Yeah. I do. Unfortunately I'm not even close to PH. If you've got a VAG vehicle, do yourself a favour and get one of them. Got the VAGCOM with the KKL cable and VCDS with the newer stuff for the newer Audis too.

The car was my car not a client' s car and the people that sold it to me was Lanre shittu and the people that took it for repairs was vw center and I was not the rewire that detected the fault. Therein lies your stupidity. If you have vagcom, did vw center tell you they dont have also? If yours drives well, count yourself lucky but I guess you did not buy the 2.0 passat in 2005 when it wad in vogue, so talk about your experience and let others learn from how you overcame yours but ask around from the owners of the brand, how they are faring with their Vws and take a trip to Gbagada and see for yourself and you will conclude by yourself that you made your stupidity very obvious.

Stupidity eh? Don't make me laugh. On second thoughts go right ahead since I'm laughing already. You somehow linked poor quality fuel (as you say) to a transmission related issue you had with a Passat.

As you claim to fix cars I must call you out on your incompetence (utterly so where VAG cars are concerned) because it really is scary that someone like you may be called upon to give purchase advice on a vehicle.

Is there a lack of qualified hands to work on modern VAG cars in Nigeria, yes. Do said vehicles require greater attention to maintenance schedules et al, by all means yes! But the fact irrefutably remains that what you put up as a reason why VAG cars should not be driven in Nigeria can be described as nothing less than obvious incompetence. Woe betide the unfortunate individual that brings his VAG vehicle for you to massacre.

Oh, and other owners of "the brand" who have respected the maintenance schedules and requirements are doing quite well thank you. But by all means, please continue with your display of ignorance. It has been a busy week and laughs are in short supply.

The Car came to Nigeria and became another story all together.the car will spend 2 weeks at home and 3 weeks at the mechanics workshop.the best you can find in those days at Alapere ketu.Every time Old man goes to the state he comes with a full suitcase of Spate Part.At the End of the day the car was given to the mechanic in exchange for is workmanship.I noyiced then that though the brand Aufi 5000s was visibly present on Lagos roaf then it disappeared one after the other.If our fuel was not the problem then something must be.After the Almighty Vw Beetle.Danfo and the early Passat.most of their new product though beauty to behold are not Nija friendly.reason i font know

I hear you loud and clear and your dad's experience is evidence of the lack of qualified hands. A car was working perfectly in the US and suddenly turns to a lemon in Nigeria. Getting the picture? Think about the fact that even Audi A4s had DBW throttle as far back as the late 90s and imagine how many years it took most mainstream manufacturers to implement the same tech.

I remember a recommended mechanic vehemently insisting that my fuel pump was bad when VCDS told me the failing main ECU relay was the culprit. Gently pointed at the relay, had him get me a replacement, and haven't had any issues years later. The chap still looks at me sheepishly whenever we run into each other.

Take the time to understand your vehicle whether it's a Yaris or an S Class, and it will reward you accordingly.

Wonderful laugh I had this morning. I had a similar experience in 2006. Brand new passat bought in 2005. A year later, gearbox was jumping the gun on gear 3. Took it to the seller, no warranty for gearbox says lanre shittu. Took it to Vw center and new gearbox is 1.1 m. Haba, brand new car? Changed gearbox used for 650k bought at Owode, same problem, petitioned Vw Germany and they made Vw center to pick up the car but they could not detect the fault. I then took the car to a rewire who later detected the gear ecu as the problem. To compensate for their inadequacies, Vw center gave us discount for the ecu at 90k and the matter was resolved. They then decided to give the engine an overhaul for free, less than 10000kms, and discovered that 2 connecting rods were bent. Engine drips water and very quiet when you start it. The long story is that by 2008, the same issue kept reoccuring and I eventually abandoned it to a mechanic who claimed I was owing him 150k for repairs that did not work. My experience and observations are, the vw brand is not good for Nigeria. The fuel we have does not work well with the brand. You will hear tales by moonlight with your Vw. No matter how adept the mech is, the Vw is best served parked away than being on the road.

I am glad that you noticed that Bora has disappeared from our roads. The fuel is the reason. That info was given to me by the vw group. Bora all died because by 2002, we were still using leaded fuel and so they all died. The gear is always the first to go because it cannot cope with the sluggish nature of the engine. In 2006, the gear cost 650k at Owode for a car just a year old. The same fate befell Vboot Mercedes that it is now a relic. With good mercedes mechs around, people were still changing engines and golf 3 and 4 are going the same route now. Until we have premium fuel, the brand is not worth it

Anything Passat na dead, I remember when my uncle has this Passat wagon that motor broke down at every bustop, my uncle turn me to motor boy cuz of this dead Passat I always followed him to work this car develops new fault everyday I remember then in abj na 3rd term holiday I go do oh but my uncle turn me to motor boy I suffer gan for this Passat. my suffering starts everyday from washing this cupboard of a car in the morning and stops every evening when we park it! I had to lie to my uncle that I was tired of abj just so he can send me back to Lagos , �

I’ve had great experiences with VW and the passat aswell. It requires good attention and maintainance that’s all and u have a Ure self sweet and rugged machine.

I am enjoying my Audi A4 B6. Coro gang will kill to ride innit

If only you knew what I went through with my first car in 2008; mistake of a life time, it put me in great pain and losses. Let me tell this story. I had a Passat 2.0 in the year 2008.

I went through air with the engine and gear box, when I intended to procure a new engine but could not find the engine in the Nigerian market not even in Lagos, as the car was not popular then, so I was advised by the engine seller to buy another engine (Audi A4) for conversion. He told me it would work and will be even cheaper that the original engine. He said he would recommend one of his mechanics to do it for me.

One of my friends said, “no, it’s better for us to use our mechanic in a situation like this, someone we know.” He told me, “this ibo man can do some tricks on us all the way just to sell market”, so we contacted the mechanic we knew. The useless mechanic, after examining the engine, told me that the engine would work in the Passat 2.0.

I paid for the engine and we picked it from the mechanic workshop. During that process, I was buying one thing after the other. I was running up and down all over the place, forces to buy so many things, all costing thousands and thousands.

That is when I started hearing of deferent names in motor engines. The painful part was that the money was not chicken change for me - it cost me hard earned money. My main reason for fixing the car was to sell it ASAP but it then turned out to be worthless.

So, let continue. After the mechanic finally sat the engine after spending several days and emptying my pocket, he then ‘discovered’ that there was a wire cable that comes out from the brain box which connects to the engine and opens the injector to pump fuel and there was nowhere to fix that on the new engine. After about 99% completion! I was like “wow!” - I was almost mad at that point. I asked the mechanic “what is the way out?” He said there is nothing he could do.

Then we had to discuss what to do. Someone came up with an idea to put in a carburetor at this point. I was completely tired of the car my mind at that point was to abandon the car in the mechanic workshop, but some other people advised and encouraged me to convert to a carburetor engine, saying they are even better than injector engines. I never wanted a carburetor engine because they are noisy, but there was no other choice for me at that time.

So I decide to do that. At that stage I had been forced to spend money I didn’t budget for at all. I was even afraid to continue - my leg was shaking while spending but I used bottles of beer to console myself..

To cute the story short, I bought the carburetor and the mechanic cute the injector pipes and gave it to the guy to install the carburetor into it. During this process I was still made to buy many different things just to seat the carburetor. I bought a new battery and they asked me to buy a new brain box to construct this. I was charging batteries every day, even renting more. Whenever the motor refused to start, it killed batteries very quickly.

Later, they finished with the carburetor construction and the motor indeed started, but with some noise. The mechanic said the engine was noisy because it was newly fixed, but after some time, it would be normal. However, when the mechanic sat the carburetor and everything in the engine, the bonnet could not be locked anymore . There wasn’t even any space for such act since the motor was not designed for carburetor. At this news I almost fainted because I had spent hundreds of thousands for all this nonsense.

I left the car there to face other things, but my mind couldn’t get away from that scene because it was so painful, and heartbreaking for me. Then one of my friends contacted another ‘good’ mechanic. I used the word “good” because he said the guy is good and the best Volkswagen mechanic he has known. He explained everything to the mechanic and asked, “what is the way out?” The mechanic suggested that we should reinstall the former engine and that we should ‘rise’ the engine. He said we would have to manage it until we found the right engine and the money was available for it.

When me friend contacted me and told me what his mechanic said, I said to him “what?? Spending more money on that blood sucking car? Is it the engine we have thrown and abandoned?” I told him I was not ready for this. “As you can see, I am just trying forget about that car for good, and here you are coming up with this again?”

He then begged me to try what he just told me. He said that he believed in that mechanic. I said, “the motor currently is with the other mechanic, so what do we do?” He said both of them should fix it. I then said, “ok. How much it gone cost me to ‘rise’ this engine? They did the calculations, and it was a few thousands of naira. So I gave him the money and said him, “I am counting on you. I want to hear on the phone that the car is working and can be driven.

However, at this time I contacted the man who sold the engine to me to explain the whole thing. The man said that my friend’s mechanic was not a good mechanic. He first advised that we use his mechanic ( bla bla and all that) I told him that will return back the engine - that we are not using it anymore - though the mechanic had tampered with so many things in the engine (cutting the injector pipes and all that,) He then said he had to take a look at the engine before he could say anything.

Now back to the rising issue, my phone kept ringing with requests for money to pay for more things. I said “what about the statistics you guys gave me earlier?” They said the extra just to buy some minor things which were not on that list. I said “okay here is money.”

After everything, the car was moving like something with no power and jacking when moving. It would stop and overheat within 5 minutes of driving. At this time the mechanic charged me 45,000 naira for all this rubbish. He said he had been working on my car for almost 2 weeks now, and had not done any other work. I said, “but you can see the condition of this car at present, that there has been no improvement.” He said that’s no business of his, as he had “repaired” my car.

I almost got some men to beat him up. Some of my guys wanted to even put this guy on their boot and take him away, I just had to beg and make peace, because I saw everything as my fault and my eyes were now wide open. I paid the mechanic 25,000 naira and took the car away.

My only option was to sell this car. The question was, “who with his right senses would buy this car?” Some guys advised me to go and park this car, and just patiently wait until whenever the engine was available. Then I could fix it, complete with a jack box. I said, “no I can’t keep this car any more. The only way is to sell it to car “busher” to dismantle it for spare parts. The Igbo men there priced it too cheap, so I eventually sold it to back to the same man who I bough the engine from, for very little money.

That was the end of my baby passat 2.0 experience.

Well, I had similar experience with my first car two years ago. It was a V4 Hyundai Sonata '08.
It was actually my fault from the on-set. Cos I was looking for a cheap car so this had a bad engine (smoking). I asked my mech how much the engine I was heard 150k. I also made enquiries with other people Ooo and car engine sellers....so buying the car was a fair deal for me. Not until I bought it finish and when it was time to fix I got to know that the engine for my model was 350k. Hahahahahha
I just tried to work on it and it even became worse. At last I sold it for half of what I bought it after all the money spent to bring it back to a non-smoking level.

I also made a mistake on my second car but it wasn't as bad as the first....engine was good na just say the fuel consumption fit give person heart attack.....lol
I still have the car sha cos I love it.
My third car was a '02 Accent and its was great owning it. I have given it away now. Planning to get my 4th sometime next year. I have a few saloons and SUVs in mind. From Benz C320 to Ford escape. Still doing my research. So what car do you use now.

Passat car was an agbana in Yoruba language...In 1992 my either brother gave me two doors Passat for transportation...the car almost took my life..I regretted take the offer, though I was still a student..just to patched.. but I saw hell,I have to dumbed it...Move on ..

I'm going to be quite harsh, and blunt here.

First of all, there's nothing wrong with the Volkswagen Passat B6. All your problems stemmed from one major issue here - cutting corners. You opted for the cheapest route you could find (or so you thought). And ended up with a grease monkey using your pride and joy for "mechanical practice". The crudest for of R & D (Research And Development).

The Volkswagen Passat B6 2.0 is a direct-injection petrol engine. Available as FSI or TFSI (turbocharged). Like all late Audi / Volkswagen, the engine managed by an ECU, and the signals are CAN-BUS (Controller Area Network-BUS). The only engines that will work in this car, AND communicate with the instrument cluster, climate control, cruise control, TCU, (automatic models) ABS, EDL, convenience modules etc is the CORRECT engine.

I am shocked that Joel would allow himself to be hoodwinked into converting this engine to an older one, worse running a carburettor in a 2008 CAN-controlled car!! The mind boggles. If I had adviced against this "conversion", I'm pretty sure I'd have been ignored. And before anyone steps in, and says Joel isn't mechanically-minded, think again. There ARE franchised Volkswagen dealerships in Lagos, and other parts of Nigeria. There are forums dedicated to just about every make and model of car out there, from a Kia Picanto to a Bugatti Veyron. The smart thing to do when you have an issue with a car, especially a late and complex one, is to search online! The average Nigerian "mechanic" has NOT mastered the repairs and maintenance of a 1996 Toyota Camry V6, or a 2000 Honda Accord 2.2 V-TEC. Yet, you'd expect these same guys to lay their grubby paws on your new car?

Your moderator is NOT a mechanic, despite his knowledge of his car. He learnt some aspects from myself, and the rest by joining car forums dedicated to the Peugeot Brand. And the reason he picked up so quickly?

He has a genuine interest in his car! No mechanics will be building duplex's with his hard-earned money.

Yes, it's possible to downgrade the excellent direct-injection petrol engine in the B6 VW Passat to run an old carburetor, or mechanical fuel-injected unit from an older car. But you'll lose cruise control, dash functions, (instrument cluster) climate control, ABS, TCU communication etc. All the nice touches which probably made you buy the car in the first place. Why lose all this? I just don't get it.

This is even worse than the guy who had his Dodge Caravan "converted" to run an older Toyota engine. At least, his car is not CAN-controlled.

And if I may ask, what was wrong with the original 2.0 FSi engine? You say you bought the car with a "dead engine." Could you please expand further? Because in my book, a dead engine is one that's thrown a rod, scored the cylinder bores too deep for a light hone or overbore, cracked block due to overheating. If it was simply knocking, smoking, seized, spun bearing etc, it is perfectly serviceable. I would NOT advice a replacement engine in a 5-year-old car, unless it's absolutely unavoidable. I would rather rebuild it, that way retaining the same engine number. I would walk away from a 5-year-old car with an engine number that doesn't match the ne in the vehicle registration documents.

Sorry Joel, you brought this upon yourself, and I personally don't sympathise. I feel more sorry for the poor car, which has literally been reduced to a pile of rubble by your "mechanic". The only good thing to come from this is at least others can read this, and learn from your mistakes. And hopefully you too will have learnt something, albeit at considerable cost.

I once used the wagon type. My experience was horrifying. Mine issue was 1st gear box, my mechanic advised i covert it to manual. That was the beginning of my dilemma!
I later sold the car i bought for 1.1M for <250k
