Should You Believe in Reincarnation?

THE Greek philosopher Plato connected falling in love with the idea of reincarnation. He believed that after the death of the body, the soul, being immortal, migrates to what has been called the “realm of the pure forms.” Bodiless, it remains there for some time, contemplating the forms. When it is later reincarnated into another body, the soul subconsciously remembers and yearns for the realm of forms. According to Plato, people fall in love because they see in their beloved the ideal form of beauty they vaguely remember and seek.

Identifying the Source and the Basis

The teaching of reincarnation requires that the soul be immortal. The origin of reincarnation, then, must be traced to those peoples or nations that held such a belief. On this basis, some think that it originated in ancient Egypt. Others hold that it got started in old Babylonia. To create prestige for the Babylonian religion, its priesthood advanced the doctrine of transmigration of the soul. They could thus claim that their religious heroes were reincarnations of notable, though long dead, ancestors.

It was in India, however, that belief in reincarnation came to full bloom. The Hindu sages were grappling with the universal problems of evil and of suffering among humans. ‘How can these be harmonized with the concept of a righteous Creator?’ they asked. They tried to resolve the conflict between God’s righteousness and the unforeseen calamities and inequalities in the world. In time, they devised “the law of karma,” the law of cause and effect—‘whatever a man sows, that shall he reap.’ They worked out a detailed ‘balance sheet’ whereby merits and demerits in one life are rewarded or punished in the next.

“Karma” simply means “action.” A Hindu is said to have good karma if he conforms to social and religious norms and bad karma if he does not. His action, or karma, determines his future in each successive rebirth. “All men are born with a blueprint of character, mainly prepared by their actions in previous lives, though their physical traits are determined by heredity,” says philosopher Nikhilananda. “A man is [thus] an architect of his own fate, the builder of his own destiny.” The ultimate goal, however, is to be liberated from this cycle of transmigration and be united with Brahman—the ultimate reality. This, it is believed, is achieved by striving for socially acceptable behavior and special Hindu knowledge.

The teaching of reincarnation thus uses as its foundation the doctrine of the immortality of the soul and builds on it using the law of karma. Let us see what God’s inspired Word, the Bible, has to say regarding these ideas.

Is the Soul Immortal?

To answer this question, let us turn to the highest authority on the subject—the inspired Word of the Creator. In the very first book of the Bible, Genesis, we learn the accurate meaning of “soul.” Regarding the creation of the first man, Adam, the Bible says: “Jehovah God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7) Clearly, the soul is not what a man has but what he is. The Hebrew word used here for soul is neʹphesh. It occurs some 700 times in the Bible, and it never refers to a separate and ethereal part of a human but always to something tangible and physical.—Job 6:7; Psalm 35:13; 107:9; 119:28.

What happens to the soul at death? Consider what happened to Adam at his death. When he sinned, God told him: “You [will] return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3:19) Think of what that means. Before God created him from the dust, Adam did not exist. After his death, Adam returned to the same state of nonexistence.

Simply stated, the Bible teaches that death is the opposite of life. At Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10, we read: “The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol, the place to which you are going.”

This means that the dead are unable to do or feel anything. They no longer have any thoughts, nor do they remember anything. The psalmist states: “Do not put your trust in nobles, nor in the son of earthling man, to whom no salvation belongs. His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts do perish.”—Psalm 146:3, 4.

The Bible clearly shows that at death the soul does not move on to another body, but it dies. “The soul that is sinning—it itself will die,” the Bible emphatically states. (Ezekiel 18:4, 20; Acts 3:23; Revelation 16:3) Thus, the doctrine of the immortality of the soul—the very foundation of the theory of reincarnation—does not find any support in the Scriptures. Without it, the theory collapses. What, then, explains the suffering we see in the world?

Beautiful write-up, but conclusions are suspect and contradictory of the premise you yourself laid. It also knocks heads with the Gospel, with the Koran and with reality.

The whole of the book of Revelation is devoted to the fate of the soul, both the good and the evil. The Koran talks of Al-Janna. Traditional Religions speak of the world being the marketplace and heaven the final home. Surah Al-Jathiyah 45:26:
"Allah causes you to live, then causes you to die; then He will assemble you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt, but most of the people do not know."

Jesus Himself came as a body, in the flesh, John 1:1-14. Does it mean that when He died He was extinguished? No. Reality is that He came back, and had post-resurrection interactions with living human beings! In fact, he became a model of what was to come -and the scriptures called Him the firstfruits from the dead. Fact!
1Corinthians 15:20 "But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept."

In John 14, after His resurrection, He made post-life promises:
1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

So the soul dies but lives to face judgement. Thereafter, it either lives with God in eternal bliss or lives forever in the lake of fire, a fate worse than death.

The teaching of reincarnation isn't true because
Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 clearly says
"For the living knows that they will die, but the dead know nothing at all, nor do they have any more reward, because all memory of them is forgotten.
6. Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they no longer have any share in what is done under the sun."

When she was but a child, She told her family where she was originally from, the number of children she had and named them, she also described her compound, the special tree she planted to honor the birth of her first son, husband and former relatives. The family traced her claims to three villages away and realised it was truth. The manner in which she died was confirmed, and her former children when they saw her screamed and raised alarm. The whole village agreed that she was indeed who she said she was. She was calling names, asking about some folks who had died and recognized people in her age grade who were still alive. Her first children used to come visit her at her husband's house till they passed on.

The truth is there is a lot we do not know as even the Bible reveals this truth in mysteries . If the flesh dies and soul and spirit aren't dead, there is a possibility they may come back.

My occultic relatives can summon dead people to tell them things. Some call it familiar spirit which is the mirror spirit of the clean spirit of man. Deliverance ministers argue that it is the familiar spirit that is "reincarnated'' and it is the familiar spirit which people see in dreams and as ghosts. No human being knows the answers to these questions. The best most people would do is to speculate. There are roughly 4200 religions in the world but with 12 only in the majority. Each religious sect will try to explain it based on their doctrine with each group claiming to have the infinite knowledge and wisdom. The fact remains that nobody knows.

During a Sunday School session in a Christ Apostolic Church at Surulere, Lagos, a matter cropped up about someone who saw her dead father in dreams, giving her instructions on some matter.

Several suggestions were made to explain the phenomenon, with the Pastor dismissing it as demonic because it contradicted Heb 9:27, "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment."

Preferring to only listen, I wished I could tell the church that Jide Kosoko, yes, the Nollywood actor, had his maternal lineage enmeshed in such a story. His cousin, my friend, told me. And I am told the man produced a movie on the subject.

Today, a lady, told me of her Dad, a wealthy Igbo businessman, was matchetted to death in ethno-religious riots in Zaria in the 1960s. When the man's pregnant wife delivered, the baby girl bore dark marks all over her body that looked like machete cuts. That baby grew and always told her siblings and mum that she was their father and husband and had returned to continue the assignment of catering for them, which he was prevented from doing by his untimely death.

Can dead people return with repaired bodies? The Bible cites one instance, Matthew 27:52-53, "And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many."

Really, do we totally understand this subject of dead people having a second chance at life? Have we exposed everything about the cycle of life?

And the same bible tells us that "the way of man is different from the way of men" Ask any pastor to explain the verse "my people perish for lack of knowledge" to you they will refer to this "knowledge" as knowibg the word of God it is a lie . The knowledge is very deep and its beyond human comprehension it includes reincarnation, seeing a dead person having a family somewhere far away, praying in certain way by calling God's real name to avert or prevent certain evil occurrences, Some of these pastors knows all these things but they won't tell you the truth. Reincarnation and transmigration of soul is NOT true biblically. Op the portion you cited about souls coming out of grave after Jesus resurrection is an exception. You can't find it elsewhere. Even Samuel dead body appearing to the witch of Endor for Saul was also different. Heb.9:27 as you've quoted settles it.If this people really reincarnate why can't they continue the life they were leaving before.Stories we've heard say that once they see someone who knows them,they disappear. If you know how crafty Satan is,you will.know that it is demon who assumes the figure of the individuals to deceive people.

that place is talking about THE RESURRECTION.

I think reincarnation is real. There was an incident that happened in my hometown in Ekiti some years back.
A guy (tenant) living in a house had a terrible accident that afternoon, which the whole town is aware of as a result of it's horribleness and he was buried that evening being a single guy.
But, later that evening when everyone was in his/her room and the main doors (not a gated building) have been locked, this guy came knocking, fuming and asking why they would lock the door when they know he hasn't entered the house ( they all had good rapport).

It's a story building, they were awaken by his incessant knocking and they all heard his voice clearly only they were scared to open the door for him because they all went for his burial earlier in the evening of that day.

When he kept on knocking non stopping-everyone in the house already gathered downstairs- they opened the back door and ran away. None of them slept in that house that day. I am sure if they had opened the door for him, they would have all seeing him because he himself didnt know he was already dead.

But the following morning, so many people already gathered there with some of the runaway tenants and the guy was nowhere to be found again.
They can't all be lying now. Infact, everyone of them moved out of the house including the landlord's daughter.

Biblically speaking the dead knows nothing.

The solution to death in the Bible is RESURRECTION, not reincarnation.

Reincarnation and transmigration of soul is NOT true biblically. Op the portion you cited about souls coming out of grave after Jesus resurrection is an exception. You can't find it elsewhere. Even Samuel dead body appearing to the witch of Endor for Saul was also different. Heb.9:27 as you've quoted settles it.If this people really reincarnate why can't they continue the life they were leaving before.Stories we've heard say that once they see someone who knows them,they disappear. If you know how crafty Satan is,you will.know that it is demon who assumes the figure of the individuals to deceive people.

The 1st encounter I had was that of my aunt (dad's younger sister)... I dreamt of an accident that killed a co tenant of mine, his car was hit out of nowhere, he didn't die instantly after the 1st somersault, then the 2nd somersault made him sustain a neck injury, I was beckoning on other neighbours including the man's wife to help me take the man to the hospital but they were all looking at me like nothing happened, then I had to get a wheel barrow to take him to the hospital (all these were in the dream).. The 1st hospital rejected him telling me that they can't treat him and I had to take him to the next hospital, which later took him in, I was like let them commence treatment, lest I forget, that particular hospital was very crowded and for sometime I started looking for a doctor to ask about the man... A man approached me and I told me that I don't belong here that I should leave asap, that he would relate with me If something good comes out of it.. I gave myself sense and left and was like after all, why would I carry the matter for head since the man ain't my hubby.. I left the hospital and met the man wife but she cared less about the incident..

I had another dream pertaining my kid after the 1st dream which made me cry and woke up and also found myself crying... I called my mom and narrated the dream to her but for our selfish reasons, we only prayed against the death of my son as I saw it in the dream.. Only for my mom to call me 2 days later, that my aunt died in an accident as exactly as I saw it my dream, the 1st hospital rejected her that she should be taken NAUTH but on reaching there, she was confirmed dead.. (A car hit her car out of nowhere and she somersaulted and a neck injury with other internal injuries)....

On reaching mortuary to see her, I went unaccompanied, BELIEVE ME I saw my aunt sitting on a rock near the building of the mortuary, she was looking at me eye to eye, I was frozen to death.. And since then I blamed myself for her death...

Whao, this is powerful.... Though I learned the strength to get up and rebuke bad dreams after getting up during fellowship school days, you've just made me learn another. And that is : understanding that the person seen in a dream may be cloaked and masked and not be the real person an event will happen to. It may even be one's self aside siblings. And we mustn't take it lightly because the dream came for a reason and we would deny our self good not to pray for the person we saw and rebuke evil generally. I can't imagine your feelings when you saw her staring at you (Chai... Pain, sorrow plus great fear mixed together.... Sorry). Also interested in what happened after you both saw sha.... Maybe she disappeared or you take style reverse away from the place.
