It a very big scam the country it self is not even ready for enginee, our university have no facilities to teach engineering .....I have a diploma in engineering and up till now I can not even figure what I gain in school because they was no practical to what we where be thought in school ...the people I pity most are mechanical engineering student because Nigerian are not ready for one single engineering course talkless of mechanical eng. For me am going to computer science I can't come and waist my time again the only way I can study engineering is when I have the chance to school outside of this country

Lol, I have met a lot of computer engineers who could not fix simple mother issues and I begin to wonder what they are being taught at the university.

Well, the reason why most organisations go for Indians and others is because we do a lot of trial and error in Nigeria, take our mechanics for example, in fact they will end up causing more damage to your car.

I learnt computer engineering in Nigeria and I can tell you that most of the jobs were trial and error.

After I finish learning, I had to learn more and guess who I went to? The Indians.
They will teach you the theory and practicals, they will teach you the right way of doing things.

I can tell you that I'm 100% better than before in advance Iaptop chip level repair, I remember asking one of my seniors back then some questions and he was like undecided I was just laughing.
The world is evolving and technology is evolving but Nigeria is still stagnant.

I quite agree with you Op.How can someone that studied biology become an operational tech in my company? Some electrical engineer graduates are marketers.I weep each time.Well, after your 5years of B.sc un Nigeria, move to Australia. There is a job for engineers there.
my point is exactly, we are making mockery of engineering profession, yet so many people will still defend it.

How do we progress in the country ?

you would need those thories someday. No knowledge is a waste. Talking of design, we see Nigerians who design cars but no encouragement to develop it further. Even here on nairaland we see people even mocking them, would Asians mock their brothers who are trying to engineer creative products? My argument is to defend the universities who you seem to blame for not doing enough but you forget that this is a problem of failure in leadership. The Asians who are designing the cars by innoson were living in the dark after the second world war. They understudied the americans, were able to learn technology and replicate same. Look at Innoson, can he send Nigerians to China to understudy and learn how to design cars? Of course he won't. He only cares about money and fame. So don't blame the universities but blame the political class.

Stop talking nonsense. China had useless universities like ours for decades and 60 million of them starved to DEATH. What changed the country is practical. And by that i mean this:

Before USA brought factories to China, a family earned the equivalent of $1 per year. So the chinese people were eager to work for $1-$5 per month. Sweet deal for Chinese.

By working in factories, designing things, welding, soldering, packaging... on actual, real products, many people of them got practical skills for building their own products.

Summary, many of these inventive chinese know absolutely NO THEORY as to why and how their stuff works. It's when their companies becomes BIG enough that they hire theorists to come help out. Heck, Chinese companies simply break open competing products, look for the parts and recreate it. Zero theory involved.

What we study here in Nigeria is simply historical engineering where ancient theories of the Soviet era is still seen in some of our curricula. Where some of our labs or workshops are mere artifacts museums.

Las las nah alternative to engineering we dey do for Nigeria.

Going elsewhere to study and return has not proven to be the solution. Many people return to be useless. The older generation lecturers where sent to choice institutions of learning abroad, but that did not solve the problem.

An engineering curriculum that teaches Africans that everything discovered (or discoverable) was by one white man or the other has a negative psychological effect on our ability to develop.

There is no civil engineering text book that teaches that it was Africans that built the pyramids of Egypt.

How can Pythagoras, who travelled from Greece to Africa to further his education turn out to be the discoverer of a theorem of a triangle, when the biggest known triangles where the basis of the Pyramids of Egypt, thousands of years before he came there to study?

The name "Chemistry" is derived from "Chem" or "Kermit" another ancient name for Africa. Why do all our chemistry text books, from Physical Chemistry to Organic Chemistry, teach that all discoveries where from white people?

algebra is from Al-jabr
alkaline is from Alkali (don't you have a friend called Alkali?)

It was Africans, called Moors (not Arabs)who crossed into Europe through Spain in AD 711 and established the first European universities. Fine, their language was Arabic and their religion had become Muslim. But the knowledge was African and not Arab.

Before we go abroad to study we should find out more about who we really are, so that we do not advance in self-rejection.

For over 2,000 years we have been transferring science & technology from Africa to Europe. No text book will tell us, because our schools are for the purpose of economic colonialism. If you are locally educated to produce Iron and steel and design cars, how will expatriates (or colonial master returnees) have the opportunity to come and pack your dollars?

Nigeria's Ajaokuta Steel Plant can produce the best Steel from our "sweet" Iron Ore in Itakpe, that is why it was masterminded not to be completed so that it does not disturb the "world market".

These are some key challenges facing the Nigerian engineering graduate.

Knowledge of Self is the starting point.

4. the university isn't a place for practical focused skill acquisition. Polytechnics and technical Colleges are.

5. The average Nigerian is delusional and expects too be spoonfed with great ideas and their implementations. As engineers, they give you a knowledge of engineering principles and it is left for you to use your imagination to create things out of the principles you have learnt. In accounting, student are taught its principles and nobody takes them to a real life accounting dept to work, It is up to you to figure out what goes in where as you work with those principles.

Just remove all the other points you have made...these two points are GOOD ENOUGH...!

read my article very well brother, when you go on internship, you work as a maintenance engineer. Nigeria graduate does nothing other than to ensure that machine run smoothly.. when they need engineers to modify existing design or change the system, these companies hire foreigners...
Most of the design team of innoson motors are Asians..

Nigeria system give us ABSOLUTELY ZERO chance to actually practise what we have learned. What is the point of acquiring so much theories if we are never going to use it. Isn't that a mockery of ourself?

... Or you work in a factory as machine operator/ supervisor. Engineering in Nigeria is truly a scam

Engineering undergraduates study old theories from Way past generation, that is of little relevance to modern engineering. The university system teach so many calculation, and almost nothing on how to apply these mathematics to solve real life problems.

Many of theories learned aren't useless jargon, since we arent taught how to praticalise most of those knowledge, 99.99% of all engineering graduate would have forgotten what they learned by the time they graduate.
We only remember what is useful to us, what help us get through, or things we do constantly. Everything else, our brain trashes it.

Its quiet disturbing Most of the engineering student only read to pass. Which makes one question, are we in school only to pass some paper? If so, modern technology would not have existed at all.
Our primary purpose of studying engineering is to apply scientific discoveries to solve practical problems in the society. But unfortunately the system only made us to study only for grade.
Without practicing what we learn our brain will eventually discard everything as useless

An average engineering graduate does not remember 90% of what he learned in five years, I tried to go through some of my jottings from 300l, i was suprised because it all seem strange to me.. i couldn't remember a thing from the calculations l did with my own hand. A friend of my who have have a very much good grade have the same experience.

Apart from the abstractions of studying engineering in nigeria, most of the curriculum is old, we spent so much time studying theories that should be thought as a mere history. No wonder there havent been any groundbreaking engineering achievement from Nigerian universities

Majority of the engineering jobs that involve applying engineering maneuver will be given to foreigners. Innoson motor employs foreigners to do All of its engineering design, our Nigerian graduate work as if they are
mere technician. Engineering graduate will never apply most of the theories they learn at school. lot of our graduate who are lucky to find job in engineering companies work as a maintenance engineer. Whenever they need new designs or innovation, they hire foreigners to do the job, this is quite sad in my opinion. They have made mockery of 5 years of lifes. Quite sad
I am a qualified and experienced engineer who studied in Nigeria for 5 years, did a 1 year masters overseas and I currently work overseas. The truth is that there's no difference between me and my colleagues who were born and who schooled abroad.

A lot of Nigerians harbour this defeatist idea that they only teach (useless) engineering principles in Nigerian universities and nothing more; this mindset also causes so many of us to lose confidence in ourselves and lose our self worth. I had this mentality also, but when I left the shores of Nigeria to work overseas, I got to realise that those so called 'useless' principles I was taught in my Nigerian university days is exactly what they teach people all over the world. Every other knowledge and skill you add to your portfolio is based on personal effort and proactiveness; you get to be a proper engineer, not by what you are taught in school, but rather by the experiences you gain on the job.

In summary, nobody is really taught to be an engineer in school, you are only taught principles; it is then left to you to make the best out of those principles.

When was the last time your lecturers took any continuing education class? It is a case of the blind leading the blind. Moreover, there are not enough industries to absorb the engineering graduates that the universities and polytechnics are churning out every year. Most of the engineers end up working as technicians.

The knowledge we get from electrical engineering is very practical, the problem is that you can't see materials to work with in making designs that will make you innovative as those in the western world (I made a foot detector foot match immediately I graduated, it was not pleasing to the yes,no material to work with no machinery for finishing),
In engineering you are supposed to be taught the basic principles and you as an engineer will think on what to invent with it,
Engineering is not meant to copy, as an average Nigerian engineer want it to be,
They prefer you teach then how the I iPhone X max was design and let them make it, rather than learn how telephone, integrated circutry, displays, cells, and design, allong with order basic needed knowledge,
That was why one richdad ask me to go and make robot rather than learning about circle, when the robot become faulty I will be lost in the ocean.
I don't see Nigeria improving in technology soon.
Why
(1) the supposed theorem we don't even understand it in in-depth
(2) that is the way the lecturer were taught.
(3) for the few engineer that understand it they don't have materials to implement it
In western world, there are a lot of industries.
Nothing stops a kid from going into one such industry to take a job as janitor (sweep and mop floor), from there he can be seeing what is going on in the industry. All those movies you watch that one kid will construct one kind machine in the basement or backyard or inside his room.... That is part 2.
When the kid is fully practically oriented, he has tools and knows how to connect and fabricate and can even go to the factory to do some kuru-kere work with the professional, then he he can go and study his Engineering.

If he applies to that company for job, they will take him because they already know he is practically oriented.
.
The bottom line here is: BE AN ENGINEER.
Stop expecting university to MAKE YOU an Engineer.

For someone who has put in over fifteen years practicing core engineering design and applied mathematical principles in solving a vast array of structural statics, dynamics ,impusive and geotechnic engineering problems, I completely disagree with the notion as presented in the opening remarks. I was trained in nigeria and Iv applied all I was taught as an undergraduate in the design of bridges, water retaining structures, slope stabilization, understanding of soil consolidation beneath foundations of high rise structures, modelling of finite elements in the undstanding of soil particle and pile interactions in STAAD spring selections etc iv used newton's finite divided difference methods in topographic survey to predict ground elevation on non-chainage points where i was to situate and design foundations for piperacks for proper levelling, iv thoroghly employed calculus in the calulation and simulation of irregular waves and current loads on shore protection and berthing structures by numerical idealization, applied lagrange interpolation polynomial methods in the design of Larssen sheet piles in order to determine the min depth of pile penetration for stability beneath proposed dredged points, applied bernouli's equations severally and various expressions for head losses in steady state pipeline flow on projects to determine pressure drops and pump sizing requirements, reynold's number for hydrocarbon fluid composition etc. The list is ENDLESS...I was trained in nigeria and by nigerian lecturers and there are brilliant nigerians trained in nigeria as well. What is lacking is the exposure and the inability of most lecturers to solve practical problems on one hand and bridge this glaring gap during lectures making it difficult for the students to see a correlation. But these are the same mathematical and engineering principles the russians and asians used and are using in the design of complicated weapon systems. The Iranians are following suit as iv interfaced with a number of them on projects. Fields such as partial differential equations and ordinary differential equations are EXTENSIVELY deployed in structural and mechanical engineering in the explanation of the behavior of sytems under static or dynamic.loading. flow tru soils, one dimensional consolidation and settlement prediction of soil strata, deflection of structural elements, buckling analysis and determination of effective lengths in steel designs etc are all mathematical and highly applicable in the field of engineering.

The Japanese, Koreans and Chinese did not learn about how some anicent Asian developed techniques the white men used. They went and did what we do...learned about the great scientific and engineering feats, and then did something we did not do...went home and replicated them

Whether a white man or a white alien invented them was not their business.

The reason why we are not developed here is simple

1.All of our graduates want to go and work in an office. Meanwhile the guy who founded one of the great Japanese firms that existed to day....enginerring graduate who started his ministry wink..by building a machine for a mine he was working for. It worked...and orders came in.

2.We are spending millions on subsides for the oil and power sector....which keeps those sectors from making profits...as the money paid just enables them to pay running costs...actual development they cannot do....and it is these sectors that provide the energy for our indistrial sector to grow. If you are just buying stuff without paying the trader his price...how do you expect the trader to grow his buisiness... Power has a cash gap of over N1 trillion, and our oil sector is so broke that they engage in sharp and corrupt practices to keep their head above water.

3.All of you Nigerians laugh at your technical people. You want your child to grow up and work in an office. You don't want him or her to go and work as a technican. Meanwhile...all those developed countries you admire were not built by office workers./clerks.

Let us face reality in this country. All those Japanese, Koreans, and Chinese that learned about how white people invented this and that....why didn't they get depressed about how whites were so intelligent? And you think the same white people do not look down on the Koreans, Japanese and Chinese before? Now they respect them because these people went in worked hard for it.

Nigerians...we want to be spoonfed with goodies. Innovation is alien to us.

Remember that this country already imports 90% of what we need, there isn't much demand for manufacturing. And as a result. Not much demand for Engineers to monitor to manufacturing.

But last las sha i know say i go dey alright because nor be only school person for take succeed for life

I don't have a problem with them teaching Fortran or some ancient language. Programming na programming. The issue is that our lecturers are empty - actors. 99% cannot create an app, write an automation script or a decent website - even if you held a gun to their heads.

As my dad frequently says, you can't give what you don't have.

As a result, they recycle stupid questions like:

Write a program to sort these items in alphabetical order, "salt, grain, money, buhari" - Why on earth should I do this? Most languages have sorting, encryption, graphics libraries in built. Teach me how to use them and I'll be able to be self employed or quickly get a job after school.

Programming is the simplest thing in the world to teach because all you need are the following:

A laptop or a desktop
Internet

If they can't teach this properly, is it engineering where they need expensive machines that they'll will?

The problem goes beyond the selfish and lazy attitude from students, it also extent to the selfish and lazy attitude of the whole society - politicians, lecturers, parents, everybody but a very select few.
Our educational system is designed towards passing exams and looking for administrative jobs. Forget the engineering tag, most Nigerian engineers are trained to be administrators, and hence search for banking and government jobs after graduation. The educational curriculum is not design to help solve problems within the society.
I remember in my youth days, my friend and I used to make simple short wave and FM radio circuits. When I discussed with an electronics and engineering graduate about the topic, he said I was speaking Greek. That they never really worked with simple transistors not to talk of logic gates.
Today, undergraduates have no excuse not to know how to apply theories to build practical things. The Internet has open up a whole new world. The pity is that student only know how to use the Internet to Facebook, social media and watch porn. During my time, I had to sleep in libraries to get valuable info on how things work.
Google Taylor Wilson. The boy learnt though the Internet how to build nuclear reactors and built his first reactor by age 15. He is a celebrity today at age 19. At 17 Obama offered him a job. He refused saying he would prefer to sell his knowledge and reactors to government instead of working for them. He never went to the university, meanwhile we have PHD engineering graduates carrying their certificates up and down looking for administrative jobs.

Oga Am not trying to defend the incompetence of the Nigerian System, But Taylor's dad owns a coca cola bottling plant & he was given a whole standard laboratory alone to conduct his experiment.
where would an average Nigerian engineer get such privilege

1. To start with, Engineering is largely design oriented and not building or development as people like to claim.

2. The Nigerian University system is set up to produce research focused or academic focused graduates and most practical Knowledge we ignorantly ask for from the university system is suppose to be acquired in polytechnics and Tech Colleges.

3. Your lecturers too were taught theories and don't expect them to teach you practicals even if they put in extra effort to get the practical knowledge they posses themselves.

4. the university isn't a place for practical focused skill acquisition.

It's like u giving excuse for Mediocrity.....
I'm not sure ur write up apply to engineering students abroad....
There is something called application of knowledge and this is the key to innovation and research........
The above is where nigerian universities are failing....
Medical schools don't just teach theory but lay extreme emphasis on knowledge application....
If a student doctor fails the clinical exam, he's repeating the whole exam, irrespective of his score in theory even if it's 100%....
That's why nigerian doctors can function n adapt easily when they practice abroad....
Why can't we apply same principle to engineering course....
In fact m, all othet programs in our university....
I remember, I once asked a 500L final year agriculture economics student what she knows about commodity trading....
She had no idea, told me that will be their last topic in the semester!!!!
She didn't even know the function of the commodity market.....
I met a 400L microbiology student who had never looked inside a microscope.....
Abstract learning is killing us.....
And if we talk am now, some will say Nigerians are smart, therefore they don't need practical....

This guy is making a lot sense, engineering falls within the scope of research and applied science, you're suppose to use it to identify problems and also create applicable solutions to the problems or modify existing problem solving mechanism.

Even me that studied social science felt like I have been scammed, almost everything I was thought never showed up since I graduated and started practicing but the case is different with the knowledge I acquired at a skill acquisition center.

got admitted into federal uni in 2013 to study my dream course (engineering)
. Was best in department after first yr .
Found out i was scammed in second yr.
My high school lab was better than our uni workshop.
My high school teachers better than our lecturers .
Dropped out in 2nd yr (2015) with my #20, 000 in savings.
was rejected by friends n family .
Today am happy with 6 figures monthly .

We put too much emphasis on STUDYING engineering and no emphasis on BEING an Engineer.
The university will use minimal equipment and cost top push you out and stamp BSc to paper and give you.
If you want BE an engineer, go and buy your tools and fabricate whatever by yourself. Buy your laptop and download your Software and solve some problems

Be good with yourself and at what you do. That is what will earn you money for your life
If you do later study Engineering in school, you will still come out and depend on that laptop and your personal tools to get things done.

The solution to No Employment is to MAKE employment.

Remember that this country already imports 90% of what we need, there isn't much demand for manufacturing. And as a result. Not much demand for Engineers to monitor to manufacturing.

You don't want to just be practicing Engineering.
What you want is to Earn money.
Well,nobody knows tomorrow
