The groom should be grateful to God , the Father- in-law showed the kind of person he was before he went into the marriage else that marriage would have been hell. And the wife too no do well at all. smh

May God preserve us from unforeseen embarrassment.

Nah the father lost out here! He wasn't even happy that the father of the baby born by, probably not well trained daughter, is ready to accept the baby and daughter and make their relationship "legal". He is there getting angry over one useless meeting at odd time. Iranu! undecided

Sense fall on their family as a whole!

@ the bold print, which one is unforeseen embarrassment again?

whoever is here supporting this brash decision is indeed in need of a checkup.....and i really pray someting similar happen to y'all. If all the old man in question actually held onto in taking such conclusion is the aforementioned then i wish the daughter well....Rubbish of the highest order. The young man should just thank his stars he dodged a big big bullet

the disgrace is on the lady's family cause the tag will forever remain on her coupled with she already has a kid it will be very difficult to get over that shit the father should know better. i dont want to believe that is the reason as stated by the man but there is something fishy not revealed thats all

victorian:
Next time, he won't ignore family meeting called by the father in-law.

It's height of disrespect sha

At least he could have called the dad on phone before time of the meeting, if they reschedule the meeting or possibly brief him on phone. At least with such act, the father in-law will see the son In law, as well trained.
If any of my in-laws or even elder ones call me for a meeting and I can't make it? I always place a call to make them understand I won't be available then and can I briefed about it on phone? If the head says no, unless I come.. I will then request what if I make it later that day? It's that simple. The in-laws won't feel one is proud or disrespectful.

You have a shallow mind!!!

You are someone, who is born into a tribe, go to school into that tribe, marry into the tribe, live life within that tribe.

You are not exposed and may die in ignorance

It is showing clearly in your utterances.

I was born an Edo, went to school in Edo and Ibadan, married a very beautiful lady from Abeokuta (who was born in Ibadan), live in America.

Now you can see I am exposed to different cultures and not you, who live in a box!

Bro first off,my late mum was from delta state and also my best friend who I consider more of a brother than just bestie is from edo, same nigga will tell you to avoid people from edo,he's dad was killed by he's brother in law (long story for another day).I thank God for your exposure perhaps that's why you might be different from the rest of your clan, now I was born/brought up in Jos,lived in PH,Lagos,Abuja, accra,UK. So my dude I'm not just anyone spewing trash online.

The story said, "When asked why he took such a rash decision, the father, Mr Adugbe who is a native of Edo state, told the groom that he failed to honor a meeting he called for on Friday which should have preceded the wedding on Saturday."

The OP never asked any family member...

By the way, how can an OP ask an angry elder, "what happened?", instead of getting information from the people around him?

Well, if you read my opinion, I started by saying "Maybe", because I am not an authority on the goings-on in the family. But I am so sure there is more than meets the eye in this matter, so we must not cast aspersion on the bride's father or family.

The word 'Maybe' has rendered you points as mere assumptions & I hope you'd agree.

Back to the matter, so the bride's father called off the wedding coz of a meeting the groom failed to honour - is that reason tangible enough as to cancelling a wedding to which both families have committed time & resources?

I want to assume the 'meeting' is part of the customs but we as humans need to ask ourselves if 'customs are made for humans or humans for customs'. This is where Africans routinely get it wrong, we fail to adjust/adapt to changing times or accommodate differences - this attitude makes one rigid & stagnant.

In my honest opinion, the bride's father has questions to answer coz I struggle to understand what sort of information he might have had about the groom in the last hour which he couldn't find out in 5yrs these couple have been together, as insinuated by some posters here.

If what the Edo custom demands is for weddings to be cancelled coz a groom fails to attend/honour(of course not deliberately) a meeting, then it leaves many wondering what sort of people practise this barbaric customs.

So sad, but guy you should have honoured his invitation or call him even if you are too busy, that shows a responsible Son inlaw.
Didn't you read where he said he called his father in-law?

What's there to learn about barbaric culture and tradition or customs? Why waste time on frivolous bullshît when other humans are learning new science and technological innovation/inventions?

This is mere distraction of some sort that's upheld by weak-minded folks to keep people under a spell, it's absolute nonsense.

Her father no try at all, after spending fortune for the wedding, he had the zeal to counsel the wedding, no one will take the family serious.

the bride is the one who called off the wedding, she is using the father. women are not predictable.

A man is giving away his daughter to another man to take over her care, he calls for a father to son and you say you were busy I will do the same over and over again. The young dude deliberately skipped the Friday meeting. He thought he was wiser than the old man so he can do whatever he likes with his daughter. He wanted to play a fast one on the old man. Yeye boy angry

Just look at the dumb statement you just made: “traditional marriage is what the Bible recognize.” When did we start using bible, less than 100 years ago but suddenly that has become our tradition? Why are Africans so stupid? Why don't we have pride in our own things?

Stupidity is part of our genetic makeup...lolcheesy

What do you think could probably be the reason he 'deliberately skipped'(quoting your words) the meeting?

What most of you fail to realise is that we also have instances where the bride may need to seek the consent of the groom's family, especially when the groom's family members are so strong-willed.

I think if the table turns, this kind of bullshît will stop.

Although common stuff is groom's family seeking approval. smiley
of course it is both side, the grooms family can also reject the bride. what am saying is that parents must approve the marriage b4 anything.

I blame the groom for this. It looks like he did not inform the father-in-law that he could not honor the meeting.

The consequences can be...grin We will get there.
