and we topped that same group having them and qualified with an extra match to go...they had to wait till their last match to confirm their qualification...
I'm more interested in our head-to-head results with them than our group standings

South Africa is our perennial girlfriend, we sabi knack dem kpekus

Stop that unnecessary hype on South African team. What made them qualify for the next round was the fact that there is a best loser. A loser is a loser. If there wasn’t best loser, would Za team have qualified, let alone beating Egypt?

If they are that good like you painted it, how come they won only a game against the weakest team in their group, Namibia, and couldn’t defeat the other two teams, Morocco and Ivory Coast?

The fact that they held Egypt and eventually won Egypt hasn’t made them greater than what they are. Moreover, majority of their squad are home based and not major players in European football where football really happens. So what made their squad outbeats ours?
Mr. Man Portugal was the best loosed 3 years ago in France and they went ahead to win the Euros. Don't underestimate any team in this AFCON.

I really wish Nigerian fans will tone down the bragging. Just allow the boys get to it and give it their best shot

One thing is crystal clear: this South African team is MILES better than the one we walloped in 2004. Plus our team is weaker compared to the SE team of 2004.

I was in awe watching the Bafana Bafana against Egypt. It was easily the most interesting game I'VE WATCHED at the tournament yet. They PRESSED Egypt and played some intricate, top-notch pass and move game. That was nice to see.

I hope our coach finally gets the memo and unleash our new golden boy, Chukwueze from the get-go. Just as Percy Tau will occupy Aina, I would like Chukwueze to occupy that Lanthi guy in RSA's "3" position.
Well said.. We gotta look out for Percy tau.. That guy is lethal

After reading your comment, I went back to preview the match again. You are absolutely correct.

Coincidence? You know nothing about football.

Georges Makanjes was on a yellow card. When Chukwueze was introduced, it caused real concern on Seedorf's face. Watch the clip again and see how he went to talk to Kluivert about it on the bench. As a result of that substitution, see what happened:

a) Makanjes was substituted because Seedorf knew the chances of him being turned by Chukwueze was high. Makanjes would have had to tackle and he most likely would have been sent off. He was subbed for Aguissi who was a less effective marker.

b) Knowing that Aguissi was going to have problems marking a quicker, faster and more masterful dribbler in Chukwueze, an extra player was drafted to help Aguissi mark Chukwueze, unlike having just one defender in Makanjes who clearly marked off Moses Simon. Deploying an extra defender meant a distortion of the original defensive formation of Cameroon and this is what opened the spaces for Musa, Iwobi and Ighalo to start incursions from the middle. Led to our 3rd goal.

Seedorf showed clearly that he is still an apprentice coach. Gernot Rohr outsmarted him tactically.[/quote]

I'd rather rely on recent history when south Africa whupped us 2 nil in Uyo and we managed to draw them 1-1 in the return leg. There used to be a time when the Bafana boys were a walkover for us, not anymore. Underestimate them at your own risk.
Actually, southafrica was the team that managed to get a draw in the second leg.

My only problem with most Nigerian teams is they let you down when you tip them and vice-versa.

We should have beaten them 3:1 in SA if not for dubious calls of offside.

Sa have always struggled with our physicality

The 2 : 0 was a smash and grab

The first time ever they have beaten us in an official FIFA match.

I can remember this match Odemwingie mentioned. Tunisia 2004 nations cup.

That match brought Odemwingie to our focus, as he was relatively unknown in the national team as at then. Brought into the match and scored a brace.

Seems Like Odemwingie’s memory failed him a lill. It was actually 4-0, not 4-1
He(Osaze) actually scored a brace, Jay Jay scored from the spot and Joseph yobo scored an header.

Your second paragraph nearly ruined a great submission...

South Africa stepped up against Egypt, and won in a moment of magic, and miscalculation from their opponents... That doesn't make them better than Super Eagles even in the slightest.

Football is about turning up, and converting chances... But, in general team outlook, toe to toe, Super Eagles are actually miles ahead... Chukwueze will easily make a mess of that wing, and which of their strikers is as clinical as Ighalo?

They cheated to get a draw in the second leg

Two dubious offside calls

Fyi: we dominated the game in the first leg until Ranti ( their striker at that time) pulled a rabbit out of a hat and outmuscled our makeshift defenders to score a goal.

The second came after we had committed too many players to attack in search of equaliser and kegan dolly was allowed to pick up Perci tau on the counter.

Perfect analysis!

Also add north Africa teams have always struggled against South Africa, especially Eygpt.

More importantly, Eygpt concentrated their firepower in the flanks, making it slightly easy for South Africa to defend against them, ours is slightly more central.

Part of the problem with this country is that we are overbloated with a stupid ego and yet we end up achieving nothing. Instead of getting to work on ourselves like every other serious people, we think we are there when in actual fact we are nothing. We claim to be giant of Africa yet most small countries in Africa can boast of basic things like steady power supply, etc. but we can't. Even in football, how many times have we won the nations cup? three! only three times! Egypt has won it 7times, Cameroun 5 times, Ghana 4 times. Even South Africa has won it too. And yet somehow we still think we are better than them.
I watched our game against barely known, debutant, Madagascar. I watched the game for 10 minutes and knew immediately that it wasn't going to be an easy one. But the guys around me kept shouting Nigeria is going to beat them 3-0, 4-0, bla bla bla. Even after we conceded the first goal, some were still saying it's a mistake, it's a walkover for Nigeria. In the end we all know what happened.
It's true SA qualified as best losers, but remember in Euro 2016, Portugal came out as best losers, but went ahead and won the trophy. (And don't tell me it's because they have Ronaldo, because same Ronaldo was there when they nearly crashed out at the group stage; and Ronaldo barely played for 10mins in the finals which they won.) A team can start quite badly, but register a steady and consistent progress.
To write off an SA team that defeated the hosts and tournaments favorites shows you understand very little about football, that is if you watch it at all, and particularly, I am sure you never watched the Egypt game.
I hope the super eagles would understand that they really have a serious game at hand and get to work.

Good analysis. SA has been building. What they have is a "Team" and like you said, they are quite good with the basics of football, I am not surprised because they have one of the best leagues with top notch organization in Africa.
When I am in Nigeria I tune in to watch their league and I find it a lot more passionate and interesting than our own league games.

What we can do is not lose ball in vital areas as it has recently become our habit and also not commit those silly unforced errors in passing.

The problem with you is that you don't understand Ghana won the nations cup only when four teams played the nation cup

Eygpt won most of the nations cup in that era

And Nigeria have the most appearance in the semifinals in the history of the nations cup.

Only Cameroon and Eygpt can claim to have won more in the same era Nigeria dominated Africa football.

It is also important to note that one of the nations cup won by Cameroon was a dubious win against Nigeria. i.e the penalty shootout in Nigeria 2000.

So stop berating your nation for no reason.

Unarguably, this SA team is far better than our team in every department. They have one of the best defence in this tournament. If they could rattle Egypt the way they did, it will take miracle for us to escape unscathed if we play against them the way we played against Cameroon. We beat Cameroon because their team too is nothing to write home about.

Are u sure you have the technicality to read match. Am not holding brief for Chukweze but when Moses Simon was on the pitch Awaziem was not moving forward but more of defending but as Chukweze entered he was holding the ball pulling two to three players to himself coz of his dribbling. Although on some occasions he loosed the ball to Cameroon players coz they crowded him but that was the hallmark and Awaziem now breathe sigh of relief and have the space to cross balls into the opponent box that was how the equaliser came.
