You are a wicked soul, from the tone on your write-up, you are a selfish individual who cares only for money, your Joy was that you did not travel on the vessel and you loss financially was averted how queer to have such though when you think about those who were unfortunate and the fact that a lady was being helped to live, the tone of your write-up suggest to my mind that you are so immature and childish
If money comes before life and especially that of others who were not so lucky, corruption has really taken a root in your soul

so sad to see the loss of lives in the process
Are you okay?

Honestly, I don’t think people have reported these incidents. If not for Logobenz this would have gone unreported as well. It’s a huge loss of lives. Nigerian government try to minimize responsibility. If they are not shamed in the media they pretend like it never happened. I don’t think this is about Tribe.

Also, the neighboring states and originating states should have stepped in or called the attention to the FG on this. So that sea travel can be made safer. This mode of transportation is definitely needed and FG need to support it and provide opportunity for the industry. Safety must be a priority. RIP to those who lost lives... passengers should not be in cargo holds for cargo vessels though. That’s completely crazy.
I am telling you that Nigerian government know about this. This route has been in existence since the end of civil war, and the number of boat mishaps should be more than 200 since then, they know but since the people controlling the federal government of Nigeria since the end of civil war is mostly Hausa-Fulanis and Yorubas, they don't care since this does not affect their people or region. If it has been happening in Kaduna, Kano, Lagos, etc, they would have intervened since.

That's why I laugh and pity Niger Delta people who always taunt Igbos and align with Hausa-Fulanis and Yorubas that don't care about them or their region aside to come explore crude oil to become overnight billionaires while they suffer

Sometimes silence is golden, you don't have to say anything,it's not by force to be heard,so why not keep quiet and observe things as they unfold.
You just displayed the highest level of hypocrisy and it so annoying, that you even think you're right, who name you the judge of morals? Do you even know what it means to do business? Have you ever had a close death situation? Do you know how to be grateful for been alive?.

I'm so sorry for the community you grew up or resides presently, your kind are the types that will always see fault in any developmental projects, and live in denials.
Pls how else do you want the op to relate the news, can you "mr sensitive" do better than the op did?
I weep for this country, this are the kind of people who keeps dragging us back with the mediocre minds,I am very certain this jerk voted "mr integrity",they'll be claiming holy and the country as gone to the dogs.
Happy for the celebration of life @logobenz it's God's doing that you are alive, only he has the power over your life, not some judgemental ass.
He's even talking about maturity, coming from a kid, what do you know about maturity?

The Maritime Industry is strictly regulated, But the ships plying local routes get off with it because NIMASA is not beaming their radar towards them, because they do not make money to satisfy their greed.

More strictness is applied to vessels working with IOCS (Like Total, ExxonMobil, Addax, Chevron), In short before your vessel is hired by these companies, their superintendent will carry out a comprehensive inspection before hiring and most be compliant with the latest technology

Most of the ship carrying goods and passengers from Calabar to Cameroun are outdated ships with lot of defects and some are over due for dry docking.... I can never step onboard such ships because there are floating coffin on water
The bolded is not true!!
What happened was COMATRANS had 4 vessels but was plaqued with incompetence since the owner decided to fire all the expatriates running it and started training his tribesmen to run that vessel.
Their first disaster happened in Gabon where all crew left their ship unattended to and improperly berthed to go and flex in town as big ballers wey dem be undecided
It floated away to a restricted water and when the navy of that country radioed them, there was no response.
It was shot down!first loss.
Second loss was their shining star Brenda Colette that caught fire right in a jetty due to flammable cargo.
I can't blame them for that.
Third loss was due to overload, the vessel did not even move an inch from the wharf and began sinking immediately right there infront of everyone.
Here now,the owner bankrupt(I know him personally) decided to borrow small money to rehabilitate the oldest of his fleet(Austrheim) to help him raise money for a better vessel which has now sank.
I think it is improper crew that wrecked this company because when the Senegalese crew were still there(captain Kahn to be precise),they never had a single incident for more than 13 years.
Really sad men.

I am Yoruba and I disagree with you. I have never heard of this route until right now by this post and I have never heard of the mishaps. Awareness of incidents can bring about practical solutions. Niger Delta and Igbo people have representation in Nigeria. There is also a Niger Delta ministry. Amaechi is Minister for Transport. The governors of states in the Niger Delta are rich enough to ensure that this mode of transportation is secure. But they obviously don’t care.

The people also don’t demand better from their governors. They instead blame FG. SW governors can never escape repercussions with such a frequent and indiscriminate loss of lives. We will deal with them seriously. This is why they appear to be trying to work at least.

So really, there is no reason for this menace to go on unchecked. Let’s not try to paint everything with a tribal brush. I am shocked and disgusted by this news.

My question is simple. People knew all this and still put their lives and limbs in harms way....for goodness sake even if there is no government in Nigeria, or in Cross-River state.... where is the common sense amongst those people.... or they were just playing Russian roulette with their lives?

I write this with a lot of pain and grief. This was a bad one.

I woke up to a call yesterday of a loved one calling me and panting over the phone. I was like sister what's the problem?she shouted Amen upon hearing my voice.
I too, scared had to ask her again what the problem was?

She said that a vessel named Austrheim just sank at sea and knowing I do a lot of business with that route, she just had to call to make sure her loved one was not in it!

Actually I did not travel due to improper schedules of arrival of some of my commodities, making it impossible for my commodities to meet up with departure time of this particular vessel.
I was mad!!!little did I know that I was about to be saved of a huge financial loss that would have crippled me financially and put me in turmoil.
Every disappointment is indeed a blessing like people say.

At this point I just have to believe my mom's prayers actually works!

I was speechless,my heart fell in my stomach because I knew what it meant for me. Lots of money and lives lost!people have perished and livelihoods lost.

But at this point money isn't important but we should all give a moment of silence to the hustling men and women trying to make a living for themselves in those waters.

It left calabar on Saturday morning heading for tiko, Cameroon and never made it. It actually sank in the bakassi peninsula.

Word from survivors say it ran aground due to the captain's negligence and incompetence.

106 people have been rescued so far and I have started seeing missing person pictures of people I know too well and all I could do now is hope it is not what I think yet.
So because you were not involved,it's a blessing n those who were unfortunate don't have prayerful mothers abi?, continue.

Amaechi the minister of transport should answer for this. Also the Navy should be questioned seriously. How come Cameroon is rescuing our people. There is no presence of the Navy in our waters. So we are as porous everywhere as a broken basket. God help us in this country.

my dear if the people were in the cargo hold then the deaths would have been minimal but they were in the passenger compartment which is far below at the ship's base.
So upon impact, the passengers who perhaps left the passenger hold to cargo hold to perhaps go and smoke, gamble, socialise, womanize, interact with one another rushed to grab life jackets and run for safety whereas those down below were trapped and couldn't come out.
That is what I know happened.

The bolded is not true!!

You are contradicting yourself, Because from your explanation, Their vessel was just a floating coffin

What happened was COMATRANS had 4 vessels but was plaqued with incompetence since the owner decided to fire all the expatriates running it and started training his tribesmen to run that vessel.

I hope you know about cabotage law?

When a vessel changes her flag from a foreign flag to their country flag, It is mandated that your crew onboard should man most of the positions onboard (Transfer of manpower/knowledge must have taken place before the expatriate's contract ended
)

Their first disaster happened in Gabon where all crew left their ship unattended to and improperly berthed to go and flex in town as big ballers wey dem be undecided
It floated away to a restricted water and when the navy of that country radioed them, there was no response.
It was shot down!first loss.

Incompetence of the crew side

Second loss was their shining star Brenda Colette that caught fire right in a jetty due to flammable cargo.
I can't blame them for that.

I will blame the crew, The captain has the right to reject or accept any cargo brought onboard and stow it properly to avoid damage or fire!!

Third loss was due to overload, the vessel did not even move an inch from the wharf and began sinking immediately right there infront of everyone.

I hope you know about "Load line" of a vessel? Who loads cargo on a vessel without taking load line into consideration?

I head here now,the owner bankrupt(I know him personally) decided to borrow small money to rehabilitate the oldest of his fleet(Austrheim) to help him raise money for a better vessel which has now sank.

I think it is improper crew that wrecked this company because when the Senegalese crew were still there(captain Kahn to be precise),they never had a single incident for more than 13 years.

Yeah there were there for 13 years.... But was the boat maintained as when due after they left?

Really sad men.

You don't know about it because you are not in government leadership, if you were, you will be filled with information of virtually everything happening in Nigeria, it is then left for u to act or not based on your interest.

See, I have been a bit privileged to be around top Nigerian leaders and I tell u that tribalism and religious discrimination are what destroyed Nigeria and they are the major things that will never allow Nigeria grow like most common Nigerians desire.

After the civil war, there were so many secret consensus among Hausa-Fulanis and Yoruba political elites and top military goons to keep Igbos under check through economy sabotage of Southeast region and by extension Southsouth.

In those various secret consensus, they agreed that an Igbo man will never become Chief of Army Staff or President, reason Ekwueme's chances to become Nigeria's president in 1983 and 1999 were all thwarted by the northern power brokers in collaboration with Yorubas.

Ekwueme formed PDP, he won the primary election but they did a power upturn to give the ticket to OBJ as compensation to Yorubas for MKO Abiola so they don't lose out their Southern division.

Ekwueme was to succeed Shagari, Buhari and his northern boys boycotted it through their coup.

Only few Middlebelt military officers later realized that Hausa-Fulanis were using them to work against Igbos that did them no wrong but agitating for equal treatment for all Nigerians irrespective of tribe, and reason Major Giddeon Okar plotted the coup to remove IBB and divide Nigeria into many nations but unfortunately the coup failed.

What's holding Nigeria down is the conspiracy by Hausa-Fulanis and Yoruba political elites to keep Igbos politically and economically below.

In terms of southeast state governors not doing much, let me tell u, there is nothing much a Nigerian state governor can do without Presidential support cos that's how Nigeria is structured by Gowon and subsequent military rulers and all efforts for this to be changed have been refused by the North who are the biggest beneficiaries.

Southeast don't get much revenue allocation. Out of the 6 geopolitical zones, only southeast have 5 states, why

So many crude oil reserves in Southeast have been intentionally abandoned without exploration to ensure southeast is made poor economically so they will not be seen as oil producing states. I know many unexplored crude oil sites abandoned by FG intentionally or for whatever reasons known to them.

I have never been in a Cargo ship but I wouldn’t expect that the passengers are seated below the cargo. For obvious safety reasons especially on trips that do not take several days to reach its destination. Oh, this is a big tragedy.

I don't know what it is with some of you that just accuse others of corruption. I am very sure you have swallowed the 'fight against corruption' mantra hook, line and sinker while the idiots blowing such trumpet are the worst purveyors and enablers of the so-called corruption they claim to fight. Once someone says something you are probably too dull to understand or interpret you reduce it to corruption and name-calling. What is wrong with you? Are you mad? How do you just sit and decide that a person is wicked and selfish? Do you even have the faintest idea of the feeling that comes with a close shave or a near miss?

The op would have been on that ship but for inexplicable some twist of fate and now, he has every reason to be thankful that this calamity did nit befall him. That does not in any way mean that he rejoices over the sad fate that has befallen others.
