It happens.
A banker told me there is an account opemed in their branch with over 20 million naira dormant for the past 10 years.
She told me everybody in the bank knows about the account, and the first thing every staff do when they resume in the morning is to secretly check if the money is still there in the account.

They don't trust oga.

Why are we giving the Bank's excuses to be legally dubious
This is a normal thing that's expected to happen
Which means there should have been a general Bank law in cases like this
Nigeria really has no check and balances
There should be a legal body checking for things like this and making sure to punish Banks that hold on to dead men's properties maybe after one year of no one coming to make claim of them
Really is this an issue at all
If there's no law pertaining to this then this is corruption staring hard at us
There's no excuse whatsoever

I was privilege to chat with a female bank manager, she made a scary revelation to me. She told me how Nigerian bank vaults are filled with monies of dead men who kept their bank accounts secret from their wives.

She explained it was against bank ethics or policies for an account officer to inform the relatives of a deceased customer of his account (without his permission). And since the man is dead, without giving his permission, the bank dubiously keeps silent about the money. She told me it is rampant among many businessmen.

She revealed many instances of dead men whose families are still suffering, while they have millions stashed in their secret accounts.

She mentioned one that happened few months back. The man died and the wife was crying all over the place, looking for money to bury him. Whereas the man had nothing less than 60 million naira in his accounts. The banker said it got to a stage that she could no longer bear it, her conscience was pummelling her. She had to go against her bank rules, and got in contact with the widow and revealed to the woman how much her husband had in his accounts and how to claim them.

She also told of another story of one man who escaped death, but his right hand got paralysed. He couldn't sign his chequebook with his left hand and he was in a desperate situation that needed him to sign papers and cheques. That was how he learnt his lesson the hard way. As soon as he got better, he immediately made his wife co-signatory to all his accounts and involved her in all his businesses. What if he had died? That was how his family would have suffered in the midst of plenty.

This stupid behaviour is not reserved for wealthy men alone, even paupers who earn little have their own complex issues.

I just read on the wall of one of our groups where a man complained of how his friend refused to release his ATM pin number to his wife even though there was an emergency at home, and his ATM was at home.

Many orphans and widows suffering today are put in that condition by their stupid dead father.

Women and Retirees are not left out. Someone told me how a relative of hers died and none of her relatives knew that her properties were scattered all over the world. Not even one house. Not even a dime in any of her accounts... If you knew billions unclaimed in banks belong to selfish dead people, you would weep.

Banks and Bankers grow fat on these oafs.

Please do the needful now that you still have the breath to do so. Of course tomorrow is pregnant and only God knows what it will deliver.

A word is enough for the wise

This is untrue. I say this because I am in the system and I understand how it works. All the family needs is to visit the court probate office. In cases of uncertainty, the court can write the banks to furnish them with any bank details of the deceased in that particular name and more easily these days, BVN.

Mind you, this information is not difficult to come by these days, even details of deceased assets in investment houses other than banks can also be retrieved much more banks.

But the families dont know the dead man has an account or not, so how would they even reach out to the bank without knowing?

an account holder dies, his/her next of kin brings a death certificate and some probate document as required by the bank, the bank forwards the money to the court and the court hands over the funds to the next of kin.
The scenario is different here
The family members have no single idea he has money in the Bank or any Bank
The same way they track down cyber fraud and all,it should also be mandatory for them to track his family and have them know about it

Hmm.. Foolish husbands indeed.
My papa na multimillionaire and his wife doesn't know anything about his accounts till today. Too bad.. Anyways, women too like money and once they know how much in ur account there will be problem always. Let's not forget women too are guilty of the same act, they hide their money and prefer to spend the men's own.

"Let's not forget women too are guilty of the same act, they hide their money and prefer to spend the men's own".... That's the main reason most men don't let their wife know...

Some of them didn't graduate from that bf/gf level, where the lady receive from the guy, to spend on whatever she likes... Meanwhile, when some get married, they continue in that practice, then hide their own money to spend not on the man or family in most cases but for whatever they want...

With the level of Rivalry amongst Banks and infact all organizations in Nigeria
It's sad the opponent party is never thinking in a good direction to pull his rival down
Just imagine if Bank A got to probe Bank B's management, found out this and reported it to a sort of National or International Bank Parliament, the issue is out to the public, tell me if they won't loose customers drastically
But nope they'd rather do Tweeter War's
Really!
Please forget the husband and wife issue
What is not right isn't right

Take them to court
Tell the lawyer based on % if he is successful

But first have you done the probate court designation of next of kin and taken the letter to the bank and they refused to pay?

This issue came up in the course of my conversation with someone 2 weeks ago, he said he has a banker friend who happens to be account officer of a man who passed on February 2018 and in his account a 7 figure balance and no one has come forward since then which means none of his relatives knew about it.

We argued if his banker friend can go tip his family as his kids would surely need the money for their upkeep but no matter how noble, it will be unethical for the banker to let his family know since the deceased didn't want them to know about it.

Yep. Nigerians are really funny and unscrupulous. They form ethical when they don't have to, but go against ethics when they shouldn't.

That's the conclusion of the whole matter. Marrying a hood wife. I believe that's the best and greatest decision any man can make on this earth.

A good wife is not just valuable when you are alive but even more valuable when you are gone. Marrying a bad terrible wife is the worst thing that can happen to man.

That's why we need to draft a WILL listing out all our properties and who its been gifted to.
That's the only solution for this

A lot of Nigerians don't want to hear about WILL cos they feel preparing a will means preparing for death and they think preparing for death is bad omen that might attract death....

Next of kin is different from a beneficiary. Just because you're someone's next of kin doesn't automatically make you the beneficiary.
