Where did you sleep for the first few days, how much did you pay ?

Some schools provide accommodation for student, thou it can be expensive but its usually good for a start for a few weeks if you run out of options.

Backpackers, they cost between $20-$35. Gets cheaper if you book longer, you need to ask for that in some cases

Some use shared accommodation like: https://flatmates.com.au or Gumtree. Be careful when booking this kinda accommodation. If possible report yourself to the police station so they know where you are staying. I do that when I travel to places I am new and not sure about

You can also ask friends on Nairaland who live in Aus to squat you for a while and make sure you leave according to your agreement with them[i]

What job(s) have you gotten to sustain yourself ?

Its usually hard to find a White-collar job on student visa.

There are plenty of blue-collar jobs or menial jobs out there. You just need to humble yourself and strive to find your way up. [/i]


Are you on scholarship(s) if yes tell us about it

Your school experiences .

They basically make you teach yourself. Meaning you have to research and research all the time

Your lecturers are they as a guide.

You can take some study leaves if you feel stressed

Lots of group assignment / projects which in turn means lots of brain storming. [i]

what are the price ranges of accommodation in Australia?

Thanks so much for your response. It is highly appreciated. I have some specific questions to ask:

1. How much would you advise one to come with to Australia in order to cater for expenses for the first few months before getting a job. (Note the person intends to lead a very humble life style in terms of spending)

Its always good to have a fee that will cover at least your first and second semester / trimester, that way you don't have to worry much on paying your tuition fees and school chasing you with DEBT COLLECTORS.

You also want to have enough money for accommodation and feeding for at least 3-4months.

Depending on where you decide to live you may need to have a car for easy transportation. You may be able to manage with train, bus, taxi services when you live in bigger cities like Sydney and Melboure, Brisbane. Some jobs too require you to have your personal car

2. What is the probability of getting a job within the first month of arriving in Australia (Blue collar jobs) and what type of blue collar jobs pay best
Australia believe in certificates. You need to have a certificate before you can serve BEER in a bar, you need one to become a Truck, bus driver, etc

For construction jobs, you need a white-card or blue-card depending on what they call it in the state you will be going to. Those certificate could span between 2days to 6months. I will advise you get a white card for a quick job as there are plenty of construction happening in Sydney and Melbourne i know well about. Register yourself with Work Agencies around your city and you will be called for jobs

3. What are the things one needs to know and do in order to quickly secure a job?

You need your own car,
You need to do a certificate while you are in Aus
You need to register yourself with as many work agencies as possible
Its advisable to get have a skill from Nigeria before arriving here i.e Tiling and Painting/interior decoration, Mechanic / Panel beating


4. Is there anything pertinent you think one should do here in Nigeria before coming to Australia as a student in order to get off to a not to difficult start on arrival?(E.g like learning a skill, learning to drive e.t.c)

Tiling

Carpentry
Air Condition repairs

Funny enough, the aforementioned skills can land you PR in Aus

There are a few criterias that influence rents; location, how new the property is, how many rooms in the house etc.
i.e. A one room studio apartment in the heart of Sydney may cost you $400-$600 a week while same studio in inner suburbs of Sydney would only cost $200-$300 even cheaper when you go Central Coast or Wollongong way.

Questions keep popping into my head as the date of my arrival in Australia gets closer. I'm feeling unprepared in terms of being armed with enough information.

I checked the accommodation link that WestAfrican sent. I kept on seeing the term "Bond". I wonder what that means.

Also, for someone who is going to be schooling in Wollongong but intends to stay and work in Sydney, which part of Sydney should such a person rent an apartment so as to ensure more proximity to Wollongong.

Again based on experience, what kind of accommodation would you advise those of us who are coming over to arrange for as students and what type should we avoid? We need your opinions on this our senior brothers and sisters.

Are there any other inherent procedural challenges with securing accommodation that we need to be aware of especially as new comers and how do we overcome them if any?
