Hello Guys!
Visa Approved this morning at the US Consulate, Frankfurt.
The consular officer allowed me to finish my sentences so I was really free to express myself.

VO: Passport and I-20 please
Me: I did as I was asked.

VO: What are you going to do in the US
Me: I am going for my Master’s degree in Ocean, Coastal and Earth Sciences at UTRGV

VO: How did you find out about this school?
ME: I got to speak with one of the lecturing staff of the University and my intended department during a geoscience conference in Lagos, Nigeria in 2018. He told me the department was looking for graduates of Geology for the new phase of their research and when I shared my Geology background and interests with him, he told me I would be a good fit and that I should apply. So I did further research on the school via Princeton review, usnews and other search parameters and I was satisfied so I applied.

VO: Your bachelors is also in Geology?
Me: Yes it is.

VO: You got your bachelors from Germany or Nigeria?
Me: Nigeria please.

VO: When did you come to Germany?
Me: April this year.

VO: What are you doing in Germany?
Me: I am currently studying Sustainable Mining and Remediation Management at TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

VO: Why don't you want to continue this programme in Germany?
Me: I put in for the Sustainable Mining programme here so I could research on the remediation of wastewater and heavy metals from mines but apparently the mines in Germany have been closed including the University’s experimental teaching mine where I am supposed to conduct my research. So it is no longer feasible to continue the programme. I believe going to the US at this time is a good call for me.

VO: Who is paying for your programme?
Me: Myself and my elder sibling

VO: What will you do with this degree?
Me: My career focus has always been in academia so the acquired training from this degree will strategically place me to take on a lecturing position at my alma mater (the University of Benin) as a researcher of environmental hydrogeology and I do have a competitive advantage here due to my recent work experience as a research assistant in the Department of Geology and also because the department only has one professor of hydrogeology that is aging and close to retirement. He would be glad to mentor me once more like he did as my thesis supervisor.

VO: Sorry did you say you finished from Benin?
Me: Yes, the University of Benin, Nigeria.
Me: Sorry the Benin I mentioned is different from the country called Benin. Benin is a city in Nigeria as well.
VO: Oh thanks for the correction. I actually thought you were referring to the country Benin. I'm sorry I'm not so familiar with places in Nigeria. (We both laughed).
VO went ahead to tell me that it's just like that in the US. That Springfield is another confusing term that is up to 35 in the US. I quickly said "oh so you need to specify the particular Springfield you're going to in the US". To this, the VO said YES. We laughed again after she told me one of her Springfield experiences.

VO: Alright your visa is approved....
VO: You did a good job answering all my questions. Please answer the questions same way at the port of entry okay.
I smiled and said I will.

Deficit - $30k
No SOA

Congrats smooth interview

Interview Proper

Me- Good morning
VO- Your I-20 and Passport please. (Passes)
VO- (As she was collecting) Have you traveled out before

Me- Yes, I went on vacation to the United Arab Emirates last year

VO- why did you pick this school?
Me- Apart from the generous tuition waiver, the department of Civil Engineering at Georgia Southern University has a good track record in (cuts me)

VO- which other schools did you applied to?

Me- Mentions 3. Names them.

VO- who's paying for the remaining parts
ME- My sister. Names her

VO- What does she do?
ME- She's a legal practitioner and a successful business owner.

VO- So why is she sponsoring you?
ME- She's aware of my ambitions and would be happy to see me take my career to the next level.

VO- So you're attending this school because of the tuition waiver?

Me- Not at all ma'am. I'm interested in working with Dr Bleep.
VO- Okay. (Types for about 3 mins and brought out the white paper) She mistakenly returns my passport and I was like (I no dey carry this thing comot here na)

She gave a very big smile and said thank you for that.
I'm a silent follower but I practically sleep on this thread. Posting my transcript is my way of saying thank you for all the contributions. Consular : why US?

ME: USA is known for it's World renowned Academia, and an education their will help build my intellect and professional competence.

Consular: why computer science?
There is more to computer science than just mobile and web development, studying computer science will help me learn more about other core branches that relates to computer science and all of these will help me in creating solutions that help in problem solving.

Consular : how many schools.

My response : 2 schools (Ramapo College and Sam Houston state university)

He asked of my SAT score and I told him 1280. And he was like with that score I applied to two schools.

After which he asked of who will be sponsoring me and I said my sister will be sponsoring me.

And he was like "Sorry I won't be approving your Visa"

Joke or not, there is a big lesson to learn from this. My Professor would always say, " woe to those who think experience is the best teacher because it is actually the worst. Precept is the best teacher. Precept is the experience of others."

It saddens me to share my experience as relating to the young man's comedy post of a proposed transcript to study in Harvard. I am also not so saddened cos I am sure this will help someone. The post caught my attention, cos I was initially like, " Oh, wow! Someone going to my school? We can certainly link up". But my bubble bursted when I realized that it was only a satire. For those who can remember, I shared earlier how I got denied a student visa, 4 times. Even though; I carried an I-20 from Harvard, with full tuition waiver plus stipends; I had a bank statement from an account in Atlanta with over $40k genuinely set aside for my studies; Plus a GA position. Chai! The pride that followed me to my first interview no make me see road pass. I answered all the questions arrogantly, who born their father? Chai! Pride is a demon oooo. I was so proud that I didn't alter a single sir/ma. I held my Harvard folder with so much air of importance. And with the same pride, the VOs gave me the blue slip 4 solid times.

LESSONS TO BE LEARNT: You are not superior to any VO as long as long as your visa interview is concerned. IVY school I-20 holders, get rejected too. No one cares, even if you were the best overall graduating student in your alma-mater; as long as you cannot answer the questions thrown at you to the satisfaction of the VO, rejection is sure. Be confident but DON'T BE PROUD! IVY league school is no substitute to preparation. Prepare! Prepare! Prepare! I read Shawarma's appreciation script and the wise counsel texrem gave her. If only someone had said that to me before my previous interviews. If only I was even humble enough to read Nairaland like my dear friend pleaded with me to. As long as you are reading this, I am sure you wouldn't make the same mistakes that I made.

There is safety in multitudes of counsel. God bless Nairaland and God bless you all. Happy Weekend. angry

Good evening.

Lol! Lol! Lol! I begged ooo, I begged that no one should come for me cos I have headache and I am preparing for my interview... *Ok, inhale and exhale* grin

Having read through your notes here, there is not much you need to prepare for. This is what you will need to overcome:

1. Why you spent 5 months in the US on a visit visa when you obtained the visa for a program. You'll need to explain that you have a job that permitted you to stay away for that long - apparently on short notice. If you took a leave of absence without pay, it may be useful to bring proof of this with you.
2. You're going for an MA, when you already have a masters degree - you'll need to explain why.
3. Your MA is in theology - from a country where a church can be found on every street corner and at least 1 in 3 people is a pastor. What is the purpose of this degree in your home country?

Frankly that's it. Come up with coherent explanations and hopefully you'll be able to convince your next VO. Americans do not believe in unecessary prayer, emotion-laden shouts of "amen" and empty "spiritual exercises". Answer questions truthfully and do not abuse the terms of any visa - claiming to not know is an excuse that only works in Nigeria.

Your reason for computer science can be more convincing if you research on the degree and come up with strong points why CS is perfect for you. More points if you can perfectly link em with your career plans.

Your answers made no sense. You can easily get the same level of education in the UK, Canada, Germany etc. Your rationale for why you wish to study computer science is even less convincing. Your SAT score is in the top 81st percentile, yet you applied to middling schools and only 2 at that. Easy to see the VO was not convinced you were ever interested in studying in the US.

1. Your score is good enough to enter better schools. Did you make an attempt to search for schools with financial aid? That can be a strong reason for selecting a school.

2. If you apply now you'll be denied again. Save your money and start again. This time apply to more and better schools. Understand why you are choosing a school and why you want to study computer science. Take your time. America will be there again next year.

Lol! Lol! Lol! I begged ooo, I begged that no one should come for me cos I have headache and I am preparing for my interview... *Ok, inhale and exhale* grin I rolled on the floor to thank God on behalf of someone else's visa. That's completely different from my previous denials. You didn't have to tag it "insincere religious grovelling". Haba! Haba Baba!

I have never said I was right by staying in the States for 5 months on a visiting visa. Never! I knew I was wrong and it's of no use crying over spilt milk. An health emergency came up that required me staying that long. Off course at the time, I didn't know it was a wrong move. I got the 4 rejections within 3wks because I didn't want to loose my admission, last year. Desperation is the last thing that defines me. You really didn't have to throw that low blow. I know what went wrong then and I know what to do, thanks for the advice.

About the job, I am a lecturer and a school owner. As a lecturer, you can get a leave of absence without pay. You have aired your opinions, hope I was able to clarify a few things for you? Please kindly don't come after me with negative inferences and assumptions. All the best.

[quote author=MyCaseIsDiffere post=80838940]Gluckwunsch, mein bruder! A big congratulations! Let's toast to a glass of German beer. cheesy

I got my first US Visa from Frankfurt in 2012. Chai! That experience was superbulous. I had to take the ICE train from Mannheim Hauftbanhof to Frankfurt and then took a tram to the embassy itself. Printed Google map and printed train schedule were my handbook. At that time, I couldn't afford internet subscription on my phone, only home wifi. ( That hustle life). wink. Immediately I highlighted from the fast long-distance train and got out from the train station, I noticed a carnival going on. Na him your village sister join them ooo. I danced, chopped biscuit and sweets, forget say I get visa interview. By the time my senses returned, I realized I only had ten minutes left to my scheduled interview time. Omo, the way I screamed Jesus enh, as if na Him send me message.

On getting to the embassy, my first encounter with the security officers at the gate made me delete the tales of woe, I had heard about US embassies in Nigeria. I went to my recycle bin and deleted again. See enh, the hefty security dudes adorned in their beautiful uniforms were so couteous and polite. They showed me where to drop my phone, camera, other electrical devices and sharp objects. I was then led to a sweet lady who smiled and informed me that she was going to put that screening baton over my body for further search. I replied with a big grin and was like, "please go on, ma'am". Next was into the big temperature controlled hall. See fine chairs! We were not up to 30 applicants in that gigantic hall. At the back of the hall was a dispensary for drinks and snacks. There was also a photo booth, which your sister fully utilized. ( Village girl must to show her logo). After taking my finger prints, I sat down in the very comfy chair for about ten minutes, basking and digesting the grandeur and tranquility that surrounded me. The elderly woman that took my finger prints told me that my wait time could be up to 30 mins. I got a white slip that indicated my number.

Then it was time for my sweet chat ( interview) with the VO. Brethren, the distance between the VO's window and the first roll of chairs in the hall in Frankfurt, is equivalent to the distance between the door of the interview hall and the window of the finger print people in US embassy Lagos, Nigeria. Ko da, everyone is excepted to be seated until their number is called. There is a big screen on the wall in front of the applicants that will show you the procession of the number run. It also indicates your esteemed wait time. Although, the VOs use a mic, but it's not loud enough for those seated to listen on the conversation. So where is tension coming from?

Thanks for sharing this experience. We just have to do better to make Nigeria a better place for everyone. The changes begin with u and me

Please don't try this. Vegas to Texas using bus
I can bet you, if you check local flights you'll get a cheap ticket to IAH or the closest airport in Texas to your destination.
While in Vegas, you can get a bus ride ($5 for 24 hours) to the Strip and Freemont street for sightseeing. Don't waste the 15 hours at the airport smiley

MY VISA WAS APPROVED THIS MORNING

VO: good morning, pass me your passport and i20

Me: I did

VO: so you are going to the US to study computer science.

Me: I am actually going to study management information systems with a major in computer systems analysis.

VO: what did you study in your undergraduate

Me: I studied Electrical and Electronic engineering with a major in telecommunications which has got to do with informations. MIS too has got to do with solving business problems with information technology.

VO: Why do you need a master's degree now, since you have been working with **** state government since you finished your NYSC

Me: I need a master's degree in MIS now for career advancement. Besides, more ministries are being created in my state and their is serious need for database administrators.

VO: I can see you have relatives in the US, what do they do?

Me: yes, I have 2 brothers in the united state, they are students of UIS, one just graduated and will be starting his PhD this same month, the other is still studying MPH.

VO: who will sponsoring you

Me: My elder brother, he is in charge of the family funds.

VO: I'll be approving your visa, he brought out the white paper and circled collection point, I didn't even wait to hear when to pick it up. I just carried my file and left.

No SOA asked, I didn't even take any test and I applied to just one school. It was just God!

To God be the glory, thank you nairalanders.

Congratulations
So straight forward
