Primary and secondary school teachers in Rivers State have pleaded with the state government to pay the salary arrears of its members. Classroom The Rivers State wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, also urged the state government to fulfill its promises to teachers. The statement reads: “Let me say it loud that the
Nigeria Union of Teachers, Rivers State wing still has teeth to bite and should not be taken for granted or pushed to the wall. “How come teachers will be begging for promotion and other staturory rights since 2009? “The other demands of the union include financial implementation of verified promotions of teachers for 2009 and 2010, payment of outstanding salaries of February and March 2016 to affected teachers, payment of rural area allowance to teachers, the release of promotion letters for 2011, 20112 and 2013 teachers under the senior secondary schools board and payment of pensions and gratuities to retired teachers.’’

It's a welcome development,
1. More than 5 years no promotion.
2. No yearly increment of steps.
3. March and February 2016 arrears salary not forth coming.
4. 2013 arrear salary seems to have enter voicemail.
That's very bad.

Breaking: We never agreed on N30,000 Minimum Wage – FG ON OCTOBER 10, 20181:55 PMIN
NEWSCOMMENTS By Johnbosco Agbakwuru ABUJA—
THE Federal Government has denied the report that it agreed to pay N30,000 as the new minimum wage. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige stated this while briefing State House correspondents after the weekly Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja. Ngige The Minister said that though the organised labour and the private sector have agreed on N30,000, some groups within the private sector have rejected the N30,000 and proposed N25,000 which was the proposed figure by the Federal Government. He said that negotiation was ongoing, adding that the cardinal principle of wage fixing under the International Labour Organisation, ILO, was the capacity to pay. He also said that the State Governors were still insisting on N20,000. Details later

FG proposes N24,000 minimum wage
By Abisola Olasupo
10 October 2018 | 3:21 pm

Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment.

The Nigerian Government has proposed N24,000 as the new minimum wage for Federal civil servants.
This is coming a few days after the Nigeria Labour Congress suspended its warning strike which was observed in part across the country.

The NLC had initially proposed a N50,000 minimum wage for workers, a move opposed by many state governors, many of whom are unable to regularly pay the current N18,000 minimum wage.

However, the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, has stated the federal government’s proposal on Wednesday while briefing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting.

Ngige while stating the government resolute debunked the media reports quoting the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, saying that the tripartite committee discussing the demand for the new minimum wage has agreed to increase it from the current N19,200 to N30,000.

“Such information is not true,” Ngige said.

The minister further stated that when the committee reconvened on October 5, after the NLC had called off its nationwide strike, “ the organised labour came down to N30,000, the organised private sector came down to N25,000.”

He also noted that the federal government had to consult with the 36 state governors. After the consultations, he said, the federal government proposed N24,000 while governors proposed N20,000.

Consultations and negotiations are ongoing, the minister said.

These people are not serious, upon small #30,000 they refused. Please NLC should activate indefinitely strike if federal refuses to go by little #30,000.

Just in Rivers state PDP convention the presidential candidates pay as high as 10 thousand dollar (#3.6 million) with minimum of 1 thousand dollar (#360,000) per a delegate, times numbers of delegate.
Senators goes home monthly with over #40 million which include their constituency project money, the project they never carried out.

Ministers, presidential aid goes home monthly with millions of naira, these people are taking the civil servants as nothing, please NLC should activate indefinitely strike.

It is really not possible as Inec has not said other wise,as long as the APC is going or had appealed the said case, all status quo will be maintained. For me I think magnus's case is dead on arrival as the high court in Rivers State lacks the jurisdiction to even hear or entertain the said matter,as long as it is a case involving Inec it should be the Federal high court that is sadoed with the responsibility to entertain the matter. Can any one especially jennifasam, show me where this ruling BARRED APC from fielding candidates...

Justice Chiwendu Nworgu of the High Court in Port Harcourt has made a consequential order nullifying all actions taken by the Ojukaye Flag Amachree led All Progressives Congress in Rivers state.

Justice Nworgu ordered that the nomination and subsequent election of candidates for the Governorship seat and all elective positions in the APC in the State was null, void and of no effect.

The judge in an elaborate judgement also gave an order restraining the National Leadership of the APC from recognizing the results of the May 12, 19, 20 and 21, 2018 congresses that produced Ojukaye.

He said Ibrahim Umah and twenty-two other aggrieved members of the APC were denied their constitutional rights to participate in the congresses.

He added that the congresses were done against the Electoral Act, Article 21 of the APC Constitution and guidelines of the party for the congresses.

Reacting to the judgement, Prince Azundah who represents the APC in the matter said further action will be taken against the judgment.

“We have said it before that the Judge does not have jurisdiction over this matter. The judgement is a nullifying.

Meanwhile, Counsel to Ibrahim Umah and other applicants, Henry Bello commended the court for the verdict.

Justice Chiwendu Nworgu, however, delivered the judgement against all odds.

This was according to the Judge who said there were lots of bombardment to stop the judgement.

Justice Nworgu who referred to the attack on the Rivers state Judiciary in May, said he was confronted with four petitions to the National Judicial Council challenging his integrity to hear the matter.

He also said the perpetual injunction obtained by the Ojukaye Flag Amachree-led APC from a Federal High Court in Abuja was an insult on his court because both courts were of coordinate jurisdiction.

He also went ahead to slam Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Lateef Fagbemi whom he accused of taking over the APC matter without being briefed by the Head Legal Services of the APC, Tade Oguntade.

Justice Nworgu said the attitude of the APC was a bad sign and an evil omen to the development of the country.

Ibrahim Umah and the twenty-two other aggrieved members of the APC belong to the Senator

Good observation. NUT zonal elections are coming up next week. If you know delegates from your various schools, kindly advise them to vote wisely. Moreover, given the fact that the present NUT Executive in the state are just a bunch of lap dogs of the Rivers State Governor, it's high time we the 2013 set of teachers got involved in NUT affairs. Just imagine the illicit deductions made from our meagre salaries in the name of NUT dues, and yet the bunch of lazy NUT leaders can't effectively represent the overall interest of teachers' welfare.

The time is now.

Civil servants and pensioners in Ondo State on Tuesday protested against the alleged refusal of the state government to pay their salaries and allowances from the Paris Club refund.
The pensioners accused the state government of not paying four months pensions, while some of them alleged that the government had been deducting their pension illegally since 2013.
Similarly, the state workers, comprising members of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress accused the state government of withholding and planning to divert the Paris Club refund to a fixed bank account.
The protesters marched to the governor’s office in Alagbaka, Akure, singing anti-government songs and blocked the entrance gate of the governor’s office, preventing workers from going into the premises for several hours.
Speaking on behalf of the pensioners, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Chief Rapheal Adetuwo, said the government owed the pensioners about N43bn from 2012 till date, adding that many members of the NUP had died of hunger.
He said “If President Buhari saw salaries and pensions as means of livelihood and if he rightly dole out Paris Club refund to state governors to enhance the immediate payment of salaries and pensions, such money should be used for the purpose.
“We have to embark on this protest to let the public know our plight. We can’t continue to keep quiet; the outstanding gratuities are getting too much, government must do something about it. “
In the same vein, the NLC Chairman in the state, Tayo Ogunleye, said the government had failed to pay the outstanding salaries and pensions of workers and pensioners as directed by the Federal Government.
Ogunleye said, “The Paris Club refund was released by the Federal Government solely for the payment of arrears of salaries and pensions. No more, no less”.
Also, the state TUC Chairman, Soladoye Ekundayo, said it was only the Ondo State Government that had refused to address its citizenry on the refund despite repeated demands by labour leaders.
He said “It is disheartening to note that while other states have disbursed their refund according to the directive of the Federal Government, Ondo State Government pretends not to have received it
“It is a bitter truth that the state government in connivance with the Office of the Accountant General has placed the Paris Club refund in a private interest-yielding account in one of the banks for the reasons best known to them.”
The workers threatened to resume at the entrance of the state secretariat office on daily basis until the government settled the accumulated salaries and pensions’ arrears.
However, the state’s Head of Service, Mr Toyin Akinkuotu, while addressing the protesting workers, said the government would not hide anything from them, promising that all workers and pensioners would soon get their pay.
He told the workers that the Governor Rotimi Akeredolu-led administration had not owed salary since inception, stressing that the workers were paid as and when due and letters of 2018 promotion exercise had been issued to worker that were due for promotion.

New minimum wage: Labour to take final decision Thursday
The Organised Labour has said it will meet on Thursday, to take a final decision on the new national minimum wage for workers.
This follows the delay by the Federal Government to announce its figure.
Ayuba Wabba, President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), made this known in an interview with NAN on Wednesday in Abuja.
Recall that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, had said there was no agreement yet by the Tripartite Committee on the new national minimum wage figure in the country.
Wabba said that the struggle for a new minimum wage for workers was on course, saying that labour was proposing N30,000 as requested by the organised private sector.
“So, we as organised labour will be meeting tomorrow (Thursday) in Lagos after which we will brief newsmen on the outcome of our decision,” he added.

Industrial crisis appears imminent as governors have announced that they would not be able to afford the agreed national minimum wage.

Governors under the aegis of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), who met on Wednesday night in Abuja, said though they were not against the upward review of the national minimum wage, they lacked the ability to pay the proposed N24,000.

Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige had last week told reporters that while Labour unions were demanding N30,000 per month, Federal Government proposed N24,000 and state governors N20,000.

However, it is doubtful if the leadership of the labour unions would accept the N24, 000, which they claimed was “unilaterally” adopted by the Federal Government.

Indication to that effect emerged as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has summoned an emergency meeting for next week to take a decision.

Chairman of NGF and Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, who briefed journalists on the outcome of the meeting, disclosed that the governors also met with the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, who briefed them on how many states complied with the agreement signed to clear salary arrears.
