vezycash:just imagine what you are spewing, where is the evidence that their knowledge was useless? Do you know that maths is the language of theories? Without maths how can their be any engineering? Go and look at the R& department of all the blue chip companies and tell them that they don't need maths or theories to produce anything they would call you a fool and idiot. Get education bro https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_science_and_technology_in_China |

eminemkayc:weldone sir I am impressed by your prowess and your writeup is inspiring, what you said is true for civil engineering but i have NEVER heard a mechanical engineers saying the same. VAST MAJORITY of Nigeria graduate will never go back to mth 201 or use those mathematical principle to solve anything. I never said they are useless Without the implementation of all these knowledge there is absolutely no need to fill up your head with it. If i will never develop any form of heat system, why spend years learning thermodynamics ? 1 Like |

RealBadBoy:instead of coming here to rain abuse, why not tell us what you have used your engineering theories to do What have you designed so far? Which theories have you applied to solve any practical problem? If you cannot give me a valid response to this Then its safe to assume that you are a big idiot 2 Likes |

Saintly01:U are the scam ursef & u are not a civil engineer. CIVIL engineering principles taught in Nigeria are same everywhere in the world. If u claim u are a civil engineer can u state first principle in design? Of course u can't, because u were flexing in school. Better go back and learn.. u are a lazy Nigerian. Engineer is nt road mechanic or brick layer oga.. u need those theories u are taught..... Alot of it |

femarse: I agree with you that Nigerian students have a lot to worry about. However, about the fake products thing - NO. Japan was the China of the world - i.e. they made fake, substandard products until Japan embraced the teachings of this guy Dr. W. Edwards Deming. Dr. Deming was an american who thought quality control. Americans were okay with their quality levels and didn't listen to him but the Japanese guys welcomed him with open arms and the result? Quality improved, costs dropped and Made in Japan became a symbol of quality. This man didn't teach them engineering. He didn't teach them how to make products. No. He taught them how to control quality of the products coming out of their factories. After Japs started kicking American companies butts, they went over to japan to learn from them. And there where Motorola learned its Six Sigma quality control methods. The same thing happens with china. It takes a while to copy something. Same way it takes a while for a barber, a tailor to learn how to make good clothing. China doesn't care about quality mainly because it increases costs of production. In fact, for factories producing high-cost items, their quality is awesome. Now, however, the chinese government has stepped in to promote made in china. It's all on the internet. Here's an intro to quality control: https://www.newcastlesys.com/blog/an-introduction-to-quality-control-in-manufacturing In summary. Quality products come from a dedication to improving manufacturing processes - things like testing components before use, using clean machines, raw materials... and not lack of theory. UPDATE I just read the excerpt of the book - Poorly Made in China Poorly Made in China reveals industry secrets, including the dangerous practice of quality fade—the DELIBERATE and secret habit of Chinese manufacturers to widen profit margins through the reduction of quality inputs. ... savvy Chinese suppliers feel they have little to lose by placing consumer safety at risk for the sake of greater profit. https://www.amazon.com/Poorly-Made-China-Insiders-Production/dp/0470928077 So there you have it. It's intentional - not theory, not their ability to produce quality goods. Just pure profit seeking. |

It's a scam. They promise to make you an Engineer: a professional well-trained to apply scientific principles, in innovative ways, to solve problems and promote sustainable development. They collect your money and waste your time (at least 5years) and make you a mediocre theorist (the theory they teach is outdated) and a clueless "Engineer" in title only. Like a roaring lion on paper. A paper tiger. Is it the fault of the Lecturers? Never! Engineering is expensive. Not fucking cheap like studying classics or philosophy. I'm a practicing Engineer and I've had the privilege to work with Americans, Europeans and Asians. The shocking truth is Engineering Training in the real sense of it exists only in few countries: United States, Germany, France, Japan and Russia. When you study engineering outside these countries, you will not get the real thing. Now, observe that some great European and Asian countries didn't even make my shortlist. So why are you expecting anything less than a scam in Nigeria? The truth is, our Universities have no business running an Engineering faculty and pretending to be carrying out research. Bogus research. Israel just crashed a 36billion naira spacecraft. And their Prime Minister promised to try again in the next 3years. That's Engineering research. Can we afford that? You never chop, you dey ask for Red Label. Engineering is fucking expensive. So all you'll get from a Nigerian (or any African) University is a mediocre degree at best. That's why you have to re-certify to practice outside Africa. If you are studying Engineering presently or planning to, just endure the rubbish you are being taught and try to graduate with 2:1. While studying the rubbish, hit the streets and get your hands dirty with practicals. Buy scrap machines, hack and reverse-engineer, set up a laboratory at home, try to design stuff, build systems, get your fingers burnt, burn down buildings in your experiments, refuse defeat, fail and try again and again and again until you succeed. That's how to become an ENGINEER! 6 Likes 1 Share |

Dothraki:I wonder how u gained admission to even read engineering. Engineering is not all about design u dimwit. Engineer design, maintain, construct, plan, supervise etc... Design is a bit shaky in Nigeria but believe me we still design. Don't sit in ur room to rubbish a profession basing from ur own laziness & inability to comprehend its principles. In abroad, u will be taught same thing we're taught here. Wen u get a job, u will laugh at ur post because ur school taught u the principles u will actually needed for the job but u were too busy chasing small girls around in school. |

CodeTemplar:I'm not at all into engineering. I do agree with your point on universities are focused on theory and not practical. But even so.... I would agree with the OP that basically an engineering graduate is nowhere near up to date with today's international best practices...... the basic reason why foreigners are employed. From my own observations... regarding buildings.... whatever branch of engineering that is... I noticed multi storeyed buildings being demolished ... and erected. The ones built in the earlier part of the 1900's.... were framed in iron... top to bottom... iron beams...uprights ..etc... that was the engineering design of that time. Now... they frame maybe the first three storeys max in iron... then they be going up the next 50 plus floors.... no iron works. If the universities are not on this page.... and trying to move forward to the next... then the university programme is a waste of time.... stuck in the past. |

jesmond3945:Much of what is in the link you posted happened in the 7th and 17th century. Did you even read it? I wrote about how over 60 million people died of hunger in China (1958 – 1961) and you glossed over it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_famines_in_China And no, they weren't caused by Natural disasters but by their own government - a product of their own education system. jesmond3945: Any educated person who reads my comments will know that I'm well educated. RealBadBoy:you keep proving my point If i remember corectly, 80-90% of university curricula is focused on design, thats why we do so much heavy mathematics. I find it funny when you guys replace it with jargons like supervising, plan, etc Any fool can do that, you dont need university degree to plan or supervise. Our primary goal of going to school is to implement what we have learned You just proved me right Peace bro 1 Like |

eminemkayc:bro, I think you just mentioned what the problem is. They don't teach how theories can solve real life problems which is very important. It was recently I knew that differencial calculus is what is used to calculate how an airplane speed is reduced gradually in order not to cause a shock inside of the plane. Engineering students in Nigeria don't know stuffs like that and it's very bad. 1 Like |

Everybody is too busy cramming elect/elect calculations and principle than understanding it and when it is time to apply it, they barely know which principle goes in where. Blame the students more. Tooling and instrumentation is very important aspect of a civilisations. Africa is still using 17th century tools @ 21st century. We've been long denied access to tools and electricity. A cutlass will cultivate in 1 year what a tractor will cultivate in 1 hour. Nigeria with population of 200 millon hardly maintains the size of electricity a nuclear plant set for 200 thousand population in Europe. How do we move forward when we are on reverse gear? 1 Like 1 Share |

kirchofff:Nobody is suppose to be teaching you what theory is used for what practical. Reasons being: There are potentially thousands of practical application of that same theory in various scenarios. The school or lecturer will end up being biased or promoting some brands. For example a mechanical engr lecturer trying to illustrate something on Toyota vehicle or product may be seen as promoting Toyota at the expense of Kia, Nissan and Honda. Also not that brands tend to use same principles or theories in varying ways and that is what defines their products or brands. Think back to older Volvo models that are always noisy and fuel-efficient in a short time. |

Wow, you guys are great. I learned a great deal from this discussion. The guy that claimed the only subjects you can learn well in Nigerian universities are Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa cracked me up. He reminds me of RKRKYORUBA! After all these years the problems have not changed from this discussion. So it is not the problem of bad universities because even when Ibadan, Nsukka and Bello were well founded, we had this discussion. Engineering pionts to the problems in all fields. I must point out that our universities, even up to today have been able to produce undergrads that do exceptional well in all fields abroad. They are so hungry for change, they beat Africans they meet abroad. So what is the problem? Universities up to PhD levels are introduction to your field of interests. What you do with it is up to you. There is no job in the wide world that fits exactly into your field of study. Use methods you learn to structure your projects, sometimes you may even discard what you learn or drop out to capitalize on your ideas. While the distinction between universities and technical or politeychnics is true, Nigerians must learn how to discard it and roll up their sleeves. That mentality killed our development. What about Nigerians that are building helicopters, tricycles and cars from scraps? Most of them are not PhD holders and have never left the country. Yes, Chinese and Japanese copy, replicate and violate patent laws the same way Americans used to with Europeans. What is stopping Africans? The biggest laboratory in the world is Africa, our environment where nothing works! Top professors used to come to Oluloyo Hospital in the summer to study Tropical diseases. How many engineers have, Ajaokuta, Carter Bridge, Kainji Dam produced? Go to Eko Atlantic, foreign "experts" bocu. |
Re: Is Studying Engineering In Nigeria A Scam? by Originalsly: 2:27pm On Apr 14, 2019 |
CodeTemplar:That's a whole.other problem when students bring secondary school cramming mentality to university. At university one is supposed to jnderstand the principles so well that they should be striving to improve on them ... take them to a higher level instead of cramming them and spitting them right back out. No understanding...no innovations. That's really a major problem. |

Dothraki:i think your purpose of creating this thread is to rant. smh ,the guy you quoted is right ,polytechnics and colleges are the practical oriented institutions you can attend, ask a polytechnic student. I'm a student of the Federal Polytechnic Ede ,I'm studying computer science,I'm in nd1 .I can tell you I understand if not all the most important part of programming in qbasic and HTML ,we still in the first semester and we already did a lot of assignments about programming ,and when I say a lot I mean writing programs to perform mathematical calculations such as permutation ,combinations, quadratic formula etc. And getting good grades is good too,the problem is we focus too much on the questions like, how I'm going to get a job after school?,how will I be a able to sell my brain to get a fee that's not even worth it?,we need to change our perspectives about education ,we need to focus on what we can do to make life better. my lecturer taught me a little part of Programming, I did the rest with help from YouTube videos and like minded friends ,you can't be spoonfed all the things you need to know.. even those Nigerians who travelled abroad to study and ended up with good grades what have they contributed to life?,what have they invented ?, Nigerians study study to get good grades, study to be an employer and not become an employee in the future peace you talking about outdated stuffs ,well here in Federal polytechnic Ede we don't operate on outdated stuffs. even if you were taught outdated stuffs ,don't you understand the concept of self study? f***ck I'm exhausted #peace |

Go to most of Nigerian firm where engineering is practiced, we work mainly as maintenance engineer Why should we address polytechnic about that?. And what does college of education have to do with this? I find it funny when people like you claim smart/intelligent Are you telling me that those foreigners that do design for us have more sophisticated brain? Cos i am not understanding you at all |
