From my point of view, I think the FG's decision is commendable. The Nigerian economy has been on a life support because of the economic sabotage as identified. We cannot continue to encourage this evil simply because, we are benefiting from buying cheap products smuggled to the country even to our own economic detriments.
I only hope that it will not be the usual policy to make a perilous jump once it directly affects the interests of an influential man.
We must learn to do things differently, opening borders again means that the value chain of corruption will continue to strive ...
Just imagine this, Niger with its small population being 6th in world's largest importers of rice. Does that not tell you anything?

They import the rice massively then smuggle them all into Nigeria, where does that happen

The Government knws Nigerian has not gotten to a level of self sufficiency, why close the boarder.?
They would hv used it to generate money for the country by placing import charges on goods brought in frm there.
Out right closure has led to inflation and it's all on the common man.
What does this government actually want us to do.everyday Nigeria is sinking deeper into mess and we only see there achievements on the media.no good road,no transparency in govt.nothing is working at all.

You cannot compare imported juice and furniture to rice.
ornicus:

It may also never meet demand without radical action.

Obj did the same with furniture and imported juice, and the economy is better off for this. Of course rice is a staple food, so one may argue that this is different.

The real problem may be quality. The last bag I bought was full of stones and some other stuff

We are also feeling the pinch here ... Turkey now N1,700.

The trials and tribulations we have to go through as a country in order to become great is unbelievable and overwhelming.

I keep telling people not to blame only buhari but to blame themselves(the citiZen) and past leaders.

As a nation we’ve really been unwise these past 59 years...

Wait till they squarely face power

To buttress your point
I went to Onitsha market and they said #1700 for a kilo of Turkey. I went to life chicken stand and l bought one #1,700. In fact, the second time l went there, l bought two layers for #3000.

Anybody that patronise Onitsha market can testify. The rate at which people are buying life chicken is booming and by so doing, our agricultural sector (poultry) is growing. More will get jobs in that sector and revenue to government.

There are villages in Anambra state (Anaku, Omoh, ifite Oguari, Omasi, Adani). These communities grow local rice and the COST of a bag is #6,000. In fact coscharis motor just installed rice factory at Anaku and l saw the news on nairaland some days back.

Just imagine if we have more investors in rice sector, and good railway system, many people will be employed (mechanised) and their won't be need to stay in city. With good rail, they can transport at low cost yo any part of Nigeria

Dangote said sometimes that you can never havea porous border like we have in Nigeria and you expect our economy to survive. He knows what he is saying.

Benin republic is number 6 on the chart or countries that import rice in the world. A population of 11.6million

bro, this is not theory. It's practical. Locally produced rice for now will be very expensive because we don't have enough to go round and Nigeria being a country filled with corrupt and opportunistic people will experience a hike in the price of the available little.

Now imagine the Federal Government leaving the borders closed for another 3years,...lemme remind you that any business that brings in good money in Nigeria will be 'flooded' till the business crashes or becomes less profitable. What I am trying to say here is that, with the kind of money farmers will make during this period of border closure will encourage many more people go into farming...and before you know it, there will be more than enough to go round...and before you know it, farmers will be struggling to get people to buy their own...

Bro, this is beyond corrupt Nigerians. It's a natural thing. The price will crash.
Nice one bro,u spoke my mind. Nigerians will only feel the impact for a year or less after which the rice will be sold like garri in our local market cos a villager who does not av money to polish his rice will process it locally and carry it to the nearest market. In 2009 when I was serving in patigi local govt area of Kwara State i eat local rice for 12month at a very low price.infact ppl from that area eat rice as swallow and semi liquid food cos they av it in excess

Do you know how much Nigeria and Nigerians businesses are losing on daily basis in that effect....well it's left for them to decide what is my own there

My question is how does your point abt what we pay for daming a flowing river, come into play here

We give them electricity so that they won't dam it in their oil country before it reaches Nigeria, if they do, the mighty rivers that generate thousands of megawatts will scarcely have enough current to drown a playing child

I'm a complete southerner with roots in the 3 geopolitical zones, a PDP supporter and a strong buhari critic (I wrote his name in small letters on purpose). However, this is the best thing buhari has ever done in his life that is good and if I don't admit it out of hatred, I become a hypocrite...

The govt has been very vocal about supporting agriculture but who wants to do dirty farm work when there's KPMG and Shell oil?

-If govt increase tariff, the rice smugglers won't pay,
-If the govt destroys or seizes the foreign rice in the market, it's the local market women who will be affected cus they have paid for the goods.
-As long as there's foreign rice in the market, people (me included) will keep paying 5k extra to buy imported rice so even if we wait for 15yrs, our local rice market won't grow.
-I wish buhari will close this border till 2023 and I might consider voting Tinubu (Lol, no jokes though)
- Yes local rice will shoot up from maybe 12k to 18 or even 20k cus we Nigerians are very greedy by nature but we can be rest assured that someone in Nigeria is paying tax from that money and as long as the border is closed, the person will patronize another Nigerian who will patronize another Nigerian who will finally patronize me.
- The best part is that due to our greedy nature, many Nigerians will rush into rice production and crash the market within the next 2 - 5yrs and bag of rice will be sold for 5-8k.
- I am certain this will happen cus we are very stingy people that don't send face, even if it's our bff that's selling rice at 16k, if we see another person selling for 8 - 10k, we are ready to end that friendship or buy by proxy from the competition till our bff won't have a choice than to bring down the price to compete grin
-Meanwhile, at least 50k to 1m Nigerians are guaranteed jobs not just in the agric industry, it's a ripple effect.

Take the current benefit the closure of shoprite is having on our local supermarkets, it's the same thing.

Good move by the FG, but most importantly use this opportunity to clean up our system and stimulate local production through deliberate government policies otherwise this might just be an avenue for customs & immigration officers to make a killing through kickbacks.

The west African power pull project was suggested by Ghana so that countries who have excess power can transmit their excesses to other countries who dont have enough power.

Most of you don't understand things.

The FG didn't ban importation of rice, it only placed it among goods that importers won't be given subsidized dollars to import. So they must source for their dollars in the open market.

The FG increased the tariffs and duties on imported rice through our ports, this was to discourage imports and encourage local production by farmers thereby creating wealth and jobs for those into rice production.

Importers seeing that importing through neighbouring countries and smuggling into Nigeria was cheaper decided to go for that option.

Who loses or gains?
Loss

Loss of tariffs and duties to our neighbours,
Low price of imported rice discourages local farmers from expanding production,
Unemployment.

Gains

Asian rice farmers smile to the bank, they make more money and pay taxes to their home governments, more employment too,
Our neighbours make money as well because of the tariffs and duties Nigerian importers pay,

Developed countries like Switzerland and even Japan still have some form of restrictions on imports of agricultural produce because they want to boost production and help their farmers, why can't Nigeria do same?

Any serious rice importer should import through our ports, pay normal tariffs and duties and sell. I personally would wish that foreign rice to go as high as 50k, if you can't afford it then go for local, if you don't like it, other sources of carbohydrate are available and if you are not satisfied, DRINK WATER.

Very Good Nigeria is not doing Big Brother again. You neighboring countries have been milking us since.

The importers in your countries pays billions of dollars annually to ur respective government on rice duties. then smuggle the rice freely to Nigeria to sell and still make money without paying tax. What nonsense.

Buhari please cut of Benin, ghana,Togo, niger lights their debts is too much. Nigeria cannot be giving light freely when we citizens re paying high fees to enjoy power.

No more economic Big Brother again period

If you cut off those countries light, they will be forced to build a hydro dam along the river Niger which is Nigerians source of hydro power.
..
That's why Nigeria is selling em light in a subsidized price..

you say there isn't enough locally produce rice to go around that's why it's expensive, right. Now since there isn't enough to go around why didn't the government wait for there to be enough to go around before they close the border.

Think about it, there isn't enough local rice to go around and it's expensive, now that the border is close what do you think will happen to the little local rice that is around? The price will triple and who will bear the burden?

There are business that brings in good money that will never be flooded because the capital to start it is something else.

The federal government is making a very big mistake with this move. I hope you know the price of chicken have gone up now?

What goes up must come down as long as the borders remain closed. Bag of rice that costs 3-5k to produce per bag will become he next oil well

Good !

How can Benin Republic with a population of 16millon become the sixth largest importer of rice in the world and the largest importer of rice in Africa.

Sometimes I doubt anything like Pan-africanism ever existed.

Yet, the president of Benin wants Nigeria to open its borders for further exploitation.

https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/the-largest-rice-importers-in-the-world.html
you know the answer already.. even though Nigeria consumes more rice than Benin rep, but where those rice comes from is Benin due to Nigeria banning rice imports on rice.. so this is why Benin is the 6th largest importer of rice..

There is a similar scenario which happened in 2010.. Cote d'ivoire is the world largest importer of cocoa but when their war or civil violence came up in 2010, Ghana became the largest producer of cocoa. It is not that Ghana planted or harvested or produced more cocoa but ivorians smuggled their cocoa out into Ghana just to import it..

i never wanted to comment on this topic, but you pen down something worth replying. you show knowledge of the subject but a flaw understanding.

benefiting of protectionist theory is only temporal, if those nation decide to fight back, it will not be of interest to Nigeria. or you are not aware this countries too can fight back? Nigeria export to those countries too.

The benefit simply ends once benin and Niger republic begin to retaliate by erecting their own protectionis, in the long term, trade protectionism weakens the industry. Without competition, companies within the industry have no need to innovate. in the long run, nigeria domestic product will decline in quality. It will be lower quality and still be expensive than what foreign competitors will have produce.
