Although am a Muslim, but actions are judged according to intentions and as long as you give for the sake of God it does not matter who you give it to, it all the same rewards. Just give you alms to those who need it even if it's your family member it must not necessarily be to the church or mosque

It was a very stressful week for me as it involved lots of travels and all. So its a Saturday and I was paid for a project I did for the month past.

Going by my tired nature, I knew deep down me that there was no way I could have made it to church the next day and I was hell bent on paying my tithe because of the inherent blessings therein and the last thing on my mind would be to give it to my nebor to pay it for me. (The guy broke and besides I didn't want him to start calculating my take-home (Na sharp man). And I knew deep down that if I keep the money till the next time I would be in church, I was sure I would spend it. (God have mercy on me sha)

So I decided even before getting home to package my tithe and while in the market on a shopping spree I package my tithe and dropped it in the plate of an old beggar. (A mulsim beggar precisely)

Instantly, I saw 50 shades of shocks on her face as she looked at me for a few seconds and I could read her facials more like "For this Buharia?" Lols. And before I disappeared into the crowd, I could see/read her lips mutter prayers pointing towards me. And deep down, I felt blessed and fulfilled.

But was I wrong to have given my 10percent to a beggar instead of to the alter?

Opinions please.

You did the right thing. Pls lets read more about tithe in Deuteronomy 14:22-29 especially verse 29. It's not a MUST u pay tithe to Pastors. B4 anybody attacks me, read the quotation above first.

Giving, sowing a seed and tithing are three different things.

You just gave to the poor bro...which God will reward u greatly, but you've not paid your tithe.

Even paying ur tithe in another church and to another priest is also wrong....it should be paid to your priest cus he's the one that God uses to bless you through his word.

Wrong.

It is written clearly, Bring your tithe into my store house, so that it may be food in my house. No begger is Gods storehouse.
Obey instruction if you want to pay your tithe.

Giving is good but a paracetamol cannot do the work of an aspirin. You will get the reward for giving and not tithing.

Give, and it will give given unto you. That will be your reward
And will cast out the devourer and the canker-worm will not eat your crops, You missed that bro.

You will probably be given for giving but the canker-worms will eat it.

Deuteronomy 14:22. "You shall truly tithe all the increase of your grain that the field produces year by year.
23. And you shall eat before the LORD your God, in the place where He chooses to make His name abide, the tithe of your grain and your new wine and your oil, of the firstborn of your herds and your flocks, that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always.
24. But if the journey is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry the tithe, or if the place where the LORD your God chooses to put His name is too far from you, when the LORD your God has blessed you,
25. then you shall exchange it for money, take the money in your hand, and go to the place which the LORD your God chooses.
26. And you shall spend that money for whatever your heart desires: for oxen or sheep, for wine or similar drink, for whatever your heart desires; you shall eat there before the LORD your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your household.
27. You shall not forsake the Levite who is within your gates, for he has no part nor inheritance with you.
28. "At the end of every third year you shall bring out the tithe of your produce of that year and store it up within your gates.
29. And the Levite, because he has no portion nor inheritance with you, and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow who are within your gates, may come and eat and be satisfied, that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.

Your tithe your choice. I would hand it to beggers or those that needs it than an established organisation that keep enriching theirselves.

You did very well, beside Jesus Christ didn't talk about giving tithes, He only mentioned offerings.

Point of correction here, your Tithe is never GOD's SHARE of your Money. God created all things and gave us part of them to administer on. It is very funny how people over flog this issue of Tithe. If you want to live under the Law, good or under the Grace, good as well.
Mind you, can you withstand being judged according to the Laws?

Why did u give it to a beggar? As in what pushed you? Cos that gesture is uncommon to you ( deduced from ur write up). Why?

Dear op, you felt fulfilled but have you fulfilled God's wish?
God clearly states that we bring all the tithes and offerings into His store house!
but then let me also ask you this, must you give the beggar God's 10%?
why not from your own 90% bro?

It might be nonsense but just ponder on it it sir...

You gave money and not tithe to the beggar. Nobody asked you to give 'tithe' to beggars. It is not biblical therefore, not right.

Yes you are wrong. The scriptures explicitly says that you should bring your tithes, "into God's storehouse so that there may be food there". In the old testament (pre-church era) Abraham offered a tithe to ''God's messenger...God's servant".

So one of few things: Tithes are given to specific people for specific reasons. That is why they have a value attached to them and are mandatory. God uses it for 'food in his house'.... to keep His house running.

Thus I cannot see how giving it to a beggar does that except you are specifically instructed by the Spirit of God and is most unlikely because the Spirit and the Word are one.

Well I don't see anything wrong in what the OP has done. Indeed there's no feeling like giving to someone in dire need of something. That act alone is self rewarding. Perhaps it's the best option, because it removes every doubt in the mind compared to when paying tithe in the church; that's the point where questions and uncertainties begin to arise - "How do I know the pastor won't spend it on himself?" "How am I sure I'd even get a reward?"..

Moreover the talk on tithe being used for "propagation of the gospel" doesn't even seen right. I don't understand why huge sums of money (realised from the collection of the tithe) should be used for propagation of the Gospel.
