When you mean defer ? ... that doesn't mean you should travel now and go and seat in America till fall. No it doesnt work like that

Your first step is to ask the school if you can defer till fall. If yes then nearer that time get a new I20 showing the fall start date and check If the Sevis is ok...if yes then you are good to go. You don't need to attend the interview again or need a new visa stamp . Just keep your passport safe and close to you so world people don't snatch it grin
Thanks so much aunty, I don't mean to go and sit in America till fall, just that I have an ongoing project which I have to monitor till end before I could travel. I will write the school sharply as you've advice, thanks once again.

No issues. A lot of people do it but if your school says no, you better jump on the next available plane to U.S. There was a member of this thread that missed out this way in 2012/2013. Though we dont know if there was more to the story than what he told us but schools hardly refuse deferment within a year.
Thanks for the response sir, I just write the school to hear from them, if the response is no, I have nothing to do than to take the next available flight, just that flight ticket this period is not pocket friendly atall.

One thing i have to say is your looks matter a looot. These people have to interview a lot of people every day. They dont have time for story. One look at You, And they already know if you are real or fake.

Then your spoken English as well.

One guy was shouting at a V.O today. Saying something about coming back home to make Maggie... lol. It was so funny.

Another guy was asked what he would do after his degree and he said he wants to come home. Come home and do what? He couldn't answer.

In the 1 hour I stood there, it was easy for me to predict those who would be approved and those who would be denied.

And all my guesses turned out right. It's not about prayers. The people I was with prayed. I am an atheist. I dont believe in prayers, god or luck. Just hard work and dedication.

You don't need to wear a suit. You can look very good in a shirt and trousers.

Your look is the first good thing. Your spoken English is next. I heard some people speak and I told myself if I were the V.O, I won't approve these ones.

Speak clearly, distinctly and like a graduate.

Don't dress up in bend down select clothes and think one V.O won't notice how cheap you look.

Wear a nice shirt or gown, put on very light make up and put a glasses on your face to give you a more serious appearance .

Luck or prayer don't do shit. Everyone I went in with prayed except me. None of them got it

In my opinion, you are totally wrong because the Vo has no time to look at what you are wearing or how beautiful/ugly you are to get an approval or denial. Moreover, this write up of yours makes no sense and is uncalled for.

You can prepare for and write TOEFL in 2 weeks or thereabout. It's no big deal. If you have the time, you can still write it before travellng. You should contact your school though, to make sure that English course will be waived on presenting your TOEFL result. You might even be able to write it while on campus before the session starts or something around that. You can choose to defer till Fall too-instead of wasting precious money. You already have your visa-so you don't have to go in for another interview..all you'll need is a new I-20.

thanks so much, i appreciate this so much, my school will be resuming jan 11, maybe differing will be a good option.......i really appreciate your concern.....

You're right, we here all have rights to our own opinions. Here's is a start to exercise that right...
You're damn jealous or you feel less privileged.
That's my opinion and it's my right to air it.
Thanks for reminding of my rights.
Any more rights you wanna remind me about?

biikeys has been living in U.S for some years. He's a graduate and living comfortably. I don't see how such person can be jealous of a new comer. They can't be weighed on the same scale. Even the poster has agreed with him on two occasions. So let it slide.

Hello everyone!
Kudos for all the good works you all are doing here. I’ve been following this thread for a while and I want to say I appreciate all your efforts/contributions. It’s been really helpful. Thanks to Walspring, Big Francais, Lagosismyhome to mention a few.

I thought people exaggerate denials here but I realized that it was true as we were four on the queue. I was the last. The first guy got approval while the other two between us got denied. To be candid, those guys were not eloquent, audible and well prepared. My opinion though.
VISA APPROVED! I was interviewed by a white lady in Window5. I just collected my passport on Wednesday. I have been very busy with work and the whole visa thing. Please pardon me.

VO didn’t ask many questions as expected. I smiled all through, kept on talking with confidence that she couldn’t even cut in. She was nodding, smiling and typing at the same time. I did not give her the chance to cut in.

Please see below transcript.
VO: Good morning and how was your night?
ME: Good morning! Awesome and how was yours?*with a bright smile*
VO: Pass me your I-20 and passport. What did you study in your undergraduate?
ME: I studied Electrical/Electronics Engineering from the department of Computer and Electrical department with specialization in telecommunications
VO: What was your undergraduate project about?
ME: Biometrics attendance management system using VB
VO: What will this degree do for you?
ME: This master’s degree will give me the knowledge and skills that I need to work with the for professional growth in managing operations and organizations in the global market by creating a unique blend of state-of-the-art engineering methodologies with key components like finance, marketing, and management theory. It will equip me with the technical know-how which is needed to excel in my field, which i will in turn use for the industrial development of my Nigeria, it will also help turn around the fortune of any company I work with which will equate promotion and higher salary
VO: Where do you work?
ME: Told her. I also told her that I was the youngest engineer working on a module on *** project
VO: Really!
ME: Yes! I also double as a business analyst.
VO: Wow! That’s good. What is that project?
ME: It’s an FPSO ** She smiled* and told me to give her a few seconds
VO: What are your duties?
ME: Told her
VO: How many schools did you apply to?
ME: well for complete application, I applied to four namely Indiana Institute of Technology, University of South Florida and International Technological University, Michigan tech university but my application to San Jose was discontinued because of delay by WES in evaluating my transcript. I had no control over the delay. However, I have been informed by the graduate admissions and programs evaluation that this would be considered in the next admission window since they have my transcript now. That is no longer needed because this is now the preferred
VO: Smiles**Why this school?
ME: I chose this school because the curriculum matches that of my career interests. I am particularly interested in the research area by one of my would-be professor who is into simulation modeling of production systems and business operations. This area happens to be related to the new role i have been given in my new place of work, so I look forward to working with him. I also have a scholarship from this school. Second of all, I was impressed with their timely response to inquiries. I also had a good relationship with my program advisor. She was really helpful. Thirdly, The University’s host city has been ranked among the safest College towns in the United States. The University’s sworn police force provides protection 24 hours a day. Connecticut is also ranked as one of the safest states in the USA. Lastly, It is also more affordable compared to other schools in the US and it meets my Dad’s budget. I have a scholarship as well.
VO: Oh! You have a scholarship, how did you get this?
ME: Well, I sent in all required application credentials including but not limited to my statement of purpose. I want to believe that the admissions committee found my admission file worthy of this scholarship. My work experience could be another deciding factor.
VO: What does your company do?
ME: * I told her and I was very fluent and bold **here was where I nailed it because she smiled* I told her my company is an EPC company. We do Engineering, procurement, Installation, commissioning and the rest. Engineers in the house knows the rest**She was impressed** lol. Naso I dey do party for my mind already say today na today*
VO: where would you be staying in Usa?
Me: I will be staying in the school dormitory. The school has 2 hostels but I prefer the savin court apartment and the process is on-going.
VO: who is sponsoring u and what does he do?
ME: I have a scholarship and my dad will be paying for the rest. He is the ***. I have his bank statement here.
VO: Flips through the pages of my passport and she said I will be approving your visa. She returned my I-20. Keep it safe. It is as important as your passport as you will need it at the POE in the US. She gave me the white paper and circled the location of pick up. She didn’t ask for any document.

I couldn’t hear much at this time but I kept nodding. I said thank you and do have a lovely today. Please prepare well as much as you pray. I did not let the denials of those guys in front of me to get to me. Rather, I took it as a challenge to impress the VO. Please dress well. At least, be bold in whatever you wear. There is no dress code but I was sharp in my sky blue shirt and Navy blue pant well talked in. Also, use proper English words/sentences. I thank God for this success. It is my prayer that for the rest of the spring applicants and subsequent applicants, God will favor you.

I got my visa approved on the 29th of December, 2017 by the VO in window 1 (lady of the year) collected my passport on the 5th of January 2018.

Transcript below.

(Got to my turn to be interviewed, VO didn't greet and I quickly said "good morning" the VO now with a sweet smile responded, Good morning.)
VO: pass me your passport and i20( she did so with a smile), where are you going?
Me: Boston, Massachusetts. To get a degree in information communication technology from NEU
VO: what is your highest level of qualification
Me: I have an ordinary national diploma in computer engineering from auchi polytechnic. Auchi Edo state Nigeria
VO: what year?
Me: I got my ordinary diploma in 2014
VO: what have you been doing after then?
Me: there's a mandatory 1 yr industrial training, which I completed with Bleep company and was luckily retained.
VO: what did you do with Bleep company
Me: I worked as a radiofrequency engineer, there I had the opportunity to carry out drive test and analysis to benchmark network performance, check for network route using google maps and verification of network sites for 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE.
(Now work start for her to ask me question, and trust me, I was fully ready for likely questions that would come from my duties)
VO: so why did you choose ICT?
Me: Ma'am, during my stay with Bleep company, I was among the delegates sent to represent our firm at a discussion forum held in Abuja, by NITDA (national information technology development development agency) to discuss the impact of ICT in Nigeria, there they explained how ICT has helped Nigeria economically, politically, socially and also in our educational sector, but laid strong emphasis on the major problem ICT has faced in Nigeria which is "poor management of information" (here she nodded her head)
VO: so tell me how information can be managed?
Me: I think by encryption of datas, not too sure but this is actually the reason why I developed interest in studying ICT in the US so I can be well grounded on how it is done, there are so many computer engineers and computer scientist but a scanty number of IT specialist here in Nigeria to remedy the problem of poor management of information. (she cuts in)
VO: what is encryption?
Me: encryption means to protect or secure something
VO: so you made mention of working as a radio frequency engineer and your duties
Me: yes
VO: how do you check for network signals in sites?
Me: we check for network signals using our normal smartphones and RF scanner receivers, these devices checks for QoS and QoE (i.e. Quality of service and quality of experience by end users)
VO: What is the frequency of network signals that is transmitted?
Me: (For here my brother, I could never tell if I was right or wrong, I just said) it depends, from 20 hertz to 120 hertz
VO: (nods her head again) ok, so tell me how this will course will help John (that's my name)
Me: Yes, this course will help me a lot because here in Nigeria I have been opportune to hear from a federal government agency, to let me know that poor management of information is a major challenge nigeria has been facing for years as a result of the scanty numbers of technical know-how. Me getting a degree in ICT will equip me with the needed skills to fill in the gap and create a lasting impression to solve the ICT challenges we are facing in Nigeria
VO: who's sponsoring you?
Me: my dad
VO: what does he do for a living?
Me: He's a major distributor of Bleep cement in xxxx state and also supplies steel rods, roofing sheets and blocks for building in xxxx state.
VO: Ok John, I will be approving your visa this time, you qualify for it( passes the white paper to me and circles the pick up location and continue her talk oh) I see your school resumes 8th of January so I will advise you email the school to extend your resumption date, so you don't face problem at the PoE, because your passport will be available for pickup in a very close date to your resumption. Blah blah blah!
Me: thank you, I will do that as soon as I get home.
VO: ok, thank you.

It's just God who made this possible for me, I was denied on the 5th of December.

My advise to everyone applying, just be prepared and well grounded both relevant and irrelevant things partaining to your traveling to the US.

Good luck

Please how do I get a cheap health insurance? The one recommended by my school is over $1500. Anyone with suggestions?
Now that you have done the right thing, this post might be helpful to you .
Anyway you can use http://www.InternationalStudentInsurance.com but you will have to check the requirements for health insurance in your school first to be sure it meets any of the plans. Typically, the budget plan should work for you and depending on your age, it is very cheap compared to US schools health insurance. The price gets higher with age but still at that, it will still be way cheaper than your school's. For those planning to come in spring, if you plan to use any health insurance apart from your school's, make sure you fill out your immunization form before coming because most of the outside health insurance don't cover vaccination. On the insurance website, you can check the plan that your school will accept, most schools are listed on the website with the plan that is acceptable to each school. If you are below 27 or so, you might not pay more than $200 and $300 for fall and spring respectively (spring has more months than Fall). Above 30, its like $300 and $480.The price goes up with age, still at that, its far better that the exorbitant fee your school will charge.By the way if you don't know what to use money for..I am a pm away. Lastly, fill your immunization form before you leave Nigeria and ask questions, no excuse for ignorance.
