Thanks. Baba I dey envy your profile o. I've already accepted the kfupm offer but waiting to see if I can get a better one. grin Yeah, it's university of Utah and I realised we applied to the same schools when you posted about it. But since you can't go to all 3 schools at once, I'll gladly accept anyone you reject. Our prayer is to get admission and funding, that's all that matters.

Humble guy and I think you completed your apps before me. Abeg, reject any one you don't want sharp sharp so it won't affect my own decision. grin

Thank you very much, Imperial is first choice if funding shows up.

Imperial is highly rated but I don't know if they would offer you an MSc or MEng. That's the first issue because without the former, transitioning into a PhD would be harder in the USA. Secondly, it is mega expensive even with PTDF. I think the tuition is like £26,000 (plus living expenses in London are out of this world). I don't know if PTDF can still fund it with this current exchange rate. Thirdly, life in UK post-schooling and job prospects. I dey see plenty imperial people hustling for "crumbs" in Nigeria. So make rating no too motivate you. A lot of those ratings are heavily dependent on politics, endowment size and quality of past research work. But if you can get it on a full-ride then enjoy.

This is not funny at all sha. How much be the exam sef? How I wan take start. I applied to a just single school and MUST get it.....any which way!!!
Where all them good peeps here. Practical advice needed URGENTLY.

45k with B.Y MAFIT. The issue now is available dates. For him to ask for it it means they might need a particular section from it to aid their decision-making. Challenging them to waive it for you might be counter-productive. Instead ask them to be considerate with time while you search for a suitable date.

TAMU, college station. University of Arkansas funds but have a high speaking requirement of 26 for TA. Looking out for RA. The last two are safe schools. If I get into masters with funding, then can "port" into higher ranked school for a Ph.D. after. Kai, OSU admission, that one is faith based. grin

College station is another biggie. That S-26 is overrated. You had 24 what's the difference? Yea, I understand @ port and funding.

Let me join my faith with you for Texas A&M and OSU grin

@bolded. The department of Mathematics, BGSU is quite generous with funding for MSc students. I know someone who had a 2.2 with low GRE and toefl score who got admitted with full funding and monthly stipends last year.
I also got admitted to their Computer Science dept (MSc) for Fall 2017 and I'm expecting a +ve funding decision soon.
You have a good profile. Hopefully, you'll get a positive response from them soon.

Chief, I plan to apply to KFUPM for fall admission too. Could you please put me through the process?
It's not something hard, when they announce application, all you have to do is to fill the online application, you'll need 3 people to provide recommendation for you. You can submit your application with or without your test scores. You also have to upload transcript.
You can also apply to, KAUST, they have better funding package but more selective than kfupm. All the best with your application.

Earliest available date might be in mid March.

I wonder why they did a sudden about-turn, pushing for a waiver might get you accepted but kill every possibility of being funded.
Not just yet. I will scale through with or without it.

The quality of their education and the individual candidate taking the test. The data doesn't also provide spread of the distribution. I'm sure over ten times more Nigerians take the test compared to candidates from those tiny Scandinavian countries.
Also note that Dutch candidates score higher than native English speakers, why is that?

sirRiddy:

There is no inferiority complex, aunty. I am proud of my accent
You have totally misconstrued me unfortunately. I have tried to explain my point to you but you seem not to get it. Never said other non native speakers don't have accents. My initial assertion was that it is harder for us to score the 26 in the speaking section because of our accent which is reality. All these your irrelevant points about Italian is what I don't get. I am sorry you don't get humor and took it too seriously.

PS: look at the statistical report from ets on speaking. Look at sweden, norway and denmark. There is a marked difference from yoruba and igbo even though they are all non native speakers. What would you ascribe to this?

KFUPMS normally opens application every February and October every year. You should be checking their website anytime from now. KAUST is King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. Unfortunately, application just closed this past January but another application should be open around May/June or so. It's one of the highly rated university in the Arab world and it provides funding in the range of 20k to 30k USD. It's a research intensive school with state-of-the-art facilities.

LSU applicant here.
So far so good, I've gotten admission into King Fahd University of Petroleum and Mineral Studies (MSc in Chemical Engineering) with full sponsorship and Imperial College, London (MSc in Petroleum Engineering) no funding whatsoever, hoping on PTDF scholarship. I applied to LSU, KSU, Utah, Notre Dam. I just got a rejection email this morning from Notre Dam. I applied for PhD program in all USA schools as funding is most important. My profile: Bsc chemical Engineering, GPA 4.58 (3.74 WES conversion), toefl 98 and GRE 312.

Choi!!!! This guy!!!!
I just open mouth as I dey read una profiles shocked ....
I think we should have LSU Applicant Association of Nigeria (LAAN) grin grin
KFUPM is a nice school, but I heard they admit mostly Muslim, applicants from other religion have very slim chance of getting in. They even have questionnaire on d religion thingy in their online application. Perhaps, u are a moslem brother...... I once applied to d school but the lecturer who was supposed to submit a recommendation letter for my application didn't meet up with their deadline, so my application was eventually not reviewed. I will still give it a shot again...

In addition to d schools mentioned earlier. I also applied to:
University of Arkansas
TAMUK (During my application, I contacted a prof who's doing research in my area of interest. After some email exchanges, he asked me mention his name in my application material as my potential advisor. I believe things will evetually work out fine)
Ohio University
U of Louisiana Lafayette
Wichita State Uni
Wayne State Uni.

San Diego State Uni (though they are still on my neck for my official transcript and degree certificate from my school. Fee days ago, I got an email from d Administrative Asst of d dept relaying a well packaged info from d Grad Coordinator (I initially thought it was admission decision). When I opened d attachment in d email, I was pissed with d content. It was just a letter from d grad coord informing me that my application isn't complete. Though they asked me to forward my SOP and LOR to d dept. I responded to d email explaining d challenges associated with sending my transcript to them, n d grad coord reverted saying that he perfectly understand my frustration, but that d grad school do not permit them to evaluate profile without official transcript......I just tire for d school

The speaking requirement for GA in university of Arkansas is quite high (ie, 26). I was surprised when the school contacted me saying that they use WAEC result for applicants from Nigeria...... Did any UArk applicant get that? I wrote d TOEFL test though

Thank God these great men here with stellar profile aren't applying to d same program as me.....they are mostly 'War heads', so I still get hope with my weak profile.... cheesy grin

My guy said 3.583. Why not 3.583388946 lol.

Answering this question is difficult because overall it is just there. Just there, meaning above average but not stellar. Do not be crestfallen however. Several things go into GPAs.

1. Your final 2 years in which you did core courses.
2. General improvement in the GPA from year 1- final.
3. Consistency
4. Core courses related to the PhD or MSc you are considering.

For instance, someone with a 3.5 who hopes to do some research in Interfacial Fluid Mechanics and got As in Transport Phenomena and Basic fluid mechanics courses while in Undegrad may appear to have a better transcript than a 4-Pter who perhaps got Cs there. Also, someone who had say 1.5 from years 1-3 but had 5.0 in 4 & 5 (thus landing on a 3.5) may appeal more to the evaluation committee than someone who blitzed through year 1-3 and wobbled at the final 2 years thus landing at 4.0. As you can see, a lot of things go into it that's why higher GPAs seem to be favored (as it guarantees more As in core courses than other wise).

I feel the need to add at this juncture that other parts of one's application could be the deciding factor even ahead of a GPA. If a renowned Prof in your field recommends you to a school whose committee members are well-known to him, his LOR would be weightier than an unknown Prof saying you are the best thing since sliced bread. Additionally, having cognate research experience like publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals and making presentations in conferences appear to be the best bet towards gaining admission into graduate school.

In a nutshell, don't bother about the GPA as you cannot change it (even if it is not bad). Just work on the other aspects of your application.
@ bolded grin grin.....d guy want d maximum possible approximation na.
Comment on point boss!!!! As usual.... wink

PhD students have some sure funding but ms guys usually have a stiffer competition. Some ms students here who had funding in other departments last semester got teaching assistantships this semester. I think at this point, his profile and luck would be the best bet. Another thing is to start going through other departments site for those who need RAs especially the agricultural departments. Those places have more positions than people usually. The downside is that you still have to pay in state tuition.
@bolded. I never knew it's possible to secure RA position in a department different from d applicant's intending dept cool. Does this apply to incoming graduate students too?

Good morning friends...
For those interested in PhD Statistics, pls check this out:

http://scholarship-positions.com/phd-scholarship-statistics-university-wollongong-australia/2017/02/01/
The deadline is 1st March, 2017

There is also Australian Academy of Science Doctoral Fellowship at 37,000 Euros per year (tax inclusive) for all disciplines
http://scholarship-positions.com/austrian-academy-of-sciences-doctoral-fellowship-programme/2016/02/02/
Deadline is September 15th, 2017

Pls I'd like the house to clarify me on this:
The education consulting firm that registered me for GRE indicated "Small Business Operations" as Intended Graduate Major rather than the Mathematics and Statistics I gave them when I furnished them with my info for registration. Could this have any bearing on my applications?
I had ignored it all along but its recently occurring to me as an aberration.
Thank you

Toefl: 106 R28 L26 S26 W26

I must have missed where you later stated your score. How long did it take from date exam was taken to receipt of score? Was your score improved by taking the paper test?

Oh sorry I didnt state my scores earlier, the scores were Q153 V159 AWA 4.5
- it took almost four weeks from the date of my exams to receive the scores

- From my experience i'll say it doesnt even make sense to write the paper test except you're uncomfortable with computers. Let me explain, the questions were very easy but after scaling and equating with other test takers my scores came out lower than expected...to get very high scores on the paper test, you have to answer the questions almost perfectly, whereas for the computer test, its computer adaptive so if you do fairly well in the easy section and the harder section that comes up next your scores will be quite high.
