You have to go back to school. Philosophy is not Greek, study Descartes and Socrates as much as you want. You understanding of the World will continue to be a misconception. You go study the pholosophy of Orunmila and Ifa Corpus and you will understand that Greece is not where knowledge started and finished.

Honestly, we have to start demarcating knowledge and only then can we start appreciating philosophy. I would have loved to hear something like: The Greatest Western Philosopher.. it is only in that sense that you students of Western Philosophy can talk about Descartes, Socrates and their likes...

If we are to talk about philosophy as a subject in ots philosophical sense. Not western oriented knowledge. I would not even compare Socrates with Orunmila. Orunmila was far more sophiticated... he would have sat Plato and Socrates down and thought them a lot.. his understanding cut across history, medicine, being, and whatnot.

Ifa's 16 binary is still out there today and has informed many western thinking and sciences including pholosophy. Aristotle gave us the best definition of Philosophy: The sum total assumption belief attitude and prejudice, which are partially inherited or partially acquired in the process of learning... When I was in school, I read more about Aristotle's theory in philosophy and it really helped me.

It's difficult to pick the overall greatest philosopher of all time. Picking an overall will underestimate the work of others. One of the weaknesses of man is his abhorence of contradictions and uncertainty while having a strong affinity for simplification and security. This weakness must have prompted the desire to pass all great philosophers through a 'sieve of greatness' inorder to determine the "greatest" so that the perceived "greatest" can be isolated for worship and devotion, while ignoring the complementary works of others. Such 'sieve of greatness', if at all can be made, will perpetually remain SUBJECTIVE and can only produce 'a desired greatest' and not the greatest in the real sense of it. That said.

From my personal subjective perspective, the following are the 'greatest' philosophers of all times. I consider them equal with no single message superior to the other but rather complementary:

1. Jesus: Even majority of the so called "Christians" don't understand the core teachings of Our Lord Jesus Christ. They prefer to worship him instead of living by his words. Jesus detested worship when he was alive. He encouraged obedience and practice of his teachings instead. What is Christ's core teaching? Love! [/b]Love is the most misunderstood word in the world. When you seek and truly understand the meaning of the word Love, you will understand why Jesus's core teaching is perhaps the greatest philosopy of all times and the hope of the world!

[b]2. Orunmila: When you study Ifa critically, you will understand that Orunmila is perhaps the wisest man to ever walk this earth. Compared to Jesus's IDEAL message on how to live your life ABUNDANTLY on earth (when kingdom of heaven is established on earth through love) while guaranteeing the best afterlife, Orunmila offers PRACTICAL and REALISTIC way of living your life ABUNDANTLY on earth while also guaranteeing the best afterlife. In other words, Jesus's philosophy focusses on COMMUNITY efforts (unconditional love) towards prospertity on earth while Orunmila's philosophy offers first INDIVIDUAL effort towards the individual's personal attainments and then how the individual integrates with others towards the realisation of ultimate desire of the the COMMUNITY.

3. Socrates: The Oracle of Delphi was always right in acient Greece. It confirmed Socrates as the wisest man in Greece. When Socrates was informed that Oracle of Delphi picked him as the wisest man in Greece, he laughed in disbelief. He responded by saying "Why will the Oracle pick me? I know nothing so I cannot be the wisest man in Greece" Then other philosphers became convinced that the Oracle is right for [i][b]"He who knows not and knows that he knows not is wise!". Socrates is the father of science that makes life easy today. Scientific thought process is originally referred to as "Socratic thinking". Socratic thinking dictates that we must never claim absolute knowledge. We must continue to doubt everything in order to remain open for higher knowledge. That is why scientist will tell you Aspirin is safe today and warn you not to take same drug tomorrow when higher knowledge is attained. That is why, in my subjective opinion, Socrates is the greatest of all philosophers.

The West have always been criminals from time immemorial, they stole all their knowledge from ancient Egypt yet known of them has ever acknowledged the contributions of ancient Egyptians philosophers.
So, many people don't know that Socrates and even Thales of Miletus who is said to be the father of Philosophy/Geometry schooled in Egypt(The Mystery School). Documents on Law, Medicine, philosophy etc were looted from Egypt after Alexander invaded Egypt.

They don't give credit to the ancient Egyptians because they're black Africans whose origin started from the south.. Ta Seti(Nubia)..
