I think your calculation is wrong. He would make 97,500 for imvesting 3M for 91 days at 13% and 390,000 for the whole year.

Okay, let me try...In the world of finance, rates are stated per annum mostly. So, first know that whatever rate you are told for t-bills is per annum. Now, the reason for higher rate with longer tenor (e.g. 13% for 364 but 10% for 90days) is because longer tenors carry more financial risks (risk of currency devaluation, inflation, basic economic stuff that drive purchasing power) and so the investor gets compensated for that risk he/she is taking on.

Now, let me use some numbers to explain so that, hopefully, it is more intuitive...
Following your thought that 10% should not be divided by 4, it means the bank pays you N300K on N3Million for investing for 90 days
While they pay someone else that invests that same N3 million for a whole year at 13% N390K
Now, you will go back and get N300K 3 more times that year making your total interest N1.2 million (4*N300K)
So, you make N1.2 million while the other person makes N390K. Why will anybody invest for a year then and not for 90 days or even daily and get maybe 6% per day?

I hope you understand now, that is sort of the best way I know to explain it.

Thanks this is a detailed explanation, seriously you will make a good teacher.

What?
This is foolish betting. I know people who earns 2M per month and do not stake more than 5k in bets.
Get rich quick syndrome.

So you are saying on an investment of 3m you can make 1.2 million per year if you go for the 90 days option at 10%?

That's a 40 percent return per annum.

This can't possibly be true

She was only trying to give an analogy to explain why 91days TB at 10% is divided by 4

You are reading out of context, I was explaining something to him that it is impossible to make that. There was an ongoing discussion between us already. So, you are correct, it is impossible and that is what I was explaining to him..I wish it was possible..lol

10.5% for 1yr would be for 105k.

90days is like 3mths which 1yr divide by 4

105k/4 should get you an upfront payment of no more than 26k

Gurus in the house, please i need your input in this :
I have Tbill that will mature 14th February 2019,which I will re invest. I intend to do 3.3M for 364days for at least 14%., but due to some unexpected expenditures, I will have only 2.9M to invest.
My Questions is :
Should I write 3.3M in the Tbill primary market form(even though I have 2.9M in the account)
Knowing fully well that the 2.9M covers the discount value?
I know this is not applicable to Firstbank. I am asking as regards stanbic ibtc since Stanbic usually debit discount value in Tbill.
NB
Face value = 3.3M
Discount value = 2.838M
Assuming rate = 14%
Tenor =364 days
Thanks

Hello guys,
Can someone confirm if this is possible with stanbic ibtc

There is always a certificate issued with the details of investment, rate and maturity date. If not issued instantly, you can always go to pick it up.

I just came out from there and these were the rates and tenors i was given:

59 days - 11.5%

150 says - 12.4%

339 days - 13%.

I went for the 339 days as i cannot wait for Primary market of October 2. Now waiting for alert.
