I don't believe you're in love with the lady either ... listen to yourself; " why didnt they tell me this before instead..." It simply means you would have walked even in the face of a simple challenge that may have been resolved with dialogue, or do you imagine marriage to be a bed of roses all through and through?! I doubt if you'll be a better husband sir!!

If they had told him before, he wouldn't have been with the lady long enough to catch feelings.

This is why full disclosure is advised when you go into any relationship. Tell the person what's up, so, they don't catch feelings later, only for you to drop a bomb.

Forget this talk about loving someone, love cannot survive in a toxic environment, this is real life, not Romance novel. If the mother has something against his ethnicity, that's a red flag. Except they plan to cut her off permanently, he shouldn't endanger his peace of mind on the altar of any yeye love.

You dated her for six months and now you want to marry her. The mother is right, you are bad, unserious and with no good plan. It is only white men that marry after few weeks of dating and divorce after few weeks of marriage because they don't even take time to know each other.

However, I have meet few exceptionally cool people that you can marry even the day you meet them and you will still not have problems. These people are one in a billion, so there are just seven of them on earth. Did you meet one of them that you want to marry within a short time? If not, go and take your time to really know whom you want to spend the rest of your life with.
*sighs*
People like you bore me like hell!
How do you know OP is not the 'one in a billion'
You don't know the nigga or his readiness for marriage but u typed all that nonsense for what exactly? Are u to decide how many months a couple should date or court? If you have no piece of advice, why not keep quiet?

I have been dating her for about 6 months now, last month on her birthday I proposed to her and she said yes. Ever since then the mum have been angry, she invited me to come over to have discussions with me. She is EDO and I am IGBO, the mum said she doesn't want her daughter to marry IGBO because of what an Igbo lady did to her brother.
I was shocked and dumbfounded, while didn't they tell me all this while instead of wasting my time.

Same thing happened in our compound, my elder bro brought back this girl to marry in Mbaise Imo state, my auntie was happy, but when she spoke to the girl and she was like, "Auntie doo, I no dey hear Ib,,,,, she couldn't complete the sentence and my auntie took the coke I brought for her and broke on the poor girl's head. See wahala that day grin

The poor Edo girl ran and my aunt chased her with a cane, flogging her all the way to the bus stop, my elder bro was helpless as it was my auntie who trained him in university.

The poor Edo girl was rejected because one wicked Edo woman who lived in my uncles house in Benin was using witchcraft to suck my auntie business.

Just imagine. In 21st century. A marriage hindered over unverifiable frivolous claims of witchcraft.

Africa is indeed the dark continent.

This is why people should not go proposing and getting engaged, splashing photos on social media without the consent of their parents.

No biggie.

Goan marry Igbo geh na.After all Igbo Amaka.
I won't even subscribe to a lady who is not Igbo to marry an Igbo man.

Bro I faced similar challenges long ago
I am from Edo state and my wife is from Imo state. My mother in law said the marriage will not hold because Bini people are witches and very wicked... Then I asked her... do you mean to say that every ibo person is a saint?... she could not answer me... every member of your tribe is not a saint, in the same vain every non tribal person is not evil. Let no body judge you by your tribe, or the colour of your skin...rather let them judge you by the content of your character. Today I happily married to the same lady and she is a sister, mother, friend and wife in one package. The choice is entirely yours to make. Hope this will help you.

At times I don't blame these parents taking this decision. Some years ago I had a relationship with an igbo girl from Eziama in mbakala in abia state. My pastor then was not happy with the relationship and told me to immediately go and see her people
All attempts to see her people was frustrated by this lady until she became pregnant. One day before I returned from a journey she took her time and packed everything I had in my house and went away with them, by then she was 6 months pregnant
Not to be seen as an irresponsible young man I went to their village, immediately she saw me she pleaded with me not to tell her people that she stole all my properties.
Long story short, I was ask how she managed to acquire all these properties, I had to lie cover for her
I was immediately told to drop money for anti natal which I did. But I was entertained anyway.
Time for delivery she could not
At the 11th month of the pregnancy she was rushed down to where I'm, more than 200 kilometres away. That night I bought a drink and prayed for her and immediately water start coming out of her body and I rushed her to the hospital, she gave birth that day and the next day I discharged her to the empty house with a foam and few things I newly acquired.
I now left to go and collect money in the bank, my people before I came back they were nowhere to be found, left with some other things I newly bought.
Moreover, I'm also aware of about 5 other abia girls, one sold her baby the others were not found by their husband up till today.
Now I have gotten other 4 children and I have not seen that abia scoundrel up till today. And you expect me not to act when my child want to marry from that area you lie

I still do not believe parent still dictate who their children should get married to in this 21st century,bt anyways her mom told her not to marry someone because of an utterance with an igbo person, like seriously?
At this point i really do not know what to say bt you should hear her decision out first.
I can't imagine my mom telling me me i can't marry my bf because people from his race colonised Nigeria.

Well done...civilized, mordern day, 21st century woman....you don’t believe parents still have personal opinion in their child’s marriage.....it’s everywhere both places with cultural/tribal differences and free thinking countries....
there will always be a reason why parents refuse choice of spouse from their children..it can never go away, it has nothing to do with civilization...it could be money, class, educational status, pst experience.....Incase u don’t know, the recent xenophobic attack has put south Africans on the list humans some parents will never allow their children marry.

The main question is why are we still barbaric towards our fellow man in this 21st century that makes people discriminate...it isn’t always about tribe or cultural differences. People don’t just wake up and say they don’t want mbaise tribe or the Fulani and so on.... it’s what the humans from these tribe, race, nation have done or even still doing that makes people discriminate....

You saw the Red flags on time but unfortunately, you still dived into it. Experience is the best teacher and you got your own first class experience. Intertribal marriages entails a lot and if you are not ready to accommodate all that, don't jump into it.

Every tribe have their culture and tradition. Marriage is a lifetime journey and no one should be carried away by just physical attributes, love and likeness. There's more to it. Intertribal marriages isn't for everyone.

But like safarigirl said, full disclosure from the onset is the Ultimate to avoid wasting anyone's time.

Let the OP concentrate within his territory and he will find an Igbo girl to marry from and the girl doing the same and everyone will be fine.

So, the fiancee no know say her mama no like Igbo people when she dey follow you waka?

It is ignorance that is making her mother talk like that, tomorrow, another man will refuse to marry her daughter because his own mother had a bad experience with Edo people.

Old age does not always mean wisdom, it could also mean years of experience in ignorance

babe you finish am wella.
tribalism is real in Nigeria and the worst thing It is been spread by the so called folks with green hairs. .....

I told a friend this morning. ...I have had close 6 ibo ladies turned me down because of my tribe.....
and the worst thing is as the ladies begin to get older some their late 30s they'll begin to understand that your life partner can come from any tribe and such it may not be that easy to find a good man as it was when they were much younger

You must have really been around the block with women.

Anyway, don't allow your experiences and bias ruin your children's lives. You could be chasing a good thing from them inadvertently, and when you're gone, they will be forced to suffer the consequences of your own bias.

Character is not dependent on tribe or state of origin solely.

what makes people who they're is because of their family upbringing and values and not their tribes.....

I told my mom this some years ago with scriptures from the Bible and since then... she changed the tune she just pray for good wives for her children irrespective of the tribe and God make her children good husbands too

yeah exactly..

family upbringing, environment and values makes up character the most....
man at birth was a clean slate...tabular raza. ..

an Edo guy that was born and brought up in enugu will definitely act and live different than one brought up in Benin....

likewise a child brought up in a strict moral set up may likely grow up and act differently from one brought up under weak parenting and others.....

sometimes we negate the essentials all because of ignorance
