What's the point of all these pointless arguments on nairaland especially all these husband wife etc etc community marriage back and forths? There's one currently ongoing where someone who regularly posts what can be considered pornographic photos, is arguing the man knows better when it comes to advice. If it were a woman or a wife posting photos of men's private parts at random intervals, would he say the same thing about her reasoning process?

In my opinion, any wealth or property acquired by Nigerians should be donated to the state or a religious organization after the owner has had their fill of it.

There is no point inheriting unnecessary trouble in the name of property, even while the owner is actively owning the property na wahala every time, what Nigerians should try to do is encourage the government to provide for it's citizens so they don't need to fight over property and material things.

No offence to the people debating, it's just that Nigerians do not listen to beneficial advice, they only want advice that causes friction and scattering.

For the wives, no matter any property involved, do not plan for property that wasn't there when you got married, or which doesn't involve you. As long as you did not contribute over 90% to the purchase, ignore it.

Just my thoughts, I could be wrong.

I'm just not as property oriented as others, not being a typical Nigerian. I think property ownership should be one, not all, of the things that make for a sense of accomplishment and I am annoyed when people (Nigerians) start acting up as usual over it. It's good to be fulfilled (the Nigerian dream is to own property) but not at the expense of your well being and the well being of others around you.

Also why I cautioned someone the other day who went bananas over a random topic about walking away during stress, he interpreted that to mean destroy everything in sight rather than let a woman have it. What the heck?
Pointless and Toothless.

A woman of virtue who can find, She considers a piece of land and buys it, her husband is well known....

Biblically yes. Proverbs 31 says it all. However situations vary and it's more of a general question that @Op raised.

What happens when a man has more than one wife? There are many cases of women who surrendered their all only to be booted out later since all that was acquired together got registered only in the man's name.

A property registered as being owned by Mr and Mrs Mola Lagbaja belongs to Mr Mola Lagbaja and any woman he presents as his wife! For clarity it should be stated as "Mr Mola and Mrs Sandra Lagbaja.

Women who are rich enough to own property should of course make sure their kids are cared for, but that doesn't have to be in the form of leaving them property although it's the usual way.
If they don't leave their properties to their kids, what happens to it when they(the women) die?
Re: Is It Right For A Wife To Keep Properties In Her Name? by mamatwiny(f): 9:28pm On Nov 04, 2019
It depends on who you are married to.
If he is wasteful, you better start making investments in your name or children's name.
I will prefer children's name incase he finds out in future.

How old would the kids be when that happens?

If they are grown, they shouldn't need the property unless they're not financially ok.

Most property and wealth owned by Nigerians rarely gets direct generational transfer, something or the other always comes up that makes the property too hot to handle. Most, not all.

That’s no marriage. Marriage is when two become one in all.
As a Christian, marriage is symbolic for God’s perfect plan towards humanity. The reconciliation of the bride and groom, to glorify his name. This is demonstrated by the love of Christ who redeemed mankind to glorify him. The template is very clear, Christ is the groom and this church is the bride which he loves and would present without blemish to God.
In a Christian marriage, the wife ought to submit to the husband in all things and the husband should love the wife as Christ loves the church.
There is no place for competition, strive and individuality in marriage. When you begin to see yourselves as one, the Holy Spirit establishes divine synergy in your marriage to even do more.
Pray before you go into marriage.
SHUT THE F.UCK UP. submission and shit. Y'all refuse to evolve

Well... It depends on the agreement between us. If he buys a property first and choose to put his name only, when I buy mine, it will definitely have my name ONLY.
But if I'm included as a co-owner, of course we can co-own mine too.

In a situation where I get a property before him, i will add his name to all papers and if he can't do the same when he buys his, then I might not wait for the next hour to remove his name from documents of my property. Since we both wants to be petty.

But really, regardless of whose money is/was used in buying a property, once we are married all funds/properties belongs to US.

And i won't understand why most ladies(both married and single) do lie to their spouse to collect money. I mean if your spouse go bankruptcy you will suffer the loss together and if there is boom you will enjoy it together. So why do you have to lie?

A lot of couples don’t have that spirit of oneness and unity when they get married. They still see themselves as separate individuals.

But it isn't always about finance. You could leave something to be remembered for, or something that is special to them, like a house. Even so, you're saying you're leaving no properties for your kids.

For the Nigerian millenial generation which is typified by nairaland views and opinions, society has to recognize their attitude to marriage is different.

I work where landed property documents is been secured. In my own opinion if both parties own the property, names should be clearly stated on the survey plan and land agreement.
Also during the purchase of c of o form both parties should clearly write their names. If husband owns a property in his name and he put and Mrs without clarifying all the names his spouse in his documents anybody can be a Mrs so u don't automatically own the property even if u have ten children for him.
Also it is based on the understanding of the spouse. Ko si omo ale baba e ni o yoju, men can do a mistake by impregnating a side chick unknowgly at the end all ur hard earn labor would be shared, if u feel it isnt a bad idea for him to share it them u can do it jointly.

Still asking? Only a slowpoke will acquire properties in her mans name in this perilous times. Even the men are not advising such a risky venture cos they know.

Why would I When I have children? After Me and hubby live life finish, who's next? Is it not our children? And one aborkorku is already saying 'my own his own' shior! Make your eye no clear soon.

It is very very ok√√√√.

I saw a tweet (on twitter) from a certain Ronald Nzimora and later supported by his friend, Hon. Akin Alabi as regards the above subject (as attached).

Thus, I'm compelled to ask if it's actually right for a WIFE to own properties in HER name.

1. What if the wife is richer and kept everything in her name. Don't you feel the husband will feel 'detached' and maybe unhappy?

2. What if the husband is richer and kept all the properties in his name. Don't you feel the wife will feel 'detached' and maybe unhappy?

PS. My wife and I work, and are financially independent of each other. She's been supportive
though and we buy properties in our names, e.g. Mr Kenneth Cole and Mrs Grace Cole. This is rational and not abnormal.

Reasons best known to her, but I don't think all is well in that marriage

Yes and No. it depends on the circumstances and the reason she’s doing it. Smtmes it’s not about not trusting u bt protecting and securing herself and kids against in-laws invasions in future. I think

In this part of the world in-laws encroach alot into their siblings property smtmes for good and other times for bad depending on the type of wife or in-laws in question.

Another perspective

As fair & gender-equal as this concept seems, guess which 'oppressed' gender is still going to be against it.

Why create mutual suspicion in marriages?

Everyone wants to turn the mess in his life to a general rule of thumb.

I don't think there is any sensible man out there who will be struggling for his wife to buy property in his name.

If there is, then such a man has no shame, a complete idiot.

What ever a woman want to do with her property is her choice to make, person like me won't even want to know if u have a property or not....

Imagine otedola or Dangote asking their wife to buy property on their name, na poverty they cause all this rubbish if not this is not even a topic of discussion
