did he/she apply to?;
Did he/she take any standardized tests?;
How truthful and clear re the information on his DS-160?
What are his/her long term career plans and how does it fit?;
Can he/she justify the reason why he/she needs to gain this education/degree abroad instead of in his home country?
How can he/she convince me that he/she's coming back after studies?

These are basically the questions that have been asked and answered here a thousand times.

VO: Why are you going to University of Central Missouri?
me: To pursue a MS Degree in Computer Information Systems
VO: Is that the only schools you applied to?
me: I applied to 5 Universities (named them)
VO: Why did you choose UCM?
me: (shortened version) It offered the best fit for my career growth in terms of its curricula content which include software engineering, information security, DBMS, bla bla bla...
VO: What do you currently do?
me: I work as the Confidential Secretary as well as Head of ICT at Federal XYZ..
VO: Have you been outside the country before?
me: No sir, I haven't.
VO: Are you married?
me: Yes sir, with a 9-month old daughter.
VO: Why are they not traveling with you?
me: My wife is currently at work at Federal XYZ; they'll come visit next year during her annual leave; moreover its a two-year program so she can't be granted a two-year leave of absence to join me during my studies.
Then the white paper and the instructions...
No documents (financial/test scores) were requested...
(Funny enough, I knew he recognized me but we both feigned ignorance of that - he was doing his job of course)

Through this journey, I've learned the following:
1. You are tagged an ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT until you convince them otherwise. EVERY SINGLE question asked you proves or disproves this point.
2. You must do your homework: Take standardized tests; rigorously research your schools to ensure they are accredited; Let other experienced people help you enhance your transcript and offer better ideas/angles on how to answer these questions (You need to be GUIDED!); above all, you have to SELL yourself (be bold, be convincing, be well articulated - you don't need to memorize your answers so you don't sound like a robot).
3. Trust and put your faith in God. I met up with a fellow guy (same profile: married with kids) who was unsuccessful after the interview; on conversing with him, his answers were quite articulate, but yet, it didn't fly. I encouraged him to re-apply and work on his ties, as well as how his program can best fit his career progression.

When you've prepared to the best of your abilities, trust God to complete it...even if you fail, do not relent.

Special acknowledgement to mevisbleek, Walspring, sirRiddy as well as texrem, Lagosismyhome, and the host of you who devote your time and resources to help people.... May your wells never run dry!

Sorry for the long epistle; its just my little way of giving back to the community from which I have gained so much.

Congratulations bro, God will bless your new journey. Welcome to America!

Hello Guys,

Kindly weigh in on my situation here. I've been a silent reader on this thread and other travel threads as well. I must admit that there's a wealth of information buried in this section. Thanks to all those who have contributed to this.

Here's my situation:

I'm interested in pursuing a Masters degree in the US. I actually refused to do this in Nigeria since cos I've always wanted to experience education outside Nigeria. I strongly feel the time is right for me to do so now.

I'm in my late 20s with over 4 years work experience in communications. I have my degree in English Language with a 2.2 GPA coupled with additional qualifications in PR and Advertising.

I've contacted a couple of schools who are willing to offer me admission. University of Southern Mississippi is willing to offer me a provisional admission (in Public Relations & Advertising which is where my passion lies) and I have to take GRE due to my CGPA. The other, Southern New Hampshire University offers me MBA (which is less relevant to my career in my opinion) does not require GRE or any other additional tests.

My dilemma is not being able to settle for one due to some circumstances. I have friends in SNHU and are encouraging me to come over, saying admission process is relatively easy there. USM however offers me what I need albeit with a little stress. Whichever I choose though, I have no problem defending my choice of program at the visa interview but I'd want to avoid needless grilling by the VO as much as possible.

The other dilemma is sponsor. I don't quite understand how the statement of account thing works. I have a maternal Uncle who's willing to sponsor but we don't share the same surname. I'm aware this may raise concerns at the visa interview so I'm not too keen on it. I intend to save up a large chunk of my salary for the program.

1. Is it advisable to present such savings account where money is solely lodged for the program? Will it be considered cash lodgement?
2. Do I have to back it up with a sponsor's account?
3. Can I have my Uncle run transactions through my account to enable me build up credibility?
4. Or do I just go with him as sponsor, even as an adult with 4 years work experience and earning a comfortable salary?
5. If I go with his sponsorship, do I still have to present my own statement?
6. If I settle for the MBA, can I change my course and school when I arrive US?

NB: I currently hold a B1/B2 visa and recently returned from a 3 weeks vacation in the US

I await your kind responses

Thanks

Thanks you so much for this secret. However, it appears most of these profs seek for PhD student only ....will I ever find such opportunity for MS student? Anyways, I will use this format n keep searching till something comes out.
Once again, thank u, I so appreciate ur suggestion n assistance.
Also, is it also good to contact grad program coordinators who are not openly seeking for RA/GA students privately via email? If yes, please what's the format of such email?

Yes Boss!!!
Some profs require MSc too.
Pls try and contact younger Profs( who finished PhD frim 2015y) they seem friendly and answer mails faster!!!.
Most if them are just tryi g to start up a Lab.
But finally na God sure pass..
Best of luck

This is it:

Let's assume you keep your money with me, you had 7332 with me (opening), you then kept another 7.25m with me during the course of the period (credit) leaving all you have with me to be (7.25m + 7332).Thereafter you needed your money and collected 7250208 (debit). So what you'll have left with me 7124 (closing balance).

Basically the 7.25m went in and out with an extra 208 leaving your closing balance lesser than the opening balance by that 208.

Me in this case is your bank.

Teedawg:
can someone shed some light on this bank statement
currency NGN
opening balance : 7,332.23
Total debit: 7,250,208.07
Total credit: 7,250,000.00
closing balance: 7,124.16
period: 11/11/2014 To 30/09/2016
....details of transaction
what does this mean

Hello Everyone,

I just received an admission to study for a Masters programme in the USA. I have received half-funding from the school through the Professor that will supervise my research and I am looking for another 28000 dollars to present as proof. So I want to ask a few questions

What do you guys think of using my family friend who has a company s as my sponsor using his company account or private account?

I have an Uncle in the USA who earns not more than 7000 dollars a month. Do you think the guy can stand in as a sponsor for me?

Lastly, can I use the account balance of my parents business accounts in applying for the visa?

Lastly, una sabi guys weh go help me run the sponsorship matter?

Thanks.
