If you are an Igbo man born before 1967, then you would understand. History needs to be brought back to our schools sha.

Build it in the city especially in ur state capital where you have 100% right to talk without being labeled "non indigene". Besides, Nigeria get k-leg now a drastic change is eminent but no one can actually tell the direction of that change.

Mostly the mistake made by Some of our parents,
we just have to learn from them and not blame them.

Your Building can become an investment Or a liability, Choosing wisely the former especially at a young age.

Build in the city as a form of investment, rent out and let the income generated over time be partly used to be your residential home In the villa.

It becomes a Win win.

I must confess I dont know the section to post this. But I have a serious question I must ask.
Is it necessary to have a house in the village when you spend most of your life outside the village? My uncles hardly visit their mansions in the village. Other people are just occupying the property. They only come back once in a blue moon. They can just breeze in and breeze out tomorrow.
My question now is, is it not better to have that mansion in the city, than rent an apartment in the city. You are a tenant in the city in one poor make-shift house, but own a duplex in the village that is empty. Is it even economically wise? It baffles logic and common sense. Dont give me that shity excuse about Home town and burial.

Don't blame your uncle. I guess he is Igbo. After the civil war, we learnt that Nigeria is not one. We lost property we had in cities (abandoned property) especially buildings. So it is a survival instinct to build a house in village so that whenever crisis occurs or is about to happen (you saw what happened during 2015 election; the quit notice give to Igbo in the north; vote for ambode or be drown in the lagoon... stuffs like that), They have a safety net.

It is a survival instinct. Ask you papa the meaning of Aku-ru-ulo

Why not ask your uncles their reasons. People do things for different reasons.
As for me, I hope to have a house in my hometown but my first house, here where I hustle.

If you are an igbo, build it in your village. If you do not, someday, you will abandon that house in lagos to your village due to one bruhaha or the other. Mind you that before the bruhaha will end, someone must have parked in. Be wise my brother, one nigeria will never favour you.

OP this is very true. Some persons have houses in the village while they rot in the city.I have heard of some people living on rented apartments while they have mansions scattered around the city. Some will even die on their wretched rented apartment. Then they will bury him/her in the beautiful mansion

I also don't like that idea, I'll rather build my mansion Where I live. Mansion is for me to live in not for me to be buried in.

It is a matter of 'Value'. One place more value on having a house in the village even of he has to pay someone to inhabit and take care of it while he pays heavy rent in the city where he lives and work than spending equivalent amount to build in the city therefore saving himself rent and the intangible benefits of living in your own house.
For me, I never considered it wise to put a house that i will visit only occasionally (once or twice) a year while i pay heavy rent in the town/city i live.
Am not competing woth anyone in the villa nor will i try to impress anyone

I have always pointed this same thing to everyone who cares to listen. It's a very insane idea. Living in a rented apartment in the city and having so many rooms vacant in ur duplex at the village. And it's saddening that igbos do this a lot. They believe building a house in the village is a big accomplishment. The money I will use to build a duplex in the village which I know is a once in a while abode, I will use it and do so many landed property investments in the city

He must be Igbo I guess.

My sister, during the war when Ndigbo returned in droves to their villages, some did not have a place of their own to lay their heads despite having mansions in the cities. After the war, a lit of those properties in the cities were lost to the indigenous of those cities who claimed them as abandoned properties.

Since after the war, the average Igbo man makes sure they build their first house in their village so that if something happens, they know they won't lose it and also have a place to run back to.
