Well I can't say why but I can tell you for SURE that Etisalat posted losses for the last 3 or 4 consecutive years. It's privately owned so these figures are not in the public domain. The troubling thing however is that the losses were increasing considerably y-o-y. If the losses were coming down, it would have made a lil more sense to me cos there's a period required to break even after a business starts...Anyway that's it
Oga you just reminded of STARCOMMS and Multilinks, that was how the Directors busy were diverting the funds and posting losses until they go under.

I still have that yeye STARCOMMS in my portfolio today.

Most Nigerian CEO'S can rival the devil in wickedness. They are like our politicians with dead conscience. We would see things more clearly as the days go bye.

From experience with CDMA coys, Banks don't have that expertise.

But nobody can tell me ETISALAT or Telecoms companies don't make profits, most of their incomes are usually diverted .

Ernest Ndukwe tried enforcing corporate governance when he was the NCC EVC.

The same man is a director in Access Bank. Ironic

Managing a company is actually not as easy as people outside think.
I am not suprised that etisalat is running at a loss as they came to the party very late. Other telecos have had their own difficult time too in the past.
From where i stand, the whole story is not good for anybody not even acess bank that is taking the company over.

Etisalat has been a bit wasteful.
This is my personal opinion and it is not the reason for their present presence in a pit.

What will you say about AIRTEL that took-out over a struggling ECONET(VODACOM, ZAIN)

ETISALAT even got more subscribers than ECONET(VODACOM, ZAIN) before AIRTEL came in.

It's just mismanagement.

MARKET IS DEFINITELY SICK
For couple of weeks NSE ASI has been on a very impressive rally, causing more stocks to create new 52 week high every single day! However, recently, as the market price is rising, momentum is falling. short term breadth indicators (AD line, McClellan Oscillators) are drastically falling. Technically, this indicates that the market is not healthy.

To be healthy, market price and momentum needs to align. Either market price will swallow its pride and go to meet momentum (meaning market pullbacks) or momentum goto meet price on its "mountainous castle" (price continue to rally).

My opinion is that greed (sentiment) will push the market price above 2 year high at around 35,770 before there can be any pullback (if there will be any at all) in coming days.

this was what i perceive (though i cldnt explain it technically as u just did) when i asked yday if the 4th corrective impulse wave has begun

the increase in ASI for d past few days (3 - 4 trading days) had been largely due to last minute minute (2.00pm upward) gain in the stock of big cap (e.g Dangote and NB in particular) while overall market had been flat at best and in some cases even a decline.

i think for dis reason the second options (i.e pullback) is more likely however the big cap stock might still pull the usual last minute stunt for some few more days to get to the mark u mentioned (35770) before the pull back begins.

- The head is finally off the body. I cant shout.
- This Etisalat will make Access shareholders smile in the long run.
-Loans are not designed to make borrowers rich , ESPECIALLY by Access bank. A loan from Access is like a guaranteed Cardiac Arrest certificate.
Those who borrowed from access in the past are feeling me. Wigwe no dey hear stories... grin
There are a couple of other banks involved. In fact, the indebtedness to GTB is higher. Also there are laws governing loan recovery. The extent they can go is loan recovery......nothing more. Profit is not the end game. However, assets could be sold to cronies to recover funds. I don't think the regulators will allow a total collapse of the telco. Not good for the industry.

THE DIFFERENT STAGES OF THE MARKET

Dow Theory suggests the markets are made up of three distinct phases, which are self repeating. These are called the Accumulation phase, the Mark up phase, and the Distribution phase.
The Accumulation phase usually occurs right afer a steep sell off in the market. The steep sell off in the markets would have frustrated many market participants, losing hope of any sort of up- trend in prices. The stock prices would have plummeted to rock bottom valuations, but the buy- ers would still be hesitant of buying fearing there could be another sell off. Hence the stock price languishes at low levels. This is when the ‘Smart Money’ enters the market.
Smart money is usually the institutional investors who invest from a long term perspective. They invariably seek value investments which is available afer a steep sell off. Institutional investors start to acquire shares regularly, in large quantities over an extended period of time. This is what makes up an accumulation phase. This also means that the sellers who are trying to sell during the accumulation phase will easily find buyers, and therefore the prices do not decline further. Hence invariably the accumulation phase marks the bottom of the markets. More ofen than not, this is how the support levels are created. Accumulation phase can last up to several months.
Once the institutional investors (smart money) absorb all the available stocks, short term traders sense the occurrence of a support. This usually coincides with improved business sentiment. These factors tend to take the stock price higher. This is called the mark up phase. During the Mark up phase, the stock price rallies quickly and sharply. The most important feature of the mark up phase is the speed. Because the rally is quick, the public at large is lef out of the rally.
New investors are mesmerized by the return and everyone from the analysts to the public see higher levels ahead.
Finally when the stock price reaches new highs (52 week high, all time high) everyone around would be talking about the stock market. The news reports turn optimistic, business environ- ment suddenly appears vibrant, and everyone one (public) wants to invest in the markets. The public by and large, wants to get involved in the markets as there is a positive sentiment. This is when the distribution phase occurs.
The judicious investors (smart investors) who got in early (during the accumulation phase) will start offloading their shares slowly. The public will absorb all the volumes off loaded by the insti- tutional investors (smart money) there by giving them the well needed price support. The distri- bution phase has similar price properties as that of the accumulation phase. In the distribution phase, whenever the prices attempt to go higher, the smart money off loads their holdings. Over a period of time this action repeats several times and thus the resistance level is created.
Finally when the institutional investors (smart money) completely sell off their holdings, there would no further support for prices, and hence what follows afer the distribution phase is a com- plete sell off in the markets, also known as the mark down of prices. The selloff in the market leaves the public in an utter state of frustration.
Completing the circle, what follows the selloff phase is a fresh round of accumulation phase, and the whole cycle repeats again. It is believed that that entire cycle from accumulation phase to the selloff spans over a few years. It is important to note that no two market cycles are the same.

Anybody who has been in this market long enough would recognise this.

It is real. However it is difficult.to say what stage this exactly is.
...let's try to see if we can determine where we are in the market. Ask yourself the followings:

- The Accumulation phase usually occurs right after a steep sell off in the market. Is the market selling off now for Smart monies to accumulate? NO

- During the Mark up phase, the stock price rallies quickly and sharply. Has market rallied sharply? YES

- Finally when the stock price reaches new highs (52 week high, all time high) everyone around would be talking about the stock market. Has market reached its 52 week high? YES.

So distribution is ongoing. During this period, momentum and trends usually do not match - i.e distribution "opposite" of accumulation
