Your point on big brother Africa and South Africa/ US examples have no logic in this context. Firstly, the rice exporters know most of the rice exported to Benin is for Nigeria. Secondly, the importers are investors, importers and business men in Nigeria.
Thirdly, a bag of rice in Lagos now cost between 18K and 19K per 50KG bag while Derica tin poor man buys between 220 and 250 naira now cost between 350 and 400 naira and still increasing. This is the imported rice price and the only rice in traditional local / open market. In South West, South South and South East Nigeria where I spent months on local rice availability research, there is no Lake, Olam or any other locally produced rice in the open market. Coscharis may make rice available in the East but not yet.

There is no GLUT in the rice production sector in Nigeria, no availability in the market. The President, NSA and Customs CG are all from the Nigerian Army, I think the Staff College, War College and NIPSS courses in those days were very defective about management.

I also noticed the inclusion of Niger border closure is just a camouflage. I don't want to dwell on that today.

South Africa is too developed to be affected by economic policies of the front line States. The US concerns herself so much about the welfare and wellbeing of her citizens. US cannot ban importation of rice to protect Arkansas farmers or rice mills in the US when there is a shortage.

No one mentioned South Africa here and the South African economy is not exactly as sophisticated as you paint it. A huge junk of the economy still relies on sales of primary goods(Agriculture and mineral resources) to the international market

Do you know what is called dumping in economics.

For instance When I was a child most of the Matches being used in my neighbourhood was manufactured in Ibadan, today the matches being use are all gotten from Malaysia and it's all as a result of dumping.

What rice manufacturers in Tailand have managed to do for years is called dumping.

They make it impossible for local manufacturers in Nigeria to compete effectively in the market because their government offer unbeatable subsidies which enables them sell their products at an unbelievable low price.

And in return, Nigeria lose huge revenue and job opportunities that should have been created in the Agricultural sector.

Rice is not air, Nigerians can live without it, let us cut it off until we can produce enough to bring the price down.

It will only encourage demand for substitutes like yam and cassava.

When you have a corrupt mindset, this is how you think
forget about corrupt mindset.. go to the north and see how they are importing rice using bikes. I went to buy rice yday and the aboki told me that it's expensive because it's a bit hard to now transport it across the border that means they have to increase d bribe they give customs officers hence making the rice expensive..all those closing of borders is meant for the westerners but not for the north

Things will only be expensive as it is now only for a short time. By the time people see the only option we have is to consume our locally produced goods, it will encourage more to go into the production. This in the end will bring competition among the producers... naturally, the prices of these items will crash.

Look beyond now, pls
that's how it started that from 8k it jumped to these amount because we believe that local production will reduce price.but is clear that nothing will make the price reduce as far as we are concerned

i already said you are stupidly and mistakenly made. Again ( A quarter of a year is enough in economics to correct abnormalities). well, west africa gas pipeline is an agreement between Nigeria and Ghana. Nigeria must supply ahead before cash is made. even in the agreement., Ghana owns about 16 percent stake of the project and now Ghana has settle up the usual debt and develop her own gas company.

she will be exporting gas to ivory coast soon.

The importers in your countries pays billions of dollars annually to ur respective government on rice duties. then smuggle the rice freely to Nigeria to sell and still make money without paying tax. What nonsense.

Buhari please cut of Benin, ghana,Togo, niger lights their debts is too much. Nigeria cannot be giving light freely when we citizens re paying high fees to enjoy power.

No more economic Big Brother again period

The government should to encouraged to even tighten the importation noose more.

Even if it will be more expensive in short term, Nigerians will gain more in the long run.

When Nigerians wear foreign clothes, drink foreign wines, eat imported food, it baffles me when they complain about unemployment.

For every grain of imported rice Nigerians actually provide employment for input sellers, agric engineers, extension works, marketers, supply chain experts, warehouse owners, transportation companies of the exporting countries.

China closed their border for more than 10 years and within that period they learn to produce whatever they needed, it was tough for them but then they are reaping the fruits of their sacrifices today.

To discourage smuggling we are going to close our borders. This country is a joke that write itself.

So you are leaving no option but smuggling in an anti-smuggling effort. The importation of rice from another country is not smuggling. You can label and outlaw it, if you want to. But it is not. Food is not and will never be contraband. Wicked people.

Good !

How can Benin Republic with a population of 16millon become the sixth largest importer of rice in the world and the largest importer of rice in Africa.

Sometimes I doubt anything like Pan-africanism ever existed.

Yet, the president of Benin wants Nigeria to open its borders for further exploitation.

We are also feeling the pinch here ... Turkey now N1,700.

The trials and tribulations we have to go through as a country in order to become great is unbelievable and overwhelming.

I keep telling people not to blame only buhari but to blame themselves(the citiZen) and past leaders.

As a nation we’ve really been unwise these past 59 years...

Wait till they squarely face power

bro, this is not theory. It's practical. Locally produced rice for now will be very expensive because we don't have enough to go round and Nigeria being a country filled with corrupt and opportunistic people will experience a hike in the price of the available little.

Now imagine the Federal Government leaving the borders closed for another 3years,...lemme remind you that any business that brings in good money in Nigeria will be 'flooded' till the business crashes or becomes less profitable. What I am trying to say here is that, with the kind of money farmers will make during this period of border closure will encourage many more people go into farming...and before you know it, there will be more than enough to go round...and before you know it, farmers will be struggling to get people to buy their own...

Bro, this is beyond corrupt Nigerians. It's a natural thing. The price will crash.

It will also mean more products available plus with increased subsidy on the product we can easily export to other countries at very cheap rate, cheaper than their own country sef, exactly all this imported rice are doing to us

The people of Niger Republic do not eat parboil rice (they eat white rice), but importers based in Benin and Nigeria import parboiled rice to Benin Republic in very large quantities and then re-export same to Niger, Chad and Cameroon (all Nigeria’s next door neighbours) for smuggling into Nigeria where parboiled rice is eaten.

This is the whole shenanigan in a nutshell. In addition to the steps being taken by the Federal Government, may the good Lord drive decent sense into those involved in this backdoor importation practice. That way, they will realize the enormity of the damage they're criminally inflicting on the economy of Nigeria.

You do not grow an industry like that.

People cannot farm on empty bellies.

What you do is give a window that would allow importation between a particular time, while also sounding the need for local cultivation. This would allow people store the many they need now to consume while they wait for the ones they planted to grow.

Are the rice facilities we have now enough to feed the population? What about cost? The imported one is cheaper than homegrown. So these are things you need to consider. It is a nice move, but it needs a softer approach.
if the border is still open our people will not farm... Can you allow your kid to study agriculture on school, because that is where our problem as a nation comes from
