8 Things You Need To Know About New Zealand by femijck(m): 3:19am On Aug 21, 2017
New Zealand is no doubt a tourist destination than a live in country for many people, beautiful and fascinating scenery. But before you finally make that decision, here are the 8 important things you need to know.

Most of the houses are old bungalow
It may look charming, but chances are it’ll freeze parts of your body that you didn’t even know existed.

The Land of the Long White Cloud

1. Colder Inside than Outside

New Zealand is a country abundant with low build-quality houses, with minimal or no insulation. Most houses also have issues with dampness. In the summer you can feel too hot, and in winter you’ll be chilled to the bone.

If at all possible, hold out for a modern, insulated house – unless of course it’s one of the leaky ones.

2. A garden shed masquerading as a family home

Turning up the heating might temporarily add a degree or two of warmth to the garden shed you now call home, but just wait till you get your first electricity bill. It’s then you’ll wish you’d paid attention to point 1.

If you’ve bought a garden shed masquerading as a family home, you can insulate it, double-glaze it and install central-heating to make it equivalent to a home in another developed country. It will cost plenty of money, but until you’ve lived (and frozen) in one of these old New Zealand houses, you can’t truly appreciate the value of these improvements.

If you’re renting a shed, you’ll either need to foot the huge fuel bills or, as Kiwis will say to you: “harden up and put on another jumper” (or a coat!). Buying and running a dehumidifier will most likely be the fastest, cheapest way to make your home a bit more comfortable.

3. Not for the Faint Hearted

New Zealand is geologically active, so you’re at risk from earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions.

4. Voting Against New Zealand – with their feet

Hundreds of thousands of people have moved from New Zealand to Australia. Since New Zealand’s population is less than 4.5 million, that’s a lot of people voting with their feet for Australia and against New Zealand. Every New Zealand citizen has the right to live and work in Australia.

The hordes fleeing the country induce regular outpourings of angst in the media. Short of Australia legislating against New Zealanders, or New Zealand introducing North Korean style legislation, New Zealanders will continue moving to Australia, where the mining boom has steadily pushed Australian wages to among the highest in the world.

5. Homesickness

The number one reason we’ve seen for non-Kiwis leaving New Zealand is homesickness, usually bound up with missing loved ones. If you have very close family or friends you will miss dreadfully when you move to New Zealand, do think carefully before moving because…

6. Price Gouging on Flights

New Zealand is a long way from anywhere else – obvious, you may think, but a lot of people forget about it until they actually get here, then they find it’s too expensive to visit family and friends back home every year. People from the UK and USA complain that it’s much cheaper to buy return flights into NZ than out of NZ – watch out for that if you’re making plans.

New Zealand sun - before/after
Be careful out there, or you too could suffer from microwaved skin.

7. Wrinkly New Zealand

New Zealand will make you wrinkly before your time. The summer sun is very strong – much stronger than people from Europe (including the Mediterranean) or North America are used to. Sun-screen is a must, or your skin will be damaged. You can see skin damage on a lot of born and bred New Zealanders, some of them not especially old. Sunglasses are also a must, because cataracts are a real risk too.

8. New Zealand will drain your bank account

The cost of living for all too many grocery and consumer items will be higher than you are used to. The huge economies of scale that are present in many countries are absent in New Zealand. Expect your shopping bill to be higher than it was and to have fewer choices in nearly every store than you’re used to. Furnishing and equipping a home will also be expensive.

while not try the essential skill visa directly...but if u are able to get the visitor visa, I know u will surely get an employer to sponsor your application as long as u qualify. How do u intend to get d VV? Do u have family here? Though I'm in AKL.

bruv, you don't know how difficult it is getting an employer from here. I even tried DKW recruitment. they told me to get in touch with them when I get within the county. And you know I can't get an essential work visa without a valid offer of employment. my qualification is just normal apprentice certificate that oga will give after graduation. I do have a degree in agricultural engineering and I have been practicing stick welding for more than seven years. P.S: MY DAD IS A WELDER. I want to apply for the visitor visa directly. I have read the requirements. I need all the tips for a successful application. Am sure u can guide me since you said you also used the visit visa route thing. I don't have a family in new Zealand. Kindly brainstorm on all the assistance you can offer me.

well i would love to help if i could but if u don't have anybody to invite u (family), then u should be looking into tourist visa because i don't know if visitor visa will be possible without an invite....talking about an employer, i mean when u are here and not naija.
drop ur email i will hi u....but u need to read about NZ visa success before u proceed. NZ is a small country and and things are abit different from Europe and America especially when it comes to immigration.......it's really slow and strict.

Bros from my understanding of the information on their portal, the visit visa is same for tourist. New Zealand's visit visa is used for touring as well. Please do well to hi me on kl_bakare@yahoo.com. I love this your brief description thread on things to expect in new Zealand.

you do not need a medical for a visitor visa except it's more than a 3 months visa...I used doctor Fatayi Clinic in VI then..(he's a panel doctor)..I can't remember the address but not far from Eko hotel...I think the building is called Grand square or something....66k

okkkk, I followed through the INZ website and one of their criteria was needing a medical assessment. Plus I want to do it here in Nigeria because once I get a job in New Zealand and I want to do my essential skills visa, they will request for it. And it might be way way expensive over there. So what about insurance?
Re: 8 Things You Need To Know About New Zealand by femijck(m): 3:00am On Mar 13, 2018
Well Inz website is your best bet.

But I will give u a first hand info from my experience...If u are applying for a. Visitor visa of less than 6 months, u do not need any medical or police report. if atall u will need one, your application will be approved in principle and your case officer will tell you the next step through the AIP email and how to go about it.

Inz accept only e-medical, which means the panel doctor send your results directly to them and it's valid for 36 months ...u don't even have any copy other than d e-medical numbers.

I didn't have any health insurance, I only took some drugs with me...if u sustain any injury from a road accident here, u are covered by the government insurance.

When applying for any visa, the most important thing is to show that your are a bona fide and ur intentions are genuine. i.e for a visitor visa, ur intention is to visit and go back and no other plan(even though u can still get d chance to apply for another visa incase ur plans changed while u are here)....as simple as this may sound, it's the most important and difficult aspect of a visitor visa to be issued once u meet up with other socio-economic criteria.

Doing a medical while u were applying for a short stay means that u are telling Inz that u plan to stay longer or ur plans are not genuine. If it's not e- medical ,u can do it and keep it. But u cannot do that with e- medical as the result is uploaded directly into your profile with INZ.

Medical cost btw 200-300 Nzd here so the difference is not so much. Keep your plans first and focus on getting d visitor visa since that's your plan... submit the necessary docs for a visitor visa.

When u get the vv, then u can do ur police report and have it sent with ur credentials by courier while u r onshore.... don't even bring them with u because if u r unlucky and ur luggage is searched while u are on vv at POE, then your visiting intentions are not true and u can be denied immigration clearance and sent back

Also be sure u know what you're doing because getting an employer to sponsor you or a job that will meet the regulations of essential work visa may not be easy as u think...but not impossible.

I hope that helps..
GOOD LUCK

Its a 2 yrs work permit to new Zealand, and the processing time is 3 to 4 months.. After that duration and your visa doesn't come out a refund will be done... Like I said, I won't wanna involve anyone until mine is out, so its gonna be something that was taste and confirmed by me.. Won't want my name to be associated with fraud .. Thanks
