Hello my dear nairalanders,

I will try to make this brief as possible, in this political and economic climate in Nigeria, many people are trying to emigrate to almost any other country, I totally understand that and actually support such decision, now let me inform you about Ireland, and probably help you make an informed decision.

Firstly, Ireland (Republic of Ireland) is not in the UK (United kingdom), or Great Britain, it's a country in its own right, might, independence.
As a Nigerian with only a Nigerian international passport, you will require visa to come to Ireland for almost any reason, and your Irish Visa is ONLY for Ireland, if you want to go anywhere near UK/Great Britain including Northern Ireland (Belfast), you will require a UK visa, and also a re-entry visa if you intend to go back to Ireland.

Secondly, Ireland is a relatively expensive country, rents are crazy, to stay in the capital city in Dublin, we are talking about €800-1500 for rent on average, do the math, 1 euro to naira is mostly 400 naira.
Other counties may be cheaper but nothing goes on there, the country is almost concentrated in Dublin (the capital city), the "jobs" "fun activities" and "infrastructure" , Counties like Cork, Galway, Kilkenny can slightly compare to Dublin.
Thousands of "CITIZENS" are Homeless, the sleep on the road side, or some council accommodation

Not just rent, the bus pass is expensive, trains are expensive (unless at a discounted rate with an Irish student ID card or for a minor <16), driving your own personal car is even more expensive, you may need an insurance cover worth over €3000 as a first time driver in Ireland, that is after passing the rigorous driving test process which can cost up to €520, lol

Jobs
THERE ARE NO MUCH JOBS IN IRELAND, as a Nigerian, I believe one of the main reasons of emigrating is for "greener pastures"
Ireland is a small country, which faced a massive economic meltdown 10 years ago, they have not fully recovered, and even the "good" available jobs are mostly reserved for people who don't need sponsorship for a work visa/Stamp 4/1/1G/4s/5/6, Eu citizens are considered first for any openings, then Americans (there are lots of them here grin), and any other "light/whiter" Immigrant, or any English sounding name before you. sad,
Am I saying Ireland is a Racist country, nope
The whole country is not racist, but some of the people hiring are grin grin, as usual most predominantly "white" country has problems with Racism/discrimination/bigotry, as most predominantly "black/dark" country has problems with poverty, tribalism, insecurity, Religion and stupidity like Nigeria

There are exceptions to this though, if you are a Doctor, nurse or have advanced certifications in Information computer and technology, you will have it easier to get a position, note a Doctor/Nurse not trained in an EU country or some few selected countries will need to take undergo some registration process to be able to practise in Ireland, which can cost up to €3000 and over

Racism/Job disparity
Ireland is relatively new to diversity/immigration especially from Africa, I hardly doubt that there are many 2nd generation Irish born individuals with African origin/ethnicity, what I am trying to say is that, like 20 years ago, there was possibly only 5 or no black people in counties like Carlow, Cavan.

Most African/south America/indian/pakistani work as Taxi drivers, Food service assistant (waiter, plate washer, kitchen cleaner), security (black panther) and in shops as cashiers, pizza/kebab shops, cleaners (with Polish people)
Others work as health care assistant, forget the fancy name, nothing fancy about the job, is what Nigerian people call "cleaning/washing dead body" lol
Actually, these are people who work in nursing homes, hospice, mental clinics, they help in taking care of old people, disabled people or special needs individuals

Don't get me wrong, there is dignity in labour, and actually some of these jobs/salaries maybe better than what some of them were used to back in their home countries, and this jobs are stepping stones to greater things, and I have seen wise people who made a good living from these jobs.
Irish companies, agencies rarely hire Africans, I know people will come here to start arguing with me, I am not going to respond!!
I am not an agent or have any special interest in this topic, I am just giving you guys a summary of what Ireland is like for an African Immigrant.

The "favorable" thing about Ireland is their immigration, it's less strict than USA, UK or Canada
Like it is relatively easier to get an Irish citizenship than a UK, USA citizenship, Please I never said getting a Irish citizenship or resident permit is so easy, I am just saying in comparison to USA and UK, it is easier.

Students in a Degree, Masters, PhD program may get 1 to 2 years work permit (Stamp 1G) on graduation, which you can use to work full-time as a dishwasher grin grin

Girls
Irish girls, the extremely fat obese rejected ones have the sad tendency to like black guys
The sexy in shape ones mostly don't give a f**k about you, unless the are so drunk and you happen to be in the same club/pub with them cheesy wink, and you are "approachable"
Note, I said drunk girls, if you like go f~~k, tomorrow they will say you raped them cheesy, black Nigerian immigrant tongue, your own don finish
dem no dey rush you anything, lol
your big black di$k no be for this country

Anyways, it still boils down to your game, if you are very good at it, you will get laid every day or week, or once in a year grin with a fat heavy dracula
There are eastern european, spanish, chinese and brazilian girls, lots of them, they mostly stick together and speak their respectively languages.
Or you look for an African girl, who will likely make you go broke before you can catch a glimpse of her pant cheesy cheesy
Most African girls are not even interested in you, the are looking for oyibo and papers cool

Irish guys
Most are cool, happy, fun
some are drunks, scums and weird, the hardly approach a black girl, not racism though, they are just not used to it, or have enough game, the don't get laid either too, lol. The are in the same predicament with African guys grin, the worst are Asian guys sad

Police/Garda
They are relatively cool, it's a laid back country, the don't have your time, if the come for you, you probably really fu##ed up.

So before you come here, evaluate, think, analyze.

This write up is based on personal observation, empirical evidence, brainstorming and interviews with wide range of involved parties.
I don't currently live in Ireland, don't send me Pms asking me random questions, I won't respond.

I love this.
Nigerian man no go still hear. They’ll say “it is your experience and not mine. Leave me to carve out my own destiny.”.
Most of what is written is true when compared to my time living in the UK.

Lol
People never tell you the true story, been an immigrant for a greater part of my life, I have seen things in different countries.
Most emigration isn't worth it, though this is subjective, some bank managers in Nigeria may prefer to relocate to New York just to be taxi driver

The difference is that the emoluments they get doing odd jobs could be a stepping stone to get a better life unlike the kind of life that the average Nigerian live.

About the girls and jobs, its not only applicable to Ireland but most of European countries.
You only get the fat obese ones, in Finland you get the fat or very old ones.
The only place they can give a fu.c.k about Africans that I know of is America (don’t know about UK or Australia) but only when they see you have a good job(skilled) or already successful.

The best way to enjoy living overseas is to work in a professional field. All these low-skilled occupations are not meant for the average educated African, they are meant for people who lack the brains to go to school. The immediate focus for any immigrant who chooses to go overseas should be to get into a professional occupation regardless of how long it takes, you will be rewarded in the end. Sadly, I have seen quite a lot of highly educated Africans engaging in low skilled jobs to make ends meet, some of them end up being stuck in the low skilled jobs all through their life. It's not uncommon in the UK, Canada, Germany etc to see African/Asian immigrants with a PhD driving taxis for a living.

They don't wanna drive taxis by choice, or clean up streets, but when the are not hired into the "professional field", that's the only alternative for survival.
The can't be waiting forever for a professional position, who is gonna pay their bills?

The discrimination is real bro, seen it first hand, most companies rather take a less qualified white person than an African immigrant, occasionally the take one or two coloured people for diversity purposes (awon equal opportunity employer) cheesy

You see that black and Asian face on the company's website, lol scammers

Basically, for those planning to emigrate to a developed western country, you can take elements of Nigeria along with you such as your food and ankara, isi agu, babanriga, West African English and other stuff, but the best thing you can do for yourself is to leave behind the Nigerian obsession with white-collar employment and the disdain for the blue-collar type.

The solution is simple. Work a few years in the unskilled job (we all did it), save as much as you can, and then go back to school and study a course that gets you into a professional occupation e.g medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, engineering. I would advise a new immigrant to look for the top 10 occupations in whatever country you are, and go back to school to get the qualifications needed for those roles.

Racism and discrimination has been existing for years and will continue to exist, it shouldn't be an excuse for an immigrant not to aspire to be the best. I'm yet to see a company hire an unskilled white man over a black doctor, or black pharmacist or black nurse. The racism that an unskilled black man experiences is quite different from that of a highly skilled middle class black man. The highly skilled black man will go home and wipe his tears with his crisp $£ at the end of every month.

Easy to say " save as much as you can, and then go back to school and study a course that gets you into a professional occupation e.g medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, engineering" but in reality is not that easy
Given a lot of variables, a career accountant aged 41 years with wife and kids, can't easily save up thousands of £€$ to get back to school and study to become a doctor. Which unskilled legal job will he do to save up loads of cash to support himself through college ?

And don't forget most times, immigrants spend years trying to sort out their immigration status in the country, and the can't necessarily take up some jobs or certain full-time position

I am in no way making excuses for any immigrant to have less aspirations, I am just saying that the have additional factors working against them, some jobs strictly hire citizens not even resident permit holders, and you took my statement about hiring "unskilled white person" out of context, firstly I never used the word "unskilled" I said "less qualified", I am not trying to be a smartas#, but those 2 words have totally different meanings, especially in the context of this topic

Now let me explain what I meant, most companies will hire a white citizen who had a second class lower degree and 3 years experience, than an African immigrant with a second class upper degree with 7 years experience, that's what I meant by hiring a less qualified white person. Never meant that the will hire a white crackhead to be doctor, instead of a qualified African doctor. There are hundreds of studies to support this, I am not just talking out of my a#s.

This has always been happening and it will continue to happen. My point is - there are a lot of immigrant professionals working in UK, Canada, US at the very top of their careers, these are the people that should be role models. How did they get there? What did they study? Which networks did they join? What choices can I make right now to get to where they are in their careers? However, rather than make these choices, the average immigrant who starts an unskilled job will think of getting married and raising a family simply due to cultural pressure. I have noticed that the singular act of raising a family whilst in an unskilled role severely diminishes your capacity to explore better job options.

I see a lot of Irish healthcare and engineering jobs being advertised in the UK, because there seems to be a skills deficit in Ireland. Ireland currently is one of the fastest growing economies in Europe. Ireland needs doctors, senior academics, nurses, pharmacists, dentist, engineers etc. An immigrant who is qualified in any of these areas will not struggle to get a job over there regardless of whatever racism there is. Racism is nothing compared to what a Nigerian who grew up in Nigeria has gone through.

. Claremont, I doubt you understand the kind of racism that goes on in the professional sphere in Europe. We had this argument with a colleague also. I applied for internship positions with my CV (same format, just different names, emails and phone numbers). I received 29 rejections in a space of 4 days while all 30 scheduled an interview with the one with the German name.

I am in Germany and it is pretty much the same. Thousands of Africans here even with German Masters & PhDs working low level cleaning and physical logistics jobs. I mean, seeing those who have been settled here for more than 20-30 years looking so haggardly is enough to discourage my continued residence in Europe.

I'm just waiting for the 2019 elections to be over and to receive my degree. Heaven knows I won't be here come June 2019.

Hope you know that many immigrants are already married with kids before the emigrate, making things more complex, you are looking at this issue from one angle, look at the big picture.
Yes many immigrants are on top of game, and many more are in unskilled profession, I have lived in Canada, UK, USA, Ireland, Germany and Australia to an extent, most of the highly sort after qualifications in this countries are exactly what you mentioned, but need I remind you that every immigrant can't be a doctor, nurse or engineer.

Ireland does not need any immigrant dentist as you may think, I happen to know a couple of African and Asian dentist who have found it extremely difficult to get a job. And I agree with you, Nigeria is a shithole, nothing works in Nigeria, I literally created a topic which I promised to reward 40k to anybody who can tell me any Government controlled agency working to efficiency.

Ireland needing heaven and earth does not mean the are willing to employ an african immigrant who qualifies for such role, I know many professionals (Engineers etc) doing unskilled jobs because the have not gotten a position, Be woke bro

Buhari and Atiku can burn for all I care. The reason I am waiting is just to see if there will be any brouhaha after the elections.

I'm only bothered about Security. Na to just find solar take console myself. Even if na 1.5KVA.

The thousands wey stay back for Germany. How are they faring. Most are into low-level Logistics jobs like Amazon or running from one temp agency to another. In all my sojourn in Europe, I have never met a Nigerian who could comfortably afford to rent a 3 bedroom with a car. Of what purpose is migration if I cannot live a better quality of life than the one I live back home.

Bros, I am not coming to search for job o. The one thing I am thankful of, is that Europe has exposed me to the many opportunities in Nigeria that I couldn't see before.

Interesting, would be happy if you can explain further (maybe in private)
I agree with everything you have said, though there are still Nigerians with even more than 3 bedroom and a car, wink
Some have even more than 1 house and car cool cool

though the are certainly in the minority

The minority must have been so small for me not to have met any smiley

Europe is not for people like you honestly, to live comfortably in Europe you have to be financially responsible, buying a car is not a necessity when you have good transport network system, renting 3 bedroom flat as a single person is just waste of money.

Car and bigger accommodation are necessary when you are married with kids
