Good post by the op, I have think some of the points you mentioned here can be applied to other western countries . Nigerians should stop with this group thinking mentality, learn to think for yourself and research things for yourself . Google is really your best friend.

Hello my dear nairalanders,

I will try to make this brief as possible, in this political and economic climate in Nigeria, many people are trying to emigrate to almost any other country, I totally understand that and actually support such decision, now let me inform you about Ireland, and probably help you make an informed decision.

Firstly, Ireland (Republic of Ireland) is not in the UK (United kingdom), or Great Britain, it's a country in its own right, might, independence.
As a Nigerian with only a Nigerian international passport, you will require visa to come to Ireland for almost any reason, and your Irish Visa is ONLY for Ireland, if you want to go anywhere near UK/Great Britain including Northern Ireland (Belfast), you will require a UK visa, and also a re-entry visa if you intend to go back to Ireland.

Secondly, Ireland is a relatively expensive country, rents are crazy, to stay in the capital city in Dublin, we are talking about €800-1500 for rent on average, do the math, 1 euro to naira is mostly 400 naira.
Other counties may be cheaper but nothing goes on there, the country is almost concentrated in Dublin (the capital city), the "jobs" "fun activities" and "infrastructure" , Counties like Cork, Galway, Kilkenny can slightly compare to Dublin.
Thousands of "CITIZENS" are Homeless, the sleep on the road side, or some council accommodation

Not just rent, the bus pass is expensive, trains are expensive (unless at a discounted rate with an Irish student ID card or for a minor <16), driving your own personal car is even more expensive, you may need an insurance cover worth over €3000 as a first time driver in Ireland, that is after passing the rigorous driving test process which can cost up to €520, lol

contd

Well, this could be a piece of advice to you or others. first you should get your information correct, stop misinforming others. Do more research and stop 'fake news'
Living in the west is all depend on the way your vision and the way build your career. it is all different from the way life is in 3rd world countries. stop comparing yourself to people living in your home country and start looking at the people in the countries where you reside. There is dignity in every job in the west. the so called menial jobs/unskilled job are not being created in so many third world countries. Hence people are migrating to other countries.
Also, your master/phd degreee is not so much important in build a career in so many profession, it is your career experience that is important and your eager to develop yourself in any field. Professional is not just when you work in a bank/office job. whatever, you do you are professional and you need to respect yourself for that.
You may reach your goals if you know how what you want and go for it.
Stop wanting to get rich quick to be like those who are taking advantage of unstable government.corruption/unstable economy your home country. you may never be rich like them. there is check and balances in the west.
Racism/nepotism/tribalism is everywhere in the world. Dont let it bring down, stay focus and know what you want.
Quality of living is what is important. Be happy in whatever you are doing.

Nice thread

Everything in life is about risk. A living in Nigeria is also another risk considering situation of things..joblessness, killings, insecurity, hopeless, crisis and so on.

The worst is the lack of way out and unseeming solution to situations raging the country. The hope for future and unborn child leads everyone to look for greener pastures outside there. Things are getting bad without hope here..those who know knows.

Pls, what advise do you have for someone planning to get student visa in Ireland with the hope of making a better leaving in future either in Ireland or cross to other country. Am talking of a family man with hope relocating family if everything works out later, at least to take his immediate family out of the current and unending crisis here.

Are you guys saying there has been our people out there successfully living a better life even at initial rough beginning. I need a matured advise please.

Wow. I just learnt a lot from this thread. Am planning to go to Norway for my undergraduate program. All this is happening so quickly. Deadline for submitting application into Nord University is 1st December. I don't have a passport yet. Am wondering if I get my passport before the end of this month and submit it to them. Can I still make it?

I had an experience with a canadian and American organisation, they were impressed with my CV and practically pleading with me to come work with them n wanted a chat with me and when I told them I was in Nigeria , you need to see the regret mail they american sent, the canadian was a little humane advising I find my way to canada.

Maybe when you told them you were Nigerian, they realized there would be too many immigration issues involved by hiring you.
Do you have an African or European sounding name? If you have an African sounding name then I would say they were interested in you in spite of your name as you yourself indicated they were pleading with you to work for them. I fail to see racism in your case

In any case, I completely agree with everything @Mcowubaba wrote on this thread about racism in the west.

Exactly, in this case, he may not not have enough qualifications for the job which include authorization to work in those countries. In the U.S getting employment sponsorship is very tough.

Hope you know that many immigrants are already married with kids before the emigrate, making things more complex, you are looking at this issue from one angle, look at the big picture.
Yes many immigrants are on top of game, and many more are in unskilled profession, I have lived in Canada, UK, USA, Ireland, Germany and Australia to an extent, most of the highly sort after qualifications in this countries are exactly what you mentioned, but need I remind you that every immigrant can't be a doctor, nurse or engineer.

About this " How did they get there? What did they study? Which networks did they join?" is a myopic question, what works for mr A must not work for mr B, why are we all not Bill Gates, Aliko Dangote, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Beyonce, Messi undecided undecided How did the get there ?, why are we not as rich, influential and successful as Tinubu

Don't you know people have different stories, talents and opportunities, it is easy to stay from your high horse and ask why a poor orphan in Mushim is not an aeronautical engineer.

This same stance and statement have been used by some Australian conservative right wingers, expecting every immigrant to either be a neurosurgeon or a highly multiple skilled genius.

Ireland does not need any immigrant dentist as you may think, I happen to know a couple of African and Asian dentist who have found it extremely difficult to get a job. Racism is a big issue, don't downplay it, that's actually one of the biggest issue for an immigrant, because it literally affects everything the do.

Bro, I aint suffering from persecution complex or victimization, I am not bragging, I think I have a good knowledge of what I am saying, I have lived literally my whole life in different western countries, I am a researcher and an extrovert, I have interacted with dozens of immigrants in different countries, and read extensively on this issue.
And I agree with you, Nigeria is a shithole, nothing works in Nigeria, I literally created a topic which I promised to reward 40k to anybody who can tell me any Government controlled agency working to efficiency.

Ireland needing heaven and earth does not mean the are willing to employ an african immigrant who qualifies for such role, I know many professionals (Engineers etc) doing unskilled jobs because the have not gotten a position, Be woke bro

when u luckily get a position the will use micro and macro aggression to frustrate you

You never sabi Oyibo people cheesy

brotherly you are 100% right and i am in ireland...i school in griffith and i can tell you..there isn't a single black staff in my school..academic or non academic...they ill use micro/macro aggression to frustrate you to the extent you might need therapy

My brother sitcom,

Please share your thoughts now,i know you also stay in Ireland. But my question is will all this suffering even my immediate boss that is earning close to 500k relocate to Canada and many more... If you think relocating is for you to have a sweet life then wake up from slumber , it is only for your kids to have as that is the reason 99% reason people relocate.... One of the big banks ED' s just move his family abroad,do you think it's money NO, it's for the future of the children my brother.....
My advice to our brothers that are planning to come back please make hast as Osibanjo is currently giving out N10,000 loan to individuals,N30,000 to entrepreneur ....3million jobs waiting untapped but your father must be a senator to get one. Nigeria is really flowing with milk and honey currently I think maybe because of the election next year... Waiting till next year maybe too late in terms of returning home....

Lol, fair enough Griffith college is a smaller institution, bigger ones like TCD, UCD, UCC and NUI Galway will surely have a couple of black staff, also be aware that the country is predominately white and at such there will surely be an underrepresentation of other races almost everywhere, is not really bad, is like expecting hundreds of Yoruba lecturers in Ebonyi state university..

About the girls, it is more complex than you think, they don't necessarily hate or detest black guys/men, Ireland has been basically a conservative laid back catholic country for the longest time, it's just recently getting really diverse, it will take more time for a certain level of integration to take place, for it to be a common and okay for many white Irish girls to be in relationships with men from other races.

Some may want it but societal pressure and family perspective may limit their desire, and as I have said earlier it still boils down to your game and swag, I still know a couple of guys with lovely "sexy, slim" Irish girlfriends or wives, but the are certainly in the minority
I aint tryna brag or form mr handsome or ladies man, but I have "mingled" with a few Irish girls kiss

But I totally get what you are saying, they all have this look of not giving a sh%t about you, they do that to their guys too cheesy, that's just Ireland for ya, unless you're in the pub or a friendly work/school/gym environment, the literally keep to themselves "while swiping tinder" grin grin
I would advise that you expand your horizon, integrate, occasionally hang out with non-Nigerian/African groups it naturally improves the game cheesy, finally always remember priorities first, I doubt yours is getting an Irish girlfriend (there are fat older ones mostly willing and waiting for some dark chocolate, that's a 2nd option, as one of my lads will say "hole na hole" lwkmd grin grin)
