You are referring to the profit maximisation or cost minimisation objective for the firm.

Remember, in a monopolistic competition, the firm can only influence either price or quantity and not both.

What many firms are trying to achieve right now is cost minimisation, in this scenario (mass market)

Here is the reason; purchasing power is still low amongst the vast populace and don't forget, those goods you mentioned up there are consumers goods not luxury goods where the few rich pay top premium.

I remember sometime ago, NDIC published a report saying that about less than a 1,000 Nigerian's have the largest share in Bank deposits (current and savings).

Hypothetically speaking, if I sell coca cola at N100, and the ratio of the rich to the middle class is 1 to 10, it would be easier to sell a packet of coca cola to 10 persons at N100 each to sum N1000 than to convince 1 man to buy a packet, and even if I persuade him, the multiplier effect may not be achieved.

For this reason, the law of Demand would not hold here (the lower the price the higher the quantity demanded) because the rich class loves to buy the goods no one is buying and the goods/products you listed up there don't strike as a luxury good/product. Therefore, the mass market strategy, would be the best to achieve.

To cite a practical example, Pepsi was once sold for N120, the masses withdrew, they had to bring it back to a N100 even with more quantity. Coke on the other hand couldn't cope, so they had to reduce the quantity to keep up with the same price. They both seek the same objective but now, capital is speaking, and I believe 7up Co. has d edge over NBC.

The Economy eventually decides which is the best method to adopt.

This is an unfortunate post by a Rwandan/Ugandan who accidentally was born in Nigeria

Stop please.......He invited Muslims. Why beg to be a part of a party that is not related to you.

I believe in unity and integration of people. You can always hang out with him sometime but let's understand the thin line here. A muslim will not beg to attend an Easter gathering. Stop acting dependent.

That aside,

Wow. Great exposition!

So it is valid to assert that consumer goods and luxury goods don't play by the same rules. Also, because purchasing power is at an all-time low, it will be wise to sell via quantity rather than brand (perceived higher quality)...hmmm

I just see what many firms are doing, having a consumer line and also a premium line. So they have parallel branding, parallel advertising, and two different strategy. Like another poster mentioned.. indomie brand and their new relish brand.

Why I even started wondering..I just realised bigi cola has taken significant market share from Cocacola.. yet almost everyone accept that Cocacola tastes better than Bigi Cola. Thanks for the response!

It is important to first establish that you have the capacity to compete in the premium segment because that space is inhabited by more established brands with sizable R & D budgets, high brand visibility and more capacity to absorb shocks. Inability to do that would drown the visibility of your product in that segment.

That said, considering the recent inflation which midwifed the birth and rise of several cheaper alternative products (especially FMCG's), I opine it would be a safer bet to start in the mass market if you're not already an established brand with significant market share, and then gradually introduce premium lines/variations of your product to secure those higher margins as you progressively establish brand presence. Indomie did the same by introducing their premium "Relish" line of noodles while maintaining the classic versions for the lower market spectrum.

If you're already an established brand however, it could be quite rewarding to take the plunge into the premium segment provided strategic marketing is involved and all T's are crossed. My 2 cents.

"...with sizable R & D budgets, high brand visibility and more capacity to absorb shocks. Inability to do that would drown the visibility of your product in that segment. "

No wonder the big brands continuously dish out money for multiple advertisements and release new lines of product. Only the strong will survive in this segment..lol

Thanks man!

Don't play premium if u are a new player in the market. Unless u are into fashion. To get a demand baseline, u have to cut price to increase supply. U can outrightly keep Increasing the price from time to time.

People need to taste Ur brand and see quality, so striking with u won't be a problem.

But don't you think there is a limit to which you can reduce cost.. then you can't also price your goods far below the market average..you'd have to deal with regulators, perceived "fakeness" of your brand, proliferation of imitations and so on..

Also, if you enter the market with a very low price, and you then decide to take a price increase after some time,..how do you ensure you don't loose share to competitors.. lol classical marketing chicken and egg dilemma..

So many ppl with no joy on this thread. Who doesn't know that NNPC holds south south meetings with crude uptakers where they give regular updates on recruitments?

Even the one they hold in the South West with refined undertakers, I just opted not to attend cos WWE is not really my thing.

Up north sha, there'll be another meeting with sidetakers on Thursday, interested participants should check NNPC website for entrance requirements.

Accept or reject it, no any correlation between tp and APL. We had a meeting with nnpc today in our office (located in the south south). Authoratively, nothing relates tp and apl. I am currently in ss4 an due for promotion to ss3 by Dec 2019. As Jarus said, CBA has been on President Buhari's table for approval. To tell u more, three states have not met the required number of the slots and most if not all the candidates from those states were paid tp.
U can continue to believe ur theories sha.

Which one is CBA?

Aside.

@Jarus and other economists in the house. Something that has been bothering my mind.

In the current market conditions of Nigeria nowadays, is it better to play in the premium segment or mass market?

I mean, some brands play premium (their earnings model is based on higher brand value and higher GM - gross margin e.g Cocacola, Pampers), while others play to the volume (lower GM, but higher volume e.g. indomie, molfix, Bigi Cola)

What's your take on this guys? (Sorry I'm putting it on this thread)

It is very difficult to sit on an Armchair and assume one business model is better than the other. Both the premium segment and mass-market can thrive depending on two factors. Strategy and Execution. I'd use the entertainment industry as an example. Purchasing power is low, but every weekend night from Thursday, clubs are almost full from Mainland to Island[Using Lagos as an example].

A bottle of Jack Daniel or Hennesey VS[Very Special] goes for 25-35k while Hennesey VSOP[Very special old pale] can sell for 50-65k depending on the location and the orders come in droves. Not to talk of champagne such as Dom Perignon, Ace of Spades, Moet Et Chandon....... etc.

If you go to some other open-air gardens or joints, these same drinks sell at 25-60% below the club's prices and yet the orders are also coming in droves. And coming in last is our beer parlors that sell drinks at pump price grin . They also have their customers swarming like bees on a weekend night. In strategy, this is known as differentiation

So in considering making a choice, of business model, the strategy is important. You have to understand your market segment, know their size, and most importantly make decisions on what services or products not to offer. So whether your strategy is differentiation or cost leadership, execution is what makes you thrive amongst the competition.
