Really? It's like some people don't know their mates. When Yorubas were achieving these below, what have your people got to show?

- Cocoa House, completed in 1965 at a height of 105 metres was once the tallest building in tropical Africa. It is located in the city of Ibadan in Oyo State, Nigeria.

- Liberty Stadium, The stadium was opened in 1960 during the tenure of Chief Obafemi Awolowo as the Premier of the Western Region.

- Western Nigerian Government Broadcasting Corporation (WNTV) began broadcasting on 31 October 1959, with Olapade Obisesan as its first Chairman. It was based in Ibadan and was the first television station in Tropical Africa.

- The University of Ibadan(UI) is the oldest and one of the most prestigious Nigerian universities, and is located five miles (8 kilometres) from the centre of the major city of Ibadan in Western Nigeria.

Should I continue? Some people do not just know their mates.

Ki ęlęgbę mo ęgbę ę.

Guess you don't know who you are quoting. Have you seen me mention Anambra here?
Moreover, I for one do not see Anambra getting anything like a port, because it makes no sense.
Sorry I didn't check the moniker, i thought it was the guy I quoted that quoted me in return.

Go to Youtube and and watch people showing their cities. Apart from Lagos, 99% of SW is a slum, living in primitive houses.
Many yrs ago, I used to go to Abuja by road to from Lagos or SE, all you see in SW are mud houses with brown rusty roof with no modern
convenience.

If you watch those vlogs on Youtube, you will be proud to call yourself Igbo. My town Mbaise is far more developed than Oshogbo, a state capital; very hard to see any modern building. Though they have better roads in general, but roads are usually built by FG.

This clarifies the question economically..
Nigeria: One Country Four Economies
Discussion Points
By
Falalu Bello, OFR
abumoha1978@yahoo.com

v I thank my friend and Junior brother,
Mr. Sam Nda-Isiah, for inviting me to
speak at this important forum on what
to do to reverse de-industrialization in
Northern Nigerian. When the invitation
was extended to me, I asked of the
topic I am to speak on and I was not
given any. All my brother wanted me to
do at this Conference is to set the tone
for the experts invited to do justice to
the topic under discussion. My role
therefore is not to talk of how
industrialists are to access funds from
the banking system nor even to talk on
such general issues as the importance
of finance to industrialization:

v I have been invited to contextually put
Northern Nigeria amongst other regions
in Nigeria and could easily have
compared Northern economy and its
Southern Counterpart. I have chosen
not to go this route because, I want us
all to see that geography, history and
the Obasanjo administration and its
reform agenda have created four (4)
fairly distinct economies in Nigerian.
We as Northerners need to appreciate
where our economy currently stands
amongst other economies in Nigeria so
as to appreciate the kind of race we
have to run if we are to remain relevant
in Nigeria.

v On the basis of ownership and/or
control of resources that make for
economic development, post-Obasanjo
Nigeria in terms of strength could easily
be categorized into 4 economies as
follows:
a) South West Economy;
b) South East plus Delta
Economy;
c) Northern Economy; and
d) South South minus Delta
Economy

v The four economies mentioned above
are fairly distinct with each growing at
its own pace. The South Western
economy is growing at a faster rate
than all followed by South East plus
Delta economy whilst those of the
North and South South minus Delta
could at best be described as
stagnant. A simple analysis of these
four economies is given below:-

a) South West Economy
South Western Nigeria with
a Land Mass of 76,852
square kilometres and
population of 25.2 million
today owns and/or control
60% of the nation’s
industrial capacity, 44% of
banking assets, 67% of
insurance assets and is
house to the nation’s three
deep sea ports of Apapa,
Tin Can Island and Roro;
the busiest international
airport of Ikeja, three
thermal stations of Egbin,
Papalanto and Omotosho.

Today, its three major
industrial estates of Agbara,
Ikeja and Otta are all linked
to gas under the West
African gas pipeline plan
and piping of gas is ongoing
from Otta to Abeokuta.
Added to these, the South
Western population today is
the most educated as
western education came
through there and education
as a resource was
democratized since the
early sixties. Geographical
location, democratization of
western education,
availability of resources
enhanced in last 9 years
and some empowerment
during the Obasanjo
administration have
collectively enabled the
South Western economy to
rank as first of the four
economies in Nigeria.

Today, the South West as a
region can boast of having
a defined growing middle
class and is perceived to
have at least 20,000 of its
indigenes with net worth of
over N100m each. Take it
out of Nigeria, the South
West economy with is
defined growing middle
class and resources, will be
one of the fastest growing
economies in the world.

b) The South-East plus Delta
The South Easterners plus
their cousins across the
Onitsha bridge control
commerce in all parts of
Nigeria and are thus largely
employed. The region has
clusters of small scale
industries around Nnewi and
Aba. The banking
consolidation has assisted
these people to now have
ownership and or control of
over 50% of Nigerian
banking assets. It also
controls 21% of the nation’s
insurance assets and 20%
of industrial assets. With
this development, this
region which has not had a
commanding control over
Nigerian economy will
certainly begin to do that
now. Commercial activities
backed by finance can only
grow the economy of
South-East plus Delta.

The growing strength of
financial muscle of this
region has been aptly
demonstrated by the recent
licensing of Micro Finance
Banks. Of the over 600
MFBs recently licensed by
the Central Bank of Nigeria
(CBN), Anambra State alone
had 74 whilst Yobe State
had 1, Sokoto 5, Zamfara 6,
etc. There exists also in
this economy a middle
class which will now grow
itself in number and
financial muscle and will
almost certainly grow its
economy inclusive
particularly of small and
medium sized industrial
base.

c) The Northern Economy
The North which
geographically is 719,435
Square Kilometers or 79%
of Nigeria’s landmass and
has 75 million or 53.6% of
Nigeria’s population has its
economy as a consequence
of various reforms
introduced, been totally
grounded. Today, the North
has ownership and/or
control of no more than 3%
of banking assets and 2% of
insurance assets and 10%
of industrial assets. True,
the North has a huge
landmass but this has
remained under exploited
due to jettisoning of time
tested policies of price
support (as a result of
abolishing of marketing
boards without putting
alternatives) and
abandonment of extension
services and quality
control.

Also, the North has
a huge population but the
population has remained
largely uneducated and/or
half educated because of
near failure of governance
in certain States and Local
Governments. Currently its
most distinguishing
characteristic is grinding
poverty. Recent poverty
statistics indicate that the
poverty level of States in
the North has been on the
increase in the last 9 years
and reached over 80%. Its
two commercial and
industrial nerve centers
(Kano and Kaduna) have
seen industrial capacity
utilization decline to an all
time low of less than 10%.

The textile, automobile and
beverages companies that
thrived so impressively in
the 1970s and 1980s have
collapsed rendering
thousands jobless.
Although hydroelectricity is
generated at Kainji Dam
and in lesser quantities at
Shiroro Gorge and at
several smaller sites, the
entire mechanisms are run
on very obsolete equipment
and the performance is
consequently very epileptic
and unsuitable for
meaningful economic
activity.

d) The South South minus
Delta
The South South is largely in
the creeks of Niger Delta and
has therefore a small land
mass of only 48,321 square
kilometers and is populated
by 13.6 Million people.
Notwithstanding the fact that
it is house to Nigerian Oil
wealth, this region exclusive
of oil company activities like
the North is also backward
economically. It controls no
more than 3% of banking
assets, 10% of insurance
assets and no more than 10%
of industrial assets on
account of oil related
industries that the indigenes
do not control. Furthermore,
its overstretched land mass
has suffered considerable
degradation and its aquatic
life destroyed.

As a region,
its people and economy are
worst off than the North as it
lacks fresh environment,
water and even good air to
breath.

This is not the question you should be asking. This same region returned all seized Igbo properties while the Ikwerres chose to latch on to them and convert them for their own use.

The SE is presently nowhere close to the SW as seen by the country's IGR publications. An average Ndubuisi would rather prefer to strategically position himself by leaving the SE for Lagos because he believes Lagos is where everything happens. I don't blame him at all because his beliefs are well aligned with the opportunities of Lagos.

Bulk of what the SW is today is without the assistance of the FG, if you have ever bothered to analyse the situation on ground. For a region that generates about 66% of the country's IGR, I don't really understand how the FG would want to help them.
You are right you can't blame Ndubuisi when Lagos has the only functioning seaport and airport and as a business minded person he will move to Lagos where it will be cheaper to set up his business.
He will not be paying extra fees to transport his contenders (for big importers) to the SE when he can set up his business in Lagos and be distributing his goods nationwide.
The same mentality are shared by foreign investors who know that Lagos is the center of excellence and commerce. He will prefer to stay close to seaport and where the market (a compilation of every tribe in Nigeria and foreigners) is. Since Lagos is filled up the next destination is Ogun state.
But that doesn't mean that huge business is not going on in Aba, Onitsha and Nnewi which are 95% owned by the the people of south east.
That same Ndubuisi will go home to help with others to develop his village and help train his villagers in his line of business.
The same Ndubuisi can migrate to PH to work in oil industry or set up a business near oil workers.
The southwest has the highest IGR I hope you know those revenues are generated from different businesses own by south west, southeast and foreigners
while in southeast it is 95% indigenous business.
The same Ndubuisi can't boast of any FG presence in his region.

What Yorubas do with their money is a mystery to me. Except the cities, you hardly see any modern building anywhere.
Mud houses with rusty brown roofs and open defecation everywhere. Do these people ever take friends to their villages for holiday at all.
They feel ok living in one room. After 30 yrs of age, no Igbo man is happy to go and sleep in a house that does not belong to him.

Back in day, Lagos used to be separate from the Western Region as Lagos was the Capital territory. After the capital was moved to Abuja, Lagos was claimed by the western Region.

I have always maintained that had Lagos never been made capital of Nigeria by by the British, Yorubas would not have been able to make it what it is today
You wrong. 80% of the total landmass of current Lagos State was part of Western Region. Check the records. And when Lagos was made a state in 1969, there existed Lagos State Government with capital at Ikeja while FCT was at Lagos Island. Tell me the state govt didn't do anything since 1969 to develop the state.

deluded mind. Ibadan is larger than awka, Owerri and Onitsha put together. there are many brown roofs in Ibadan and there are also modern building more than any state capital in the south east!!! that is why Ibadan is a sweet mix of the old and new(gold and rust).

back when I was working with the global fund malaria programme in Ibadan, an oversight came from abuja and she's a lady from the south east. she was blown away when we drove around visiting facilities in Ibadan alone for he whole day. she couldn't believe Ibadan is that big!!!

Modified: before you quote me and talk nonsense

This is Ibadan versus Onitsha, Enugu and awka put together. All your 3cities above are not up to 1/3 of Ibadan. Couldn't get a figure for Owerri and umuahia.

I bet Ibadan alone is bigger than all your cities put together

Here is the honest assessment, take an Arial view of each zones of each states capital, urburn centres, towns and villages in terms access road network, schools, health care facilities influx of other tribes and ethnic group living in this states give you an idea. Now for SW; Lagos meets all the requirement because it was a FCT for over 30yrs! Ogun is still struggling to meet up in areas such roads netwk for up coming towns, look at Ijebu igbo et al and how many convenient towns can it boast of, same applies to ekiti and Ondo. Ibadan is just there.
SS, Delta state only because of even spread of development in various cities and towns, Rivers state is concentrated in PH alone, Calabar is fair. Beyelsa is worst but I understand sure to their terrain. Akwa Ibom is also coming up.
SE, only their state capitals for now needs to do more by spreading development to city centres.

NC, same as in SW except for state like Niger which share similarities to Delta state in terms of even spread but needs to do more.

NE nothing to show same as NW.

conclusion and rating! I give to to the SS because of their unity in diversity, it shows in their quest to build a strong region except for some well known crisis, they love all region and they seem to be beautiful bride. SW comes second while NC is 3rd. My SE comes 4th, we have tried, but our greed and not having one voice has put us in this state. NE & NW need to check themselves in the mirror and tell themselves the truth about governance and love for humans! God bless us

My question to you is what do Yorubas do with their money? How can you say you are developed when overwhelming majority of you live in mud rusty brown roof houses with no toilet? If you take a trip around Igboland, you will hate your SW.

Shame never allowed me to visit home for over 5 yrs until I finished my house in the village; it is massive competition down there. I have many Yoruba friends here in London who boast of their 4 and 5 bedroom houses Nigeria. Most Igbos in their shoes will be talking of mansions in their villages.
