Lol.. I've read comments and some are quite funny.
We cannot deny the fact that we'll always and forever remain a native of this Country. It's your hometown.
You may have decided not to come back at all but believe me, one day, you'll visit. Nigeria is ordained to be a fruitful and blessed country but it's yet to manifest. It's the duty of every Nigerian to stand firm.
If your location doesn't change you, then change your location and achieve your goals and dreams.

If you have an opportunity to leave Naija, do that fast and save your unborn children and generation the stress of being enslaved. My current location has been a blessing to me and my family. I found favour before God and Men. It's indeed a fruitful emigration.
I never planned to visit Naija again but I did because there was a need. It's my First home and cannot deny that fact.

GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Reading the comments here made me sobber, and angry at the same time. Lately, I'm always battling with my emotions if I made a mistake in deciding to stay in Nigeria. Just look at all the things people are enjoying and taking for granted abroad which we home-based see as luxury!? I had the opportunity to travel to the US this year but I passed it over to my brother and he traveled to the US along with my sister. I thought I would be somewhat okay in Nigeria since I was earning relatively good money (averaging about 250-300k but now seems to be fluctuating downwards) in a not so expensive city. I even installed solar system in my office to overcome the notorious power problem but most times at home, a neighbor will always leave his rickety generator on even late into the night with the noise and fumes constituting serious nuisance!! Nigeria is just a terrible and hopeless place where nothing works yet I'm very reluctant to travel abroad. Someone said that Nigerians are living a mediocre life grin grin If only the politicians and indeed everyone else will be responsible productive maybe we won't be in this mess we are currently in. I keep saying it, the problem with Nigeria majorly caused by the north. Northern Nigeria is largely unproductive and the South has to pay for it by subsidizing them!! If the whole country is working in the same pace then our GDP would have been double of what it is currently and the north won't have been so adamant against restructuring. Nigeria will be in serious trouble if the status quo remains considering that income is likely to fall or at best remain the same while population keeps ballooning!! My ambition has always been to earn enough to travel the world and send my children abroad for good education but this country is so unpredictable and with buhari staying beyond 2019 I don't know what the future holds in stock for us. So sad.
Oh my. ..ur comment calls for a sober reflection.
In all my 20+ years on earth there has never been an independence without a sober mood. It even got worse with the president's speech. Ahhh mogbe!

Believe it or not a millionaire or billionaire in dollars living in Nigeria is living in hell. An adage where I come from says "if you are the only rich man in your family you are still poor" The so called political elites in Nigeria don't know that they are very foolish & wicked. How long will you continue fueling your generator while your neighbors live in darkness and so on.

Do you know that Tanzania don't have 10% of the blessings of Nigeria but that country is better than Nigeria in all aspects. The youths of that country do not have this "GET QUICK RICH SYNDROME MENTALITY" inbuilt into the Nigerian youths & even children these days.

An average Nigeria business man especially those from that part of the country is programmed to cheat or sell you fake stuff. While tell me a pair of trousers is 5000 whereas it is actually 500 naira ? This does not happen in Dar es Salaam

The time is near where the rich in Nigeria will become an endangered species. No security can save you. Continue destroying that country. Na so oyinbo destroy their own na every where cool for you & your children to live

kidnapping as an occupation started in Nigeria by kidnapping expatriates for huge ransom. And thereafter metamorphosed to kidnapping locals. Now many are hailing yahoo boys (now yahoo plus eating human feaces, killing for money rituals etc) in the guise of no jobs for the youths. You all supporting one evil or the other in that shithhole country will be swallowed directly or your family members affected. Ride on

If we can't get our country egalitarian with the huge human & natural resources available...we are amongst all nations the most miserable

What people called living good life in Nigeria are normal & way of life in most African countries.

She has turn down the offer her cousin sent her to come and stay in the USA.

Why don't you invite her for a visit instead of a stay as that seems a bit scary for her at the moment. make sure she has a return ticket.

I have a sibling who lives there. He says the police are feared even more than soldiers. He says Nigerians are notorious over there. There's a particular market, Missebong market that is dominated by Igbo traders. The traders have been chased away more than 10 times, but each time they turn their backs, the traders are back there. The police are even tired of chasing them away and have left them to keep trading

This thread really makes me sad to the point I feel my eyes watering. Anyone trying to defend Nigeria by saying ‘it isn’t so bad’ is only lying to themself, a country where you can’t boast of complete 5 hours power supply in a day, what am I even saying? Some placed haven’t seen power in months, a country where people die for lack of police report for proper medical attention, a country where it’s leaders travel to other countries for medical care, a country where you have no emergency response unit for whatever, a country where you get laughed at for being duped or stolen from, heck! You get blamed and called a mugu for being a victim of a corrupt system, I feel very sad honestly especially today, and someone will telll me happy independence? May that independence kee you there, nonsense!

A friend of mine called me from Kenya today and I told him I just went out to buy fuel for my gen and he asked, "do they still take light in Nigeria? I can't remember the last time I heard the sound of a generator" sad

If you want me to be honest it's really about thinking about the future. .
1. I'm really not made for the cold. I can never get used to it.
2. State pension over here means confirmed poverty in old age for the unprepared.
3. There is more potential in Nigeria if you have the funds.
4. It's easier for people like me due to the exchange rate and my foreign currency that's the simple truth.
5. I have more family and friends in Nigeria.

Thanks for the insights.

Is cold really that bad!

Cant one invest or build houses and rent out like we do here? That's with respect to state pension and what do you mean by it being poverty in old age?

A house of less than 500k in the US has better Quality and structure than that of 5,10M dollars in some places in Naija

LGBT are everywhere, I agree. The problem with Africa is that it isn't legalized here and many can't bring themselves to accept that there are people who have no interest whatsoever in the opposite sex.
Religion also has a huge role to play.

Many have been forced to hide their sexual orientation due to the fear of being arrested and embarrassed. I wouldn't call myself an advocate for LGBT, I only ask that they should be left alone since they don't disturb anyone. Besides, my best friends there were all lesbians. And they are amazing ladies.

Thats one things that differentiate those countries... U will be very comfortable if you are hardworking... Their labour pays & we've got an edge as a Nigerian because of the hardship training we do grow up with.

Never travel or live in any country illegally o grin grin cos that can cut short your dreams!

Thanks for the insights.

Is cold really that bad!

Regarding your first question about Cold.
It is very very very very bad. To put in perspective when last did you hear that a large number of people died of heat in Nigeria? Now here in Europe it's a normal thing for people to routinely die of cold weather EVERY year. Although the majority of deaths are old and infirm people.

Basically at the start of the winter season if you go to any hospital or chemist, you will see them advertising health campaigns to remind people to get something called a "flu shot". This is a yearly thing,it's like an inoculation against catching the flu due to cold.
If you fall asleep outside during a harsh winter day there are high chances you will not wake up. Many homeless people die like that every year over here.
During harsh winter days if you go outside without gloves,a hat or thermals you'll start to feel pain in your finger tips and they'll also feel numb. Also your ear lobes will feel like there's someone sticking pins at the top of your ear. Not considering things like cough and catarh because those are normal in winter for everyone.

Regarding your second question.
It's very rare to see anyone "building" a house abroad. 99.9% of people buy houses via mortgage. They'll only give you this after an affordability and income test and credit check. You also have to leave a sizeable deposit.

Regarding your third question.
I can only speak for where I live at the moment. The government coffers are pretty tight currently. We also have a conservative government who are pretty harsh. As such pension payments are very meagre. On top of that they are gradually increasing the retirement age.
Meaning you'll have to wait longer before retiring and claiming your pension.
This presents unique problems for people of colour.
Number one it means statistically some people will not get to receive any of their pension before they die as they increase the age. Meaning they've saved money.
Number two it means for many people they will still legally be of working age but unable to find work because of age discrimination (employers thinking they're too old)but also they can not claim pension (because gov't says they're not old enough).

Now through into this mix that it's hard enough to find work as a young, fit, able and educated black person.
Imagine how hard it'll be to look for work in your 60s as a black man or woman against younger natives.

You might say well find a job and don't leave. Well they have that covered too. There's something called seasonal company restructuring. Most companies here in Europe restructure either departments or the whole company every so often. This to save cost, meet changing technology or legislation amongst many other reasons. During these exercises they normally get rid of staff they consider dead weight.
It works like this, a department with 10 staff currently will be restructured. All roles will be terminated and instead of 10 roles being recreated they'll make it 7 roles in the new structure. Now everyone has to reapply for their jobs! No matter what happens 3 people will be made redundant.
This is one of the ways they respectfully and in a civilised manner show you the door.

In summary you have to plan ahead. Many of us abroad already know this.
