Good morning, Christmas has come early and i am dropping my own christmas present . I got a call on Sunday from someone in the East who wanted to purchase pork from me so he could resell. I saw it as an impossible endeavour both logistically and cost-wise. This week, the same issue came up. I have decided to drop some pointers so that everyone can be helped. The biggest problem any producer or manufacturer faces is the problem of disposal/selling of his/her products. Whenever people sell ebooks or do seminars, they focus so much on the profitability of the business (check out those mouthwatering millions) and how to make the business work; they conveniently, or maybe mistakenly, forget to talk about disposing the end product (i am talking to everyone, not just pig farmers). As a result, people enter the business and then are heartbroken when they cannot sell anything. With poultry, its worse. MARKETING OF YOUR PORK You have reared your pigs and they have attained market weight, how do you sell them off, especially if you arent in a pig community? Here are some suggestions: 1. Go down to real communities around or near you and make connections. Connections and networks are the net worth of every entrepreneur. Don't be too lazy or afraid to go out and make contacts with people who can buy from you. Please, be careful so that you don't get duped or owed. Cash is king always. 2. Why not forward integrate and control the entire process from start to finish, like i said above in one of my posts? Even if you dont have a piggery and are looking to tap into the business, sell pork and make money. as a producer, it becomes doubly rewarding because you end up making more money than you would if you sold them as live animals. Note that it is the processors of any product that make more money than the raw material producers. What are your views on the issue of marketing, whatever agricultural angle you might be coming from? What have been your experiences? Lets tackle this all-important issue and see if we can make a headway and make farming very interesting. N.B. A lot of people have been demanding for a comprehensive seminar that will practically discuss the entire process of pig rearing, from start to finish, embracing both backward and forward integration. I have been hesitant, but the question is this: will a seminar in 2018 be a good idea? Let me know your thoughts |

A seminar will be a very good idea, especially when conducted on-site! I have some little experience in pig farming with my folks while growing up. It's now time to tap into this experience and also update my knowledge. I need all the information I can get. Please consider putting up a real seminar as soon as possible; we are interested! You can also contact me for ideas on planning the event. |

Dear Dynamix Thank you so much for your selfless contribution. I am learning a lot from you and still looking forward to get more. Interestingly I got the motivation to go into pig farming from same oke aro though I have mine somewhere else but oke aro is A - Z hub of knowledge and lots of advantage. Your contribution is very appreciated because you owe none of us the sacrifice of time you are giving to type and post this information. Sincerely appreciated and please keep helping us. I am just few months old in piggery but feeling like a year due to info I got from oke aro to kickoff the farm. I will like to add one thing though which I observed in oke aro, space is a challenge when you start having more pigs then you have to buy or rent more pen, and it seems getting a pen to buy is difficult and can only be by finding an existing owner willing to sell as there are no new pen/ land space for pen. Renting is more possible and doesn't come cheap either. But it's a good place to start for newbie and possibly expand somewhere else if possible. 5 Likes 1 Share |

dynamix101:Thanks for the write-up bro. Pls what are your thoughts on Combining piggery with Poultry? Especially when the space btw the 2 pens would be Less than 2 metres but completely separated? Do yOU think it would pose a threat to the birds? I have a poultry with fishpond I no Longer use due to Leakages. Am toying with the Idea of Converting the ponds to pig pens. But am scared because Of It's proximity to the poultry house. l normally raise broilers and Sometimes pullets in that pen |

obstead200: There is no danger in terms of disease spreading from one to the other. Pigs and chickens can stay together but please ensure that none can stray into the other's domain because I have heard funny stories of pigs killing and eating chickens. 2 Likes |

There are various breeds of pigs available such as land race, large white,Duroc and Hampshire.
