Thanks Guys!

@physicall I really don't think i can afford JHU School of Medicine  but am actually giving their M.D/Ph.D program one last shot.

@cezeozue
, sorry to hear that, but make no mistake , UIUC is a Giant in Engineering.

The graduate engineering program at Illinois ranked 5th in the Best Graduate Schools issue of U.S. News and World Report (published recently-March 2011). After MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley and GATECH.

Caltech came in 7TH.

Ranked graduate engineering science specialties in UIUC  College of Engineering include the following:
•   7 – Aerospace/Aeronautical/Astronautical
•   1 – Biological/Agricultural
• 11 – Chemical
•   2 – Civil
•   4 – Computer Engineering
•   5 – Computer Science*
•   8 – Computer Science – Artificial Intelligence*
•   9 – Computer Science – Programming Language*
•   6 – Computer Science – Systems*
• 11 – Computer Science – Theory*
•   4 – Electrical/Electronic/Communications
•   3 – Environmental
• 17 – Industrial/Manufacturing
•   2 – Materials
•   6 – Mechanical
• 12 – Nuclear
•   9 – Physics*
•   2 – Physics – Condensed Matter*
• 10 – Physics – Nuclear*
•   8 – Physics – Quantum*

In fall 2010, a Wall Street Jourrnal study of the largest public and private companies, nonprofits and government agencies ranked the University and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign #3 for graduates best prepared and most able to succeed; Engineering ranked #4, Computer Science #9.

Engineering at Illinois is #1 on “The Most-Cited Institutions in Engineering, 1999-2009,” a list of the top 20 institutions worldwide with the highest total citations to research papers published in Thomson Reuters-indexed engineering journals from January 1, 1999 to October 31, 2009.

In 2009, Engineering at Illinois was ranked #3 in the “Top 100 World Universities in Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences” by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

It’s not a back up school… but they have been making moves for diversity which is why, given your stats, I am quite shocked they did not admit!

But take comfort that the MIT is interested in you and hope that others will come.

@tiana85

From what ETS says…
The new version will allow you to skip individual questions in a section, answer the others, then come back to address the unfinished portion. The computer will then score the section and modify the difficulty of the next part accordingly. The current computer-adaptive test adjusts the difficulty of each successive problem based on whether the previous one is answered correctly and does not allow you to return to previous questions.

• Writing: You'll still be asked to write two essays, but you can no longer choose the topic. The questions will also require "more focused" responses, according to Educational Testing Service (ETS), which administers the GRE.

• Math: The revised exam will feature fewer geometry problems and will test your ability to interpret data in real-world scenarios. One huge advantage or maybe disadvantage to some, There is now an on-screen calculator.

• Verbal: Expect to be tested more on reading comprehension. Some sections may require you to select multiple answers to be correct, or to highlight portions of reading passages in your response. In another break from the past, analogies and antonyms have been eliminated. This is one change I endorse. I have always viewed it as stupid to test vocabulary which no one will ever use in the real world

Scores will be adjusted, too, to range from 130 to 170 rather than 200 to 800 per section.
The revised GRE will completely replace the current version on August 1 (though the first scores will not be available until November). In that area, you’ll also have to decide how fast you need your scores.

@ceze,
bro, cheer up. I believe the best is just lurking around the corner, in no time u will see it unvail. U have put so much to this and the last time i checked , the law still has full effect ,that is, to every action, there is always an equal or opposite rxn. Bestest of luck,

@tiana,
you and i but know the answer to ur query, U know no one has attempted it and the last time i checked, thee indians have all filled up the date for the old pattern, so i wudn't b surprised if i see indians and chinese trooping to 9ja to fill up ourr rememering space, lol. But, the interesting thing is why re these smart nationals running away from this enigma?

Girl, from general experience, first experiments re nt really that auspicious. Ask ur self why gre is even goin an extra mile to offer a 50 percent rebate? Remember say the new gre questions, some questions get 2 to 3 answers , so if u peradventure select just one right answer,u know d rest.

Well, from the above claims, u may have come to the conclusion that am trying to dissuade you from the new kid on the block. But contrary to that, i just want the best for evry NLanders here ,including u. So take the one that work best for u. Just pls weigh both options .

Best of luck
ur colleague in da struggle, lol,

Does anyone know test centers in Lagos where i can take the GRE test and also for registration.
Re: Preparing for GRE by cezeozue: 3:38pm On Mar 21, 2011
@raphael: First Logic on Oba Akran, Ikeja. You can register online http://www.ets.org/gre/
Re: Preparing for GRE by tiana85(f): 3:39pm On Mar 21, 2011
First logic @ oba akran, ikeja
Re: Preparing for GRE by tiana85(f): 3:44pm On Mar 21, 2011
@ceze did u register online? I thot dat wasn't applicable to nigerian test takers
Re: Preparing for GRE by cezeozue: 3:47pm On Mar 21, 2011
I did. I don't know whether things have changed though. In any case, this was back in October 2010.

If I remember correctly, the registration went through smoothly but I vaguely remember having to use a UK address for some other stuff; probably additional score reports.
Re: Preparing for GRE by tiana85(f): 4:15pm On Mar 21, 2011
Cezeozue pls do u knw anyfin about subject tests? I'm to write d chemistry test for my admission. Tanx
Re: Preparing for GRE by cezeozue: 4:20pm On Mar 21, 2011
Honestly, I don't know much asides what's on ETS's site. I carefully avoided all programs that required subject tests; yeah, I'm lazy like that.
Re: Preparing for GRE by cezeozue: 4:21pm On Mar 21, 2011
What do you want to know exactly anyway?
Re: Preparing for GRE by tiana85(f): 4:26pm On Mar 21, 2011
Where I can write it and d cost. It's not administered here in nigeria. Tanx
Re: Preparing for GRE by cezeozue: 4:43pm On Mar 21, 2011
From http://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/gre_tclist.pdf. It seems there are centres in Benin and Lagos and from http://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/gre_pbtregform.pdf, it apparently costs $160
Re: Preparing for GRE by flopath(m): 6:30pm On Mar 21, 2011
I don't understand how this forum works again oh! I posted twice now and nothing comes up. all of a sudden i get this spam trash! anyway, how is life everyone! i'll if I can repost.
Re: Preparing for GRE by tiana85(f): 7:14pm On Mar 21, 2011
@cezeozue tanx, i guess i'll just call dem @ first logic, cos those centers u sent i've already checked dem out, dey r actually for paper based tests iand not subject. wen u visit d registration portal d option for nigeria is not available. tanx a bunch anywayz
Re: Preparing for GRE by cezeozue: 7:18pm On Mar 21, 2011
If I understand correctly, I believe the subject tests are paper based:

Paper-based Subject Tests are offered at test centers (PDF) worldwide.
http://www.ets.org/gre/subject/register/
Re: Preparing for GRE by tiana85(f): 7:36pm On Mar 21, 2011
yes yes, subject tests r paper based but unless i'm not doing it right, wen u try registering online, nigeria isnt in d list and i doubt if its becos online applicatns arent allowed in naija, cos u can actually register all d way to d end (inputing visa card details) for d other test types- paper and cbt. so i've come to d conclusion dat subject tests arent wrttten in naija unless someone has done it b4, precisely d reason y i asked in d 1st place. but u can always try it out, like i said maybe i'm not doing it right. cos i reali dont like d idea of havn to travel outside nigeria to write it sad
Re: Preparing for GRE by cezeozue: 7:41pm On Mar 21, 2011
Try it out? Heck no! Like I said earlier, I carefully avoided applying to programs that require the tests.

I suspect that the subject tests will be taken at the paper-based centres in Nigeria on the specified test dates. As for registering online, you know how Nigeria is naa, today they'll block ETS site, tomorrow it'll be amazon or Apple store. I suggest you explore other means of registration (mail, telephone etc). You could also give ETS a call and have them set you straight before you start running to buy a plane ticket.
Re: Preparing for GRE by tiana85(f): 8:00pm On Mar 21, 2011
i guess calln will be d best bet, i really dont like d idea of writting d subject test too, but i just want to play it safe, i studied ind. chem and i want to do my msc in chem eng. but i wasnt given admission in europe last year, deir reason being dat my first degree wasnt sufficient to undergo d course although i've gotten admission in about 3 other schs but cos of cash i culdnt go. so dis time around i want to apply to both chem eng. and chemistry majors, just to be on d safe side. smiley
Re: Preparing for GRE by GboyegaD(m): 11:54am On Mar 22, 2011
I gained admission last week to PhD in Applied Economics without funding because my GRE result was received late at the institution. However, I am waiting for some other schools I applied to.

Does anyone have an idea when Purdue University releases their Admission List?

Rejection 3: Penn State
Re: Preparing for GRE by tabarity: 5:06pm On Mar 22, 2011
^^ No mind them jo. PennState (as well as most public schools in Pennsylvania) is broke. They couldn't accept you simply because they don't have the funds available (I guess). AFAIK, PA schools recently experience a huge budget cut on education by the state gov't.
Again, you have the best already (MIT, Stanford). These are very prestigious schools o. Any news on funding yet?
Re: Preparing for GRE by cezeozue: 5:20pm On Mar 22, 2011
Well, I guess you are right about the PA budget cuts (its sufficient consolation anyways). I'm even more grateful to God now for the offers I got; I would have been crying some major tears by now. You know, I assumed that many of the schools would be easy to get into with my stats, especially when the initial offers started coming in. I'm now learning to take nothing for granted.

About funding, Stanford is quite out of the question; I should be rejecting both the Stanford and Wisconsin offers come early April. Funding looks likely for MIT but I have nothing on paper yet so I'm still praying but I think I will accept the offer. I'm just waiting for about 4 more decisions before I put any closure on the matter.

What of you tabarity?

Spot on bro. I guess that's why they haven't mailed me my admission letter yet. I won't be surprised if they rescind their decision. grin

@ cezeozue, keep your hopes high man. You will surely get more than you expect.
Re: Preparing for GRE by tabarity: 6:07pm On Mar 22, 2011
MS programs in private schools like Stanford are simply not for the poor/average. They are designed primarily to rake in money to supplement research funds in a little way. A few promising admitted MS guys do receive support (especially if some prof recognize they might be of great benefit to their research group). Seriously cezeozue, I wonder why Stanford and Wisconsin are not offering you some substantial financial aid, with your profile - it beats my imagination.
As for me, two admits so far: Delft and TAMU, both for MS petroleum, no funds yet. I really need prayers guys.

tiana85:

No. I am not currently employed, nor do I have any work experience. These are important requirements for nfp.
Re: Preparing for GRE by cezeozue: 6:25pm On Mar 22, 2011
Moreover, this year, many Delft courses were missing from the list of eligible programs for the NFP scholarship. As a matter of fact, I had already gotten the commitment letter from my employer before I noticed this.
