Happy new year.
Still await your feedback.

Vbabs:
Thanks for the prompt response.

Currently there is no error code. Last error code was throttle body position sensor. The sensor was replaced and check engine light went off.

Temperature gauge reads normally. After warm up the temperature gauge needle stays a little close to middle.

Happy new year sir.
What is the engine displacement of the BMW x3?

All the same, both are from the luxury car niche, both offer sporty drive experience, and both are practically useless when it comes to real off-road work demand
The FX35 is a heavier car, so expect a worse fuel economy compared with the x3.
Both have good and proven engines( if you are considering the X3 with a M54 engine), but expect some oil consumption with the Infiniti VQ engine at higher mileages.
Both require premium fuel
The BMW might cost you more maintenance wise as it ages. you might experience some electrical gremlins. The Infiniti is not too far off on this.
Both are ok cars, if you have a deep pocket.
Please ensure you perform comprehensive inspection and checks before you purchase.

Sorry for the late response sir.

Since it is a 2005, it is not equipped with 'drive by wire' (electronic throttle control) but instead has a cable controlled throttle body with idle air control valve.

My recommendation is that you remove both the idle air control valve and throttle body and thoroughly clean with carburetor cleaner, reinstall and perform an idle relearn procedure.

please do this and get back to us.

Dear MotorGuru,

My issue has to do with the transmission of a 2001 Rav4 that I just got. After purchase, I had my mechanic drain the transmission fluid inside and replace with Toyota Type T-IV. I decided to take it with me on the family Christmas trip and noticed that it wouldn't go beyond gear 3 (80km/hr at 3100rpm). Even when I fire up to 4000rpm, it still wouldn't engage gear 4. All through the trip, I left the speed at 80km/hr (3100rpm).

Apart from that issue, I noticed that the Reverse gear when engaged would sometimes give noticeable jerks and the accelerator depressed. Other times, it moves fine.

I'd like your opinion on what's going on and how to rectify same. Many thanks.

Sorry sir for the predicament.

I will seriously advise that you take the car for a diagnostic scan. It is very likely you have a defective ECU/ brainbox. This is a common issue with 2001 to 2003 Toyota rav4s. Driving the car like that will ultimately damage the gearbox mechanically. If after scanning, you have transmission related codes, then you will have to replace the brain box or repair it. Pls stop driving the car for now.

Hello sir, I got a Tokunbo Toyota 2003 Matrix with the check Engine light on . I was told it would go away after servicing . I serviced with recommended oil purchased from trusted source . Mobil 1 full synthetic . The light isn’t still off and I noticed when it is idling, there is a really slight vibration. I don’t have a scanner but I just want to know the possible causes till I get a competent mechanic shop to take it

From personal experience... it could be that the Throttle body is bad and also spark plugs will need to be change.. This is talking from experience.. And if you can't get a competent mechanic. I will advice you to check out Carquest / Radauto shop in Lekki.. It might cost a bit ,but at least you know that the work will be done properly. That is my own advice o

Hello Guru,

My honda 2002 is not selecting gear at all. What do I do? Can you recommend a gear expert based in Abuja?

Oga Guru abeg hear this my story. My mechanic installed a catalyst converter that has the inscription KIA on my Toyota 4runner limited, they even removed one of the oxygen sensors(the one before the catalyst) as a result of the ambiguous nature of the catalyst, now my engine is losing power and sometimes i perceive some funny odor from the engine or exhaust. Could it be as a result of the wrong catalyst or the absence of the oxygen or both? because i have been arguing with him and he has been insisting that any catalyst can work on any car and that the loss of power is as a result of a fault on my air flow meter. Please reply asap as your contribution will go a long way in helping me take the right step.

Auto guru, pleasen which of these will you advice a woman to purchase?

1) 2007 camry

2) 2006 corolla

3) 2005 Rav 4

It is going to be an everyday car. Going to the office dropping the children at school, going to market, church etc.

The basis of advice should be on:

1) reliability
2) availability of parts
3) fuel consumption
4) maintenance

2007 camry is listed first because thats the one she likes. But my concern is that it doesn't have enough ground clearance.

Please i need a candid advice.

The catalyst installed is not for your vehicle, pure and simple. What is happening now is that you now have high back-pressure in your exhaust system, that is cause your engine not to exhale properly( like in the case of a clogged catalyst). It is very likely that that catalyst is for a 4 cylinder engine, and your engine is a V6 at its minimum.

You are better off with no catalyst and oxygen sensor spacers( to fool the oxygen sensor that the catalyst is present). This set up you have now will eventually kill your engine.

P0010 means you have a problem with your Variable valve timing system. Check the the following:

1. Engine oil level
2. Engine oil condition ( when last did you change your oil?
3. if the 2 above checks out, Remove the VVT solenoid and clean it (pic attached)
4. Has the engine ever been worked on?(did they remove the Top cylinder) if yes, get a mech to check the timing chain position and tensioner

for P0172, i would advise you reslove the first code first.

They are all very good cars and quite reliable too. But they all serve different niches.
The 07 Camry , well you need to double check on that due to concerns of engine oil consumption (4 cyl) and Ac compressor failing, if you are buying the Toks.
If your concern is high ground clearance, than i suggest you stick with the 05 Rav4. It is a very good buy.

I'm planning to buy a Nissan Altima 2005 car. Is it a good car in terms of maintenance and fuel consumption?
