Good evening sir. Which company can one work as a graphic designer and is it very marketable?

The truth is that even my firm here in Lagos hired a graphic designer, but it wasn't advertised. You need to have insiders in most firms, and they will help you.

Even as a freelancer, Graphics design is so lucrative.

I deliberately decided to stay away from commenting on this forum for a while as a result of loads of unproductive threads been created on a daily basis with zero value in anything you can think off but this thread worths my time and impute because it is the type of thread that will really impact positively on so many rational beings out there that comes in contact with this thread.

A friend from this forum back in Nigeria reached out to me sometimes last week about what he can do for himself this year so as to make himself globally marketable and I told him point blank what I did and encouraged him to do so as well by researching on any subsets fields in IT that has zero prerequisite to learn which means you don't need any prior IT background for you to start learning.

There are lots of online IT training and resources one can utilize and get started, everything must not be in a classroom settings, you can learn through live online classes or go through self paced trainings where all the materials and video recordings of everything you need to know are presented to you and you can access them and study at your own pace.

YouTube is also a global University where u can learn anything for free then go and sit for the certification exams and get certified once you pass the exams but I'm a huge advocate for paid learning which is one way to treasure and value the knowledge you sort for.

My current work schedule only allows me to take a self paced training which I am currently utilizing for my TABLEAU DESKTOP/SERVER Training which is a 360° switch in career and it might interest whoever reading this piece to know that I have zero background in the IT field.

The cost for this training I'm currently undergoing is so little compared to the value I'm getting from what I'm learning.

It is a 40hr course with 80hours real life organization problems which is equivalent to 6months - 1 year work experience which will be in your resume once you are done and pass the TABLEAU DESKTOP & SERVER certification exams.

I'm not going to post the link to the training site here except if the Creator of this thread authorizes me to do so and the link comes with a 20% discount for the training fee.

I did made turns of online research which I started in the month of September 2017 on what IT field to venture into in 2018 so as to move up the food chain which also has lots of job openings.

I narrowed my options to Linux System or Network administration, Cyber security or go into medical coding and while I was almost settling for Linux System Admin, I came across TABLEAU Associates which will lead to one becoming a Certified TABLEAU PROFESSIONAL.

I researched about the nature of the job, job availabilities and their median annual salaries and "BOOM" I became curious and excited at the same time.

I was curious because I have never heard of TABLEAU before so I was like "which one be this one again" and my excitement was the opportunity to learn something new, that has lots of global job opportunities and the prospect of commanding a fat annual salary once certified. ( More tax refunds -lol )

Do not follow anyone's recommendations, do your own thorough research and make an informed decision based on your research on what route best suits you.

While in Nigeria, I was programmed to believe that you must have a basic background in something before you can learn it and Once I left the shore's of Nigeria, I found out that such thinking wasn't only misleading but also the highest form of ignorance being flagrantly posited as truth.

You can learn anything you set up your mind to learn, the only thing you need is the will power to get started, then the dedication to see it through and keep advancing.

Best of luck to everyone in here!

Thanks for your input. You can post the link.

As for many useless threads being created on daily basis, it sucks real time. But I do my best to maintain such posts on my blog.

If you have good knowledge in IT and willing to share, you can contribute on my blog. I would be so happy to publish it. Thanks for your time.

The truth is that you could have created the sort of thread that make sense rather than the outright dismisal most of the ones created by many others and you could have stil made your comment without bothering yourself with those....

Now to the meat of the matter, most peps are classroom learners first before they can pick up self paced online ones.....I tried learning via Treehouse, i didn't quite get it until i enrolled in General Assembly FEWD Course at their London Campus after which i picked up the Treehouse and have continued learning via Online mediums rather than through classroom settings.

At the end of the day..passion and willingness to invest time, effort and money one will be ready to go

Why do you think people go to University to study engineering? We can all trouble shoot and find solution if we have interest in the job.

In the course of preparing for your certification e.g Cisco (CCNA, CCNP, CCIE) if you study it with your lab and study it like your life depend on it ,you ll be confident to troubleshoot, build , configure and run any network structure or architect.

Whoever wants to go into I.T should follow the process , get your certifications, learn so that you ll get the job.

Even if you want to become an I.T technician try and study for ComptiaA+ with these you will be exposed before you get to the real world.

Yes, when you get the job you will learn. It happens in all areas. Even if you made a first class no employer will employ you and give you tools and ask you to start work immediately , you ll have to under study even if it is for few days.

So please go for certification it is your degree in the world of I.T just like CCNA (Bsc), CCNP (Msc), CCIE(PhD..in the world pple with this certification are less than 50%)

Don't know why people classify programming as a career when it is actually a subset of e. g web development, app and software development
Yeah! Fact is everything IT software rests upon programming... So perhaps, your web development, apps/software engineering etc should be subsets of programming.
When you do other IT subs to the zenith, you're IT guru. But when you do programming to a damn break-neck feat you're Geek! See?

Have you heard of software development life cycle?. Programming is just stage 3 which is called implementation

Yep. But let's do a lil definition here; how do you describe Programming?
You impress me as a fundamental IT person (not sure you're a professional...) the SDLC you mentioned is strictly a Model... If you grasp that!

well let me explain, the word programming is a vague and broad term.
You don't see a company say we are looking for computer programmer as a job advert, you see things like Full stack developer needed, software developer, testers and software engineers in the case of big companies.
Everyone is a programmer but what is the specification.
A novice that writes Hello World is a programmer but will you say he is a developer.
PS:Concerning the issue of whether I'm a professional, I am a web developer.
I code too alot

Now, I think I get your angle.
So, let's discuss like professionals: Programming is simply instructing the Device or application what to do. I trust you understand this.
Now, concerning job descriptions, I quite agree most posts go specific (and all are programmers). Without jerking much over this, I believe you'll agree with me that the broad spectra of IT departs @ Hardwares & Programming (Hence, Programming should be the parent while others her subsets) - Talkin Hands-on...

Good evening sir. I'm thinking of learning graphic design. Do you think one can easily get a job from that field?

graphic is good. I think u need to focus on skill development first b4 thinking of jobs or else you will loose focus and be tossed here and there.

if u combine it with animation, u will go far but like I always say, if u love a particular job, u will spend ur entire time learning it and u will b ready to work free of charge

Programming cannot parent everything, what of algorithms, architecture etc.
Programming is just like the implementation of the already conceptualized process.
The term you are looking for is DEVELOPMENT.
I had a project last week, had to put everything on paper to help ease my coding. That was algorithm and architecture definition. Then comes the programming, testing and debugging.
If you think programming is a big umbrella, start building an app without planning it first, you'll be sorry for your code

You may choose to go to Training centers if you have the cash, which is low by the way... Alabian is a very good place, or if you are like me with not much money you have to bet on yourself and teach yourself...

the list is endless
Alabian is better than New Horizons and Aptech and Niit? I don't get it. I want a place to learn Web development and Mobile App development

lol... that's true. But I know several people making it in Nigeria without going to school, would you advise your kids not to go to school?

People are different Sir, but we just have to follow the norm but think outside the box.
Apple's and oranges bro. Following the norm doesn't help most times. After getting certified, if you still can't back it up, then nothing for you.

I mean, it's fine and good if you can afford it, but if you can't then....
Maybe it's because of my field, or where I am, but I don't think I've ever seen a programmer job whose requirements had a programming-related certification because any serious company knows it's BS! (Again, I'm not talking about certifications outside software engineering)

An Oracle certified Java Developer that cannot for example explain basic OOP concepts is an embarrassment

You can't call the Foundation of the web mere basic...Building logins, authentications and sessions driven web applications are they the job of a designer or a developer? Don't confuse both read my English again, a Web designer is not necessarily a programmer His Job is

- Create the structure using HTML

-Work out the aesthetic presentation using CSS

-Workout basic interaction using JS ( form authentications etc )

And he doesn't necessarily need to be a wizard in JS to do any interactions implementations.....as he can do those with HTML5 or JQuery without knowing it the way you're putting it

What of those that build or design with just CMS? will you now demise them because they can't code JS like you?

pls I've managed to learn html and css but js is too complicated for me, is there a way around this?
