Hello House. I just stopped by to check after a long while.

I must say again, this platform was very helpful to me prior to my journey to Houston and during my stay there early this year.
I had my babies in Houston late April smiley Though I had them earlier than planned (was directed to the theater during a weekly routine doctor’s follow-up), I had a safe delivery, they were healthy babies, and every subsequent documentation turned out to be a smooth process. I came back home almost a month later, it was one of the happiest days of my life lol, I never appreciated being home that much haha! I missed home. In all, I had a very pleasant experience with my doctor and the hospital back in Houston. Transportation was a tad bit of a challenge as for some reason I couldn’t use my Nigerian dollar card for uber which seemed to be the most popular way to get around town. Unlike other places I had been to, the transport system in Houston wasn’t too friendly (and expensive).

Honestly they aren't, I know 2 people personally with ALL thier receipts.... One had given birth to 3 boys in the same America, the other one this is her 2nd child, both denied. If you have a visa or recently renew in this day and age thank God. It's nothing to take for granted.

I'm sorry but no airline would let you carry on 2 infants with one adult. It's an aviation rule so applies to all carriers. So you'll have to attach the second infant to another adults ticket as an infant in arms. Or pay for an infant seat. Either way in arms or on a seat each infant needs an adult.

thank you

Hi @olukemiyemi pls when you had your 1st baby @Virginia, how long did it take to get birth cert, SSN and U.S passport.
I'm currently in Virginia, awaiting baby's arrival. Did a little research and found out expedited birth cert and passport here takes 2-3 weeks min for each. ie 4-6wks after delivery! Any advice?
All Virginia mums pls help! I only planned 3wks stay after delivery

Hi I’m a newbie in the house, I’m also looking to get accommodation in Houston for early next year. Also haven’t had much luck with Airbnb and google searches turned quite expensive. Please I’m interested if you find any info that might help or if you be willing to share an apartment.

Virginia is a bit slow when it comes to getting the BC. My daughter was born on the 14th and we received the BC on the 30th. But we made a lot of calls and submitted our application early at the hospital. Keep on calling the records office and keep praying!
Re: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedures Part 5 by Fyorgyn: 7:43pm On Nov 02, 2017

My husband and I applied for renewal via dropbox and got the dreaded mail asking us to collect our passports and schedule an interview.

Previous Visa
Location: Lagos
Purpose of travel: Business
Year issued:2015

Current application
Location: Abuja
Purpose of travel: Business

Na so we go our interview today. I gathered my "burden of proof" (thank you Zoemummy for your very detailed checklist) in a folder- very neatly arranged and labelled smiley The interview was quite long and honestly nerve-racking.

VO: Please pass your passports
VO: What is your relationship?
DH: We are married
VO: How long have you been married?
DH: 2years+

VO looks into her computer and types for a while then looks at us and goes "What of your child?"

In my mind I am like "Madam, I know where you are going- no worry"

Me: He is a US citizen and does not need a visa (Let the drilling begin!!!)
VO: How many times have you gone to the US and how long did you spend?
Me: Twice. Spent a week the first time and
VO: You gave birth in your second trip
Me: Yes

VO: How much did it cost you?
Me: About $15k in all (I had an excel sheet with my actual spend. I had done it to compare our proposed and actual spend in the US after we came back. This $15k included accommodation in US, flight tickets for DH and I)
VO: Do you have proof of this?
Me: Yes!

I reached into my neatly arranged folder, brought out the financial excel sheet and all my receipts. I handed over the excel sheet to her. She glanced through and asked for the receipts.

VO: How much exactly did the hospital charge
Me: $3000 and the Doctor charges were about $1500
VO: Do you have an ITEMIZED BILL?

At this point eh, my heart started beating so loudly, I could swear everyone could hear it!

Me: I was not given an itemized bill. These are all the receipts I was given
VO: No, All hospitals give itemized bills. Did you give birth in a Hospital?
Me: Yes, I gave birth at St.Francis Medical Centre
VO: All hospitals give itemized bills

hian- at this point eh, e be like say the heart wan comot from the chest...lol
Me: That is all I was given
VO: Did you mention at your last interview that you will be giving birth in the US?
Me: I was not pregnant at the time. I got pregnant way after that interview
VO: When was your child born
Me: He is not even one yet. (I told her the date)

She checked her system- maybe to calculate if I was saying the truth about not being pregnant at the time of interview. She started typing and typing and typing....

VO turns to my DH: What do you do? and What do you earn
DH told her

VO back to me: Where do you work
Me: told her. (it is a very well known organisation)
VO: What is your background
Me: I told her (I guess she asked my background because you would not think people in my profession would work in my organisation)

Aunty continued typing and typing.

VO: Are you pregnant?
Me: No
VO: Will you be going for medical care in the US
Me and DH: At least not now

VO: what are you going to do in the US
Me: I will be attending the xyz conference (the same conference i got the visa for)

another round of typing

She takes my passport and flips through it (I really am quite the traveller)

VO: What did you go to do in Tanzania?
Me: Presented a paper at a conference there
VO: What city
Me: told her

Type type type

VO: I will be approving your visas but I have made a NOTE HERE THAT YOU CANNOT USE THIS VISA TO ACCESS MEDICAL CARE IN THE US

Me: Thank you.

Lucky you.

Its now tough renewing.

All expectant mums are given itemized bill, that is the breakdown of medical bill like CS bill, doctor bill, paedetrician, lab, scan, circumcision, hearing test and so on, all that is required to be paid is itemised one after the other and they are paid separately.

Some hospital will give zero balance after payment on each bill.

Just to note about so so amount sound somehow to the VO, good to state an amount spent instead of about so so dollars.

The forum is not what it was, silent observer like me read from part 1 when they state amount, hospitals, accommodation, affordable paedetrician, stores to buy things, type of diaper, powder, cream to use and stroller, now nothing of the sort.

Thank God we still have our jotters to visit, babies wont allow us active to do backward review on the forum.

Its well.

Time to gird our loins.

To think I renewed last month so seamlessly after Baby Anon 2.

From spending at least 10k to calling for interview.

We will make a way.

Sis! @Fyorgyn..... I am saying "Mogbe!!!!" on your behalf here!!! Oga ju....what a nerve racking experience.....congrats though.

I'm sure the opponents of change of intent letter will say "eh hen have you seen what happens at visa renewal now!!".

If I merge this your experience with @Supernaturalone's some pages ago on Oct 30...it seems the conclusion of the whole matter is that when you get B1/B2 for business or holiday and later find out maybe months or a year later that you are preggie just jejelly reapply for a new visa specifically for birthing (which is being super strict since B1/B2 covers everything from business to medical!!! tongue).

At @Supernaturalone's interview she was given permission to use her current visa but at least her new intent is on record. Using B1/B2 for birthing when it was originally for for business or holiday..... you may still get through POE but renewal may not be a piece of cake.

Also it seems VO don't like hospital discounts...what to do? I wonder if discounts are assumed to be a form of aid. Are we missing something?
Re: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedures Part 5 by dere5: 4:56am On Nov 03, 2017
From what I've been reading here for some days now,VO's are really very strict these days o,ki lo de?
I think the question that should be addressed now is whether if discounts given to cash paying patients is illegal? Because e be like say the thing dey vex dem no be small o,as it's quite obvious they frown at it these days. It seems they expect us to be paying like $15k for hospital & Dr alone. Abeg where that kine money dey, just to go born pikin?

Renewal in Abuja has been so strict of recent don't know If it so in Lagos.
For itemised bill when I had my baby in maryland the bill Sent to me showed a the cost which I am to pay so I decided to go to hospital to pay and a detailed breakdown of what the bill covers (test done in hospital, admission fee, pain killer I took, delivery fee et al) the various costs was stated which sum to the earlier bill I received it was detailed both for I and my daughter and after payment it was still printed same way with my balance been zero. Don't really know if that is what they mean as itemised bill though. Someone with an Idea should clarify pls.

Well for those using Lagos route let's know what the feeling over there is as for abj it can be safely concluded that you need God's special grace during renewal or even when applying.

abujaniv:

Some states have special, tax-funded healthcare programs for non-insured residents of the state. If you are a tourist in the US, you are necessarily not a resident of any US state. Hospitals and birth certificate authorities may take you on your honor if you declare local residency, but doing so may impact your credibility in the future as an applicant for a non-immigrant visa.

There are, unfortunately, some unscrupulous healthcare operators that may quote unusually low fees for medical care, only to send the balance of the bill to Medicaid.

Consular officers have ample experience looking at medical statements and receipts, and we have our own experiences with the US medical system to draw upon. So we know approximately what a range of procedures cost. Prospective applicants for medical tourism should do ample research and be suspicious of quotes that are unusually low.

The bolded, I think, is the reason why VOs are NOT smiling.

Apparently some inadvertently use the government funds we set out to avoid. Sadly, I don't think there is anyway we can find out which hospitals do this.

It's a "win-win" for the hospitals but bad market for the government and the VOs are government officials!

They may have already blacklisted some of the popular hospitals we use which might explain the high rate of rejection for both renewal and birthing visas.

Chirolechick:
You're welcome......just let me know how it went

Hello Chirolechick,

Thank you so much for your help. Visa was approved and has been collected.

I applied for the emergency request/ expedited interview date as advised, selected medical emergency option. Explained my reasons for the emergency request. Attached copy of my hubby's visa, dr's letter and correspondence and some other work related doc to prove why I needed to have the interview that week, as I was going out of town also as the available interview date was way past when I could travel per most airlines policies and my already scheduled Dr's appointment.

I got a response in less than 24 hrs that my request had been approved.

Chose my preferred interview date. Didn't need to pay another visa fee.

Interview day:
VO: Where in the US are you going to?
Me: Houston Texas
VO: Why?
Me: To have my baby ( I applied for medical Visa)
VO: Is this your first baby?
Me: Yes
VO: What's your budget?
Me: USD xxxx
VO: Where do you work
Me: Just started at XYZ Company, formerly at ABC Company ( Had to state this Cus I changed the name of employer on my new form as my employer when I was initially scheduled for my interview had changed)
VO: what did you do at ABC Company?
Me: I blah blah blah
VO: Is your new role in XYZ Company similar to ABC?
Me: Explained the correlation (Although I doubt that's very important)
VO: Is your hubby going with you and Does your Hubby have a Visa?
Me: Yes to both questions
VO: Family and Friends
Me: No
VO: So staying at a hotel
Me: Yes
VO: When do you intend travelling?
Me: Blah blah
VO: How long do you intend staying
Me: X months Cus I only have X no of months approved as time off work.
VO: Okay, Your Visa has been approved.
Me: Thank you.

Hubby helped pick up cus I had to head back out.

In all I say THANK GOD, it went very well. No document was requested although I had them all in a folder with me. Thank you urblackpearl for the info on updating my profile. Thank you Chirolechic.
Thank you everyone who responded to my questions and chipped in.

Now it's ticket things... Still searching the thread for info... but thought to put it out here... Cus wakanow of 2015 or Airfrance or BA of 2015 and now might not be same experience... So please do I go with Wakanow or buy ticket by myself? Airfrance or BA? What are they like with pregnant women and women with infants? Flight with one stop for 4hrs or two stops first for 8hrs then 3hrs? Two stops is obviously cheaper but without accommodation? Traveling by myself, worried it will be stressful. Airfrance two stops has Delta Airline in between, any issues envisaged with using another airline to connect.

Interview was in Lagos.

please anyone know an airline that would allow twins with just ONE adult?

i.e pay for extra seat for both babies or one of the babies?

I traveled with my twins and had my aunt to help. The checks and processes at the airports...catering for the two on a long journey....the journey itself... you just can't. And I'm sure you ll have at least a hand luggage. Please don't even entertain that thought because aside breaking down, you ll make a spectacle of yourself.

Thank you too. It isn't limited to sub-lets. This lady rents other apartments which she lets out for pregnant women from Nigeria, I got to meet one of her tenants who had a worse experience than mine. Some of them come up with very unfair/ unfavorable conditions or fail to live up to their responsibilities once you ve paid and moved in. They turn out to be the landladies from hell; at least from about 3 cases I have heard. I think the best bet is to be as independent as possible. Accommodation could be cheap/affordable in Houston; as little as $650/700 per month for a 1 bedroom apartment) unfortunately getting one on your own as an outsider is very difficult. Hence most people resort to such arrangements or airbnb (less risk of dealing with cunning/complicated Nigerians) and Intown Suites. This still doesn't undermine the fact that there are many good and straight forward (Nigerian) hosts out there; I ve heard testimonies. I wish you luck.

On Ladee1, would have been nice to give an excuse. It's been approximately 8 months now. The last I heard of them, they were working towards settling there, meaning they are comfortable. I am not vexed, just very disappointed.
