Mallam Zakari could not sleep at night. He kept tossing on the bed. He had taken a very wrong step for the sake of money. False witnessing was a grievous sin. He was going to swear in court, and lie. SubahanAllah! That was dangerous.
He began to sweat. What if he refused? Lawal was going to collect his house, and even demand for his money. Then what will happen? His pension was meagre and was not enough to keep him up, besides he had a larger family, and now used to money, car and eating good food.
Falmata now claims she had stopped eating tuwo, and miyan kuka just like Talatu.

“ But you have been eating that all your life!” He had said to her.

“ What about Talatu yar gidan Ado Wanzam? She used to fry and sell waina at Gwaraji Junction but she too does not take all of that today. You give her what she wants so that should apply to me.”She had rolled her eyes.”
There was competition in the house and that meant needing more money. It was all his fault. He was a little above sixty years old, he ought to be preparing for his grave and not going out of his way to seek for worldly things. Shaidar zur(false witnessing) was not something taking lightly.
He was not going to do this. He had failed himself. Let Lawal take back his house but the money was no more intact. He still had three million Naira left which he was planning to invest. Let it all go for the sake of Allah. He was going to confess, and apologise to Professor and his family.
Let it go.
With that he slept off.
He did not know that the case had been withdrawn.

“ I hope you did not expose yourself?” Naairah said as they drove back home, “ because everyone is astonished at the way he withdrew the case and even apologised.”

“ I did nothing.”

“You are speaking with your wife Mr Hayati. You must have taking him so hard. He was literally scared. The police dropped the assault charges, and everything just died with Lawal writing an undertaken. But thank God they can live in peace. My dear Nadia, she went through hell.”

“I know I crossed limits but I was so angry and could not let them suffer more. Okay, I did not tell you but I punched him and slapped him. You know that is very unlike of me but he got me off the edge. And I threatened him, and got some dirt out of him. The police know that what they did was out of their jurisdiction so it was easy for me. I was going to use some mighty powers to fight it. Life is all about risk and I did that to save the poor couple.”

“ Thank you very much Hayati.” She smiled. “ I am so happy right now.”

“ So am I.” He said then remembered Baanah. That was his biggest trouble right now. She was so rude, condescending and so full of herself.

“Where are you going to?”She asked as she saw him take a turn.

“Bread.”

“Funny, you have a confectionary and you are buying bread here.”

“ We have not I have, Miss sunshine and you just committed a great crime.”

“I am sorry.”

“ Okay, I will decide on how to punish you later on.” He slowed the car and then parked. “ Do you have special needs?’

“Yes, chocolates.”

“ You and chocolates, I hope you will reduce the intake when you get pregnant because I will fight you hard.”

“Pregnant?”

He stopped and gave her a pacific look then smiled, touched her face with his palms then bent forward to kiss her, “yes, insha Allah. I pray you would carry my child one day.”
She nodded, short of words, and felt her eyes accumulating tears. That was just a dream now, and he was only calming her down but it worked. She was lucky he was a darling, and tried to make her feel happy. He went out of the car and went inside the confectionary.

Naairah quickly wiped off her tears, and Baanah came into her mind. If Baanah behaved the way she did even when she was not yet his wife, what would happen when he married her and she began to give him babies? What would become of her? Would Adnan’s love for the babies make him derail?
She trusted him, but a woman could not be underestimated and one of such women was Baanah.
It was at that time she heard an argument. It was between an ‘express’ man and a lady. Naairah recognised the man to be the one who said he was educated that day and spoke very horrible English.
He seemed to be a trouble maker. He was dressed in an old fashioned coat, then covered his head with an old beanie.

“ whose you?” he shouted at the lady. “ because I am express is nos means you can insulting me.”

The lady seemed shocked.

“I did not insult you. We were bargaining and I said it was too expensive. What I said was an idiomatic expression.”

The word idiomatic expression was what got him angry the most.

“ God punish you!” he barked.

“ Otuh, relax nah!” His colleague said.

“Why I go relax? Because I dey do express no mean say she abuse me. I agree I dey do express but I no be idiot. She call me idiomatic express. Na her papa be idiot no be me.”

The lady now got it. He took idiomatic expression to an insult. Idiot and express.

“I see why you are apoplectic …”She said trying to calm him since she realised his ignorance.

“Una hear ba? Una carry una ear hear ba? She don turn from idiot to epileptic. She think say I no know epileptic.”

The lady gave up and moved to another bike man.

Naairah was so engrossed in watching the drama she was not aware that her husband was back.

“What is going on there?” He asked.

“ Never you call say idiomatic expression because I am not an idiot.”

“How?"

“The lady said idiomatic expression and the guy went mad that she called him an idiot express man. And she made it worse by saying he was apoplectic and the poor guy told her that he was not epileptic.”

“ Damn!” Adnan laughed.

They arrived home to find Baanah waiting with her small pack. What was wrong? What was she doing here?

Adnan alighted first.

“Baanah, what is wrong?”

It was then Naairah noticed another girl who was sitting on a small box.

THIRTY-ONE

She did not hear him sneak up on her but she felt his cologne and relaxed. He coiled his strong arms round her, his warm breath splashing on her back neck and she felt herself melting. She dropped the knife and sent the hand back to find his ear, circled it with her finger before resting it on the neck.
Jamil let out a deep sigh, then found his palms moving up until they cupped her chest. It was unexpected and she flinched, moaned then chuckled trying to shove off his hands.

“No honey….”she whispered, “ I am cooking.”

“ I know..”He whispered and used his hand to lift her face, set the lips in a position that was easy for him to kiss. The softness of her body driving him crazy, and he found himself holding on tighter before a hissing sound brought them out the hold.

“You see, if you let my food get burnt, I will deal with you.” She said and opened the cover of the pot and added water. “ Go away……woman wrapper.”

He laughed. “I haven’t heard that phrase for long. I was a little kid then when it was prevalently used. Okay, I am going nowhere so better accept me.”

“No touching.”

“No touching.”

“Deal.”

“Deal.”

“Good boy.” She smiled.

“ Did you spill oil on your neck?”

She raised her eyebrow.

“I am not sure but you cannot tell with a woman in kitchen.”

“Wipe it off.”

“Where?”

“Your neck….”he moved closer and began to rub her neck sensually . It was after it lingered too long she got his trick.

“ You enhh! I said go out of here…”she chased him and he ran out. He went out of the kitchen and hid behind the door. She came out and did not see him.

“ Ojujuuuuu!”He said in a deep voice and she flinched, automatically ran and jumped on him out of fear. He laughed at her .

“Now it was you who came to me..”

She laughed.

“You got me wallahi.”

But she was in his arms, he held her by the waist, her legs could on his thighs and she felt solace in his arms, she moved her head closer to his and they kissed.
He carried her back on the kitchen, moving while they kissed and sat her on the cabinet.

“ Sweetheart…..”she whispered.

“ Darling….”

“ I love you.”

“I love you raised to the power of zillion.”

“Awwwwnnnnnnn”

They held each other.

“They can’t separate us.” He said . “ No matter what they do insha Allah.”

“ Ameen.” She said. “ I am glad it is over. Thanks to Hayat.”

“Yeah….that guy is more powerful than I thought. I don’t know how he got him to his knees.”

“ Yeah. The storm is over.”

“ Now all we have to do is love, love ,love, and love.”

“Endlessly. Lionel Richie and Diana Rose sang that song, Endless Love.”

“ Eternally. Yeah, and that is the love we have here insha Allah.”

They kissed.

“ Don’t do that again. What if they shot you? You were fighting armed policemen.”

“I know I was wrong. I should not have done that. That is why I hardly get angry. They got me to the egde and I lost it. They were taking you away from me. I will do anything to stop them ,that does not mean my actions were reasonable.”

“I understand my love. I am glad it is over and you are not hurt.”

“No my love. I am okay just the scratch from the mosquito bite in the cell.” He said and chuckled.

“ Is that why they said love is dangerous?”

He nodded.

“Especially when it is real. I will bear anything just to be with you.”

“ Shut up and kiss me, please.”

Lawal walked into his living room and lurched on the sofa. Sa'ima walked in and sat down.
She was playing her Ayatul khursiyu, still chasing away demons.

“Sa'ima.”

“Yeah?”

“ I just got married today.” He said. “ They are on their way now bringing the bride.”

What?

“It seems it has just been mere coincidence and not Ayatul khursiyu because if the Ayatul khursiyu is to work for you, then you would be out of this house because you are evil.

“Yes, then the house would be empty because you are evil too. Let her come and meet me. She will know who I am.”
She sprang up, crying and ran inside.

Sa'ima could not take it any longer. This was too much for her to bear.
The bride was a slim girl whom she was sure she could break with a twist. Sa'ima had tried to provoke her, so she could beat her up but the girl kept ignoring her. Lawal put her in the big room, gave her the kitchen and spent almost every day with her.
When she played Ayatul khursiyu, the girl would be playing Audhu billahi min ash-shaytan rajim.
The girl would make phone calls to her friends and say, “ sorry I did not pick your call. I was with my husband and you know how it is, and after everything, I will be so tired I won’t know when I sleep on his body. It is everyday but never humdrum. Don’t mind him, he says he just found a wife…..now.”

Sa'ima had gone to her kitchen the other day and poured her food away, the girl- Hameeda did not act as if she knew what happened and that pained Sa'ima most.
Sa'ima would not work, the girl did the same. They would both sleep until Lawal returned. Lawal would come back and meet no food, then he would go out and buy something.
Well, it was only a matter of time.
He married Hameeda to quell his anger and punish Sa'ima but the punishment was falling on him in the end. He had received a call from Mallam Zakari that day, who said he was scared of going to court to bear false witness. He was ready to return the house and the refund part of the money.

“I have forgiven them.” Lawal said. “They came to beg me so I let them go. But I need a favor from you. I need a girl to marry within the next one week. Money is not a problem you know. There is one of your daughters I see….”

“Hameeda? She is a very good girl. She knows how to cook, and …..”

“Name her bride price.”

“ I have given her to you. Because of the inconvenience of timing, and the ………”

“Name the price.”

“Bride price of one week notice is ….one million naira.”

“Okay, I will send people to you tomorrow. Send the sizes of her wears to me now. I will send everything with the lefe tomorrow.”

“No problem…..but you know I am not ready now, You are a big man and your wife must bring big things to your house. I cannot….”

“I will send five million into your account right now. Manage that for her things.”

“ Angama (Done). Hameedaa! Ke Hameeda!”

He heard Mallam Zakari calling at once

The next day, Hammeda was outside with her fiancé, Ashiru crying.

“ I don’t know what he means. He wants to get me married to someone else.”

Ashiru Sighed.

“Who is the person?”

“I don’t know. I do not want to know, I do not care. It is you I love and nothing will separate me from you. Forceful marriage is not allowed in Islam and I will tell Mallams to preach to him. Knowledge is prevalent now. I love you Ashiru. Nothing will separate us.” And she began to cry.
It was while she was crying three expensive cars came and pulled up in front of their house. She saw some men carrying expensive boxes into the house. These were the lefe he had bought for Nadia. They were filled with expensive things.
It was loaded in a Lexus SUV. Then she saw a man come out of another SUV. It was Lawal and his friends. Lawal remained outside, leaned on the car and sipped bottled water.

Jamila, Hameeda’s sister ran to call her. She said she was being called. She excused herself and went in. Her father called her inside and showed her the boxes and the things inside. He showed her ten bundles of one thousand naira notes.

“This is one million naira, your bride price. And there is a Lexus SUV outside for you. Your husband to be is outside, he wants to say hello to you.”

Hameeda nodded and began to cry. She went out, passed Lawal and went to Ashiru.

“My love, stop crying.”He said. “I know how you feel.”

“Ashiru….you know they are my parents, and it is not good to go against their wish.”

Ashiru said nothing.

“ They said I should marry him. I do not have an option.”

“You have an option . Let us talk to Sheikh Khalid..”

“No need. They just want to punish me. No problem, I will bear the pain…”

“But I don’t want to lose you.”

“You have lost me already Ashiru.”

“What?”

“That is him standing over there. The boxes you saw was my lefe and that car there is mine. I don’t care about that but I want to obey my parents.”

“ Please, the love we shared….”

“Haba Ashiru, which love are you talking about? Mai hankali ke gane dingishin kwado (it is a wise man who detects the limping of a frog). Understand this please. My bride price is one million Naira. Take, this is two hundred thousand naira. This is another two hundred naira, get a bike and go back home. I did not want it to end like this. May Allah give you a better wife.”

Ashiru was shocked.

“Are you buying me off?”

“No. Just giving an ex lover something …..”

“I won’t take it. You can’t buy my love. Go away with your money.”

She dropped the money on the ground and walked away to meet Lawal. It was in the night but he could still see the money.
He walked away angrily, paused, turned and saw her talking and smiling at Lawal. Look at the girl who was swearing and crying minutes ago.
He quietly walked back, picked the money, used his flashlight to look for the two hundred naira which was not part of the bundles. Wind was taking it away; he chased and picked it, hissed then left.

That was how Lawal got married to the twenty year old girl.
Now Sa'ima was happy Lawal was not around. It was just her and Hameeda. They were going to settle it today.

“Hameeda…..” Sa'ima called her, her eyes red from Codeine. “ Dan kutumar ubanki zo nan (insults her and asked her to come).”

Hameeda stared at her as she walked dangerously towards her.

“ We have been waiting for ages.” Baanah said. “ Where the hell have you guys been?”

“ What is going on here?” Adnan asked.

“ Umm Aaliyah told me to bring her here. This is Aisha, she is going to stay here and teach Naairah how to cook.” She said. “ The wedding date has been fixed and I feel ill-prepared. Three weeks is a small time though but Umm Aaliyah would not change it.” “Three weeks?” Adnan asked.

“ I told her to make it a month but she won’t listen. It’s even easier since it is not taking place in Yemen. Not everyone likes to come here.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“Nothing.” She shrugged.

Adnan could not understand this. He had the right to run his house. Why should such decisions be taken without his consent? Three weeks? Was this really going to happen? He was just twenty five for crying out loud and they are putting him through this already.
Aisha was around eighteen years old, with a small structure, very long black hair which she covered with a light veil.

Naairah looked at Aisha and smiled.

“You are welcome.” She said, went and opened the door and went inside.

Three weeks!
Three weeks and Adnan is no longer hers alone. Okay, let every lady never hope to keep a man alone even if he never gets married to another but have it at the back of your mind that anything could happen. But it was hard to swallow and not so soon. It was just too soon but she did not want to be selfish. They needed a child she could not give and it seemed they were in a hurry.
It would have been easier if Baanah was nice. It was consoling that Adnan loved her and was probably not in love with her……for now. But she trusted him, and felt he would never maltreat her. She just felt that.
Should she beg him to get another house for her, even if it just a two bedroom apartment where she could have some peace and leave the mansion for her?

Adnan also went in while Baanah called the gatekeeper to carry Aisha’s box inside even though it was not so big.

“ Naairah, where is her room?” Baanah asked authoritatively.

“ Come with me.” Naairah said and led them to a guest room.

“ When last was this place cleaned?”

“ The cleaners do that daily but if you are not satisfied, you can clean it more.” Naairah said.

“ I should do that myself?” Baanah asked.

“Who else do you expect to do that?”

“ Naairah, you should show me some respect. I am not coming to stay here like your house help but as a wife.”

“ I show you some respect but you never seems to notice. I used to be rude too and the skill is not completely out of me, I just submerge it . It would not be okay if we unleash it on ourselves. I am ready for peace if you wish for the same.”

Baanah smirked.

“ Naairah my friend, if you feel so uncomfortable why not leave? Umm Aaliyah has the same parents with my father. He is her younger brother. I and Adnan are not just going to be a couple but we are cousins. What he feels right now is the aftermath of what you guys have shared. It is more of gratitude because I heard you were with him since he was nothing.
I like him for that. Never forget the ladies that helped you or took advantage of your poverty to get you. And having the good blood of our family, he never forgot that but know that there is a difference between love and gratitude.
We met in Dubai when he came with his mum. It was love at first sight. I never really liked black men. You rarely see a Saudi Arabian which is our root marry a black man. You could have Egyptians, and other Arab speaking girls do that but it is rare for us do that.
His father is black and that makes him black so you can see that it is love. But he was indebted to you. He had to pay you back by getting married to you. I saw how he used to stare at me,” she chuckled, “and when Umm Aaliyah told me that he was still interested in me, I knew our hearts met on the moon and what will be more interesting that having an everlasting bond with him, “she ran her hand on her tommy, “ having his children? You cannot have that and I sympathize with you. I know the pain of being a woman who can only drop in the toilet and fill up the soak away.
Maybe you and he are not compatible. Do you know if you leave and marry another man, you may have a child? I am saying this from the bottom of my heart. I am not forcing you to leave. I just want to avoid a situation that is inexorable. Just a piece of advice.”

Naairah was burning inside. And she burnt more when she talked about her bareness. She felt like bursting into tears, run to her room and cry but she did not want to give her the grace of ridiculing her.

“ Your hearts met on the moon, if it is true they met, ours met on a star. Moon is so close compared to the star. The heart you think you met on the moon was two hearts that merged from the star. His and mine. I may not have a child but thank God it is not a result of a reckless life I lived in the past and he did not marry me just to breed. I guess that is your only duty here, brought to breed. If not for religion, it would have been just on contract bases.
Thank you for advising me to leave but I will wait until it is obvious that I am not wanted not now that I am still his only wife and the queen of his heart. If anyone is to leave, it is you who has not gotten the chance to feel his love but I will not ask you to leave because you are here to produce a child for them.
I said them because my Hayati did not demand for your service. I pray after that, if you don’t find love you leave and find someone who would appreciate you and love you not just a baby producing machine.
Thank you for bringing someone to teach me how to cook but it will only be fair that I return the gesture. I will send for Hauwa to come and teach you Hausa food too. But for now, let her stay and cook for herself. I am not ready to learn now…..”

Baanah could not take it anymore. Did she just refer to her as someone who was only here to breed? Making her look so worthless and unwanted! Who the hell did she think she was? How dare she talk to her in such a manner?
This was an insult to her personality. Oh no! She could not stop the tears anymore, and she began to tremble, her teeth chattering while she her hands turned into claws.
She let out a loud yell and then rushed and picked up a flower vase. Before Naairah could make a move, she slammed it on her head and the vase broke. Naairah shrieked and felt something drift out of her. She stopped thinking, seeing and dropped on the ground.
Baanah looked at Aisha who seemed terrified. Baanah smiled.

“ I got it under control.”

Three days after Mason and Adnan talked on phone for the first time, Adnan received a pack of data through his E-mail. They were coded messages, with pieces of information on the level of Evolution reached and what was expected of him.
Mason sent this after confirming that that Addy was a fraud from headquarters. He had not met Adnan but he felt only someone like him could reach his phone without authorization.

Adnan had studied the data and realized that these people were crazy. What the hell did they need these for? They were trying to make bio-drones. Then he sensed something.
Now they had gone far, made a success of most of the enhancement processes. They introduced a chemical which was induced subcutaneously to make the skin thicker, without affecting the cells. The ear drums were enhanced for more efficient hearing.
These bio-drones were made not to get tired.

What they needed was the enhanced intelligence making them bio-computers. They could not get a formula to manipulate the DNA. It seemed there was more to it.
Adnan had set to work. Only Naairah knew his secret laboratory was in a basement. Adnan was constantly into research, writing books so his knowledge would not waste when he was gone. But some things were better left as secrets.
He did not want to take part of the so called evolution but he kept thinking of the children. He could not let them die and who knew how many more children would be abducted if they succeeded? And it was going to be a continuous project.

Adnan, being a savant, was able to develop a formula within one week but he was not going to give it to them. He told Mason that what he had was a trial sample and needed to be there to work with the DNA expert.
To buy time, he gave them 0.00001 gram of the chemical which could only be administered to twelve people.
Mason sent for it. Adnan had sent one of his boys to Ghana, and told Mason to send someone there.
They were to meet in Secondi-Takoradi. The chemical was given to Mason’s agent without meeting physically. Adnan did not want to endanger his family. Mason must not know how to reach him. The chemical was taken to Mason.

He did not wait for Adnan. The DNA expert could administer it. If it worked, then there will be mass production. Welcome to The Evolution: a new world!
Now he called Adnan. There was a development. Adnan had to come to the States quick or else the children would be gone.

Adnan had just ended the call from Mason when he heard Baanah scream. What was wrong? He rushed out of the room and had barely taken three steps when he heard Naairah shriek. What!
He descended the steps, jumping over steps and landed with an alacrity that showed that he was physically trained. He rushed to the room was to find Aisha crying and wailing. Naairah was lying motionless on the floor, not moving an inch and she seemed not to be breathing.
Next to her was Baanah who also lay motionless. There were pieces of broken flower vases.

Ya Salam!

What the hell was this? What happened?

“What happened?”

“ Your wife hit her and she hit her back before they both fell to the ground. They all look dead.”

Adnan ran out to call the security man. There was an emergency.

“Why are you insulting me?” Hameeda asked with a wrinkled forehead.

“ Lawal is not here to save you now, is he?” She said with a smirk. “ You met me in this house, I am his first wife….I mean second first wife or present first wife….whatever, it makes sense to me. You are going to tell Lawal to get me back my room and kitchen….”

“I did not make him do that. I was not in this house when he took the decision. You should discuss that with him as the second first wife….or however you put it. I do not interfere in your affairs so please excuse me….”

This was the chance Sa'ima was looking for. She took swift steps and slapped Hameeda on the face. Sa'ima imagined stars, with buzzing sounds. Sa'ima held her clothes and tugged before applying a great force to tear it down before she slammed her fist on the girl.
Hameeda yelled and fell to the ground.

Sa'ima ran to the dining and carried a chair and came for her. Hameeda saw this and rushed on her feet before breaking into a run. Sa'ima flung the chair, it moved transnationally until a crashing sound told her that the TV was down and broken.
Hameeda ran into her room and locked the door.

“ Come out here you bastard! You don’t know who I am.” Sa'ima shouted, her chest heaving, her eyes thin and vicious. “ Come out before I break the door. You will learn to mind your business. You cannot come and steal my hard earned husband just like that without a fight and by fight I mean physical brawl. Nadia did it but where is she today? I chased her away.
Small girl like you are! I said come out her. Come and kneel down and raise up your hands! I will break the door!” She started banging at the door violently. “Come out and you dare not call anyone you coward!”

She was banging at the door. She sent a heavy punch at the door but found her hand sweeping through the air as the door was swung open and she missed the door.
Hameeda sent a straight punch which hit Sa'ima on the left breast.
She thought her breast had burst.
Hameeda had changed into a jeans pants and thick shirt. She sent her fingers and scratched Sa'ima on the face, roaring like a tigress.

A serious fight broke. Sa'ima was physically stronger than Hameeda but there was something she never knew about the slim girl. She could fight for hours and would never stop even if the opponent was stronger.
This was one of the reasons she was feared by girls in her secondary school days. You will beat her and start running because she would never let go, she would attack until you were tired and at the end do something savage that might send you to hospital.

Sa'ima discovered this too late.

Hameeda’s roaring , pugnaciousness, wild attack and doggedness sent shivers into Sa'ima. It became worse when Hameeda ran to the front door and locked the door, removed the key and flung it away.

Tab!

Sa'ima was like, “ na shiga uku yau (I am in trouble),’ in her mind. She had bit more than she could chew.

“ But you started it.” Sa'ima said, moving back, “ I did not want to fight you.”

“We have started already and we would not stop until one of us is down. If you don’t take me down, I will take you down.”

“ I am just pitying you.”

“Do not pity me.” Hameeda said. “ I want to die.”

She rushed Sa'ima who was intimidated and moved behind a three sitter sofa, making a barrier between them.

“ I don’t want to fight you.” She said. “ What if I injure you. It is not good islamically.”

Hameeda jump over the sofa but Sa'ima ran away. Hameeda chased her, carried a stool and flung it. It hit Sa'ima on the back but she still made it into her room but could not lock the door when Hameeda forced the door open and another fight broke out in there.
Sa'ima was stronger but she was tired and could barely raise a fist. She was breathing hard. Hameeda kept punching her randomly, while Sa'ima began to scream. It was by chance she pushed Hameeda away and ran out, shouting for help, calling on the gate keeper .

The gate keeper who heard the violent clash had since called Lawal who rushed down home. He met the door locked. He had a spare key, he unlocked the door and went in but he was unlucky.
A stray metal flung by Hameeda accidentally met him on the head and he fell down, passing out at once. That brought the end of the fight that day and they both began to pour water on him. He resuscitated after a few minutes and the first image that came to his mind was Nadia.

Had he known.
