Tinfoil:That's actually true, nothing racist about that comment. Look at the dullard President we have in Nigeria. He spent nearly 6 months of 2017 in a London hospital. |

Tinfoil:if it's all true, how bout the people investing back home? Are they aliens? U re all as$ lickers with inferiority complex. We have good hospitals in Africa, we have rich men who also invest at home. We also have politicians who go to local hospitals for treatment. Because one or two people or goes abroad to do their shiits doesn't mean every body tows the same part. 1 Like |

giles14:Rwanda is a success story. Good hospitals is not the same as good health care. There are countries mentioned here whose healthcare is not THAT better than Nigeria's. A country mentioned here 75% of its doctors are employed in the PRIVATE SECTOR . 2000 Nigerian trained doctors leave Nigeria YEARLY because of lack of employment but on the flip side Nigeria produces 2000 doctors yearly while a country mentioned here has about 50% VACANCY rate for doctors and 40% for nurses. Though there is room for expansion at local level (primary health care) state and federal run hospitals are not THAT bad. Nigerians going abroad for treatment has more to do with MENTALITY than lack of proper health care. 6 Likes |

iblawi: I might be wrong, though some Nigerians joined the army out of unemployment but most because it's a sign of prestige (to an extent) and wearing khaki makes them look cool. Though I agree with you most of them don't want to fight. All of them wanted to be posted to Lagos, Abuja or PH. 1 Like |

Dust up your designs for a long wheel-base Hornet and make a cheeky submission to DVS, eh? Hint: must fit into a Herc and be configurable for at least 6 variants, like the Hornet. 1 Like

DVS is looking at the above, whilst their sister companies in the form of a) Denel Land Systems has a proven LAV, the RG-32; and b) LMT produces the LM8 of which 80 were sold to Saudi Special Forces. All the more reason to merge Denel Vehicle Systems(DVS), Denel Land Systems(DLS), Denel Land Mobility Technologies(LMT), Denel Mechatronics, Denel Gear Ratio and perhaps Denel Mechem into one company, to streamline their product offerings and put a stop to this needless sub-optimal replication. PICS: some of the scattered, not entirely dissimilar vehicles produced by about 6 separate Denel companies which even an under-grad from a mediocre university would rationalise and fold into 1 company. 4 Likes

giles14:http://www.africanzeal.com/best-rated-hospitals-africa/ 1) it's a mentality issue. People always believe they'll find better healthcare abroad. 2) Most of the time you find that the best hospitals in Africa are more expensive than being treated abroad (+ air travel and accommodation) e.g a procedure might cost 2 million in a good hospital in Africa.. While in a place like India same procedure could cost 500k, so going abroad might actually save the guy 1m .. The solution to African healthcare is not about good doctors or good hospital... The whole system is broken right from the clinic/dispensary level.. If clinics/dispensaries at the village/street level can be well resources to serve and treat all the preventable diseases then the big hospitals at the district/regional/national level can be relieved and let to concentrate on research, diagnostic and complex procedures... But what happens in most African countries is hospitals at district/regional and even at National level (level 4 & 5 hospitals) are overwhelmed treating patients with common diseases that are supposed to be treated at a local dispensary near you. The good doctors don't like being misused, they leave public healthcare unsearchable of greener pastures in private or foreign hospitals out of reach for common folks. Not to forget the brain drain of specialists doctors. 5 Likes |

Out of all the many stalled Denel projects, these are the ones that I personally, would most like to see brought into production in the short term: 1) G7, towed and mobile, using existing NATO 105 ammo and not the proprietary ammo; 2) Bateleur UAV, obviously brought up-to-date and perhaps powered by the cheaper hydrogen fuel cells the CSIR developed with DARPA and our Department of Science and Technology funding; 3) An updated Mechem MC-90, a proper light reconnaissance car to replace the Eland, unlike the heavy Rooikat which can't be used in an expeditionary capacity. A mate at CSIR Defence has a spreadsheet containing almost 100 Denel products started and unfinished due to lack of funds, with almost 300 IP items which the company could commercialise from Ambulance services to Zero emission tools. A-Z, geddit? I've only just chosen the 3 out of many needs that I think merit urgent attention we planners identify in the current structure of the SANDF. Just Denel at which I'm looking at the moment; the broader SA defence industry could actually fulfill all the needs of our continent, cheaper and at the requisite performance or more, of the western and eastern suppliers. 1 Like

giles14: Sometimes I wonder if some of you have brain. Rwanda now have better hospital than Nigeria abi? When many of us complain about health sector, we are complaining about good hospital spread across the country or states and accessibility for everyone not that good hospital aren't available. I wonder if you have ever been in Rwanda to Prove this your claim. Do you even know how many doctors we roll out of our schools yearly? Or how many hospitals are available that we still claim not to be enough. Or health insurance scheme running is several states not to talk of the national level. I would agree if you say the health sector is not good enough but not comparing us to several small countries just achieving what we've achieved long ago. Hospital are over crowded, doctors are over worked, resources not enough, etc happen but doesn't mean we don't have good hospitals. If you have problem accessing or paying the high bills in some of these hospitals doesn't mean you should generalise your frustration. Use your head. 4 Likes |

Rwanda has a better health care than Nigeria hands down, no argument, but it's normal, countries with small population tend to have better health care than the more populous ones. Compare the Scandinavians, Luxembourg, Qatar, Brunei, UK e.t.c to US, india, and China. 2 Likes |

The G-7's main selling point is its range and the deadly PFF HE rounds. The modular charge system is essential to this. You could downgrade it ,but then you'd just be competing with the Nexter and BAE guns with the same specs. Those companies have a huge advantage over Denel as their governments can finance deals. The best bet for the G-7 would be to sell it to countries that do not already operate a 105mm. That way you can get past the "existing ammo supply" problem. You're also just talking about replacing the charges in inventory and not the rounds as G-7 was designed to be NATO 105mm ammo capable. An SP version integrated into a Patria AMV for example could also be an attractive product for countries wanting to go lighter without sacrificing much by replacing 155mm or 122mm d-30's with the G-7. Another option would be a shortened lightweight version to replace 120mm mortars for airborne units. You could outrange old 120mm tubes and have lighter ammo at the same time. Chop the barrel just enough to make it to 15-20km range. Kind of a modern version of the OTO Melara 105mm pack howitzer. Denel needs money to finish the project certs though. Until then they can't really sell it yet. frumentius:

I agree that the MC-90 should also be brought back to life. You could fit in a new power train and market it as a Toyota killer for COIN operations. One option would be to offer a COIN package to customers like Nigeria, Chad etc. You could have a MC-90/20/23 or mortar turret for cheap direct fires, a light protected mrap for infantry,a truck mounted 60/81/82mm mortar like the scorpion and a light recon/SF guntruck. Logistics and recovery can run on regular Toyota's with off road trailers. All would be based on a common COTS driveline like a standard Toyota or anything that's produced in the country your selling to. This would equip a "super light" COIN battle group that could stay in the feild much longer and be light enough to keep up with the enemy. Heavy equipment slows you down to much and leads to shorter operations due to your logistics footprint and the maintenance of things like t-55s compared to a diesel Hilux. Lighter forces have the advantage of providing these local far out communities with more permanent security and policing. Time and time again we see insurgent groups in Africa get chased of only to return to those areas and establish operations when the security forces leave. Most African countries should really consider getting rid of their heavy units equipped for conventional peer-peer warfare. If your neighbour does attack you with his 20 serviceable T-55's you could easily just stop him with a couple of SF units with Spikes or Javelins. No need to keep a expensive mechanised force with all the bells and whistles. Light units are also much more capable of providing policing in rural areas by embedding law enforcement officers for arresting and investigative functions that you really don't want soldiers to perform. Have a look at what the Russians are doing with their 30th Motorized Rifle Brigade. The lessons they learnt in Syria can easily be translated to Africa. Think defence has another good article on this concept from a western equipment perspective: https://www.thinkdefence.co.uk/light-strike-brigade/ https://russiandefpolicy.blog/tag/30-%D1%8F-%D0%BE%D0%BC%D1%81%D0%B1%D1%80/ https://www.veteranstoday.com/2017/08/09/lessons-of-syria-russia-creates-super-light-motorized-infantry/ 61mech: 3 Likes
