NIGERIAN AIR FORCE COMMENCES HEADQUARTERS INTER-BRANCH SPORTS COMPETITION

As part of its continued efforts at promoting physical fitness amongst its personnel to enable them effectively perform their duties, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) yesterday, 12 September 2018, commenced the maiden edition of the Headquarters Inter-Branch Sports Competition for personnel serving in Abuja. The competition, which is an initiative of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, is also aimed at reinvigorating sports activities and encouraging participation in sports for improved physical health and mental alertness. The competition, which would be holding on monthly basis at NAF Base, Bill Clinton Drive Abuja, would further foster espirit-de-corps as well as identify talents to represent the NAF in future championships at Service and national levels. The 10 HQ NAF Staff Branches and NAF units in Abuja have been structured into 4 teams to allow for administrative effectiveness. The teams are to compete in various events, including; athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, football, golf, handball, judo, squash and swimming. Others are table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, tug of war, volleyball as well as wrestling.

While speaking during the opening ceremony, the CAS noted that the NAF places high premium on physical and mental fitness, and would continue to ensure its personnel engage in sporting activities in order to retain the agility required of a fighting force. Air Marshal Abubakar, who expressed satisfaction with the large turnout of personnel, commended them for their participation and urged them to sustain the military culture of regular exercise for effective and efficient service delivery. The CAS also commended the Chief of Administration NAF Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal Kingsley Lar, for organizing the competition and ensuring that Wednesday Games are revived to further enhance the battle readiness of personnel.

The competition is also expected to be replicated in all NAF units across the country. Aside the monthly Inter-Branch and units competition, other fitness activities NAF personnel engage in include the quarterly route march exercise, 10km walk/jog, Wednesday games and combat sports competition.

tell me about "Soldier 2000"

Was developed over 4 years by the CSIR. So the pattern was developed through a dedicated project, not just picking a scheme that "looks how camouflage should look". It's a combination of the pattern as well as the material used.

Thing I found interesting was the pattern is designed to function in the infrared/night time observation realm....it wouldn't have occurred to me that they thought about that, or how to even do that.

Blood lust is not tolerated on this thread. Please delete the inappropriate pics.

Let me just say this: these aren't enemy soldiers but mass murderers and rapists. We should remember that and the atrocities they've inflicted before judging anything harshly. But,if everyone wants them deleted, who am I to defend the OP as this is a public forum?

Those camo's were tested by some platoons when I was still in the SADF. I was told that the IR suppression was a function of the material they used. The troops testing it were quite excited , because we were told that they would outlaw the ironing of the uniforms as it degraded the IR suppression of the material. We were also told that it was specifically designed to counter the IR system of the MI-24 gunship.
(They might have just used one to test it.)

Keep in mind that a lot of this could have been made up. The Army had a lot of BS rumors flying around at the time.
Any SANDF guys out there know if the Ironing thing is real ?

As for the old Nutria (kak-brown) uniforms. They were ,counter to popular belief, actually very effective. Especially if you included local foliage and had proper training in cammo. A good technique was to lay prone in the shadow of a tree or bush. You'd be very surprised to see how difficult it is to spot a guy in browns lying in a dark shadow. Even up close.

Here's a good vid made by a USMC trainer on the SADF nutria's effectiveness. He also has some great training vids for all you active duty guys.

I was told that the cammo scheme was computer generated at the CSIR based on natural colors found throughout SA that was sampled by a nationwide research project.

The ironing thing is true. grin grin grin
What I don't like about it is the heavy feel to the thing. I did 2 deployments in Sudan and it was uncomfortable af. The second thing is the extra fabric around the backside in the trousers. Apparently this was to cater for the steatopygiac proportions of African females. shocked shocked shocked

The defence section of CSIR used to have a document on their website on the 4-year project to develop the uniform as part of "Soldier 2000". I'm told they're working on an evolution incorporating nanotech.

I know the ship's sailed but I do wish we'd retained Nutria brown. Cheaper, effective and in these days of camo being a fashion item, easier for the media to tell who's a soldier and who's not. grin grin grin
The SF Brigade has retained their olive drabs after all. And so have one of the best militaries around, the Israelis.

"The ironing thing is true."
That should get you at least another 2 hrs sleep at night during basics !
I think one of the biggest reasons for dumping the nutria was to distinguish the SANDF from the SADF during the transition phase in the early 90's
It would have been quite practical to issue nutria along with cammo so we could retain something that would be more effective in desert conditions like Sudan.

Sleep during basics? I went in as an UCT ("Moscow on the hill"wink Honours graduate and the instructors singled me out for attention. I still have nightmares about it.
The common sense solution would've been nutria brown for savanna and desert, and olive for the current jungle and tropical deployments.

Andrewza, rumour going round here that MRS will be deployed here. MRS higher brass were here recently, to "figure out logs", apparently.

Seeing they're such a small unit, with their anti-piracy duties where would they find the people? That said, if true, can only be a good thing. The lakes patrol duty to counter weapons smuggling -currently assigned to the Uruguayans - needs more resources and assets.

Spoke to a mate who was here as part of their brass' protection detail who mentioned their short-term goal is training up to the level of the Pathfinders and building up to a battalion in the mid term.

PICS: MRS in DRC, showcasing the specialist skills these Marines are now acquiring and hope to standardise: missing the FAC and HALO/HAHO badges on the 1 guy who didn't want to be photographed.

Basic funda is like that of a spill resistant clothing where nano fibres r embedded in the fabric and act as a barrier to external liquids etc and thus keep the clothing fibre from coming in contact the liquids, and the liquids simply rolls off. All thanks to nano technology.

Here most probably they impregnated specially structured nano tubes or something to allow signature management at selected frequencies of the spectrum.

And that is why the advisory against ironing grin

Over a period of time it would destroy the alignment of the nano fibres or the integrity of the nano structures embedded within the cloth fabric.

Seeing people have recently mentioned Col Barlow and STEPP on this thread recently:
interview the man himself gave to Russia Today(RT):

And the interview he gave to Jack Ryan over at SOFREP:

NATIONAL SECURITY: NAF ENLISTS NEW SET OF AIRMEN, RECRUITS 7,644 NIGERIAN YOUTHS IN 3 YEARS

One of the prerequisites for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to continually meet the imperatives of its constitutional roles is an adequate strength of vibrant manpower. To this end, as part of the ongoing process of building and sustaining the necessary human resource base to meet national security imperatives, the NAF has graduated another set of recruits, comprising 1,558 young men and women of Basic Military Training Course (BMTC) 39/2018. The colourful Passing Out Parade (POP), which took place today, 14 September 2018, at the NAF Military Training Centre (MTC) Kaduna, had the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, as the Guest of Honour and Reviewing Officer. In his address at the occasion, the CAS disclosed that the NAF had trained a total of 7,244 young Nigerians as airmen/airwomen and 400 young graduates as officers since assumption of office of the current NAF leadership in July 2015. According to him, the effort is aimed at boosting the capacity of the Service to sufficiently curtail insecurity in the country while also implicitly keying into the Federal Government policy of job creation for young Nigerians.

While charging the new airmen/airwomen to be resilient, tough, courageous and apolitical in the performance of their duties, Air Marshal Abubakar stated that the 6 months training was deliberately structured to be rigorous in order to expose them to near real-life scenarios of what the nation expects from them after graduation. He affirmed that the NAF would continue to encourage personnel to be innovative and subordinate their personal interests to those of the Service and the Nation. Speaking further, the CAS reminded the graduands of the enormous tasks ahead of them as they are joining the Service at a time when the Armed Forces is involved in several operations to curtail insecurity across the country. “As the gains of our troops are being consolidated, you may be deployed to the operational theatre to contribute your quota to our national security. I urge you to operate within the rules of engagement as enumerated in the code of conduct for armed forces personnel involved in internal security operations. You must respect and protect the innocent and law abiding civilians whom you are paid to defend. Treat them with respect and protect their rights. It is by so doing that you will be discharging your professional and constitutional duties”, he said.

Air Marshal Abubakar, while reiterating the need for NAF personnel to submit themselves to civil authority in accordance with democratic tenets, also warned the passing out recruits not to allow themselves to be used by any subversive elements in the society to compromise national security. “We must therefore resist the temptation to brutalize or engage in physical contacts with civilians. Our duty is to protect all Nigerians irrespective of their ethnic, religious or political inclination”. The CAS then expressed the profound gratitude of the NAF to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, for continually giving priority attention to the operational and logistics needs of the Service. He pledged NAF’s unalloyed loyalty and total commitment towards ensuring the peace and prosperity of the nation.

One of the highlights of the event was a silent drill demonstration by the passing out recruits. The ceremony also featured the presentation of awards to the 3 best graduating recruits. The award recipients were Aircraftwoman Rita Offormah, Aircraftman Victor Achilonu and Aircraftman Ebenezer Makinde, who won the CAS, Air Officer Commanding Ground Training Command and Commandant’s Awards for emerging first, second and third in order of merit. It is noteworthy that this is the second time in history and second consecutive year that a female graduating recruit has won the CAS Award. The ceremony witnessed large turnout of dignitaries including the representative of the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, serving and retired senior officers as well as families and friends of the newly enlisted airmen and airwomen.

Ironing is true. I have not tested the thermal protection of the uniform but I know it is protected against certian chemicals and it is fire retardant. Similar to the uniform we use in the navy. All so IR educing uniforms is not rare. Most western armies do it. It does not remove the thermal signature just reduces it. Means goes from 5km to say 2km at what it sees you. All so highly dependent on the environment.

Mrs is basically 4 units. 2 are not relevant since one is divers and the other maintain certain and logical guys. 2 are operators. One is a Boat unit that use small boats the other is a stand by QRF team. Both can do each others jobs.

So a ship on anti piracy only takes 20 odd guys. That not even all of the boat team personal. Never mind the QRF guys. MRS has the personal.

Other thing to look at is they could just deploy as a straight light infantry company. Every operator is at least air assault qualified and they do the same 9 months infantry training the army does.

Of course we spent money on two types of river boats built to be sure lifted. So it makes more sense they do lake duties. But that would require a larger investment by both us and the UN since we now instead of sending 100 plus infantry we have a 100 plus Infantry, some boats, trailers, trucks, spare parts, mechanics. Resources are here but it needs the capital to move it. At least the c130 can carry our boats the MRS use and any samil can tow them
